deja vu (the doctor, cavan, sympathy)
Dean drove out of the development where the house was and out onto the main stretch of... wherever this town was. He was looking for major landmarks, and anything familiar at all--including people he knew, just walking around.

Still, they didn't get far into the drive before Dean's stomach was gurgling. He didn't really want to put off the search, but food? With him? It couldn't wait.

Dean pulled into the lot of the Friendly's as it came up on his right. At least that was something sort of familiar. He parked the car, and with a sigh, turned to explain all of what was going to happen in there to Sympathy.

"Alright. I'm really hungry, and that's... gonna get in the way of trying to do what we wanna do. So we're gonna go in there and get some food and then go back to looking around."

He looked at her, eyes searching hers. This was going to be a lot for her. "It might be loud in there, but it's just a place that serves food, and we'll go as quick as we can."

Dean gave her a quick nod, got out of the car, closed the driver's side door, and waited for her right at the door of the restaurant. Part of him wanted to walk around the back and see if there was a big blue box there.

Sympathy slid out of the car, hearing Dean's words but not looking at him. Her gaze was on the place that he had brought her. She knew of taverns and other such establishments that served food. This one, though, was very different. It looked a little like the houses that they'd started out in. And it said Friendly's across the front of it.

"I know of taverns, Dean." She chided a little. Though she didn't think she would have called this a tavern. Or a pub. Or an inn, for that matter.

She followed him inside and discovered that the interior was just as strange - if not stranger - than the outside. It was very clean. Very bright. Very not anything she had experienced before. And there were children. Not poor little urchins begging for food or trying to work for coin. Happy ones. Clean ones. They were everywhere.

Sympathy was becoming visually overstimulated fairly quickly.

Cavan wasn't exactly sure what to make of the place. He'd followed the Doctor because he didn't know anybody else around. It seemed like the best choice. He didn't want to be in that house anymore, and the man seemed willing to explore with him. When food had been mentioned, The Doctor ducked aside quickly and Cavan found himself staring at a building that was all too familiar.

On the inside, it looked exactly like the place he'd met Dean. Except for the mural. The mural was really fucked up. In a special kind of fucked up way.

So while it was all much like what he'd seen in York, it was very surreal to him. This one was also a lot busier. Kids. Families. People smiling. Cavan felt a little out of place with his all black attire and somewhat grim expression.

Not made any better by the contrast of the ice cream concoction on the table in front of him. It was adorable, and he'd been encouraged to get it by The Doctor, who seemed to enjoy the simple things in life to an extent that Cavan had not encountered before. He'd ordered it to shut the guy up, but when it came out, he'd not been able to stop staring at it for more than two seconds.

It was staring right back at him.

The whole looked like a monster. Eyes, ears, a nose. He supposed he should have expected as much, given what it was called. But his mind had gone big, not shaped to look like a thing.

"I hope you're happy." He said. It might have been aimed at the doctor, it might have been aimed at the monster.

In one of his two second breaks from the gaze of his ice cream, Cavan looked up and noticed a man who looked very familiar. Dean. More familiarity. So very wrong. The woman he was with looked as dazed as he felt.

The Doctor liked anywhere cheerful.

As long as it was the proper kind of cheerful.

Friendly's was familiar, because they had those back where they'd just come from. York. The American east coast. He had no idea where they were just now. It hadn't shown up on the TARDIS's normal charts, and that was troubling.

But the Doctor didn't believe that whatever'd done this would do something like deny them food. No. That hardly seemed the point.

He'd ordered himself a rootbeer float that two small toddlers could possibly drown in, and grinned as Cavan said he hoped he was happy.

"Oh, as I can be," the Doctor said. "Ice cream's a marvelous invention. Really added something to the dessert world."

He sucked loudly on his straw. Delicious!

But Cavan's face was troubled, so he turned his head to see what was the problem. Ah! Good!

"Oh, excellent!" he said, brightly. "Please do come and join."

He waved a lanky arm toward the booth and moved closer to the partition that separated this side of the restaurant from the side with all the kids.

Some had balloons.

Dean almost immediately felt badly for bringing her in here. It was full, and he knew that was a lot for someone who wasn't exactly from 'now.'

"It's okay. We'll get something to eat and we'll go."

He was mid-grab of a waitress's arm to try to get a to-go order when he locked eyes with Cavan.

"Did you want..."

Dean let the girl's arm go.

"Uh, sorry. No." He gave her a charming smile, then dropped it as soon as she walked away, looking from Cavan to the lanky weird guy he sat with, who was apparently inviting them to sit down.

Dean's eyebrows drew together as he watched the guy slide over.

"I know him," Dean said to Sympathy, pointing to Cavan. He started to walk to the table and slid into the booth next to the weird guy, eying him all the while.

"Why are you so cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs?" he asked the guy, arching an eyebrow. "And what... what the fuck are you eating?"

He pointed to the sundae in front of Cavan.

The pirate eyed the balloons. The children. She also eyed Dean, who had brought her into this fresh hell. Sympathy was many things, but a mothering sort was not one of them. And who let children into taverns anyway?

She watched Dean sit with the new pair, curious as to what was going on there as well. Not just with the thing sitting in front of the younger one. But how they knew each other.

Why they were here.

"Yes." She leaned forward after sitting, trying to get a general feel of what she was seeing. It looked like a face. A small creature. And it was cold. "What is that. A little hobgoblin, of course, that is not the question here. What the fuck is it."

For once, her swear was not in Spanish.

Cavan watched Dean sit, and eyed the strange woman. He corrected himself. She didn't look as dazed as he felt. She looked downright lost. Like not one part of anything made sense to her.

"Dean, meet the guy who owns the box that you touched. You know. The blue one. That says police. His name is The Doctor."

His eyes had wandered back toward the monster in front of him. Untouched. Staring at him.

"To be fair, I haven't eaten any of it yet."

The Doctor sipped his rootbeer float and waved cheerfully to Dean and to the lady. He set the cup down and said "Hello!" very brightly.

He was regarding the girl.

What the fuck is it.

"Ice cream. With some candy pieces. Whipped cream, chocolate sauce..."

He was trying to gauge where she was from by her actions, and by clues about her, how she looked. She was not from now. This was not her time. The clothing, the look on her face...

"Bit different from the kind you might've seen, I imagine. Was just starting be something people published a recipe for?</i>" He arched a brow.

He turned, then, and regarded the boy, who was staring at the side of his face.

"May I help you, Dean Winchester?"

Dean was focused on the menu he'd grabbed from a neighboring table for the explanation of the sundae. Once he'd decided he'd like Cheddar Jack Chicken Supermelt, he put that aside.

He hadn't wanted Sympathy to sit next to this guy, but she didn't know Cavan either, and he was hoping she could keep it together.

... just starting to be something people published a recipe for?

Dean turned his head and STARED at the guy's face.

May I help you, Dean Winchester?

The muscles in his jaw worked and jumped under his skin. One, what the hell?! How did he just... sort of... guess where... when... whatever... she might be from? And how did he know Dean's name?

"Oh, you better," Dean said, with a smirk that bordered on mean. He turned his attention to Cavan for a moment. "Where's the bowtie? Are you SURE?"

The Doctor, huh?

"How do we know you didn't do all of this, if you're the Doctor?"

A waitress came by, and Dean placed his order. He looked at Sympathy. "Are you hungry?"

She had heard of the ice cream, and had even had a sample of it on one of her voyages. It was not a treat for those who didn't have money, and was not something that she'd thought that she would see again, or in such quantities. And it certainly had not looked like that.

She sat back in the seat and looked at Dean.

"You will have to choose for me." She shrugged. "I have no idea what any of it is. I am not picky."

Even with a glance at the thing that Dean had been holding, Sympathy knew that she wouldn't understand any of it. It was a simple enough concept for her to grasp. This was a new time, a new place, and none of it would make sense until she had experienced it.

"The Doctor? A doctor of what? On a ship? Or are you a pirate, too, and this is the name they call you by? I have many names."

She turned her attention to the younger one, then. "And you are?"

Sympathy sat back against the booth to eye the food that had been placed in front of her. She'd never seen anything like it in her life. Some of the smells were fairly familiar, which just confused her more. She'd been expecting pork, and here in front of her was beef.

But Dean didn't seem to be surprised at all by the food, so she figured this was just what she should have.

Carefully, she picked up one of the golden colored sticks. It smelled a little like cooked potatoes. She tried a small bite of it, not afraid of it, but also not wishing to get sick from it.

As soon as it was on her tongue, Sympathy was sold.

The other three at her table were entirely forgotten as she began to devour the fries one by one with great enthusiasm.

"That's a good way to put it." Cavan nodded, agreeing with the Doctor's assessment of the house they'd woken up in.

Feeling a little bit devious, he smiled into his ice cream.

"Yeah, he touched it. Told him not to, just did it anyway." He glanced up at Dean, a bit of a smile perched on his lips. "It'll please you to know that the friend that told us to look on the internet for our answers called him an idiot. Yelled it so loud that I heard it even though the phone wasn't on speaker."

He'd likely get a kick from Dean or something. Or there would be future retribution. Cavan was just happy to have something to direct the Doctor's attention toward for the moment.

The Doctor looked at Cavan when he started to talk about the TARDIS.

He wasn't a fan of how excited the kid was to rat Dean out, even though he wasn't a fan of hunters touching his ship.

He ignored the part about Dean having been called an idiot.

"You're lucky she didn't do anything to you," The Doctor said to Dean. "The TARDIS has her own defenses. And you are, in fact, an idiot. Why would you touch alien anything?"

Dean smiled at Sympathy's reaction to french fries.

And then, rather than glare at or kick Cavan, Dean just looked at him blankly. He didn't say anything. He just looked terribly disappointed and not at all surprised.

The things the Doctor was saying hadn't occurred to him, but he filed them away just the same.

Why would you touch alien anything?

"Because you're a good guy. Or supposed to be. Right? And again, you left your ship in the middle of a town full of supernatural craziness. Cut me some friggin' slack."

Sympathy looked up. She was smiling, and it was all for the Doctor.

"I like this idea of the ship having defenses that are active when nobody is there. It is smart. It is good."

There were no more fries. She really wanted more of them. She almost asked Dean to tell the wench to bring more, then realized that she'd yet to try the mysterious not-ham-hamburger. She really should try that before giving up on it.

It took the pirate a moment to decide how to eat it, then she just picked it up in her hands and bit into it.

The flavors that rushed into her mouth were more beautiful than anything she'd experienced. Better, even, than the fries. Sympathy had to put down the strange food and brace herself against the booth while she chewed.

She could have kissed Dean.

Would have, right there in the middle of everything, if he'd not earlier talked about how loyal he was to his woman. Would have not even cared about that, either, but for some other factors. Like how he had guns, or how her mouth was full.

"Santa Maria, esa es una buena comida de mierda." She sighed it around the bite.

"You didn't know he was a good guy when you touched it." Cavan pointed out. "You didn't know anything about him or it when you touched it."

He wasn't exactly sure why he was being such a dick to Dean right now. Maybe it was just that he really wanted to drive home the point that touching things that you didn't know anything about wasn't smart. Maybe he was just trying to teach through harshness. Calm kindness didn't seem to get through to the man.

Cavan put down his spoon, it clanked in the now-empty ice cream bowl. He wiped his mouth and looked at Dean with seriousness.

"I would think that it being in the middle of York where there's a Hellmouth would have stayed your hand. You're going to get yourself killed if you keep doing things like that."

Now he sounded like his own mom. Cavan shook his head.

"Don't get combative. Despite how severely I just threw you under the bus, and how cockfaced it was of me to do so, I'm not wrong."

It is smart. It is good.

The Doctor beamed. He just knew he was really, really going to like Sympathy.

He chuckled at her reaction to the hamburger, then re-focused on the discussion that was going on.

The dynamic between Cavan and Dean was interesting, and the Doctor found himself wishing he had a closed-circuit tv or something recording outside the TARDIS when he was away. What was all of this animosity about, suddenly? He'd like to get to the bottom of whatever kind of puzzle Cavan was.

The Doctor was not going to berate Dean for what he did. There was no point. It was done, and, more importantly, it was utterly within Dean's character. There was no amount of shouting or terse speaking that was going to change that.

You're going to get yourself killed if you keep doing things like that.

Oh, now that was VERY interesting. The Doctor leaned back in the booth and crossed his arms, watching the pair. He had nothing to contribute just now and was more interested in observation.

Dean hadn't missed Sympathy's reaction to the food. He gave her a grin. "See? Totally worth the screaming kids. Because meat."

Combative? Cockface?

Dean raised his eyebrows at Cavan.

The way he looked at the kid now was much less friendly than it'd been ten or fifteen minutes ago. "You better thank your lucky stars I do stupid things. If I didn't, I'm sure there's at least one time it would've cost you something. Back in York, maybe. Maybe something different. Either way, you better stop giving me shit. I've had it with you."

He sounded like John. And he knew he did. But Dean didn't know what else to say without actually getting combative. This wasn't combative. It was just matter-of-fact.

Dean didn't even call Cavan Cockface, despite really wanting to. He was going to be the adult here.

"So back to the here and now part... What exactly's wrong with the ship? You said something's not working. Sounds like if anyone has a clue what's going on here, it's gonna be you. Any hints based on what's all screwy with it?" Dean corrected himself. "Her?"

Sympathy actually didn't know much about what was inside the human body. She knew there was blood, she knew there was a heart. But very few of even the most educated people knew anything about bodies. Even a lot of doctors had no idea what was really going on inside there.

But she got the gist of the comparisons. Enough that it bothered her that something like the TARDIS would have parts taken from it.

She looked at Dean.

"Angels have never been particularly good guys." She shook her head. "They are the hands of God. They are sent to do his will. They kill men, give orders to slay children, deliver threats, they are soldiers, warriors, all with blood on their hands. They punish, and burn down cities."

Sympathy sighed, "With friends like angels, we hardly need enemies like demons."

"So for just the fuck of it, angels would kidnap a bunch of people and take them to a world where Halloween and Easter shit out a creepy baby?" Cavan shook his head. "If that's what happened, I'm not sure I want to know."

There were still a good number of supernatural kinds of things that Cavan was getting used to. The idea of being manipulated by the heavenly host for shits and giggles didn't sit well.

He looked at the pirate.

"Makes more than a little sense. I've never really bought into the idea of naked babies flying around. Not that I really buy into any of it in the greater scheme of things. Not saying none of it exists, just saying I'm not sure I care."

Cavan looked at the Doctor. "So what's your verdict, aliens, angels?"

[info]justthedoctor_

Angels, the word itself, made the Doctor think of only one thing.

It was a very specific kind of alien, the most ruthless kind, in his opinion. They didn't kill you outright. No. They just stole your potential, the remaining years you had when you weren't looking.

But that, he knew, was not what Dean meant.

"I've got no experience with what you're talking about," he said. "But I don't think it's entirely out of the question. I've read the Bible, and I've seen some of the actual incidents in it take place. But are you entirely sure what you think of as a messenger or warrior of God isn't an alien to begin with?"

Dean ran his tongue over his lower lip. "Oh, believe me, honey, I know."

But are you entirely sure what you think of as a messenger of God isn't an alien to begin with?

"This place should have a bar, if you're gonna ask me that."

Dean thought about Cas. And Anna. And Lucifer. And ever other angel he'd ever me and dealt with, even a little. "Yeah, I'm sure. And no, I'm not. Okay?"

Sympathy was a little uncomfortable with the way the conversation was going. It wasn't the talking bad about angels, she knew - as she had said - that they weren't the pure beings of friendship and light that others tried to paint them as. It was the idea that they were anything aside from angels.

That was the kind of thing that got the wrong kind of attention.

She shot a glare at Cavan. Not care about the Almighty and his Host? Not care about the Devil and Hell? How could one not care? She had met the uneducated before, those who had not been taught the ways of the Lord. But they always believed after they were informed. This boy was saying that he knew and still didn't care.

She shook her head.

When Dean mentioned a bar, Sympathy removed a small flask from the band of her pants, setting it before her friend. What was inside of it might have been considered rum, but it was the strongest, worst made rum in all of the seven seas. She only had it because it had been the last thing in the last port that she'd been to. The bottle was almost empty, as well.

That is, if the bottle had made it with her from Electric City.

Cavan really didn't know what to think about any of this. Part of him was starting to wonder if he was having the most fucked up dream of all time. The chill from the ice cream in his stomach and the knot of worry forming in his shoulders was too real, unfortunately.

"We can speculate until we're blue in the face. The fact of the matter is that not one of us knows what the fuck is going on. Sitting in Friendly's is not going to provide answers."

He looked at Dean and the Doctor, unsure as to why the pirate had that distasteful look on her face.

"I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Dean has people he wants to find. I don't know if the Doctor here does. Or the pirate for that matter. I don't. I knew all of one person who was in Electric City and he's sitting at this table. And I didn't even know he was there, for that matter. Everyone else I knew is still in York from what I can tell."

The Doctor had to agree with Cavan. He nodded.

"This is true. Circling the wagons isn't a bad idea." He didn't mention that he did have people he wanted to find, but couldn't because of the shape of the TARDIS. He wasn't going to be able to find Rose with her working improperly.

A waitress came by and took Dean's plate, and gave Sympathy the sundae the Doctor'd suggested she have. He offered the woman a smile, and she went away.

"Other people may have information we don't. I can look into my three leads, but I'd be better off with as much knowledge as I can get about this place first."

Dean gave Sympathy a tiny smile and took the flask. He didn't sniff it or anything before taking a sip.

Mistake.

He could barely keep the... he knew it had to be some kind of rum... in his mouth. There was harsh liquor, and then there was harsh liquor that a pirate from three centuries ago gave you. He managed to swallow a mouthful of it, and it burned like crazy all the way down. His eyes watered. He slid the flask back to her without a word.

When he was able to speak, Dean addressed what Cavan'd said.

"There are definitely people I want to find. At least two. Hopefully more," he said. Mary and Jo. And Harry, if he could. And Phaedra wouldn't be bad to have right now, either.

"Were you two planning on crashing back with the TARDIS?"
