Status: Complete

Though Kira had made a pact within herself to avoid switching out textbook covers with more tempting reads this year, she found herself back at square one denying the commitment was ever made. And no less than a few weeks in to classes at that! It began as a step and progressed into spiraling downward as if being pulled by gravity on a near vertical slope. She switched out her Potions text but purposely left the book in her dormitory for a several days. However, the further she got in to Wuthering Heights, the greater the temptation. Kira had read the book before, but it had been a while since she last visited the familiar pages. The story always managed to rope her in, and before she realized the weight of what she was doing, Kira switched out the Potions binding for her Transfiguration cover.

She hardly considered herself in the proper state of mind at that point, and so was past the point of acknowledging Professor McGonagall the last instructor she wanted to cross that afternoon. Kira rationalized that McGonagall would likely call on students avoiding her gaze, so she'd simply glance up from her book on occasion or give an occasional nod as if piecing it all together.

"If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the Universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it," she mouthed to herself, skimming the familiar chapter as if traveling at the speed of light.

She managed to get through nearly the entire class period prior to getting sniffed out. Unfortunately for her, one of her classmates decided to volunteer Kira to answer one of the questions he himself couldn't master, typically a safe bet. Or maybe it wasn't so much that he couldn't master the question as he simply didn't want to! Perhaps he wished for her to get caught? Whatever the case, she found herself under the ever-stern gaze of McGongall. Typically she would have had a leg to stand on considering she could multitask to some degree. Usually at the very least least she could stumble around talking in circles until she arrived at the answer of the unknown question, via assistance from McGonagall's nonverbal cues. Today she was beyond that though. Kira had been so immersed in the book she couldn't even bring herself to recall what today's topic was.

Kira held her index finger to mark the page she was on, closing the book over her hand to hide the novel from her professor's sight. "The tyrant grinds down his slaves and they don't turn against him," she mumbled under her breath to herself, rubbing her forehead in between her fingers with her free hand as she glanced to the textbook next to her in an attempt to glean from the pages an idea for a proper response.

"Speak up, Miss Fenwick," McGonagall urged her, at which point Kira knew something needed to be done quickly to deter from the fact she'd just called her teacher a tyrant, Minerva likely taking that as her inaudible response to the question.

"Em..."

As a rule, Sirius didn't pay attention in Transfiguration either. Of course, he never spent his time doing anything like reading a different book; no, he chose instead to sit at the back of the class, lean back in his chair, and pass notes with his mates by magic. It was one of the first magical techniques they'd invented, after they realized McGonagall had hawk eyes and handing one another pieces of paper wasn't going to work. Of course, it had taken them quite a while to master the necessary spellwork, but it was worth it. The four of them had charmed a set of quills to copy whatever one person was writing onto all four of their papers. Occasionally this would get messy, when Remus forgot which quill he was using and decided to actually pay attention and take notes and things. Still, the effects were beyond worth it, especially when one factored in the charmed ink they used that rendered any words invisible to the eye of a non-Marauder.

Sirius frequently paused to admire just how wonderful magic was when you knew how to use it.

As McGonagall talked, Sirius did not so much listen as he did let the words flow into his head and promptly back out again. Today's lecture was on nonverbal spells, something the Marauders had already learned because of their extreme usefulness at pranks. Sirius himself wasn't the best at them, because in tense situations he usually enjoyed being loud, but he could certainly manage well enough to pass in class. And at the moment, anyway, he was working on a complicated drawing of Snape being chased by a ferocious black dog twice his side, dripping grease as he ran. He was just prodding it with his wand to make it move (using a nonverbal spell too: see, McGonagall?) when he noticed the flow of classroom noise come to a stop.

He paused a second and mentally reeled back to see what had happened. McGonagall had asked Lockhart a question about nonverbal spells, and rather than him answering himself, he had neatly passed it off on Kira Fenwick, who had obviously not been paying attention, or else she would have answered it as smoothly as she usually did. Sirius could see Kira falter, and who was he to pass up an opportunity to act out in class and save a damsel in distress in one fell swoop?

"I think Kira's trying to show you rather than tell, Professor, but she can't quite manage it," Sirius piped up, still leaning back on his chair, not even bothering to raise his hand. McGonagall looked down her glasses at him and prepared to scold, but before she could even open her mouth, Sirius continued. "It's all right, Kira. I'll show McGonagall one of the uses of nonverbal spells in a classroom setting for you!"

Before McGonagall could tell him off, Sirius had pointed his wand at the chalkboard under his desk and used a nonverbal spell. Instantly, the words on the board started anagramming themselves into much ruder phrases, and the self-writing chalk began to draw diagrams to accompany the new text. McGonagall glared viciously at him and fixed the board with a roar of her wand, but her initial reprimand could not be heard over the class' laughter. She silenced that with a look and said, steely gaze never leaving Sirius' face, "Grudgingly, I must award Mr. Black five points to Gryffindor for his demonstration of a rather offensive, but nonetheless impressive, nonverbal spell. Considering the content of it, however, I will also award him a detention. Tomorrow night, eight o'clock, in my office, Mr. Black."

Sirius was very, very tempted to add 'I'll bring you flowers for our date, Professor McGonagall,' but chose not to because the year was young, after all, and he already had one detention out of the bargain, no need to make it two (yet). That, and Alice would probably murder him for it because McGonagall would surely also take away the points she'd just awarded him if he made a remark like that. Instead, he chose to just grin and reply "Thank you, Professor." Whether that was in response to the compliment or the detention, no one could be entirely sure: Sirius was drawing close to the record for most detentions at Hogwarts, after all. Satisfied with his little stunt, Sirius went back to his drawing, but not before he shot Kira a wink.

Only Sirius could manage to rescue and insult her in one go. Kira was relieved to find she was no longer on the receiving end of McGonagall's stare down, but her embarrassment over letting the ball drop on that question was redirected at the very boy who'd come to her rescue. Initially she turned her gaze away from Gilderoy toward the familiar voice when it interjected, staring in disbelief along with most of the rest of the class. When Sirius mentioned how it was going to be alright, and he'd do it for her, Kira felt eyes staring through her once again. A few individuals chuckled to one another as she hesitatingly averted her attention back to the blackboard.

True to Sirius Black fashion, the act was both vulgar and impressive. Although Kira had indeed mastered the nonverbal spells, she found herself smirking at the drawings and the creative way in which the boy took the detention in her stead. Even more frustrated over her further debt to Black, as well as her irritation over the fact he implied she couldn't master what was child's play to her, Kira shot a look of caution back his way. The fact Gryffindor was awarded points for that act was absolutely ridiculous, and detention was hardly a proper punishment considering Sirius would likely find a way to turn his time into amusement in some form.

When Sirius didn't have a witty comeback to his detention with McGonagall, Kira was even more put off. The wink he awarded her while she was glaring at him caused her to narrow her eyes at him all the more. It wasn't until she felt pressure on the cover of her book as it was pried open that her eyes were averted back in front of her. "No wonder you were having troubles, Miss Fenwick. Learning the proper technique of nonverbal skills from a muggle novel is not something I'd suggest," McGonagall added, tilting her chin down to peer at Kira from over the top rim of her glasses. "Five points from Ravenclaw." With that McGonagall began to walk back toward the blackboard.

Another student who'd been counting down the minutes shot out of his seat to declare the end of the class period, and all the other students began to follow suit before Professor McGongall really could end the lecture. She attempted to instruct them of the future assignment over the sound of the chatter, but to no avail. Shifting her eyes back to Kira, she called her by name. "Miss Fenwick?" Kira paused mid-step with her back still to McGonagall, cradling her book to her chest with one hand and gripping her messenger bag strap with the other. Shifting around slightly, she didn't even need to face her professor full on to know what was coming. "Join Mr. Black tomorrow. Maybe together you can learn the importance of paying attention in class," she added, raising her eyebrows as Kira turned around once more and gave a slight nod of her head.

As Kira made her way to the door behind several of her classmates, she hesitated just past Sirius' seat. "Can't quite manage it, huh?" Kira mimicked his words to herself, slipping her wand out of her pocket. Spinning around on her toes, she directed her wand at Sirius. James Potter managed to catch sight of her, but the damage had already been done. Sirius' tie unraveled itself and quickly slithered down his body, wrapping itself firmly around his ankles just when he was about to take a step. All of this was done with no words. Lowering her wand into her bag as she watched Sirius' mates gather around him, she smirked in a pleased manner. "Ta, but I don't need saving," Kira added smugly, returning Sirius' wink prior to starting out the door once again.

Sirius knew Kira was going to be irritated with him. After all, even though he'd done his level best to save her from McGonagall, she'd wound up getting in trouble anyway. Still, it was hardly his fault she hadn't been paying attention in class, now, was it?

When the class ended, Sirius stashed his book and quill, and immediately started chatting with his mates as he got ready to head out of the class. It wasn't as if this was the first time Sirius had done something like this, after all--to him, this was just a typical day. One student actually came up, clapped him on the back, and said "Well done, Sirius," which really just made Sirius' ego inflate a little more.

He was thanking that student when Kira came up and cast her a nonverbal spell of her own, so he didn't notice what was happening until it was too late, and he was on the ground. Quidditch reflexes kept him from, say, breaking his nose or wrist: he caught himself on his forearm, which hurt much less than if he had thrown out a hand. It was more of an injury to his pride than anything. The one day he'd actually chosen to wear his uniform tie, and this happened!

Of course, it was only a moment before Sirius was back on his feet, rubbing at his left elbow, and somehow still grinning. His mates had reversed Kira's spell and helped him up in a matter of seconds, as was their way. Though he was a bit embarrassed, at least the classroom was mostly empty, and Sirius did have a solid sense of humour underneath his pride. As Kira was walking out, he called after her, "Wouldn't have suspected you to be so good at spells that undress people. We can trade tips on that kind of 'nonverbal magic' after detention if you like."

Kira had turned her back rather abruptly, as was custom for the girl after tossing an unsuspected book or bit of magic at someone’s back, so she hadn’t seen Potter and his mates help Sirius sort out that mess he’d gotten himself in to. Of course she figured he’d earned it at that point, partly for assuming before the entire class that he knew more than her and partly for acting as if he deserved a gold star for running to her rescue. She was nearly out the door by the time Sirius’ voice rang out over the crowd. Stopping short so quickly that she caused Lockhart to stumble into her back, Kira apologized prior to shifting out of the way. She adjusted her bag further up her arm before allowing her book hand to hang loosely at her side. With a composed, yet forced, smile toward some of their retreating classmates, Kira walked back toward Sirius. Immediately shifting her eyes back to him, she narrowed in on his once more.

McGonagall had resorted to tidying up a stack of parchment, but she’d inclined her head toward the small cluster of students that remained surrounding Sirius. Kira shot her a look over Sirius’ shoulder prior to letting out a bout of cold laughter under her breath. “You’d like that wouldn’t you?” she cut in, glancing toward the other boys prior to looking at the under appreciated, self-proclaimed hero once again. Peter looked slightly on edge which was possibly the only reason Kira felt remotely concerned over the situation at hand. Despite that, she’d about had her fill of Sirius’ pride. Reaching up to his tie that one of his mates had no doubt managed to magically send back to its proper place, Kira tugged him down closer to level with her eyes. “You hear me now, Black. The only thing I think you could do with stripping yourself of is a little bit of that arrogance. If you want me to assist with that, I’d gladly oblige. Keep talking of how much I want to get in your pants, and you’re only succeeding in making yourself look like more of an arse. I don’t want to undress you; I don’t want to snog you. But even if I did, I wouldn’t let myself for the simple fact I don’t think you need anymore notches on your bedpost. You have no respect for women or love whatsoever, and to be honest, most of us have had enough of that to last a lifetime.”

She released her grip on his tie, shifting her eyes to the door prior to adding an additional comment. “Furthermore, I want to serve my time and get out of detention quickly as possible. I should hope someone as noble as yourself wouldn’t prevent that from happening, now would you?”

When Kira turned around and came back in the classroom, Sirius was expecting a witty retort, as usual. He was casual friends with the Ravenclaw and enjoyed the flirty banter they shared, mostly because unlike a lot of girls, she was actually intelligent enough to have some good comeback. Still, to Sirius, it wasn't anything more than that: all these comments were just his typical playful demeanour, and so her reaction was quite unexpected.

Sirius' eyes widened when Kira tugged him down to her level and started telling him off good and proper. For once, Sirius was rendered more or less speechless. Part of him felt slightly ashamed: somewhere in there he must've hit a nerve, and he hadn't been meaning to really upset her. He was just having a good time and assumed she was too. However, he also felt like she was blowing this way out of proportion. He'd said more suggestive things to many people, including Kira. As she finished her tirade and released his tie, Sirius' surprised look shifted to a frown, and he crossed his arms over his chest. If he had thought she didn't enjoy bantering with him, he wouldn't have wasted his time. That rejection alone would have been fairly easy for Sirius to brush off, but her last bit about not respecting women or love touched a bit of a nerve. The phrase "commitment issues" was one that had been thrown at Sirius more than once, and he thought that it was rubbish. He was committed to his mates, after all. He just hadn't found anyone who interested him romantically enough for him to stick around, that was it. Any other explanation was just stupid, especially one like Kira's, and it was that slight that brought Sirius' own guard up.

"See you in detention, Fenwick," was all he said in response. Sirius knew, somewhere deep down, that he should probably apologize, but at the moment he was too busy being stubborn and deciding she had no right to be angry. By the time detention rolled around, he would probably have cooled off enough to apologize (or his version of an apology, anyway).

Probably.

Having been so beside herself with irritation over the entire situation, Kira hadn't initially noticed the response she provoked from Sirius. She was too busy being offended over the fact her pride had been hurt in the process of him playing the charming hero once again. Not only that, she was likely going to return to some pissed off Ravenclaws over the fact she'd lost them points. Sirius had turned up with the better end of the deal, and she wouldn't live that down in the near future.

Ironically, while Sirius was pinning all the blame for Kira's attitude on her, she was blaming the entire situation on him. Somewhere deep down she knew all she could expect of Sirius was this behavior, but the fact she was made to look foolish in the process, at least as far as she could see, was entirely his fault. A few more seconds and she could have very well blurted out the proper answer, or at least one that would direct McGonagall to clarify. She responded in typical fashion of someone who'd felt bested to a degree, and then to have him remarking on her removing his clothes just drove the nail further. The excitement of the entire situation, coupled with the rather shocked expressions of some of Sirius' mates, left Kira feeling even more irked with him. Of course she would be the one that looked bad to his mates as well; she didn't expect any differently.

After Sirius' face dimmed a little, Kira knew that there was an unmistakable wedge between them. She wanted nothing more than to say something, and her lips parted slightly to do just that. However, his closed off appearance just made her more irritated every second she remained in front of him. Pursing her lips together as she narrowed her eyes, trying not to look any more put off than she did already, Kira simply gave a miffed nod of her head with a huffy cross between a laugh and a sigh. Without further ado, Kira spun back around, closing her eyes briefly enough to attempt to regain composure prior to leaving the classroom.
