Status: Complete

Though Kira had made a pact within herself to avoid switching out textbook covers with more tempting reads this year, she found herself back at square one denying the commitment was ever made. And no less than a few weeks in to classes at that! It began as a step and progressed into spiraling downward as if being pulled by gravity on a near vertical slope. She switched out her Potions text but purposely left the book in her dormitory for a several days. However, the further she got in to Wuthering Heights, the greater the temptation. Kira had read the book before, but it had been a while since she last visited the familiar pages. The story always managed to rope her in, and before she realized the weight of what she was doing, Kira switched out the Potions binding for her Transfiguration cover.

She hardly considered herself in the proper state of mind at that point, and so was past the point of acknowledging Professor McGonagall the last instructor she wanted to cross that afternoon. Kira rationalized that McGonagall would likely call on students avoiding her gaze, so she'd simply glance up from her book on occasion or give an occasional nod as if piecing it all together.

"If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the Universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it," she mouthed to herself, skimming the familiar chapter as if traveling at the speed of light.

She managed to get through nearly the entire class period prior to getting sniffed out. Unfortunately for her, one of her classmates decided to volunteer Kira to answer one of the questions he himself couldn't master, typically a safe bet. Or maybe it wasn't so much that he couldn't master the question as he simply didn't want to! Perhaps he wished for her to get caught? Whatever the case, she found herself under the ever-stern gaze of McGongall. Typically she would have had a leg to stand on considering she could multitask to some degree. Usually at the very least least she could stumble around talking in circles until she arrived at the answer of the unknown question, via assistance from McGonagall's nonverbal cues. Today she was beyond that though. Kira had been so immersed in the book she couldn't even bring herself to recall what today's topic was.

Kira held her index finger to mark the page she was on, closing the book over her hand to hide the novel from her professor's sight. "The tyrant grinds down his slaves and they don't turn against him," she mumbled under her breath to herself, rubbing her forehead in between her fingers with her free hand as she glanced to the textbook next to her in an attempt to glean from the pages an idea for a proper response.

"Speak up, Miss Fenwick," McGonagall urged her, at which point Kira knew something needed to be done quickly to deter from the fact she'd just called her teacher a tyrant, Minerva likely taking that as her inaudible response to the question.

"Em..."

Kira had turned her back rather abruptly, as was custom for the girl after tossing an unsuspected book or bit of magic at someone’s back, so she hadn’t seen Potter and his mates help Sirius sort out that mess he’d gotten himself in to. Of course she figured he’d earned it at that point, partly for assuming before the entire class that he knew more than her and partly for acting as if he deserved a gold star for running to her rescue. She was nearly out the door by the time Sirius’ voice rang out over the crowd. Stopping short so quickly that she caused Lockhart to stumble into her back, Kira apologized prior to shifting out of the way. She adjusted her bag further up her arm before allowing her book hand to hang loosely at her side. With a composed, yet forced, smile toward some of their retreating classmates, Kira walked back toward Sirius. Immediately shifting her eyes back to him, she narrowed in on his once more.

McGonagall had resorted to tidying up a stack of parchment, but she’d inclined her head toward the small cluster of students that remained surrounding Sirius. Kira shot her a look over Sirius’ shoulder prior to letting out a bout of cold laughter under her breath. “You’d like that wouldn’t you?” she cut in, glancing toward the other boys prior to looking at the under appreciated, self-proclaimed hero once again. Peter looked slightly on edge which was possibly the only reason Kira felt remotely concerned over the situation at hand. Despite that, she’d about had her fill of Sirius’ pride. Reaching up to his tie that one of his mates had no doubt managed to magically send back to its proper place, Kira tugged him down closer to level with her eyes. “You hear me now, Black. The only thing I think you could do with stripping yourself of is a little bit of that arrogance. If you want me to assist with that, I’d gladly oblige. Keep talking of how much I want to get in your pants, and you’re only succeeding in making yourself look like more of an arse. I don’t want to undress you; I don’t want to snog you. But even if I did, I wouldn’t let myself for the simple fact I don’t think you need anymore notches on your bedpost. You have no respect for women or love whatsoever, and to be honest, most of us have had enough of that to last a lifetime.”

She released her grip on his tie, shifting her eyes to the door prior to adding an additional comment. “Furthermore, I want to serve my time and get out of detention quickly as possible. I should hope someone as noble as yourself wouldn’t prevent that from happening, now would you?”

When Kira turned around and came back in the classroom, Sirius was expecting a witty retort, as usual. He was casual friends with the Ravenclaw and enjoyed the flirty banter they shared, mostly because unlike a lot of girls, she was actually intelligent enough to have some good comeback. Still, to Sirius, it wasn't anything more than that: all these comments were just his typical playful demeanour, and so her reaction was quite unexpected.

Sirius' eyes widened when Kira tugged him down to her level and started telling him off good and proper. For once, Sirius was rendered more or less speechless. Part of him felt slightly ashamed: somewhere in there he must've hit a nerve, and he hadn't been meaning to really upset her. He was just having a good time and assumed she was too. However, he also felt like she was blowing this way out of proportion. He'd said more suggestive things to many people, including Kira. As she finished her tirade and released his tie, Sirius' surprised look shifted to a frown, and he crossed his arms over his chest. If he had thought she didn't enjoy bantering with him, he wouldn't have wasted his time. That rejection alone would have been fairly easy for Sirius to brush off, but her last bit about not respecting women or love touched a bit of a nerve. The phrase "commitment issues" was one that had been thrown at Sirius more than once, and he thought that it was rubbish. He was committed to his mates, after all. He just hadn't found anyone who interested him romantically enough for him to stick around, that was it. Any other explanation was just stupid, especially one like Kira's, and it was that slight that brought Sirius' own guard up.

"See you in detention, Fenwick," was all he said in response. Sirius knew, somewhere deep down, that he should probably apologize, but at the moment he was too busy being stubborn and deciding she had no right to be angry. By the time detention rolled around, he would probably have cooled off enough to apologize (or his version of an apology, anyway).

Probably.

Having been so beside herself with irritation over the entire situation, Kira hadn't initially noticed the response she provoked from Sirius. She was too busy being offended over the fact her pride had been hurt in the process of him playing the charming hero once again. Not only that, she was likely going to return to some pissed off Ravenclaws over the fact she'd lost them points. Sirius had turned up with the better end of the deal, and she wouldn't live that down in the near future.

Ironically, while Sirius was pinning all the blame for Kira's attitude on her, she was blaming the entire situation on him. Somewhere deep down she knew all she could expect of Sirius was this behavior, but the fact she was made to look foolish in the process, at least as far as she could see, was entirely his fault. A few more seconds and she could have very well blurted out the proper answer, or at least one that would direct McGonagall to clarify. She responded in typical fashion of someone who'd felt bested to a degree, and then to have him remarking on her removing his clothes just drove the nail further. The excitement of the entire situation, coupled with the rather shocked expressions of some of Sirius' mates, left Kira feeling even more irked with him. Of course she would be the one that looked bad to his mates as well; she didn't expect any differently.

After Sirius' face dimmed a little, Kira knew that there was an unmistakable wedge between them. She wanted nothing more than to say something, and her lips parted slightly to do just that. However, his closed off appearance just made her more irritated every second she remained in front of him. Pursing her lips together as she narrowed her eyes, trying not to look any more put off than she did already, Kira simply gave a miffed nod of her head with a huffy cross between a laugh and a sigh. Without further ado, Kira spun back around, closing her eyes briefly enough to attempt to regain composure prior to leaving the classroom.
