Though Kira had made a pact within herself to avoid switching out textbook covers with more tempting reads this year, she found herself back at square one denying the commitment was ever made. And no less than a few weeks in to classes at that! It began as a step and progressed into spiraling downward as if being pulled by gravity on a near vertical slope. She switched out her Potions text but purposely left the book in her dormitory for a several days. However, the further she got in to Wuthering Heights, the greater the temptation. Kira had read the book before, but it had been a while since she last visited the familiar pages. The story always managed to rope her in, and before she realized the weight of what she was doing, Kira switched out the Potions binding for her Transfiguration cover.
She hardly considered herself in the proper state of mind at that point, and so was past the point of acknowledging Professor McGonagall the last instructor she wanted to cross that afternoon. Kira rationalized that McGonagall would likely call on students avoiding her gaze, so she'd simply glance up from her book on occasion or give an occasional nod as if piecing it all together.
"If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the Universe would turn to a mighty stranger: I should not seem a part of it," she mouthed to herself, skimming the familiar chapter as if traveling at the speed of light.
She managed to get through nearly the entire class period prior to getting sniffed out. Unfortunately for her, one of her classmates decided to volunteer Kira to answer one of the questions he himself couldn't master, typically a safe bet. Or maybe it wasn't so much that he couldn't master the question as he simply didn't want to! Perhaps he wished for her to get caught? Whatever the case, she found herself under the ever-stern gaze of McGongall. Typically she would have had a leg to stand on considering she could multitask to some degree. Usually at the very least least she could stumble around talking in circles until she arrived at the answer of the unknown question, via assistance from McGonagall's nonverbal cues. Today she was beyond that though. Kira had been so immersed in the book she couldn't even bring herself to recall what today's topic was.
Kira held her index finger to mark the page she was on, closing the book over her hand to hide the novel from her professor's sight. "The tyrant grinds down his slaves and they don't turn against him," she mumbled under her breath to herself, rubbing her forehead in between her fingers with her free hand as she glanced to the textbook next to her in an attempt to glean from the pages an idea for a proper response.
"Speak up, Miss Fenwick," McGonagall urged her, at which point Kira knew something needed to be done quickly to deter from the fact she'd just called her teacher a tyrant, Minerva likely taking that as her inaudible response to the question.
