Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Aurelia and Felicity
WHEN: Saturday, October 23. Evening
WHERE: Slytherin Dorm; Felicity's Room
WHAT: Commiserating a sad day. Plotting people's demise to cheer them up. Being fabulous. The usual ;)
RATING: Likely low unless they start cursing; which is unlikely because they're LADIES.

Today was just not a good day. Really, nothing more terrible than normal had happened. Aurelia didn't have never-ending back luck, nor did everything she try to do turn into a disaster. It was nothing out of the ordinary as far as anyone else might be concerned. That was just another part of the carefully controlled mask she wore, however. And it was also just further proof that everyone at this school was full of idiots. Nobody seemed to remember that today was indeed no ordinary day. It was actually Samson's birthday, though there were very few who seemed to even think of her poor brother anymore. Sighing, Aurelia shook off the frown that had set itself between her eyes and tried to look aloof and charming all at once. She could not break down until she got to Felicity's dorm. Even then, she wasn't entirely sure of how to handle the memory that had hovered over her like a black cloud all day. Pulling her dark hair up into a ponytail, she grabbed a stash of sweets from her trunk at the end of her bed and headed towards the Slytherin dungeons.

Instead of stopping in the halls to greet and chat with people she might know, Aurelia headed straight for her destination. She was a girl on a mission, and it was apparent in her expression. Or at least she assumed it was, because students stepped out of her way as she walked hurriedly instead of trying to engage her. Once she made it past the doorway, having given the correct password that Felicity had passed on earlier, she knew exactly which way to go. Several students looked up as she passed, but nobody questioned her presence there. That was the beauty of being Aurelia Parkinson. People rarely questioned her because they knew what she was capable of. Knocking on the door to Felicity's room, she tapped her foot a little as she waited for her friend to answer.

"To Sam," repeated Felicity solemnly, as she tilted her glass to clink with Aurelia's. The ring of the glasses filled the otherwise thick silence that lay between the two girls. She looked at Aurelia's eyes and noticed that she appeared downtrodden. Not that she could ever blame her -- after all, it had been the summer after her fourth year when she found out. Barely two years had passed, yet the whole tragedy still felt raw, like a gaping wound. What would it be like, Felicity wondered, if Samson were alive and well at this moment?

She smoothed over the sheets on her bed and motioned for Aurelia to sit at the foot of the bed. "Here, come over," she kindly offered. She patted at the spot next to her. "Happy 18th birthday, Samson Parkinson," she said, as if Sam were standing right in front of her. She took another sip of wine. She tried to imagine him as eighteen, but somehow, he only registered as Samson-the-fourth-year, as she had last remembered him. She kicked her legs back and forth in a nervous manner, like a little kid. Maybe it was better to remember him like that, she thought wistfully. She smiled sadly at Aurelia before wrapping her free arm tightly around the girl's shoulders.

The solemn tone in Felicity's voice just confirmed that she was feeling the same way today. It was a comfort to know that Aurelia wasn't completely alone. Mostly she didn't care that her family was less than stellar and that she was independent where they were concerned, but when it came to remembering her brother she hated that fact. It felt like just yesterday that they had been sitting in the living room and giggling. Or he was sneaking her into Slytherin dorms so she could escape her insipid housemates. Samson had never judged her for being placed in the lesser house she was in.

"I almost bought a present before I remembered." Aurelia might have had almost two years to come to terms with this, but it all felt so fresh sometimes. Taking a seat next to Felicity, she sipped the wine heartily before returning the older girl's half hug. Not many people could indulge in this kind of companionship with Aurelia. She definitely had more affection for Felicity than anyone else.

Felicity gave Aurelia's shoulder a light, comforting squeeze. The number of people she truly cared about were quite few and far between, but she had always felt fortunate to count Aurelia among them. She could barely fathom how painful it must have been for Aurelia to endure such a loss, especially at such a young age. And to think about how wonderfully the two siblings got along only seemed to rub fresh salt on the wound. In a way, Felicity envied that type of brother-sister relationship that seemed to transcend the expected pureblood family stereotype. Dwelling on this only made Felicity want to reach out to Aurelia more, even though she knew she could never fill the empty elder-brother shoes that Samson had left behind. "A present?" Felicity's ears perked up. "Mind if I see?" she asked kindly. She wondered what the girl could have brought today.

"Yes. I was at Hogsmede and I saw it in one of the shop's, and I bought part of it without thinking." Aurelia felt a bit embarrassed that she'd done something so silly. She knew Felicity wouldn't judge her in that way, but it was a natural reaction she couldn't really help. Samson had been gone for almost two years, but sometimes she forgot still. She wondered if that was ever going to go away. Part of her hoped it did, but a bigger part hoped it didn't. The whole thing was hard, and she felt so alone most of the time; especially when she was at home. "I didn't bring it with me, it's in my room, but it's a pocket watch, gold, and engraved with his initials and the Slytherin crest. He was always so proud to be in Slytherin," Aurelia said, furrowing her brow a bit with the irritating reminder that she had not been sorted here.

"That sounds beautiful, Aurelia," said Felicity. "I'm sure he would have loved it," she added baldly, a tone of sincerity in her voice. Samson was always proud of his house, and every seventeen-year-old boy who came of age always looked forward to receiving a watch. It was a sign of adulthood, and the more Felicity pondered how much the watch would have dearly meant to Samson, the more unjust his death seemed. He was far too young, and the fact that he would never get to experience mundane events like OWLs, NEWTs, the Quidditch Cup, and being legal struck her. It made her want to be a temperamental little girl and throw fits until the problem got better, but Felicity knew, with a heavy heart, that nothing she could do could bring him back. She gave Aurelia another hug. "Maybe when we're on the school holiday, we could..." she paused for a moment, nearly stumbling on her train of thought. "We could visit him. And we could give the watch to him."
