Son, you outgrew my lap, but never my heart.

***

James tossed his journal up in the air and caught it, and then he tossed it up in the air and missed it and it fell on the coffee table, nearly knocking over an empty cereal bowl that he'd left there the morning prior. He looked around sheepishly like he may get in trouble, but Teddy wasn't there, and he didn't live with Lily, which at stupid moments like these may have been a good thing.

Potter was pretty sure that he knew a thing or two about women, even if he still considered it damn near a miracle that he'd finally landed Evans. He'd been a popular student in school, and there had been quick a few, 'short-term' relationships before he'd finally won the ultimate prize that he'd been after since about fifth year. Lily was the best, and he couldn't even think about her without his heart swelling in size.

But that wasn't to say that he and Lily hadn't ever had problems. They'd had fights, he'd slept on the couch, and sometimes it wasn't over funny little jokes or rude things he'd said. Going through a war put a lot of strain on a relationship--going through a war with a pregnant wife added even more. There were days when he'd envied Sirius' freedom for not being tied down, and he was positive that there were days that Lily regretted marrying him at all. It didn't mean that they loved each other less, it just meant that they were normal.

Jamed hoped that he could offer some advice. It was something he longed to do. He wanted more than anything to be able to offer Harry something but he always felt like it was a bit ridiculous to think that he could. All the self-confidence in the world didn't make up for the fact that Harry was nearly twice his age, married for nearly two decades as opposed to four years, and he'd raised his kids which was something James never had the privilege of doing.

He threw himself onto the sofa and tucked his journal beneath one of the cushions. He'd already gotten beers from the fridge and sat them near by. The only thing missing from the equation was Harry and James was already tired of waiting for him. Patience was not one of his strong suits.

"I've just learned enough in my life to know that Albus is not someone I'll ever be able to 'slip one by' if you know. Ruddy--honest to Merlin I think he knew absolutely ever stunt that Pads and I pulled, without exception."

"I wouldn't be surprised. The man knew where I was even when I was under the cloak. And holding my breath."

"I know, right?" James laughed and shook his head. He rubbed his chin with the back of his hand. "So how are you feeling, then, Harry?"

Such a good question, and one that dimmed Harry's smile. The answer surprised even himself. "Better. I feel a lot better." Who cared if Ginny was being... well. Ginny. It was depressing, the fact that he would never have thought such a thing of her back home; that this was simply Ginny being Ginny, that she would be like this, that it would upset him this much. It put everything into question and Harry didn't like it. And yet, he was having a beer with James Potter sr., the man who had given his life to protect his wife and son. That put everything into perspective.

"A lot better. How about you?"

"I'm alive Harry." James shrugged. "So I really can't complain about much else, can I?"

"Sure you can," Harry said with a shrug of his own. "I do it all the time and I should've been dead... eight times over by now."

"Right but Harry, I think I've actually outlived myself by this point. I thought about it the other day, really but--but if I was meant to die that night then--aren't I days, weeks--almost a month older than I should be?" James shook his head. "It's scary, it is real scary."

Harry nodded. It was true. It really was scary, and James really had outlived himself. "You're not alone there, I have to say. Regulus Black, Mum... she's years older than she should be. Cedric Diggory - he's... I saw him die. The Prewetts are coming up to their date fast. Not that-- Not that it doesn't mean anything to me or that it shouldn't matter to you, of course. But James, this is... this is good. And this is life, now. For now. You get to complain to your heart's content."

"Life that might end at any minute, Harry." James said quietly. "And I'll never see it coming. But then, I guess that's what it is for me. I never see it coming. Trusted--"

He didn't want to go there. Shaking his head he picked up his drink to finish it off.

Harry didn't need James to finish that thought. He knew how it ended. Were he in James' place, he wouldn't have been able to keep from thinking about it, no matter how much he would have wanted to. Harry finished his beer as well. Not that there had been much left to finish.

"I wish everything had turned out differently. I'd've liked to have you as a father." And when had the conversation turned so depressing? "Anyway. I should probably get going."

James looked at him. "I would have liked to've been there for my son, Harry."

Harry hadn't lost his tendency to stick his foot in his mouth to the knee, it seemed. "I'm sorry, dad. James."

"Not your fault, Harry. It was mine." He shrugged a little, and tried not to let his son see how tight his chest suddenly felt. James was not about to let Harry see him cry.
