Cassandra hadn't yet told Elphias what her vision had been of. She didn't know how he was going to react. At first, she hadn't known how to react. She had been quite startled. She had simply never been involved with someone in that matter before and didn't tend to think of people in terms of attraction. It was strange to see Elphias in a new light. She did enjoy being with him. And once she had thought about it a little more, she had to admit that there was some appeal to what had been presented in her vision.

In any case, she had managed to end their walk off as cordially as she could. Of course he had known something was amiss. It was obvious. But she thought she had acted normally enough all things considered.

She thought that it was a good sign that he was going to come over today. He had mentioned something a game that he had created and Cassandra had to admit that she was interested in seeing what it was that he worked on. She figured that this was a good opportunity to make things more normal between them again.

She had made a pie for his arrival. She was a little tired of cakes after all the work that she had done on the one for Helga's birthday -- although it was certainly worth it after seeing Helga's arrival. However, she didn't really think that Elphias would mind. He seemed to enjoy all manners of sweets.

"I have to go get my wand then," Cassandra said with a small smile. She pushed back her chair and hurried up the stairs to retrieve it from where she left it in the bedroom. Really, she had little use for a wand. She had carried it with her when she had worried about what Gellert would do and she carried it with her when she left the house. Now, she tended to leave it where it was best out of the way.

She picked it up, although it felt a little strange in her hand, and moved back down to the table where Elphias was waiting.

"Ready," Cassandra said with a nod, although she was already watching the cards in a rather determined fashion. She thought it a rather odd game, something that exploded in one's face, but she was already looking forward to playing; perhaps it was because, as a child, she'd had few games to play. She'd only had whatever she could entertain herself with, which usually meant helping her mother and reading.

No. Nothing.

Excited, Elphias looked across at her, mouth slightly open and wand poised above the deck, waiting. Waiting for what, Cassandra wouldn’t know, but waiting for anticipation to have built to his satisfaction. And then, without warning, dropped his wand to the deck.

The cards started shuffling themselves into stacks, face up, just as predicted, with a healthy tempo. At the first pair (alohomoras), Elphias quickly tapped both cards with his wand. The cards disappeared, revealing those beneath, and reappeared at his elbow.

“Like that.”

Cassandra watched intently as Elphias showed her how to play. She nodded, her concentration absolute. She wanted to do well at this, and was also feeling oddly excited. She was holding her wand perhaps a little too tight; it was a long and slender build. If she was being honest, she couldn't actually remember the last time that she had used it in Lockewood.

In any case, she wasn't thinking about that at the moment. She watched as the cards flipped through themselves, moving at a rather moderate pace for the time being. When she saw a pair of cards, she quickly tried to tap them with their wand, letting out something of a little laugh as she reached for them, trying to get to them before Elphias did.

Elphias had only hit one of the cards by the time Cassandra had touched the two. The cards disappeared and reappeared at her elbow while the cards kept shuffling into place.

"Aw. Missed! Very good!" He was grinning, and may have been looking up at her rather than at the cards. Always so proper and put together, this young lady; and now she was having fun. Elphias liked this version of her so very much. In fact, her normal demeanor, compared with her current, almost childlike sense of fun, made it all the better.

Elphias returned his attention to the game just in time to spot two cards, which he tapped, and which promptly exploded in his face. "AH! Sorry. Wrong ones..." And the cards at his elbow disappeared.

Cassandra was only momentarily distracted when Elphias complimented her on managing to snag two of the cards before he did. She looked up at him, her gaze floating away from the game for a moment. She returned his smile, looking absolutely pleased.

Cassandra let out a startled, but still amused sound when the game exploded in Elphias' face. It clearly wasn't enough to hurt him - it was just a game after all, and it was one that Elphias had made. But it still made enough noise and smoke that it gave one a good shock.

"Oh dear," Cassandra said, unable to help her laughter.

Elphias seriously considered reaching out to kiss her, and to hell with the game. It worked, that much was now quite clear. But then, she was still very young, and there was no telling how comfortable - or uncomfortable - she would be with that sort of thing. Probably very uncomfortable, if the girls from their time... Elphias smiled at her laughter. It was a beautiful sound.

"Yes. Don't hit the wrong two or else you might lose your eyebrows. And you wouldn't be quite as beautiful without those." The cards were beginning to shuffle a little faster now. Elphias caught another pair to make up for the one he'd lost, and moved to take another.

Cassandra looked up perhaps a little too quickly when he commented on the fact that she was beautiful. She quickly looked back down at the cards so that it didn't look like she had reacted to what he had said, but honestly, she was more than a little surprised by the comment. It was unexpected. She wasn't certain if she blushed or not.

She didn't know if anyone had ever called her beautiful before. It wasn't something that she was used to, but it just seemed to remind her that she was on new ground with Elphias. There was something between them, something that she had seen, that she didn't fully understand. She didn't know how to contend with it and she wondered how aware Elphias was of it.

She wanted to say something, something that would return the moment to what it was, to smooth things over once again, but her brain had jammed. She couldn't think of anything to say.

He caught the slight movement of her head as she looked up at him and then quickly looked back down at the cards, out of his peripheral vision. Elphias similarly lifted his gaze. Cassandra was blushing. That certainly answered a few questions. He was lucky he hadn't kissed her, then. She was already... Elphias honestly didn't know how to interpret her silence. She might not have been upset - that didn't look like an angry blush - but if she hadn't been expecting such a comment, the surprise alone might have made her react negatively. Which was a right shame, she looked positively snoggable.

"You're not told that often, are you?" he asked, in the ensuing silence, two pairs of cards swiftly claimed by his wand.

Cassandra was quiet for a moment after Elphias asked her the question. She didn't exactly know how to answer; she was thrown somewhat off balance and was now distracted from the game.

"I didn't have many friends in school," she admitted without much warning. She didn't know why she had such a thing. Surely, Elphias didn't really want to hear about that. People didn't really want to hear about the sad parts. It made things complicated and awkward. And it was also something of a lead-in to what she was. There had been a very definite reason for why she had had few friends and it was because she was much stranger than anyone else she had known at Hogwarts. It was the bad sort of strange.

That was a strange statement that pulled Elphias's attention from the cards as well. They continued to shuffle faster and faster on the table, the different decks growing rapidly now, unheeded. Did friends usually call each other beautiful? Elphias honestly didn't know; it wasn't as though he and Albus were in the habit of trading that sort of compliment. Though perhaps women were different, he supposed.

"Why not?" he asked innocently, with a smile. "I'd've though you'd have had a bunch of them. Wouldn't know what to do with them! You're pretty wonderful." Unless she'd had dragon pox when she started at Hogwarts too; that would set anyone back.

Cassandra faltered when Elphias asked her the question. She knew that it wasn't exactly unprecedented. She knew that she should have expected it. The problem was, she didn't know whether she wanted to lie or tell the truth. The impulse was to lie; lying was what kept her safe. It was what kept away the Gellert Grindelwalds of the world.

The problem was that it was difficult not to have anyone that she trusted and considered a friend. She trusted Harry, but she wasn't sure how much she considered him a friend. Which wasn't to say there was anything wrong with him; she just didn't see him in the same way that she saw Elphias. She considered Elphias a friend. But she still didn't know if she could trust him.

"I'm a Seer," Cassandra said finally, although she sounded rather uncertain and she was looking determinedly at the game instead of at Elphias.

"Oh!" Elphias, too, was staring at the cards. He'd been taken aback by that revelation and didn't know just what to do with it. On the one hand, anyone who admitted to being a Seer generally wasn't. Often, it was just someone trying to make money off of lying to people about their future, telling them what they obviously wanted to hear. Because... well, he supposed people treated them differently when they knew the truth of the situation. Of course some people really did have to be true Seers - they did exist. It just-- Well, given that she did claim to have been treated differently because of it, he supposed... not that he wouldn't have believed her otherwise...

It would be in poor taste to ask her why she didn't know ahead of time where to put her wand at this game, wouldn't it? Elphias refrained, and caught another pair.

"Do you like being a Seer? I mean, besides not having very many friends."

"Not at all," Cassandra answered quietly, a little caught up in how incredibly surreal this moment was. She didn't really know how she had thought Elphias would react if she shared such news with him. She wasn't really ever sure how anybody would react; deep down, she supposed she thought that, in the end, everyone really was a Gellert Grindelwald, but only certain people were able to readily show that side of themselves. Not everyone was willing to reach for what they actually wanted because the rules of society dictated that they didn't.

Still, it was quietly confusing, because she didn't know how to go about telling him that it was absolutely awful because most of the time people thought she was a liar. They didn't trust her. They thought she was making up stories. If they did believe her, they were uncomfortable around her. Her professors thought she was a cheater. She was awful at almost every other branch of magic except for those associated with Divination. She had seen them in bed together.

“Oh.” The answer seemed to disappoint Elphias, whose gaze remained averted, fixed on the cards that were now moving at a dizzying speed. He placed his hand on the receiving pile, and the cards instantly stopped. They were quickly shuffled back into a pile, a rubber band wrapped around them to keep from losing any. “Do you not want to talk about it? I’ll understand, if- if you don’t want to talk about it. But I’ve never met a Seer before. So I never got to… know how it works and… We can watch television. Or eat muffins. Or do both at once, maybe, if you like.”

"I," Cassandra started to say, pressing one hand in against her forehead. She didn't know what to say, she realized. She didn't know how to explain this and make it seem as if it was real. She couldn't help but feel frustrated, because she hated how this conversation never seemed to work out well. Now, she was frightfully worried that she had made the wrong decision in telling Elphias.

"I almost never tell anyone," Cassandra said finally, because she really wanted him to understand the magnitude of the revelation. "People rarely believe me. And if they do - it's often for self gain."

The last part was a ridiculous understatement, but it was true in the barest of terms. There were only a handful of people in her life who actively knew and understood what she was and sought nothing for themselves.
