Wandering through the mall, Kate bit back a little bit of a shudder at being there. Kate was never one of those women who got the greatest joy out of shopping. Quite the opposite, she was the get in-get out kind of person, and did not entirely want to spend the entire day at the mall. She was however, looking forward to spending the afternoon solely with Abigail. It had been far too long since she had a day just with Abby, and she knew that was mainly her fault. With Taylah off at a friend's house for a play-date, Kate was ready to enjoy the afternoon.

"Okay so." She said, breaking the silence as she looked around at the stores they passed. "I'm going to say ... we can bypass Victoria's Secret. They need none of that in a men's prison." She teased, bumping Abby's shoulder with her elbow. She'd missed the way that she and Abby had been able to go and do things, the way that they had been able to talk and joke, more than just a normal mother-daughter relationship, but one that might have been described as unconventional. When it was three of them, Kate prided herself on the relationship she had with her daughters. Sure, she'd yell and fight with them like any mother, but there was something different there, something stronger than the normal mother-daughter relationship. That bond seemed to have been fractured since Izzy's death, and Kate had neglected trying to put it back together. Today she was going to be back to her old self, at least where Abby was concerned.

"Now here's the real question, what exactly will they allow your father to have in his cell?" She said, pursing her lips together as she contemplated which store they should go to first.

“Nothing!” Abigail replied with an over-exaggerated sigh as she trudged through the mall after her Mother, she didn’t mind shopping, in fact when she’d woken up that morning, she been of the belief that today’s activities would be fun, but at the time she hadn’t realized how hard it would be to buy for the man who had nothing on account of him residing in prison, “Prison is all about communistic Ideologies; common ownership and dirty equality of the lowest and nameless form, it’s nothing but a socioeconomic study cooked up by Big Brother to waste our money on these ineffectual ‘Joycamps’ and by our money, I mean your money, on account of the fact that I don’t pay taxes.” she wasn’t entirely serious, but lately she’d found that sometimes it felt good to vent, even if she did sound like a deranged lunitic.

Kate couldn't help but let out a hearty laugh at Abigail's 'rant', shaking her head a little as she did. "Honey, you are going to make an excellent lawyer someday ... or president." She said, smiling wide as she looped an arm around her in a half-hug. Kate had been slightly anxious to let Abby out of her sight since she'd run off to New Mexico, but was relieved that there seemed to be no residual anger between them. Their family needed to heal, and that had to start with those of them who were home.

She wandered with her down the walkway between stores, trying to think of what they could get for Patrick, as her daughter so deftly pointed out, there were few things they could give him. "Well, I loved the one you guys made for me." She commented, though the corners of her mouth tugged down in a frown. Children shouldn't have to live through not only one, but both of their parents spending time in prison. "I think we might have to make him some of your grandmother's famous cookies and just hope that they make it past the guards, for a start." As much as she didn't like to remember her time in prison, and the events surrounding it, she tried to think of things she would have appreciated during her time in prison.

"With my shady senior-attendance, I don't think they'd have me" She moved around a throng of fellow teenagers, trying not to lose her Mother in the evening crowd. When Isabella had been alive, Abigail had always hated going shopping, it always seemed as though her Mother and Isabella had more uncommon, Abigail didn't mind shopping anymore, she just hated the Mall. The Mall was Isabella's territory, "Alright" Abigail agreed with a nod, as she power-walked to catch up with her Mother, "We definitely know Dad likes cookies. What about a book? He's probably got plenty of time to kill in there, and I can't really see him taking up basketball"

"Anybody would be lucky to have you." She said with a nod, smiling down at her. And if they didn't think so, they'd just have to have a new Connelly wing at the school of her choosing. Nothing was too good for her kids, as far as Kate was concerned. Kate laughed at the thought of Patrick playing basketball and shook her head. "No, your father never was an athlete." He was the guy that the athletes were afraid of, and knew better than to piss him off. She had always thought he was so dangerous when they were kids, it just took her a while to realize he was in fact, very dangerous.

"I think a book is an excellent idea. Nothing too heavy." She said, considering what her husband might actually read. She wandered toward the book store with Abby, glancing around when they walked in. She used to love book stores, but hadn't been in one for a very long time.

“I think we should get him something that he wouldn’t normally read” she suggested helpfully as she walked into the book store, selecting a row of shelves at random. Scanning the selection, she randomly plucked the most colorful book from it’s home and glanced down at the cover, “The Lost Bible of Rastafarian Wisdom and Faith?” the teenage blonde asked as she held the book aloft for her Mother to see.

"I agree." She said with a decisive nod as she looked around the new arrivals section. Kate looked up when Abigail suggested a book. She laughed aloud, walking over to her and picking it up. "Definitely one your father would not normally read. Though do we really want him coming back with dreadlocks and half-stoned all the time? He would hardly be productive." She said, laughing a little bit as she handed the book back to her daughter. "I wonder if they have a 'breaking out of prison, for dummies' book around here." She teased, giving her a wink before she went to scanning the book shelves.

It was good to be out, to joke around and have fun like they used to. Kate had begun to figure that so long as she couldn't change the fact that her husband was in prison, she might as well accept it, and focus on being a good mother to her girls. Patrick would be out soon enough, she had to believe that.
