Wandering through the mall, Kate bit back a little bit of a shudder at being there. Kate was never one of those women who got the greatest joy out of shopping. Quite the opposite, she was the get in-get out kind of person, and did not entirely want to spend the entire day at the mall. She was however, looking forward to spending the afternoon solely with Abigail. It had been far too long since she had a day just with Abby, and she knew that was mainly her fault. With Taylah off at a friend's house for a play-date, Kate was ready to enjoy the afternoon.

"Okay so." She said, breaking the silence as she looked around at the stores they passed. "I'm going to say ... we can bypass Victoria's Secret. They need none of that in a men's prison." She teased, bumping Abby's shoulder with her elbow. She'd missed the way that she and Abby had been able to go and do things, the way that they had been able to talk and joke, more than just a normal mother-daughter relationship, but one that might have been described as unconventional. When it was three of them, Kate prided herself on the relationship she had with her daughters. Sure, she'd yell and fight with them like any mother, but there was something different there, something stronger than the normal mother-daughter relationship. That bond seemed to have been fractured since Izzy's death, and Kate had neglected trying to put it back together. Today she was going to be back to her old self, at least where Abby was concerned.

"Now here's the real question, what exactly will they allow your father to have in his cell?" She said, pursing her lips together as she contemplated which store they should go to first.

“I think we should get him something that he wouldn’t normally read” she suggested helpfully as she walked into the book store, selecting a row of shelves at random. Scanning the selection, she randomly plucked the most colorful book from it’s home and glanced down at the cover, “The Lost Bible of Rastafarian Wisdom and Faith?” the teenage blonde asked as she held the book aloft for her Mother to see.

"I agree." She said with a decisive nod as she looked around the new arrivals section. Kate looked up when Abigail suggested a book. She laughed aloud, walking over to her and picking it up. "Definitely one your father would not normally read. Though do we really want him coming back with dreadlocks and half-stoned all the time? He would hardly be productive." She said, laughing a little bit as she handed the book back to her daughter. "I wonder if they have a 'breaking out of prison, for dummies' book around here." She teased, giving her a wink before she went to scanning the book shelves.

It was good to be out, to joke around and have fun like they used to. Kate had begun to figure that so long as she couldn't change the fact that her husband was in prison, she might as well accept it, and focus on being a good mother to her girls. Patrick would be out soon enough, she had to believe that.
