To Magister Edward Kyteler:
I have attached a preliminary report and a list of supplies that we will need. Some of them may be difficult to obtain without going through the Muggle government. We also need credentials which will satisfy the American Muggle War Department so that we can establish relations with them, although Dr Locke says that they have been uncooperative with the British programme of late.
Miss Popescu has sent me a letter that implied that she was hunting a demon there and now there are reports of deaths and fires. I cannot help but think that she is involved somehow, given the circumstances under which I became her guardian. I doubt that this is what you intended when you activated her commission, but can you tell me what is going on there?

Dear Polly,
No, I haven't blown anything up, I've just been terribly busy. War research, you know how it is, but I did have some fun Friday setting up a sweet new Difference Engine. It's given me some ideas for a project we've been working on.
From what I've heard it's you who needs to worry about things blowing up. Just what is going on up there? Even Philip and I never managed to burn down anything that big.
Speaking of Philip, he says he'd be delighted to come up and do a presentation. (Well, actually he just said it would be nice, but you know that's what he meant.)
