That's not a dog it's a Horse!
Who Cheyenne, Jeannie,(NPC) and Her new Familiar Zeus(NPC)
When mid-nighttime around 8 o'clock
WhereWalking home from babysitter's, by the park and Cheyenne's apartment
"Mommy? When awe we dowing to be home? My feet huwt and I'm tired." Jeannie said stumbling along on the city sidewalk. Cheyenne looked down and saw that Jeannie was rubbing her eyes and her curled head was starting to bob down as they got closer to home. It was times like this when Cheyenne wished she had a car. Unfortunately, cars were easy to trace and they were expensive. If she had been thinking properly, she would have let them take the bus or a cab. As it was, they were stuck plodding along the city streets, both of them too exhausted to even talk to the other.
It had been a long day for Cheyenne. Elmo had stopped coddling her and was now showing her the few complex dishes that Sunny's served. She had been up on her feet for the last 8 hours and was looking forward to a little rest and relaxation once she got Jeannie to bed. Apparently she was going to get her wish a little sooner than later.
By the time they were passing the park, the street lamps were on and the sunlight was starting to fade along the tree lines. Cheyenne was starting to zone out when suddenly Jeannie ripped her hand away from Cheyenne's and sprinted as fast as her little toddler legs carry her, over to a large huddled up shape on the sidewalk. Cheyenne ran after her and upon closer inspection, noticed that the mammoth ball of fur Jeannie had attached herself to was actually a dog. A stray dog.
"Jeannie honey, get away from that dog NOW. It could hurt you." Cheyenne said panicking, and praying that the giant thing was gentle and not viscous. It looked like it could swallow Jeannie whole. Cheyenne contemplated different ways to get the beast away from her daughter when suddenly the thing reared up so that it was sitting, gently so as not to knock Jeannie down, and stared Cheyenne in the eyes.
Calm yourself Cheyenne. I would never harm your young one. The dog said in a deep baritone voice.
"It talked!" Cheyenne said jumping to grab Jeannie, who hid behind the St. Bernard and refused to budge.
"He knows your name Mama." Jeannie commented gleefully as if she had taught the dog herself.
Indeed I do. I know everything there is to know about you Cheyenne. I am your Familiar.
"How can I have a familiar? I'm just a human! I thought only supernatural beings got those!" She said still slightly panicked. Though, she was calmed by the fact that Jeannie was clearly not in danger by this seemingly gentle animal. He was monitoring his movements so that he did not jostle the small girl who had climbed up on his shoulders. He was even tolerating the way she was roughly petting and nuzzling him.
Don't worry about the little one, she is not harming me, nor will I do anything to her. We are bonded, Just as you and I are bonded. You are a water elemental Cheyenne. He stated with unwaivering patience.
"I'M A WHAT????" She shouted, then glancing at the people who were starting to look her way she stepped aside a bit and repeated quietly "I'm a what?"
A water elemental,on your mother's side. Think about it Cheyenne. Remember all those years you spent by the lakes and the ocean. You knew how to swim the moment you hit the water, think about all those times you went skiing, you never once slipped or slid on he black diamond runs while others dropped around you like flies.
"Shit." Cheyenne said creating a 'oohh mommy...you said a bad word' from Jeannie and a laugh like bark from the dog.
I have a name...in case you are wondering. It's Zeus, I have traveled an awful long way to find you, and I am very tired. So, if you don't mind can we go home now?
"Sure" Cheyenne said flipping the switch into mom mode. She pried Jeannie away from Zeus's fur and carrying her down the road towards home.
"Tum on Zeus" Jeannie called over Cheyenne's shoulder, and that melted most of the suspicions Cheyenne had left about the dog. Children could sense good and bad, and were not shy about saying things about it.
Much later, after both Jeannie and Zeus(who was covered in weeks worth of grime from travel) had been given baths, Cheyenne finally started to unwind and think on everything that had happened. She must have fallen asleep because when she awoke, it was just past 11 at night. She immediately walked into Jeannie's room to find her daughter curled on the floor with her favorite teddy bear, using Zeus as a mattress and pillow. That sealed it for Cheyenne. Zeus was part of the family now.
Like you had a choice He rumbled, stretching himself out as Cheyenne tucked Jeannie in properly.
"Well, it's late and I'm going to bed. Do you want to stay in here?" She asked skeptically.
Can I come into bed with you?" He asked, his tail wagging furiously. Cheyenne laughed, nodded her head, and led the way to her room. He may be a sage like guide sent to help her, but Zeus was still just a great big fluff ball at heart. She even thought that she might just like him...maybe.
