The secretest code of mine
Who: Erika Forsythe and her familiar Petunia
Where: her place
When: early afternoon
Leaving the shop in capable hands, Erika and Petunia drove over to the Forsythe family home. While Erika had only planned to stick around long enough to deliver a few arrangements and pick up Evan’s mystery flowers, she’d been convinced into sticking around for lunch with her mother. More than an hour after she’d planned to be back, Erika finally walked into her apartment, Petunia in one arm and a vase in the other. She set Petunia down on the floor with a quick kiss to the top of her head on the way into the kitchen.
The first order of business was to change out the water in the vase, so Erika got a few paper towels and set them on the counter. Lifting the flowers out of the water, she set them carefully on the paper towels, then dumped the old water into the sink. A light scrubbing and several rinses later, Erika refilled the vase with water and put the flowers back in it, minus a few stray leaves. She carried the bouquet back into the living room, Petunia at her heels, and put it in the center of the coffee table. Erika already had flowers on her small kitchen table, and the coffee table would make a better backdrop for the pictures she wanted to take.
The picture from Evan’s cell phone was all well and good when all she wanted to do was identify the basics about the arrangement, but now that she was looking more deeply into the source of the flowers, she wanted a better photo. That meant her own cell phone was right out as a camera, and Erika left the living room to retrieve her digital camera from the store room. She’d used it there last to take pictures of some arrangements she’d done for future promotional purposes, as well as record-keeping.
It wasn’t strange that Petunia didn’t follow her downstairs; while the goat was an excellent climber - or should have been, at least - she tended to get overly excited and trip over her own hooves. Instead Petunia stayed up in the living room, staring intently at the bouquet as if there were something about the flowers that she could see that her person couldn’t. Having seen numerous customers put their faces right into the center of a bouquet and take a deep breath in order to smell it, Petunia decided to do just that, front legs up on the coffee table so she could get close enough. Having inhaled the delicious fragrance, Petunia then decided that her other senses would only allow her to enjoy it even more, so she started munching.
Erika walked back into the apartment at that exact moment, and nearly dropped her camera when she saw what her familiar was doing. "Damn it, Petunia! No!" The goat wasn’t exactly the brightest bulb in the shed, but she was well aware of when she was in trouble, and scrambled backwards quickly, only to end up sitting down on her backside with a small thump. Erika took a deep breath and then let it out with a loud sigh as she rushed over to the flowers to inspect the damage. Luckily, Petunia hadn’t gotten very far in her snack, so she’d still be able to take pictures from one side without any of the headless stems being visible.
I was just smelling them! Petunia protested, and Erika couldn’t be overly upset with her familiar sitting there, legs splayed awkwardly and big eyes blinking up at her. "It’s fine, Petunia. Just from now on, no eating the evidence, okay?"
Clearly they were going to have to watch some cop shows so Petunia could learn the basics.
