Taking this one to the grave
Who: Aurelia + NPCs
Where: Just outside of Ann Arbor
When: After sundown
Warning: A lamia's appetite
Her grandmother had spoiled her. Of that, Aurelia was well aware, now more than ever. The anticipation, being made to wait lest her actions forfeit her safety -- it was worth it. All of it. The shedding and vicious mood swings were cast from her mind, banished for another four months. She was content to continue the discomfort of others, but that would never change. Tonight, however, she was aiming for the bare minimum. The minimum, at least, until all involved woke the next morning. That thought alone sent shivers of amusement right through her. Raising the cat -- a scrawny, pathetic excuse for a feline -- by the scruff of its neck, she raised his head with one finger. Twin reflections stared back at her. Who do you think they will miss first, mm? Well, they had already noticed the cat was absent. She had just finished crushing its ribs when they pulled up the unnecessarily long drive. Of course, it was already dead -- she could still taste the fur hours after biting it -- it just needed a touch of authenticity before she abandoned it as roadkill. Let them think they did it themselves... Insult to injury. Strategically throwing the thing across the drive, she stood brazenly in the middle of it, staring up at the house.
She hadn't had this much fun since she was seventeen. God, I miss sleepovers.
It was a thing of beauty, really. Not a home she would have ever chosen for herself, since the style of architecture gave it a definite touch of 'goldfish bowl', but stunning nonetheless. And incredibly handy. Something she would never have discovered had the girl she now supposed to be a babysitter not had enough taste in shoes to take the time out of her day to bring the pushchair over while she remarked on Aurelia's chosen footwear. After that, the lamia had simply followed, watching the occupants through their glass walls. It fascinated her how not one of them had shown any signs of apprehension, even after dark. True, the location was fairly remote. They had no neighbours to concern themselves with, and once night fell and the lights were switched off, the windows showed them only their own reflections. Stood a few feet shy of where the lounge cast its light into the garden, Aurelia watched as the babysitter gathered her things, exchanging pleasantries with the apparent homeowners. This sort of setting -- where no one could see out but all could see in -- would have had the lamia pulling at her hair if were she in their place. But she wasn't. Instead she found herself removing her clothes and taking them back to her own car while she waited for those inside the house to retire for the night.
Her return saw the entirety of the ground floor empty. A little early for bed time in her opinion, but more fool them. Really, what interested her more was whether entering someone's property via the cat-flap counted as breaking and entering. Indeed, she couldn't even be accused of abduction since she had no intention of taking anyone off the premises. Found you. Past the parents who snored so loudly she could feel it through the floor and past the bathroom containing so many chemicals she would be smelling them for a week. Past one more door...
The baby monitor was the first thing to go, crushed between clawed hands much like their beloved pet had been. For a moment, Aurelia didn't -- couldn't -- move. Caught somewhere between caution and complete fixation, she stared at the sleeping infant in awe, all the while feeling for movement from elsewhere. None came. Not even as she reached into the crib, arms folding almost protectively around her tiny human being. Tongue flickering out against the child's forehead, vibrations of sheer delight ran through her. As wide blue eyes opened and struggled to focus on the vertical slits that stared back, she wrestled a thumb from the tiny fingers seeking to claim it. "No, sweetheart, you don't want to put that in your mouth," she crooned, "You'll do yourself a mischief." It was beautiful. One of life's little wonders. Soft, sweet, trusting... Gently running the back of her claws over its cheek, Aurelia sighed. She did not have the patience to play with this one as she had originally hoped. Jaw opening further, she gave the mesmerised child a flash of what was to come and cast her eyes over the crib of its twin. There was no reason she could not play with the second. She had all night.
