When: Sunday June 7th, 2009 11:00 am
Where: the Phoenix
Psalm wasn’t in the greatest mood, not that he ever really was. He had just been dealt the final blow in his punishment – no more days off over the summer. And that was just terrible. If Psalm wasn’t so used to Olivia using and abusing him for the sake of the business he might have been surprised by these turn of events. But basically, it was just a normal reaction on Olivia’s part. She knew that keeping him isolated could only work to her advantage. That when he had nothing else, he’d have a break down and tell her. But she had no idea how strong willed the boy was, nor did she realize his desire to do what was right over what was easy. Psalm had always been the one to sacrifice his own well being for others, even if they didn’t realize what he was doing. He had been up since 5, working since 5:30, emotionally drained, physically exhausted, and coffee deprived. He wasn’t the happiest Bell Hop that there ever was. This was the Phoenix not Disneyland! Instead of Mickey Mouse and giggling kids he had Olivia and angry spirits. Worse than all of this was the fact that Olivia was taking up a new hobby, talking about his mom. Psalm knew they knew each other, he knew his mother worked for her, and yet Olivia almost never brought up his mother unless she really wanted something. So now he had suspicious acting ghosts AND suspicious acting boss/care taker as well. Very strange indeed.
But now it was 11, which meant that Max would be walking through the back door at any moment, two glorious cups of Starbucks in his hands, and a grunt for a greeting. Mornings weren’t that bad when Max was working because they got each other, well at least enough to know that they didn’t chit-chat in the mornings. Psalm sat at the front counter, drumming his fingers on the counter top, waiting for Max to get there, a customer to need assistance or someone to kick him out of his spot. Sometimes the waiting involved in this job was the worst part – because he was constantly reminded that his life would forever be put on hold. He was stuck in a bad situation with Olivia, forced to work at a job he didn’t like and forever haunted by the fact that he could never be without the spirits. Life was rough but coffee made it just a little better.
However, instead of coming in through the back door, Max made his way in through the front, a big grin on his face and his usual grumpy attitude was completely gone. Psalm was obviously confused, but Max was oblivious as he handed Psalm his coffee. Psalm took a drink as Max sat down next to him. “There’s a hot girl coming in, saw her at Starbucks and she totally said she was applying here. Can you imagine that? I’m totally asking for her number when she comes in.” Psalm rolled his eyes. Good luck with that.
