Don't dream or close your eyes
Who: Angeline and Locke
Where: Starbucks
When: Noontime

It wasn't that Starbucks was Locke's ideal choice when it came to coffee stores, but more or less the fact it was starting to drizzle a bit outside and the phoenix had some pretty bad memories of rain. Being reborn in a rainstorm tended to do that. So the second he felt some rain drops plop onto his face, he bolted into the nearest store he could find and it just happened to be a Starbucks. Oh lovely... He far preferred brewing something of his own instead of paying for some overpriced, overly sweet crap that was here, but then again, he couldn't just sit in a corner waiting for the rain to die out without buying something. Well... maybe he could, but that angelic side to him just had to buy something out of politeness.

He stood in line for a while, taking a moment to text his parents to comment about how he would be home a little later than usual. Damn parents for worrying about him. Really, they didn't have any need to. He had more experience than both his parents put together, so why bother worrying about Locke? Nothing bad was going to happen at Starbucks... right? He dismissed the mildly paranoid thought and went on up to the counter to place an order for a cinnamon latte along with a cinnamon chip scone before standing off to the side and waited for his drink, munching on his delicious treat on and off.

After the last time with the rain storm and her classic convertible top not pulling, and how terrible she'd looked completely drenched, Angeline vowed to never be caught in the rain again. Unprepared, anyhow. So this time, as she drove through town and started to feel the first drops, Angeline parked - underground - and took the shortest route to the nearest coffee place, where she would sit, with Machiavelli's "The Prince" - an old favourite, a good large cup of coffee, and wait for the rain to stop.

Standing in line, the girl smoothed over her dress and assessed just how wet and frizzy her hair was - not much at all. She sighed and straightened her back, waiting for her turn just behind a young man who was, probably, around her age.

When the time came for her to order, Angeline spat out a string of words a mile a minute, all of which where things which should figure in her coffee:

"Hi, I'd like a Double Ristretto Venti Non-fat Organic Chocolate Brownie Frappuccino, Extra Hot with Foam and Whipped Cream Upside Down, Double Blended, please. Thank you!" She smiled at the barista, although her eyes had something of a challenging streak to them, as if she was sizing up the girl's competency in terms of having gotten her order right, and how long it took her, and if she had to have it repeated back to her. She moved onto the side, and waited, still smiling.

Holy. Fucking. Hell. Was that even in English? At least he married a European at some point in one of his lifetimes, so Locke at least comprehended the fact that yes, this young girl wasn't just pulling random shit out of thin air to concoct a drink. That and he was a barista himself and knew that some pretentious people like that who came in and wanted things to be chop-chop! But the poor barista that just stared at the girl looked like she just wet herself and was ready to curl up in a corner and die. Better her than me... Oh geez, now she's coming over here and- LOVELY. She's standing next to me. Because just what Locke needed was some prissy spoiled brat to rain even more on his parade... but at least she was cute...? In your dreams, man. You haven't been upperclass in close to 100 years. You're WAY out of her league.

And she was intimidating... sort of... but awww, she was so cute and sweet when she smiled and- NO. BAD.

So of course Locke smiled back at her while she stood next to him. She didn't look that familiar. Hmm... maybe a new transfer student to the high school? Not like Locke was BFFs with all the teenagers, but maybe this one was an exception. Wishful thinking, of course. At the very least, Locke was going to be a gentleman, simply because it was in his nature and he was a longshot from being any typical, modern teenager. "I think you should get a prize for spitting that all out in record time," he joked about her drink order. "At least you know what you want out of life, right?"

It took a good while for Angeline to notice or acknowledge anyone else was there too, but when she did, looking to her side and spotting what, on second take, looked like the cutest blond boy she'd ever seen smiling back at her. Angeline kept on smiling, even when he started talking to her, giggling slightly. "Yes, well, I suppose you could chalk that up to me being a New Yorker at heart." She confessed, shrugging, although it was a lot more about confusing the barista than anything else - because it amused her.

She nodded. "That, I do." She didn't have a list of objectives, but in broad terms, you bet she did know what she wanted out of life. Like this cute blond boy, who was beginning to become exactly that. She extended her hand. "I'm Angeline."

Someone had to be playing the biggest trick on him the world, because how the hell was this happening? AND she's a New Yorker!? Not like he had been to the city since the late 1920s, but he was born and raised there for a majority of his overall life. Part of him was happy to be talking with another New Yorker. "I haven't been there in years. It's a lovely city." If you were living it up, that was. Locke had experienced both sides of that and still enjoyed the place. That and he was certain it was far different than the last time he was there.

Upon seeing her hand, Locke immediately slipped his hand into hers and shook it politely. It didn't matter what lifetime he was in, he was always going to be an old soul and thus be a gentleman. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Angeline. I'm Locke," he replied with a smile, letting her name echo in his head. Gah, even her name sounds pretty. "So, what brings you out to Scarlet Oak? A bit far away from the big apple." If he had it his way, he would have stayed in a city of some sort, but luck just happened to drop him in this town and there was no chance of him escaping it for quite a while.

Angeline was not the type to get nostalgic about things past, much less considering she was only seventeen; but New York was New York, and when Locke talked about it being lovely a deep sigh escaped her. "Yeah. I miss it dearly." She confessed, dropping her gaze down momentarily before looking back up at him and smiling. "Don't mind me, I got a little nostalgic there."

"Locke, it's a pleasure as well!" She liked the name. Old fashioned sounding, but quite lovely. At this moment Angeline looked from Locke to see what the barista was up to, though she expected her to take a little while with both their orders. Good thing she had found someone to keep her busy. "Yes, I moved here not too long ago. Not my decision, obviously, but one does the best one can." She shrugged. "What about you? Are you a local, or a transplant like me?" She asked, pretending to be a ton more interested than she actually was.

He actually didn't entirely blame Angeline for not wanting to move here. Out of all the places he lived throughout his lifetimes, this one was by far the quietest and tamest... so far, at least. With the Light of May, who knew what was going to happen next. It definitely drew attention to the town.

Ah, and the age old question about where he was from. Locke didn't like lying, but he had to. Trying to be truthful in that matter always got messy and he preferred going the made-up route. "Actually, I'm from Detroit, but uh..." He paused for a second, not wanting to get into the details of his family being murdered, because white lie or not, that was the truth. Burned alive was not a good way to go, nor did Locke want to recall it. "My folks aren't with me anymore, but I have a new family here. Been around since I was 11 or so. I'm 16 now, will be 17 soon...ish." Wow, 17 already? He would say time flew by, but that was a laugh and a half coming from Locke. "So yeah! Transplant. Probably come off as a local, seeing I've been here for a while, but honestly? I'd rather be in some big city. I feel more at home there. So much to do. You must be bored to tears here." He meant it as a joke, adding a smile just to be sure... but who knew, maybe she was.

Making a face, Angeline turned her head just in time to at least attempt to hide it from Locke. "Ah. Detroit." Horrible city, as far as she had heard, and what she had heard had been enough not to want to know anything else about it, ever. She did turn her head when Locke mentioned his parents 'weren't with him anymore'. "Oh. I'm really sorry about your parents." It was an appropriate response. She cracked an immediate smile as he revealed his age, and added casually, "Aww. I'm 17 myself."

So he was a bit of a local. He had lived here long enough to be considered such, as far as Angeline was concerned. "So have you ever been to New York, or are you one of those people who love the city they imagine New York to be?" She teased, but her smile wasn't menacing. At least not yet.

Mentioning how she must be bored made Angeline actually sigh, propping her elbow on the counter and holding her chin with her fist. "I am. But one finds ways to counter boredom." She said, cracking a mischievous smile, and adding a wink for good measure.

Finally, the barista placed her drink in front of her. "Oh. Thank you." Finally, she thought as she took the money out of her purse to pay for it. "I think I'm sitting down for this, do you want to join me?" She asked Locke when she was finally holding her drink.

"Oh no, I've been there," Locke immediately replied with a nod, actually blushing a bit at the way she teased him. He at least knew what Angeline was talking about in that respect. Then again, she sounded like she had been there more recently than he had. Last time was right when the stock market crashed. Pff, like he was going to tell her that. No tells for the strangers, thank you very much. "Lovely city. Great architecture and entertainment. Wish I could go back."

Locke raised an eyebrow slightly upon hearing she was bored. Hmm, kindred souls in that regards. Some people in his classes thought Scarlet Oak was amazing, rather enjoying the small lifestyle, but Locke always wanted more than just- did she just wink at him?!?!?!!? Wow, if he wasn't blushing before, he was now. And holy crap, now she was asking him to join him. When was the last time a girl ever teased him like that? Last lifetime? Wow, yeah, been a while. Most of the girls in his class didn't even want to think about the nerdy blonde in that respect. And here was this angel, more or less, gracing him with her presence.

"...of course! That sounds great." Seriously now, he was a teen boy and his balls just dropped. Why was he going to say no? Spotting his own drink, Locke grabbed it and nodded to Angeline before making his way on over to a nearby table, even doing his best to be a gentleman and pulled a chair on out for her before sitting opposite of Angeline. "So," he took another bite of his scone, munched, then swallowed. "Also 17? You going to be attending high school here or going into college?"

"Oh!" She smiled, with a look of approval on her face. "Yes, all true. I am planning on going back, just for a nice vacation, but I am not sure my parents would let me go alone." Which was true, and odd. Co-running a whore house? Absolutely no problem. Travelling to New York City alone? Not so fast, missy. Parents. "Maybe when I go you should come with me." She wasn't serious, mostly, but it sounded like a nice thing to say.

Noticing Locke's blushing, it was with a playful smirk that Angeline made her way to the table. "Thank you!" A gentleman, too. How rare these days. She waited for him to eat before he continued, and then nodded. "I'm going to be a senior at Scarlet Oak High School. I assume you are too?"

...did she just... invite him to go with? It was hard to tell if she was joking or being serious, mostly due to her overall sweet demeanor. Locke just blinked for a second, then let out a semi-nervous chuckle. "Well, if I can squeeze it in between my classes and study sessions, then why not." Yeah, he wasn't so sure about the whole thing, regardless of how much he wanted to see the city again. At least he had his academics as an excuse. Was always the excuse these days.

"Mmhmm. I'm your class treasurer, too. Should be a good year ahead of us!" Though in all honesty, Locke had very little to be excited about. Everyone was getting ready for college and exams and so on and Locke didn't give a crap. He'd have to pick a college eventually just to appease his parents and teachers. The thought of having something worth living for by then would be nice, but who knew. "And if you ever need a tour of the place or something, I can help out. Well, not like it's a huge place, but you know. At the very least, I can help out with tutoring."

Chuckling lightly, Angeline gave Locke a playful push across the table. "There are always school breaks, silly!" She shook her head and looked at him again, smiling. "Don't you worry your pretty head, though. I wasn't actually trying to force an otherwise complete stranger into taking a first-class plane ride to New York with me."

She crossed her arms, straightening up. "I hope so. I'm not exactly expecting something amazing, but I hope it's a good year." She smiled again. The adjustment to a new school, where she would have to work on having the same pull she had had at her old one, would be staggering. Especially since Angeline was sure these small town types weren't very open to new people. Then again, they were coping well with much bigger changes...Maybe she would be fine. Maybe she could still 'rise to the top' by acting like she already was there. That usually worked. "I would love a tour, absolutely." She nodded. "Oh? Are you a very good student, then?" She didn't exactly need tutoring, given she tended to excel effortlessly at most anything, but a good tutor might be a good thing to have in the sidelines.

Oh that's where his hormones were. Good to know they were still intact, even after all these rebirths, because Locke was blushing like this was the first time a girl ever called him pretty. To be honest, he wasn't sure what Angeline said after that, seeing he was too busy repeating that phrase in his head and mentally sighing some dreamy sigh. Whoever created phoenixes did this as a joke, I swear. Who the hell picked teen years to be reborn at? Seriously...

Finally snapping back to reality, Locke fluttered his eyes a bit and tried to rewind all of she said. Pay attention, bird brain. Wow. "Well, I'll definitely try to make it amazing. Some of the other kids don't really care when it comes to fundraising, but the more money we get, the better we are financially, right? Prom and homecoming will be here before you know it." And they totally needed money for that and there was only so many cookies they could whore out. Locke chuckled a bit and looked away shyly, "I don't want to brag or anything, but I'm one of the top students, so... I guess? I'm a bit of a nerd, you'll have to forgive me." Cute nerd, right? Those could exist. Hell, it wasn't like Locke was a virgin. There was hope!

Being a were-bird very keen on her senses, Angeline noticed a slight change in Locke's behavior that made her observe him more closely. He seemed flustered. It was amusing, though Angeline did not laugh, merely smiled only very slightly. "I'm sure you will have no problem in making it amazing." She said with a hint of a suggestive tone. For all the unconventional things she was, Angeline sure behaved like a hormonal teenager more often than she would like. Then again, she could do so with class, which was commendable.

"Oh, I am sure my parents will make a hefty contribution towards prom and homecoming. They can't have me going to some terrible party filled with fake glittery things and a bad DJ..." She commented with a smile. "Then again I'll have to plead them a very good case for them to sway my way so easily." Not that they cared, they had enough money not to care, but Locke seemed to find this important and it was good to have a bit of leverage.

Angeline smiled, satisfied, and straightened up against her chair. "Good, because I don't make a habit of hanging out with unintelligent people." She revealed, angelic smile in place as it always was. But it was true; stupidity and ignorance made her want to go on a killing spree, and she couldn't quite do that, could she?

Her parents would make a hefty contribution? For a second, Locke was willing to ask just what exactly her parents did for a living that would entitle her to use something like 'hefty,' but then he reminded himself that not only was that rude, but this was the girl who came from New York. Anything went there. He also came from money in his first lifetime and his parents did the same thing. Funny how that trick still work two hundred years later. "That would be awesome!" Locke beamed, then took a bit at his food, munched away for a second, then continued. "And if you need help persuading, I can definitely be of help. Wouldn't be the first time I've done that."

The comment about not hanging out with stupid people though made Locke laugh. Slightly nervous, but a laugh nonetheless. "Good to know. I'm really glad to have bumped into you after all, Angeline. Should hang out more often before school starts back up. That is, if you don't mind." Locke sure as hell didn't. Besides, he knew everyone would be gawking at the pretty new girl from NYC, and if Locke already had connections with her? He'd be hot shit for a long time. Not that he care, but it save him from some bullying during breaks.

Slowly, Angeline lowered her head, if only a little bit. She smiled knowingly at Locke. "Maybe they're not the only ones who need persuading..." She thought to wink, but decided against it, sticking to taking a sip of her drink instead. Then, she giggled, as though to throw him off and leave him wondering if she'd been serious. Angeline was pleased to hear him say he had liked to have bumped into her, and nodded as his suggestion that they hang out more before school started again. "I don't mind at all, people that interest me are hard to find in this place!" She confessed.

"Which reminds me," She continued. "Do you know of anything fun to do with a new friend around these parts? I'm almost always alone, and I don't get out much." Not in human form, anyway.

Even after all the lifetimes Locke had lived through, he still managed to be reborn back into his teenage years a bit off kilter. Something about the fresh minds of the younger ones that always had him rethinking, and in Angeline's case, making him blink and blush lightly and giggling along with her. Well, he wasn't exactly sure why he was giggling, but why not? She looked so cute when she did it.

"Oh, there's a bunch to do, depends on what you like." Locke nodded his head, finishing off his food and brushed his hands clean of any crumbs. "A couple of the cafes here have some open mic nights with local acts. I actually work at one that has a few now and then. Not often, but they're there. I think there's a performing arts theatre in the area that has a bunch of acts, like fire dancers and knife throwers. All local, too. It's amazing. And if the weather gets better, the park is a great place to hang out at." He rolled his eyes slightly. "Everyone goes there, though. Nothing novel about that. I know I would love to hit up a concert or two before the break ends, even if it's something small and local."

Well, he was giggling. That made Angeline laugh inwardly, though her face did not register anything beyond the same smile she had given Locke before. She found she liked him, or something about him, and wasn't sure what. He seemed... birdlike, somehow. If anything, it might be worth keeping him around to find out if Angeline was right.

"Oh, where is it that you work? So I can come visit." She smiled pleasantly as though she was sure a visit from her at would surely brighten up his work hours. Which she obviously was. "Knife throwers and fire dancers? Sounds interesting." Marginally, but she would take what she could get. Safe for a few events here and there Angeline had found herself to be woefully bored since moving to Scarlet Oak. "Oh, the park." She nodded, unenthusiastically. Angeline had seen a lot of that place, and it had seen too much of her as well.

Sitting up again, more enthusiastically, Angeline put on another cute smile and bit her lip as if she was feeling too shy to say something. "Well... Maybe you could, I don't know, take me to a concert, show me what's good musically around here?" She seemed to have the "shy but lovable" thing down pat, years and years of practice behind her. Even if most of them did not have the flirtatious bit attached to it, but that hadn't been hard to incorporate when the time came.

"I'm a barista over a Lenore's Bookstore and Cafe," he replied, shrugging a bit. "Nothing special. Just a summer job, you know? Makes the rents quiet and gives me some extra cash to do my own thing." Locke knew he would have gone nuts if he was stuck in the house all day with them pestering him nonstop. Part of him couldn't wait until school started strictly so he had something to do. "You're more than welcomed to visit me. Would brighten my day." Cute girls were good like that.

And Angeline's offer of him taking her out to a concert of some sort to him for shock - a good one. Blinking his eyes, Locke couldn't help but chuckle, tilting his head to the side. Wow, this girl definitely knew how to talk her way into getting what she wanted. No wonder she said she wouldn't have any issues talking to her parents about money. Well, it wasn't like Locke was going to say no to a pretty face like that. His dick would have to be falling off to say no to that. "I think I'd love to," Locke nodded with a smile. "Next time there's something big going on, I'll call you up or something, ok? Here, let me..." Locke patted his pockets, searching for his cellpone briskly, then flipped it out and handed it to Angeline. "If you want to be so kind and give me your number, I'll keep in touch with you. Make sure you have a great time."

An air of recognition flew across Angeline's face at the name. She nodded, smiling. "I've been there once or twice. Now I'll definitely go there more often." She smiled, feigning embarrassment when he admitted that seeing her at his place of work would brighten up his day.

When Locke chuckled, Angeline's expression fell momentarily, thinking he would have the gall to refuse to date her; but her worry was for naught, seeing as he seemed to like the idea very much. Angeline smiled again, nodding. She took his phone and saved her digits on it. "There you go, call me any time, if I don't answer just leave a message." She said sweetly. However, she saw no need in getting his number. She wasn't going to call him, at least not yet. Not before he called her to ask her out.

Score one for Locke! Mentally, he was flailing about, happy over his victory. There was always that sense of excitement when finding dating material in each lifetime. Locke wasn't sure how long it would last or how often he would be seeing her, but it actually perked up the phoenix. Maybe this was the kind of boost he needed to get out his rut, even if it was temporarily. Bunny wasn't going to believe this either when he'd tell her later.

"Perfect," Locke smiled in Angeline's direction, taking his phone back to glance at the digits. Not only did he have a regular customer in his future, but he also had a date. Good to know the summer wasn't so dull after all. Stashing his phone away, he peeked out the window, catching sight of the rain lightening up and perked up. "Ah, looks like the rain's giving up." That said, he stood up from his seat and grabbed his latte and nodded to Angeline with a sweet smile. "Angeline, it was a pleasure meeting you, my dear. I look forward seeing you again. You take care and stay dry." And with that, he gave her a little wave and headed on off, an extra bounce in his steps.
