major freakout
Who: Ari and Alanna
Where: Ari's house
When: 7:30am
Ari woke up totally unable to sleep anymore... she was so incredibly nervous for her "date" with Ian tonight. She had to do some massive cooking today but she couldn't even focus on that right now. Needing a friend, Ari picked up her phone and texted Alanna.
7:41am
I know it's early and I'm really really sorry, but I'm FREAKING OUT about tonight. Can you come over? Pleeeeease?
Pulling herself out of bed, she went to wash her face and brush her teeth. She decided to take a shower after her marathon cooking session since she would likely get nasty from all that. So, she pulled on a robe and sat at her piano to wait for a text back from Alanna to see if she was going to come over.
Alanna liked to get up early for her jogs. Especially when the full moon started to get closer because she seemed filled with an anxiety that never went away. Knowing what was coming and all. So she was awake early Saturday, already out jogging, when she felt her cell buzzing. Jogging in place she reached into her pocket and flipped it open. Oh. Ari. Ari and her date thing.
7:49am
Please, not early to a runner, gotta get my time in. But I'll cut short and run on over. Where do you live again?
And, because standing in place got boring after awhile, Alanna kept going. Though she did change her path to head more back towards the living areas of Scarlet Oak so it would not take her as long to locate her friend-in-need.
Ari stopped playing when her phone rang, signaling a text message and grinned when she saw that Alanna was coming over. And score! She wasn't mad at the whole early morning thing. Ari texted her back her address and went into the kitchen to start a pot of coffee. At least she could have some breakfast ready, although she didn't have much in the way of food. Pulling down her cereal boxes, she sniffed at her milk to make sure it was still good and yay, it was. She put it back in the fridge and went back to the piano to wait for Alanna.
Opening her cell to see the address, Alanna figured out the best way to get there and took off. Running on pavement was definitely not the redhead's favorite way to go but hey, at least she could still get almost all of her run in. Her breathing was a little heavy when she reached the address she had been given, taking the time to run through a quick cooldown. Rearranging her hair so that at least the fly-aways were tamed, Alanna went up and knocked on the door. Hopefully Ariana would not mind the fact that she was in her jogging outfit and a little sweaty. It was definitely not a cool morning.
Hearing the knock at the door, Ari broke off from her playing and went skipping to the door, flinging it open. "OH MY GOD, YOU'RE HERE!" She ushered Alanna inside, taking note of her jogging attire and the fact that she was sweaty. "I have coffee ready, but you look like you could use water instead though." She led Alanna into the kitchen, grabbing her a cold bottle of water and handing it to her. "I have cereal if you're hungry." Unable to stay still, Ari paced the length of the kitchen, wringing her hands together in nervousness.
Alanna was sure that the only thing that kept Ariana from jumping her was the fact that she would have been flooded with images. Because that greeting was on par with something she expected out of Roxy and it nearly had her bolting the other way. She had actually started to turn away when Ariana ushered her inside. "Water'd be great thanks," Alanna agreed, taking the bottle and unscrewing the cap before taking a long gulp. "And no thanks, I'm not really hungry right now. Prefer not to eat until a bit after a run. Sooooo... come on, you're nervous, start talking." She sunk into a nearby chair, bottle still in hand, watching Ariana as she paced.
Immediately seeing Alanna shrink back, Ari winced sheepishly, "Sorry about that." Back in the kitchen, she continued her pacing. "Okay, so the story with Ian and me is this: We met on the internet like four years ago. We talked for two years and kinda fell for each other. He was going to move here so we could be together. Had a plane ticket and everything. I went to the airport and he never showed up. I waited and waited and waited. I called, I emailed everyday for a year... heard nothing from him. It was as if he disappeared." She swung back around to Alanna, her eyes wide. "And then a few days ago? I see him at a take out place. He pretended to not know me. I saw him again at Heme, the vampire bar? Yeah, same situation. It was horrible. But come to find out, he was in an accident and has amnesia going back for the last 4 years... so he has absolutely no memory of me what-so-ever." That would be her luck, right? Find a great guy and he has an accident and amnesia and doesn't remember her. Fantastic. "So I looked him up online and started chatting with him. Then my stupid ass asked him to meet me to see fireworks. This is so gonna be bad...sooooo gonna be bad and I'm so terrified, Alanna." Ari cared so much for Ian and wanted things to work out so badly.
Wait. Alanna took a long drink and listened, mostly, but her mind had drifted off a little. Ian... did she mean the same Ian that lived in her apartment complex? No way that was not possible because things like that just did not happen. People did not randomly run into other people who knew the same ones they did. Right? People also don't turn into chipmunks on the full moon, right? Ah. "Okay, so... I don't know? Ari, I'm really not good with relationships because I don't really, well, do them!" Alanna gave a slight shrug. Yes there was Aaron and she was a little nervous about their date because it was the third one and she had always heard things about the third date... but that did not make her an expert or anything even approaching it. "But hey, side-tracking a minute here. This Ian you know, he sort of skinny with dark hair and a Scottish accent? Because I ran into one of those the other day, lives on the same floor as me."
"I don't really expect answers here...just need someone to talk to," Ari mumbled. She knew Alanna didn't do relationships because she was in the same boat. Having a relationship with someone you couldn't touch was awkward to say the least. It just didn't work at all and that's part of what was freaking Ari out.
Alanna's next question took her by surprise. "Well yes, he has a Scottish accent and is skinny with dark hair. That's Ian. Where'd you run into him?" Huh, small world.
Alanna chose not to respond to the bit about answers and talking. If Ariana wanted to talk she could, Alanna just wanted to make sure that she did not expect advice. Now that that was taken care of she could listen all day. "I ran into him at Best Buy when I was taking my iPod back because of the whole ghost thing. He was kind of staring because I guess I was talking loud." People did tend to stare about things like ghosts, she supposed. "And I tend to just talk... then he was having trouble getting this speaker up the stairs so I took it for him. Like I said, guy lives right down the hall from me."
Wow, so Alanna knew where Ian lived. Ian lived on her floor...How cool was that. "Wow. That's really coincidental. And yes, I'm sure anyone would stare when you talk about your iPod ghost. Because really? Doesn't happen to just everyone. Only you, really." How Alanna managed to find herself in these predicaments, Ari would never know, but it made her fun to be around.
"So yeah, you've seen him. Isn't he cuuute?" Yeah so Ari was a little smitten. Okay, very smitten. She'd always thought that Ian was just gorgeous with those piercing blue eyes and his dark brown hair. It sent shivers down her spine just thinking of him.
Alanna was sure that maybe ghosts happened to a lot more people than just her. Like mediums. Mediums had to do all sort of weird things with ghosts that would make her iPod possession look normal. "Mediums," Alanna pointed out, fiddling with her water bottle. "Happens to them all the time I bet." Some points just had to be made.
Cute? "Umm... I didn't really look." She had been helping him and he was a neighbor and those things did not always lead to her looking to she what he looked like past basic appearances. Though Ariana clearly thought he was, even had that tone in her voice that girls got when they were mooning over someone. Oh Alanna hoped that never happened to her. "I guess so, maybe? I mean you like him so duh you think he's cute. Isn't that a requirement?"
Ari stopped her pacing and giggled. "Yes, but they are mediums... you? Not so much." She was just teasing her friend, nothing to get upset over. Alanna just had some of the strangest things happen to her and Ari had to kid her about it at least a little bit. It was a rule or something.
Continuing her pacing, Ari answered, "Well, not a requirement really, but definitely helpful. Oh my God, I'm going to have a picnic with him later tonight! Just the tow of us. And then he's going to know I'm me, and that will possibly not be any good at all. Shit shit shit!" Ari pounded her fists on the counter as she passed by them while she paced.
"Could have been!" Totally not, but Alanna was trying. She had to at least give it a shot to defend herself. And happen to fail miserably at it. Yet there was Ariana, still pacing away. Was that girl ever going to settle down? Alanna would have thought that she was the chipmunk acting like that. "Ummm... question." Alanna even raised her hand up like she was in class and motioned with her water bottle. "Isn't him knowing who you are a good thing? Because last time I checked we're not supposed to go around dating people with masks on or anything. Right? Because if I'm wrong on that then what you said actually made sense but otherwise it totally didn't."
No, Ari wasn't going to be settling down anytime soon. She was too keyed up and nervous for her date with Ian. "See, the thing is," Ari took a deep breath before stopping to look at Alanna. "He kind of thinks I'm a psycho. I saw him twice and freaked out on him both times because he didn't recognize me and claimed he'd never heard of anyone named Ari or Ariana. Which I knew was bullshit because we talked for over two years!" Just talking about it made her frustrated again and she raked her fingers through her hair, tearing her pony tail down in the process. "Only, I didn't know that he couldn't remember me. I thought he was being mean, acting like he didn't remember me or something. So yeah, I reacted badly and he thinks I'm psycho." She retied her hair in a pony tail as she resumed her pacing. "Except online - I'm perfectly nice online and that is who he agreed to go out with - not crazy Ari. Except they're the same person and that's why I'm afraid he's going to freak."
Alanna listened and started to wonder if maybe she really did attract all sorts of crazy things. Ghosts, demons, vampires... Ariana... yes, Ariana was getting classified in that category for a very good reason - that little story she had just told. "Well I'd be afraid of you," Alanna said honestly, nodding her head. "Because Ari, no lie, that whole thing sounds just a teensy bit... you know, crazy and will make you look like a stalker. So that should be fun, you're going to have to let me know how it goes." Alanna smiled brightly. "Provided you don't have a panic attack first."
Ari stopped her pacing and whipped around to face Alanna, glaring at her slightly. "Well thanks for the support. Geez!" She resumed her pacing, the pace faster than ever now thanks in part to Alanna's unhelpfulness. "It's not crazy! I'm not crazy! He's Ian don't you see? Once I found out about his head injury and memory loss, I had to look him up. I couldn't let him slip out of my life again! The first time nearly killed me...I couldn't do it again. If he rejects me and says no at this picnic, I'll back off. You'll have to come bury me, but I'll back off." She shot Alanna an unhappy look. "I'm not a damn stalker," she muttered under her breath as she paced.
"Don't get all huffy about it," Alanna remarked. "I'm just saying what I think and sure... I think it'd be great if you're all happy and stuff but I'm just saying. I'd love to be wrong!" Truthfully too. Because who did not want to get a little fairy tale ending? "There's just that whole part you have to think about... you know what I mean. Touching." It was still a worry for her and she did not even have the ability anymore. Ariana did full blast.
And that reminder brought Ariana's pacing to a halt once again. She hung her head and spoke softly. "I know. I've been dreading having that conversation with him. Who wants a possible girlfriend they can't touch and who can't touch them? It's impossible!" She just wanted to be a regular, normal girl. But this wasn't a new wish and really, it wasn't going to happen. Taking a deep breath, she turned back to Alanna feeling defeated, but much less nervous. If he was going to reject her anyway because of the no touching thing, then she shouldn't be nervous over if he was going to reject her just because of who she was. "Thanks, I think, for calming me down. I appreciate you coming to my rescue."
See? That right there was another reason why hoping for a fairy tale ending was just crazy. Alanna knew how Ariana felt and it was a crazy feeling. "I don't know about impossible," she remarked, finishing her water and screwing the cap back on. "Just hard. I mean, Aaron likes me for whatever reason and it's not because I'm all over him. So that whole thing about all guys being after sex must be untrue." Or he was doing a really good job of hiding it. Huh. "If he does decide to like you for you - outside of the whole stalker thing - then hopefully it won't matter and you're totally welcome. You should take up running, helps the nerves." That was why she did it.
Ari gave Alanna a warm smile. "I'm glad you found a good guy, Alanna...you totally deserve it." She was equally as glad that Aaron was so patient with Alanna. She should send the boy a fruit basket or something. Anyone who was that good to her friend deserved a fruit basket. It was like a law or something. "I might have to try the running thing," Ari chuckled. She was feeling a bit better, actually. "Thank you again...I'd have been dead from a panic attack had you not come to my rescue."
"Oh, right." Alanna was not sure if 'deserved' was the right term but she did not feel like arguing the point. Especially not with Ariana since she was hoping for something happy and who was she to drag her down? More, that was. "And it's not a problem! Anytime when I'm not being sucked into work and such I'm glad to help. That's what friends are for and all." And it would suck to have a friend die of panic attack. She was going to have to ask Roxy if that was even possible.
