Wake up, wake up
Who: Charlene and Roxy, NPC hospital staff
When: Late morning
Where: UoM Hospital
"She's a mermaid! She's rashing like that because she's been out of the water too long; don't you know-"
"Well what do you want me to do about it, throw her back in the river? We just finished surgery she's got to have time to heal!"
"I don't know, fill something up with water and stick her there. No good in fixing her if she's just going to dry up and die."
"Can that happen?"
"Probably. Don't really want to risk it, do you?" The voices drifted to Charlene as she rose up out of the thick sleep that she had fallen into, eyes fluttering open just a crack to see a room that was far too white and masked faces that caused her throat to clench. But almost the moment they opened the voices changed and the heaviness that had lulled her off in the first place was back and she slipped back into the darkness while the voices she did not know discussed what to do with her.
A beeping sound seemed to echo off the inside of Charlene's head, refusing to allow her to stay in that too-deep sleep any longer. For a moment she thought that maybe she was hearing the sound of dolphins chasing their next meal, but no, the water around her was too warm and still for that. Wasn't I in a human place? The thought took awhile to form, but once it did Charlene's eyes flew open, looking up through perhaps a few inches of water to an alien sort of surrounding. Everything was white and there were machines, tubes of liquid trailing out of one and down, down into... her arm. Charlene eyed the place where the tube entered her skin with a bit of fascination, reaching to touch it only to find that she could not move her hands. They were bound by some thick material to the side of whatever she was in. She did not like that and even worse, her tail was bound as well. Strain as she might, little bits of water sloshing over the edge and onto the floor, the only thing that moved was her upper body.
Muttering merfolk curses against human contraptions, Charlene let her head break the surface of the water, instantly regretting the decision for the smells that struck her. They were sharp and unpleasant... and something pulled oddly on her torso, a muted pain that had been so much more the last time she had known. Glancing back down she saw a thick bandage wrapped around her ribs where that strange cut had been. She frowned, memories flitting in and out half-remembered. Had Roxy been there? For some reason, she remembered the pink-haired woman telling her that everything was going to be okay and attaching her to things inside a moving cave... now, why she had been there and where she had gone, Charlene had no clue.
Finally, Charlene took her eyes away from the things connecting to her and glanced around the room, stopping when she saw that right next to whatever she was in was Roxy. Her eyes lit up and she let out a happy chirrup, wincing as she tried to pull her arm up before remembering she could not do that. "Thought that I remembered you being there," she said slowly, her throat feeling a little odd, as though she had been out of the water for a long time, the words as strange on her tongue as always.
