Just what I need:
Who: Charlene and Freddie
Where: The lake
When: Afternoon
It was quite simple. Or at least that was what Charlene was trying to tell herself as she once again forced herself to shed her legs, gills and claws for the simpler, weaker form that could walk on land, breathe air and mingle with the multitudes who actually made up the majority in this place. She had been away from her pod, from large quantities of merfolk in general, for decades now but it was still a hard pill for her to swallow to realize that she really was the minority. And the lesser should still know better than to think they are better.
Sighing, it felt so odd to be like this again, Charlene pushed herself up out of the water, studying the bottom half of her body with something that could only be called disdain. It may not have been difficult to walk on legs anymore, but that did not mean she had to like it anymore than the clothes she was about to put on. A simple blue dress with white trimming worked well, but she only picked up the shoes that would match the outfit before recovering the chest and walking off.
Ridiculous, she told herself as the springy grass slipped between her feet as she headed towards the nearest road. It was a decent walk, but she did not want to change so close to where the humans and other supernaturals lived. Being seen was something she was going to avoid until it proved profitable. Or extremely troublesome. A smile curved her lips at the thought of trouble. Maybe she could cause some today...
Like many times before there was too much going on on dry land for Freddie's taste, and the only remedy to that would be the lake. The lovely lake, that wasn't frozen because it was summer, and which had never failed her before. With the recent events, the upcoming events, and people seemingly going apeshit around her, Freddie really could use the calm familiarity of the lake water. She parked her car nearby and hopped off, cell phone in hand as she was texting and checking the web all the while. Apparently even she could not cut herself off from reality entirely anymore.
She placed her large tote bag secured on her shoulder as she walked toward the lake, on the way to her favorite spot to put her stuff - which really amounted only to her towel and the clothes she would be discarding. With her head lowered as she kept looking at her phone, Freddie did not even notice the young woman walking straight by her, which caused for the teenager to bang her shoulder against some part of the other woman's body. Freddie stopped and turned around. "So sorry! You okay?" In case she had just elbowed the woman in the spleen or something.
As always, Charlene was sharp on the lookout for anyone who might be in the area - anyone who might have seen her change and therefore needed to be dealt with before they could run and spread the news that there was a mermaid wandering among them. That would happen when she was ready, and only then.
She had gone near the lake, and turned away from it, when she noticed her first person. As always her eyes narrowed slightly and her hands tried to clench into fists. There was always the possibility, quite a large one, that this girl she was seeing would be nothing more than a normal human. Or worse - a telepath who would know what she was as soon as she touched her thoughts. At least a human would be easier to eat... if I were hungry. Which she was not, one of the reasons why she had decided to leave the water now instead of later after her last meal wore off.
Worst of all, this girl actually walked right into her, attention absorbed by one of those cellphones that everyone seemed so attached to. It was not painful, more bothersome, and Charlene tilted her head a little to one side before giving it a shake to indicate no. It was such a tell for anyone who knew of the merfolk, her inability to speak. Though really, in the past she had managed to pass herself off as a simple mute. She could have reached for the small notebook and pen that she kept in the small leather bag hanging off one shoulder, but instead she waited, dark eyes wide as she stared at this unknown female with no emotion showing on her face; waiting. Looks like she's not telepath, thankfully.
Things weren't going well in Internet-world for Freddie, and it made her feel thankful that she was actually about to go swimming right now. Otherwise, she would be on her way right now anyway. She offered a smile to the young woman she had bumped into, glad it seemed as though she was alright and not really that angry. "Okay. I'm sorry, again." Sighing deeply Freddie turned around to walk a few more steps to her favorite spot, where she dropped her bag and her cell phone on top of it. Freddie stared out at the lake for a moment before starting to remove her clothes, revealing her usual bikini. And in another minute she was diving into the lake, instantly relaxing as her skin came into contact with the water. Freddie stayed under it for as long as she could, and when she emerged she began floating with her eyes closed, completely careless of where the water might lead her. She'd find her way back to the shore anyway, always did.
It was a common occurrence for Charlene to find herself shocked by the behavior of people who lived on land, but very rare for it to happen when she expected some sort of a reply. If she had engaged someone even somewhat directly then they would show some sort of an interest in her. But this odd, redheaded girl just smiled, apologized again and continued on her way. Despite herself, Charlene turned and watched as the completely absorbed girl stripped down to what humans called a bathing suit and dove into the water. The mergirl sighed just at the image of someone else in water, her natural habitat, though a strange laugh forced its way out when she saw how the girl swam. It was so much like a human, and yet... it seemed like this girl took to the water better than most. Not as good as a merfolk, of course, but better than expected.
I wonder... always curious, and knowing full well that she might intend on causing this girl mischief - Charlene walked back towards the water, sighing as the coolness of the water washed over her feet. She could have continued, swimming out to the girl to see if she could cause some sort of disturbance, but that would give her away a little too much for her taste at the moment. Instead she looked around for something... ah, yes, there was a rock that would do the trick quite nicely. Bending, Charlene scooped the rock up before lobbing it at the water beside the girl, hoping to create a splash of water that would catch her attention. She did not actually want to hit her.
Freddie had noticed she looked interesting, she just didn't have it in her to get to know anyone at the moment. She just wanted some peace and quiet, away from the very typical teenage troubles others were having around her that she could not fix. Or help fix, she didn't think. When she felt something hit the water beside her Freddie had the obvious reaction of diving into the water again, only to resurface in less than a second, rubbing the water off her eyes. Seeing the girl from before and, of course, the fish tail that seemed to replace her legs, Freddie could not help but remember the weirdo merman from the other day. In fact she wondered if he was around, which might have caused for her to leave right away. But there didn't seem to be a sign of him anywhere, and maybe this one wouldn't be so hands on. In any case you couldn't really fool Freddie twice, so whatever this one might be thinking of doing with her, she wouldn't get a chance to.
"What's up?" She asked, visibly annoyed that her relaxation had been interrupted. She really needed this.
