Who: Artemis Young and her new pet Porkchop
Where: Scarlet Oak Animal Shelter.
When: Sunday, June 21st / 2009 [Afternoon]
Artemis headed over to the Scarlet Oalk Animal Shelter on foot. Well. As close to foot as she possibly could describe it. Tell most people you traveled anywhere by a bunch of Air Sprites picking you up and you were bound to have somebody look you straight in the eye and call you crazy. So she managed to set herself down right behind the complex, making sure that nobody was peeking at her as she fell to the ground easily, landing on her feet gracefully. The only think she hated about air travel was the fact that her hair? It would always be a right mess when she got to her destination. That and you couldn't wear skirts, awfully drafty after all. She straightened herself out though, tugging her hair back in to an elastic band and pat down the loose tendrils that managed to escape...good enough.
Heading towards the front of the building she made a mental note of the dog she'd seen on the website. He was perfect. Artemis had wanted to go in and get him the day before but she'd gotten so sidetracked by bringing Ren something to eat, and then working on her bike, that she'd forgotten all about getting a dog until that morning when she went back to her computer and found the picture of him still up on her screen.
Now anybody who knew Artemis would likely tell her that getting a dog was likely, not a very good idea. Artemis was such a flighty person that she often did things on a whim and then forgot she'd even done them, not a day later. Of course, an animal wasn't going to let you forget about it, and so she'd be okay getting a dog. It would nudge you, bark at you and if you were really not getting it, likely take a nice big piss on your floor. You were bound to notice that, weren't you? Her arguments, while not the strongest were also not completely invalid either. She likely wouldn't be the best of pet owners, but she surely wasn't going to be the worst. And really? That was better then being put down, Artemis had to say. Walking in to the facility she spoke to the desk person about seeing the pup she'd found online. The woman gave her a funny look, as if to say 'Really' and then directed her in to the back, after signing in.
Artemis happily did so before bounding down the way looking for her new dog. She knew that the two of them were going to get along so well. So what if the website had said he was 'dependent and rambunctious' and in need of some 'very strict love and care and extra training'. She was sure the shelter was exaggerating. How could the sweet innocent face of the dog on the screen do anything rambunctious (she'd ignored the small note on his habit of chewing on about everything, especially shoes). She'd get him a few chew toys, that's all he'd need to help with his chewing habits. Artemis was just so glad that nobody else had picked him out while she'd been off doing other things. She eventually found where his cage was, having to double back as she was completely distracted while walking and had come to the end of the aisle and not seen him.
"Porkchop!" She said standing in front of the kennel that they had him in. "Aren't you adorable." She said to the dog that was sitting in the corner gnawing on his food bowl, he looked up at her, his head tipping. Artemis, looking around, decided to sit when she realized there was nobody would stop her. Planting herself on the cold cement, she laced her fingers through the metal fence that was separating the two of them and she started to talk to him. "Well now you don't look like you'd cause too much trouble." She said ignoring the large hunks of plastic that had been chewed off of the dog's food bowl. "You're probably just so lonely in there."
Porkchop, agreed with this and got up, lumbering over to Artemis and sniffing her fingers that were on the other side of the gate. He didn't seem to find her offensive and so he sat down next to the kennel fence, allowing her to reach trough and scratch at his ears with her fingers. She leaned in and tipped her head to the side, looking at him carefully. She looked around again before whispering softly. "If you're like, gonna run off to be somebody's familiar though, you gotta tell me now so I can let you go after I adopt you." She looked at him seriously, waiting for an answer. When he didn't give her one she laughed and grinned. "No answer huh?" She asked him as he grunted tipping his head towards her scratching fingers. "Good enough for me."
It didn't take long before Artemis was filling out the paper work and paying the fees she needed to pay to get her new dog out of jail, so to speak. The woman who was a little bit leery of Artemis, wondering if the woman wasn't going to be bringing back the beast after just a few days, but Artemis insisted that he was going to find a home with her and that she would take good care of the bull dog.
A little while later, Artemis was walking out of the Shelter with Porkchop. She was so excited and couldn't wait to bring him home to her housemates, knowing they were just going to love the dog. She bent over and pet his ears. "You are going to fit right in at home." She said standing up and looking down at Porkchop with loving and adoring eyes...
...just as he vomited plastic bowl chunks all over Artemis's shoes.
