Making Plans
Who: Hayden and Christian
When: Afternoon
Where: Hayden's room
Christian had been working on Hayden's wall for a good two hours at this point. Sheets spread out to keep paint from dripping to the floor and ruining carpet. He was nearly finished with the wall which was turning out pretty good. He wanted to do something that had a little fire in it, but a forest fire totally wouldn't work without her parents being all 'what the hell' about it. So he'd ended up painting a balcony over looking the beach. Little candles spread out over the ledge overlooking the scenery below.
Stepping back and wiping the back of his hand against his forehead, leaving a little yellow streak that he didn't notice, Christian looked at what he'd created. Tilting his head, he tried to find where he needed to add touch ups.
While Christian painted, Hayden hadn't done much of anything but lay on her bed on her stomach, her head resting on her folded arms, watching. She supposed she could have helped, but there wasn't anything productive for her to do, other than grab him a new paintbrush or something, and Christian seemed pretty adept at doing all of this on his own. As the picture came together, her smile continued to widened. It looked great, and the best thing was that it had lit candles... along with water. It fit perfectly. "It looks really good," Hayden said, once Christian stepped back to look at it. She hadn't wanted to talk much while he was painting, since she didn't know how much silence and concentration he needed.
Christian smiled a little, even though a flush twinged his cheeks. "You think so?" he asked as he glanced over his shoulder at her. "I wanted to pull the fire into it a little. Subtle hints of it work better than massive flames all over your walls I think."
"Subtle is good," Hayden agreed, lifting herself up to lean on her elbows. "I think my parents might have been worried if you'd painted fire all over the place. I think this is just really pretty and looks like a basic kind of scenery painting." She paused before smiling. "I like the water the best."
He smiled and set his paint supplies down on the little table he'd been using, covered in newspaper of course before walking towards the girl. "I kinda wanna kiss you for liking the water the best." he smiled. "But I don't wanna get you all covered in paint."
She grinned and pushed up onto her knees, scooting forward to the edge of the bed until she gripped his shoulders. Hayden leaned in to kiss him on the mouth softly. "I don't care about the paint." She couldn't help but giggle a tiny bit before lifting her fingers to brush over his forehead where the yellow smudge was.
Christian tried to look at his forehead, but it just looked like he was rolling his eyes or something. "I made a mess didn't I?" he asked. "Yellow?" he guessed, knowing that he'd rubbed his face. He didn't wait for her to respond before tilting his head to steal another kiss. "I bet you look good in paint." he smiled.
Hayden laughed and shook her head. "Not that big of a mess. It just looks like you've been painting is all." She kissed him back and rested her arms over his shoulders. "I would make a much bigger mess than this if I was painting. I'd have more of it on my face than on the wall, probably."
That got a grin from Christian. "That would be something interesting to watch." he told the girl. "You all covered in paint." he chuckled. "Do you think your parents will like it?" he asked, glancing over his shoulder for a quick look at his painting and then back at Hayden.
"I think they'll love it," Hayden said, using Christian as leverage as she climbed off her bed and walked over to the wall to examine it closer. "It's really great... and it makes me more convinced that you should find some way to do this for a living. I bet you could make a lot of money."
Blushing just slightly, Christian shrugged. "I don't think it's that great." he said. "It's good, I'm glad you like it though, that's the important part." he smiled. "It's one of a kind, just for you." he said. "No one else has one like it, that's for sure."
"You're too modest though," Hayden said flippantly. "That's why you only think it's good." She turned to him and smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck again. She didn't care that he had paint on him at all. "I feel special then. Are you going to sign your name on it too?"
Christian shrugged a little. "I can if you want." he said with a slight nod, kissing her forehead and then tipping his head enough to kiss her mouth. "I'm glad you like it." he said again. "I was worried it'd suck and you'd wonder why you let me do it."
"I want you to," Hayden said with a nod. She kissed his lips softly before stepping back to let him do so. "I love it. It makes me want to move pictures and stuff off of all of my walls so you could paint something." She smiled and turned back to look at the painting. "I feel like I should do something for you in return."
Taking a little black paint on one of his brushes, Christian wrote his name in one of the corners, small enough that it wouldn't be seen unless you were really looking for it. "You don't have to do anything for me." he told her, shaking his head a little. "You do plenty just by being around."
She watched him, smiling a touch because the whole thing was pretty sweet. "Looks great," she said, motioning to the signature. "Could have made it bigger though." She poked him playfully in his side. "If being around is all it takes to get you to draw for me, I need to hog up more of your time." Hayden stepped back, her hands on her hips as she observed the painting again. "Are you hungry? Do you want some lunch or something?"
"You can hog up all the time you'd like." he smiled. "And yeah, sure. We can get some lunch. You wanna go out or just get something here?" Christian asked. "I'm good with whatever you'd like to do. Or I could order pizza if you want. While I clean up and stuff. I'm all covered in paint."
"I can order a pizza," Hayden said, walking over to retrieve her phone from her dresser. "And then I can help you clean up." That was the least she could do, since obviously she couldn't help with the whole painting part. "I can't wait to take pictures and show people."
He smiled at that. "Lemme wash up real quick and I'll come back to help with putting this stuff away." he said with a nod. Leaving the room long enough to head to the bathroom and wash his hands and face and arms, Christian returned all clean again and started to put the brushes all together on a sheet of news paper to be washed off when he finished capping paint.
While he was gone, Hayden ordered a pizza, took a couple pictures of the painting on her camera phone, and then started gathering things together. When Christian returned, she smiled. "We can rinse the brushes out in my bathroom sink if you want. Is anyone else in your family an artist?" She wondered where he got his talent, if it was in his genes, or just something that came naturally to him on his own.
"No." he said, shaking his head a little. "At least not that I know of." Christian told her as he finished up capping the bottles of paint he'd been using. "Alright yeah, we can wash them out in there, it won't stain your sink or anything." he assured her.
"Do you think your mom was an artist?" Hayden asked absently, picking up the other bits of newspaper used to keep the carpet from getting paint on it. She stood up and crumpled them together as best she could to toss in the garbage.
"I sometimes wonder." he admitted. "I just don't know how to ask. I don't like bringing her up to dad, I'm sure it still hurts and Day wasn't very old when she died so I don't know if he'd remember." he sighed, snagging the brushes and taking them off to her bathroom to wash them up. When he returned with the clean brushes, he put them in his case and looked over at Hayden. "Maybe she was, maybe that's where I get it from."
She glanced over at him while he spoke and then nodded a touch. She said nothing until he returned from the bathroom. He wasn't getting all weird and quiet on her about his mom, so she continued. "Maybe your dad would like it if you asked? Maybe he'd like to talk about her too, but he just doesn't know how to approach it. Possibly sharing such a talent with your mom would be something that maybe he wouldn't mind talking about."
"Yeah, but what if he sees it as something that reminds him of her and it upsets him?" Christian asked. "I don't want to make him unhappy if I can help it. That's the last thing that I want to do."
"I don't know if you would make him unhappy," Hayden pointed out. "Maybe he wants to be able to talk about her, but maybe he thinks talking about her to you will make you unhappy. She was his wife, you know? And you and Day probably remind him of her every day, and clearly he loves you both a lot."
Christian nodded a little. "Maybe." he said. "I guess the only way to find out is to ask him about her. I guess I've just been avoiding it a little." he admitted. More like a lot. He never wanted to talk about his mother. He felt too guilty for taking her away.
A little? Hayden arched an eyebrow, but didn't comment on that. He had gotten angry with her before over talking about his mother, but right now, he seemed to be more open to it. "I think you should. Who knows? Maybe he'll tell you all of this stuff you never knew... and she'll become much more clear to you as a person."
"I don't know..." Christian said, shrugging a little. "It's hard to talk about her." he admitted. "I just..." Feel like I don't deserve to talk about her. "I don't know." he sighed.
"But don't you think, that maybe if you talk about her, it won't be as hard?" Hayden reached out to brush some of his hair from his forehead. "Maybe you'll find you really like talking about her, and hearing about her." Maybe it would be a bonding thing for Christian and his dad? She knew Mr. Danui worked a lot, and she could tell Christian resented that a tiny bit. Maybe this would be something to bring them closer together.
"I doubt anything could make it easier." he admitted. "It's been too long. It's just... a touchy subject for me." Christian mumbled. "Maybe I'll talk to him eventually I just don't know when." He wasn't going to tell her that he would talk to his father, there was a chance he'd never bring up his mother to him.
"You never know unless you try, Christian." She had a feeling he wouldn't ever talk to his dad about his mom. He would either be too scared too, or feel too guilty. If Mr. Danui was there right now, Hayden would be asking for Christian, at least to get the conversation going. "Do you want to go downstairs and wait for the pizza?"
"Yeah." he nodded, glad to be moving off the topic of his mother. He just didn't feel like talking about her, it was far too painful. She wasn't around anymore and it made him all the more depressed. Reaching out to take her hand, he made for the door to her room, giving her fingers a little squeeze.
Hayden squeezed his hand back and led him down the hall and then the stairs. "So I was thinking you and I could go do something together soon? Like, away from Scarlet Oak. Maybe drive to the beach or something?" She wanted to get out and enjoy the sun, and the weather this summer. Not that she didn't enjoy being inside with Christian, but Hayden was starting to feel that itch to socialize and take advantage of her summer vacation.
He smiled at that. "Yeah." he nodded. "Definitely." With summer came free time and lots of it. Being near the beach would be a lovely way to spend some of that free time. Christian could deal with the sun and even people if it meant being around that much water and Hayden.
"Good." She got to the bottom step and hopped off before leading him to the living room. "So... my parents have this dinner fundraiser thing for my dad's work on Friday night." Hayden looked at Christian with a small smile. "They'll be getting home really late." She hoped he caught what she was saying.
Christian flushed a little, mostly at the thoughts that ran through his head. "So you want me to come over?" he asked her, eyes catching hers as the flush deepened. He really shouldn't have such a vivid imagination but the things he pictured in his head were almost as good as the real thing.
She caught the flush on his face, which made her smile widened and her confidence spike. "Yes. They'll be leaving around six thirty. It's like, a dinner and speaker thing, and then dancing and all that stuff. So maybe you can come over around seven?" Her own imagination had been running wild all week thinking about it, and she was feeling a ton of anticipation.
He nodded at her question. "Yeah." he told her. "Yeah... I'll come over." Christian smiled. "Um... what all do you wanna do?" he asked. "Should I bring movies or something?" he questioned, worrying on his bottom lip.
Hayden turned and wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him close enough that she could press a small kiss against his lips easily. "You can bring movies," she told him before kissing him again. "Though I'm sort of hoping we'll be too busy to watch them."
He kissed her back, slipping his arms around her waist and holding her there against him. "Too busy..." he repeated. "Yeah." He bit his bottom lip and flushed again. With all the things they'd done together, he should be less prone to blushing so much. "I have the feeling we'll be plenty busy." he told her, kissing her once more. "You sure they'll be out late?" Getting caught wasn't something that Christian wanted to do.
Hayden brushed her fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck. "Positive. They never get home from these things until way late. And by then they're usually tipsy or drunk from all the booze anyway. We'll be in my room, with the door locked, so you've got nothing to worry about." She was glad he wasn't freaking out about it, or nervous. She was already imagining the night to be perfect.
"Okay." he said with a little nod. "If you're sure we won't get caught." Christian said. He trusted her to know her parents a lot better than he would know them. Plus his head was too focused on what would be happening while they were gone.
"I promise we won't." She grinned and tried not to be too amused by his constant worry. "I think you stress yourself out too much over these things." Hayden placed another kiss on his lips. "If anything happens to change between now and then, I'll let you know. Until then, I wouldn't worry. Just come over around seven and... er, come prepared." Hopefully he would know what she meant by that. It wasn't that Hayden wasn't capable of buying protection, but that was just too embarrassing!
When she said the words 'come prepared', Christian couldn't help but flush a desperate shade of crimson. He nodded a little and a bit of terror crossed over him. What if he looked like an idiot buying condoms? What if he wimped out when he came to her place and just couldn't do it? What if he couldn't figure out which way to put the condom on? What if he fumbled? The more he thought about it, the more terrified he became. "Okay." he said softly. Maybe he could go incognito with a hoodie and dark glasses and no one would know it was him buying the condoms. God how embarrassing it would be if he happened to know the clerk. Especially if it was someone that didn't particularly like him.
Hayden knew if she felt embarrassed over the idea of buying condoms, she knew Christian was probably dying inside over the prospect of having to do it. Taking Christian's hand, she led him farther into the living room. "Do you want to watch a movie or something? The pizza should be here any second."
Dying was a good way to describe it. Christian nodded. "Yeah. Movie sounds good." he smiled. "Comedy?" Maybe laughing a little would pull his mind away from the how to buy condoms thoughts that continued to trail through his brain.
"Definitely a comedy," Hayden agreed. "You can pick it out, and I'll grab the money for the pizza." Kissing Christian on the cheek, Hayden released him to go into the kitchen to grab her purse. She knew she ought to be more down, with the current events happening in town, but she couldn't really stifle her good mood. And she was trying not to be too giddy about the upcoming weekend. It was still a couple days away, after all, but it was something she was looking forward to, and she didn't think anything was going to spoil that for her.
