A few times I've been around that track
Who: Tessa and Nick (plus an NPC neighbor, plus familiars)
Where: Outside Camelot Place to start
When: Morning

It is getting late. You should wake up.

Inaki's paw pushed at Tessa's face and she swatted it away, rolling over in her bed, onto her stomach. "Thought I told you not to sleep in my bed," she muttered.

There was a pause, and then the fox sniffed at her head, nose cold as it brushed over her ear. Can you hear me?

"Of course I can hear you, idiot. You're always in my head." Tessa pulled the sheets over her head, because no matter what time it was, she was not ready to get out of bed this morning. "Why would you ask a stupid question like that?"

Because for the last three days, you have not answered anything I have told you. You even tried to give me away to someone else like you did not recognize me. She felt Inaki's tail thumping on the bed, right next to her arm. I was... most disturbed. You are quite lucky you did not get into any serious danger while I was unable to advise you.

She groaned. "You say that like I'm going to, I don't know, get hit by a car or something if you're not around." But now that she thought about it, the last few days had been... weird. She'd seen Troy and Jackson, she knew that. And it felt like Jackson wasn't Jackson, but like he'd... been another brother? And Inaki was right, she had been weirded out by the fox following her around. Like she'd forgotten she had a familiar at all. "Before you ask? No, I haven't been drinking and no, I didn't do any drugs, okay? Just... fuck." Her memories were fucked up, somehow. And she had no idea what was out there that could potentially do that.

Inaki used a paw to pull down the covers, so she was forced to look at him. I am glad, and the fox actually sounded amused by that, that you are still your usual self. You should get out of bed, however. I feel as if Troy may need you.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm going." It was no surprise that Tessa disliked mornings, especially when she looked up the weather for the day. Downpours in the afternoon were a great way to piss off any fire elemental for sure. Just meant she'd probably spend the day inside the dojo until she absolutely had to go out in that mess. After a quick shower and gathering her things, she headed out towards her car, Inaki tagging along. This time she didn't mind the fox's presence, and she felt kind of bad about how she'd treated him the last few days. Sure, Inaki liked to act like he was her conscience, as if she didn't have one of her own, but she did love him, and couldn't imagine her life without him now.

She was so lost in her thoughts as she dug her keys out of her purse that she didn't notice one of her neighbors lingering in the parking lot. She did, however, look up when he whistled in her direction. "Looking good over there. Where you off to, sweetie?" the guy called over to her, winking at her.

"Ugh," was the first word that got out of her mouth, followed by, "Legit, do you think that works on women or do you just genuinely not know any better?"

"Don't you know how to take a compliment?"

"Sorry, catcalls aren't appropriate. Ever." If he came closer, she was tempted to remind him that there was a reason she was dressed in workout gear, and it wasn't to go to the gym. Or maybe she would light him on fire. It would be overkill, but he'd certainly get the message, wouldn't he?

One of the first things that had hit Nick that morning -- other than Major's tail, clean across the face, with a psychic harrumph to go right along with it -- was the memory of the attack that had almost ended his life, a recollection that he had lived without for a few days at least and genuinely felt better for. Less on edge, more relaxed. Now that it was back he was moving around the apartment with the automatic motions of someone not really paying attention to what he was doing but following some sort of routine that had been carried out hundreds of times before, if not more. Nick was running through his mental list of possibilities for what had happened, taking the incident at the high school into account. Even after he cleaned himself up for the morning, showering and clothing himself and pulling on some shoes so he could head down the hall to push the garbage down the chute, he was still thinking about what he had been without for almost half a week. Not much, all things considered, his interactions with the people around him, namely his sister, hadn't been all that changed, but it was the principle of the thing that perturbed him more than anything.

"You don't like that someone messed around in your head." Major sounded drily amused by that fact and Nick turned a scowl in his familiar's direction. "The truth hurts sometimes." If the cat had been capable Nick was certain he would have been smiling then and if he looked hard enough he could have sworn the feline's mouth was angled up at the edges just enough to pass for some sort of smirk.

"Stop being smug and come for a walk. You're putting on weight."

"Oh all the--!" Major's ears tipped back, his tail swishing irritably from side to side, but with a low feral roll in the back of his throat he stood and trotted after Nick as he headed out of the apartment. It was without much in the way of surprise but a decent amount of disappointment that he realised the chute was blocked, almost as if someone had forgotten to clear or empty it for a few days, and that meant heading all the way down to the dumpsters at the back of the building.

"Come on." Before his familiar could complain Nick started down, deciding to take the stairs so he wouldn't stink out the elevator with the bags gripped in one hand. Major grumbled to himself all the way down behind him and when they reached the ground floor he followed to the parking lot where the dumpsters were located. Nick had no sooner pushed the door open than a voice caught his ears and he followed it back to its owner quickly enough, catching sight of a man leaning against a car gesturing at someone else before he pushed off from the vehicle and crossed the gap between them.

"Perhaps we should go back inside."

Ignoring Major and his warnings Nick set the bags down and descended the few steps to the lot proper, his long legs eating up the ground between him and the man who was closing in on a woman who could only be described as petite. "Do we have a problem here?" he asked, not stopping until he was at least partially in the other guy's path and therefore cutting him off from his target.

Tessa, being that she was tiny and female, was used to men thinking they could have the upper hand with her. And she lived for the look on their faces when they realized she was a better, faster fighter than they were and she would get the upper hand. Inaki stayed close, as he always did when he thought there was danger, and the only acknowledgement of the fox's displeasure was the swishing of his tail. Do you wish for me to tear his eyes out? the fox asked, just for her.

No, Tessa answered, I want to do it myself. And Inaki let her be after that, because all Tessa needed was something to set her off. Just one step closer, a reason to put this idiot in his place, and she'd do just that. Shit, she'd even put on a show while she did it, the fire elemental in her more or less demanded it.

But then there was someone else stepping in, too. Another man, a neighbor presumably, and one Tessa didn't recognize. It wasn't often guys jumped to a girl's defense like that, even if Tessa didn't necessarily need him to. It was kind of sweet, in its own way, considering she didn't know either of the two guys.

The douchebag shook his head. "Not at all, man. Just trying to get little miss here to open up a bit and stop being such a bitch."

Tessa rolled her eyes. Being called a bitch wasn't an insult if it was true. "And someone's got his panties in a bunch because no one ever taught him how to talk to a girl. Seriously, take out your issues on someone else."

He blinked, and took a few steps towards her as if to grab her. Tessa never flinched, everything in her body prepared to take him on. He'd deserve it.

For Nick it was a simple matter of right and wrong, it was relatively black and white as far as he was concerned. Cruelty or abuse of any kind was unacceptable but especially when the odds were uneven as they seemed in this case at first glance. It was only when he got closer that something started to prickle at the back of his brain, a hint of awareness that hadn't yet taken form, hinting at something more going on here than met the eye. In his approach he hadn't seen the fox and now that he'd engaged in eye to eye contact with the other guy he couldn't break that. Though he wasn't a werewolf it was a simple matter of challenge and dominance and fire elementals weren't the types to back down. It was as simple as that.

There was the slightest trace of a smile on Nick's face at the sound of the woman's retort to the guy's bitter remark but it was gone in an instant when he recognised the intent behind that motion. Predatory, aggressive, there was no question about what he was planning to do. Nick might not have been on the front lines when he was overseas serving but he was still a soldier. He would always be a soldier.

Without hesitation Nick stepped into that advance and brought up one hand in a simple calculated strike, precise and powerful. It caught the other man in the throat and knocked him back, choking, one foot tripping on the other to spill him to the ground. Nick felt the tension through his shoulders and rolled them to ease it, turning to look back over his shoulder at the woman and it was as his eyes landed on her face that he heard it in his mind, a strong voice, proud and resolute.

She is Fire.

As soon as it had come it was gone again, there one moment and gone the next. Fire had said what He had come to say and had moved right along to other business. Nick allowed a faint sign of a smile to show on his face before he looked down at the choking man again. "I'm sorry," he said to him, "I can't understand a word you're saying. You're going to have to speak up."

Sadly, this wasn't the first time something like this had happened to Tessa over the years. Guys always thought she was an easy target, thanks to her small stature, but she always had an ace up her sleeve. She'd literally spent her entire life training to take down someone who was bigger and stronger than her. Though she might not have the physical strength, she'd always have the speed. There were days when she could even take down Troy, and that was an accomplishment as far as Tessa was concerned. This moron wouldn't even stand a chance.

There was more the guy was about to say, but from out of nowhere, Guy #2 karate-chopped the douchebag in the throat. Tessa stood there for a second, blinked, and then snorted. It really was priceless, seeing this guy choke and stutter and fall to the ground, helpless. When Guy #2 looked over at her, she was grinning, smugly, because if he hadn't done it, then she was about to.

Still smirking, she went right over to the man, planted a foot in his chest - it would have been better if she were wearing heels, but alas, the flats she normally wore to the dojo would have to do - and stared down at him. "If that's not an apology that's trying to get out of your mouth, don't even bother," she said. "You live here, right? Unfortunately for you, so do I. And if I ever see your face near me again, you're probably going to want to look into getting a new apartment, because this is just child's play." Tessa had a katana in her car, after all, and she wasn't afraid to use it.

Some people might have seen it as unnecessarily chivalrous, perhaps even chauvinistic, of him to step in the way he had but to Nick nothing came more naturally than standing up for other people. It was why he had become a doctor, why he had joined the army, why he stood up to those who saw fit to belittle and bully those smaller or weaker than themselves. That sort of targeted cruelty or arrogance was never going to sit well with someone like Nicholas Bryant and that had been true for a long time now. His siblings could speak to and so could every single friend he'd had over the years, his parents too. They all knew it about him and for a lot of people it became obvious within a short space of time that he was always going to step in and stand up for the people around him if he felt they were being treated unfairly.

Without saying a word of protest or warning Nick allowed the woman to step in and take over, keeping his posture prepared and subtle tense, that of a soldier poised to leap into the fray. Just because he hadn't been on the front lines that didn't mean he hadn't had the same rigorous intense training everyone else had gone through.

The man on the ground was shaking his head with tears streaming from his eyes, waving one hand in an attempt to placate the pair standing over him, and Nick nodded his head. "I'd say that's all the apology and promise you're going to get." With a slight lift of one shoulder that passed for a shrug he went on to add, "He probably won't be able to talk for a while." Addressing the man instead then he said, "You're going to want to get some ice on that." With any luck the woman would take that as a cue to let the scumbag off the ground so he could scurry back inside to wallow in his shame and embarrassment.

If Guy #2 thought he needed to keep on defending her, and didn't let her have her chance to mock this idiot too, then there would have been words in his direction. She appreciated the thought, but it wasn't necessary. Just seeing the prick with tears running down his face, clearly terrified of them both, was victory enough. "Good," she said, "because that means you can't hit on anyone else for a while either." Tessa climbed off of him, still glaring daggers at him. "Go run home, asshole. And if you have any sense in that tiny little brain of yours, you'll stay there."

The guy didn't have to be told twice. As soon as Tessa let him up, he rolled onto his feet, unsteady, and took off towards his apartment. Tessa kept her eyes on him, more so to see which building he went into, taking note of it for future reference. She wasn't kidding when she said things would be worse if she ever saw him again, after all.

Next to her, Inaki's tail twitched. I would have let him burn.

"Trust me, I'm still considering it," she said. Perhaps it wasn't right to talk to her familiar in front of a guy she didn't know, but the fact that she had a fox with her was probably already a dead giveaway that she was something different. Whatever, it wasn't like Tessa cared who knew what she was, anyway. Then she turned to face Guy #2, her face settling into something a little more relaxed than how she'd been just a few moments before. "Thanks for jumping in, even if you didn't have to," she said. "The karate chop was a nice touch, I enjoyed that." She held out a hand to him. "I'm Tessa. Don't think I've seen you around here yet."

If the guy was terrified of them now he just needed to count himself lucky he hadn't seen what they were really capable of. Of all the Elementals the Fires were the most formidable, at least in Nick's mind, they had the most power behind their potential assaults and this idiot before them had no idea what he was really dealing with, the kinds of things they could do to someone like him if he'd pushed his luck and gone too far. It wasn't that Nick necessarily enjoyed bringing his powers into things but he didn't hesitate if it was necessary, he never shied away from doing what had to be done and on more than one occasion he'd managed to stealthily apply his abilities to his work when gazes were momentarily averted. It was a wonder really, the kinds of things you could do with heat when it came to the medical field.

Nick didn't realise Major had left the steps and trotted idly up to stand by his side until he felt the brush of a warm body against his outer calf. "With a familiar like that she might as well have a beacon." Nick mentally hushed his own familiar privately, grateful that the cat had at least only transmitted that remark to him and not the woman and the fox with her. With a swish of his tail Major twitched his ears, licked a paw and swiped it over one, sitting himself down beside Nick's foot as he did so. "It was just an observation."

"There's very little a good throat punch can't fix," he said with a hint of humour in his voice as he took her hand with his own, feeling the heat in her palm that was a match for his own, his smile growing more than a little. As if he'd needed confirmation. "I'm Nick. I live upstairs," he said, indicating with his other hand towards his floor, albeit a little vaguely, "I'm rarely here though. I work down at the hospital, I'm basically paying rent on a place I barely see."

Of course Fires were the most formidable. Tessa was quite fond of her element and while she could see the advantages the other elements had, she was meant to be a Fire. Hence why she saw little point in hiding it, because it made sense, given her personality and outlook on life. But there were other benefits, too, because she was sure her element had something to do with her desire to succeed, her willingness to help others - in the most unconventional way possible, but still, it was helping in her own way - and that hadn't changed with the Light of May. If nothing else, she had an excuse for some of her less rational behavior.

It was only when she looked over at him again that she noticed that Guy #2 - Nick, he'd said his name was - had a cat coming up to him, sitting by his feet. She'd never seen a cat act like that before, so calm and collected, but then again, she had a red fox at her feet, so she wasn't really able to talk. If Inaki gave her away as something supernatural, then perhaps Nick had a familiar, too. The fact that his skin was as warm as hers had her smiling.

"Nice to meet you, Nick," she said, letting go of his hand so she could push her hair out of her face. "I'm a martial arts instructor, so I know a million and one ways to make him get the message. Let me guess, you're one of those 'always on call' doctors who never gets to sleep in your own bed?" Which was great for him, actually, if he liked that sort of life. Tessa often found that she needed to blow off some steam every once in a while, and if she didn't do that, things could get ugly. No one wanted that.
