There was a fox in her studio apartment. It had been there when Desi woke up this morning, it was still there now, refusing to leave and not behaving like some wild animal, like what she suspected a fox would behave like if trapped inside a minimal amount of square feet with very few windows. It had seemed fine with the digs. And Desi hadn't been in the mood to deal with it, so she'd left everything locked up as best she could, prepared herself mentally for having to clean up fox poop when she got home, and left for Emilia's divorce celebration. Because that was definitely what she was calling it. And of course it was being held at Arwen's, because where else?
There had been a detour on the way, however. If ever there was a time to get collectively shitfaced it was now, so Desi had splurged a little of her small wages on some top shelf alcohol. She was in the kitchen making cocktails whose recipes she was googling at the same time when she heard the knock. And the knock. And mom opening the door. And then kids. "Oh crap." She hadn't realized the kids were coming with right away. So much for the cocktails, unless she made the rest of them virgin. Before she went out front to greet Emilia and her little niece and nephew, however, Desi finished the lemony concoction she had been trying. Might as well.
"Where are my two favorite people?" She called out arms wide as she moved towards Alexander and Rose, pulling them and Emilia into a hug. The kids greeted her with as much enthusiasm, which warmed Desi's heart. "Em, you're never going to believe this. There's a fox in my apartment! It won't leave!"
