getting to know this new me
WHO | Quinn & Zach
WHERE | The park
WHEN | Early afternoon
With cooler weather on the way, the park was not nearly as crowded as it had been during the summer. Quinn found that even though she did not care for the cool twinge in the air, she certainly appreciated being out in the open more so now than she had before her transformation. Especially, since she was taking full advantage of the outdoors to play with her abilities. The strangest thing, she’d come to realize, was that even though she was a new phoenix, the knowledge and instincts that came with what she was made her feel as though she was centuries old. It was this bizarre combination of foreign and familiar and it painted the way she looked at every single thing now. Perhaps if her talents were like those of her parents, she would have been able to write about it; surely they could understand the beauty that was so new to her. Unfortunately, she could not tell her parents about what happened. Her beautiful new world was wrapped in a gauze of secrecy, a fact that tainted her newfound view.
Except there was Chase. And though the circumstances were so questionable, she was more than thankful for his knowledge. He was someone who she could describe this to, someone who understood about as much as she did on the matter. Trusting people never came easily for Quinn, but with Chase she found that it seemed almost natural. Perhaps it was the phoenix in her. Perhaps it was just a quality that came with killing someone and bringing them back to life. She had never before had someone that she trusted so easily; even Nysa, who was an odd sort of friend in the beginning, trust was something that came after months of knowing her. Nysa knew her well enough to sense a difference, though. She wondered if the blonde was capable of harboring this sort of secret. It would certainly be nice to share with someone else.
Today, Quinn wanted to spend getting in touch with these abilities that she found herself with. She knew the ins and outs of what she could do, but she didn’t understand why she could do them. She hoped that with further practice and study, she would be able to find an answer. The biggest problem with playing with fire in her own home was quite simply that her house was not fireproof and singe marks were not exactly conducive to getting a security deposit back. The park was the closest place for her to practice her different abilities since there were plenty of bushes that she could hide behind to avoid catching too much attention. Which was what she was doing now. She slid the sleeves of her jacket up some and brought her hands together, as if they were cupping water. Instead of water, she was nursing a small ball of flame. The warmth felt wonderful along her fingertips (it still surprised her how nothing burned). She crouched, the damp grass soaking through the knees of her trousers, just letting the ball rotate in small circles in her hands. It felt so good to let the flames dance there, she began to whistle a soft tune. The melody was completely new to her, a song she had never heard before, but it was something lovely and it caused the flame to burn even brighter. It was so easy for her to become enraptured in what she could do that Quinn lost track of her surroundings for a minute. If she had been paying attention, she would have realized that she had caught someone’s attention.
