The trees around them thinned as they walked, soon to be replaced by ferns and smaller saplings. The soles of her shoes scraped against loose pebbles and she knew sidewalk was not far away. Once they returned to street lamps and concrete, they would part ways. Goodbyes would be sweet and short and Brendan would probably walk away, forgetting this interaction in a few days. Lida, on the other hand, would find where he lived, learn a few habits of his, and choose a moment to bump into him once more. Meeting an elemental was a huge opportunity for the guardian, and when that elemental showed potential, Lida was certain that Earth wanted her to guide and train them.
“Exactly,” Lida nodded. Being a vampire who was nearly four centuries old allowed her knowledge and experience of other supernaturals long before the Light of May, but she couldn’t play all of her cards in front of Brendan and maintain the image of a vulnerable single mother. “It’s fascinating to think of so many people living with abilities and not knowing that they’re special. Can you imagine living with that sort of untapped potential? It’s amazing to see that the world is never what we expected or assumed it to be.” Mother Nature is not so predictable as people.
