what i wouldn't give to get some rest.
Who: Zachary.
Where: His apartment.
When: Early morning.
Ever since his life had been upended he'd struggled to get a full night's sleep. He tried to sleep but could only ever get a few hours at a time before something woke him up. It wasn't always the same thing that caused him to wake up but for the past week or more thoughts of what he was going to do about his shop had plagued his mind and made sleep elusive. He'd managed about four hours this time but now he was lying in bed wide awake with his mind racing about his options. No one could come up with a solution to the tree in his store, let alone explain how it had come to be there. With each day that passed it seemed more and more likely that it wasn't going away and he wouldn't be able to reopen his store. He knew he had to make a decision about it soon but that didn't mean he liked his options.
The sun was seeping through the curtains and Zach could feel the warmth where it landed on the covers of the bed. He'd been awake since before sunrise and decided it was past time to actually get up. No sooner had his feet hit the floor then Sampson was next to him. A doggy smile on his face and his tail beating against the floor as it wagged. He offered the dog a smile and stretched his arms out before walking out of the bedroom with the Shepherd close behind. He made his way towards the kitchen with the intention of sorting out some food for Sampson before taking a shower. He stopped by the front door and checked outside to find his paper had already been delivered, at least he wasn't the only one up so early in the day. He tucked the paper under his arm and moved through to the small kitchen.
He was running on auto-pilot already, he flicked on the coffee maker which he'd set up the night before and turned the TV on, a local news channel showing continued coverage of the situation at the high school. Sampson sat patiently by his bowl waiting as Zach prepared his food, he smiled at the dog again. His dog the one reason that he even bothered to get up some days. Once he'd placed Sampson's bowl down he poured a cup of coffee and started looking over the paper. He hadn't intended to look over the property section but without even realising it that's where he ended up. The list of properties made him wonder why he hadn't seriously considered looking for a new store. It would be expensive but if it meant he could actually trade again then at least he would have money coming in again. At the moment money was going out but next to none coming in. He looked towards Sampson, who had finished eating and was looking back towards Zach. "What do you say, Sampson? Shall we see if we can't find a new store today?" he asked the dog and wasn't really looking for an answer but when Sampson barked in approval he wasn't surprised. He smiled at the dog again and nodded, "That settles it then, just let me shower and we'll go see what we can find." He left the kitchen with a plan for the day and for the first time in over a week he actually felt like things might go his way for once.
