bumping into someone new
Who: Halne and Josh
When: Afternoon
Where: Outisde SOHS
Josh had done his best to stay away from the chaos at the high school. He cared, in so much that he was concerned about the kids who were trapped there, but he didn’t think that warranted him going down to the school and taking up space. But then this morning, when he stepped next door for a breakfast muffin, Harper mentioned going on search for her lost grandmother. He knew from experience with his own Air elemental mother that it wasn’t that Harper had misplaced Lady Vi, but more likely that the older woman had lost herself. His father had always trusted Sarah to find her own way home, but with older Air elementals, it was hard to tell where their natural flightiness ended and old age began. When noon came and went without any word, Josh figured that Harper’s search had ended with the high school and she was waiting out for word. Raising hell, more likely, he thought with a smile as he made his own way toward the school. He wouldn’t be getting in the way if he was there making sure Harper wasn’t setting anyone on fire.
Josh was barely a block away from the high school when the first wave of chaos started to affect him. It wasn’t that there were a lot of people around him, but there was a lot of something else: technology. Normally cellphones didn’t affect him outside of the small nudge they gave to make him aware they were there, but here? All of these people were either using their phones to call someone or looking up information about the high school. The activity made the air thick with signal and he could feel his skin start to prickle as he walked deeper into the cloud.
He was stopped again when he reached the outer most layer of people surrounding the school. If he had to guess, he would say that they were comprised of looky-loos and those who had waited too long before deciding to stake out the school. Getting close would mean elbowing his way through the crowd and he wasn’t quite ready for such maneuvers just yet. Josh decided instead to take a walk around the edge of the crowd, scanning his eyes for the familiar sight of Harper; it would be considerably harder today, given that she wasn’t wearing her trademark blinding colors. He had taken no more than a few steps when his scanning eyes caused him to have a collision with one of the many people standing nearby. His head jerked forward to the woman he had apparently struck with the full force of his walking body. Josh reached out his hands to keep her from toppling over. “God, sorry about that.” He paused a moment to check the damage. “I guess I should be more careful with this many people around.”
