you won't get no sleep tonight
Who: Charlene and Roxy
When: Early Evening
Where: The Diaz house
Today was a bittersweet day, at least in Roxy’s opinion. The bitter came from the fact that the early A.M. shift she had worked this morning was the last that she would ever be working with Marcus. She had known for a while that he had been considering moving out of town, but she hadn’t known that he had actually decided to go through with it. Had she known when he turned in his two weeks, she would have likely hounded him until he changed his mind. Yes, it was selfish that she wanted to keep Marcus as her partner; not only had he been with her from the beginning, but he was also her friend, and Roxy didn’t give those up easily if she could help it. Having a new partner would mean getting adjusted to the habits of the other person and learning how to work in tandem with them on the scene, which took a lot more effort that people realized. She was acquainted with the other paramedics in Scarlet Oak, but none of them well enough to decide which she wanted as her new partner. Thankfully, the sweet part of her day was enough to push away most if not all of these troubling thoughts. Today was Charlene’s birthday! After she had gotten home and woken from her nap, it was impossible for Roxy to think of anything other than making sure that her house was in perfect condition. Her mermaid girlfriend had decided that she wanted to spend the night with her – the entire night – which she understood was a pretty big deal. Roxy had already talked to her mother and, faces of displeasure aside, she seemed to be reasonably fine with the idea. Okay – they had a small fight when she told her mother she should just stay as far from them as the house would allow if she couldn’t be nice to Charlene, which caused her mother to reply that it was her house and she could go where she wanted, but Roxy was confident that all would go well. Or at least that was what she was telling herself. “Those are not for you!” Roxy swatted at her brother Ricardo as he ate yet another sushi roll that she had made for Charlene. “Like she’s going to know if there’s one missing. You made thousands.” “Well I’ll know and if you eat one more, I’ll make sure you regret it.” Her brother gave her an eye-roll and a whatever before leaving the kitchen. Everything’s going to be fine. You may lose a few siblings before the night is over, but she’s going to have a great birthday. Roxy set herself to placing candles in the mermaid cake that she had gotten for Charlene as she repeated the ‘all will be fine’ mantra when she realized that she didn’t know exactly how many candles to set out. She racked her memory for any specific mention of the mermaid’s age, but she couldn’t find one; she had always just assumed that they were practically the same age. Twenty candles rounded out one side of the cake, so Roxy decided to leave it at that until she could ask Charlene to make sure. “She’s here, Roxy!” Roxy held her breath as she lit the candles as quickly as possible and picked up the cake to walk to the door. With her head she motioned for Jamie, who had been on lookout for Charlene’s arrival, to open the door for her so she wouldn’t have to risk dumping the cake into the floor. “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” The penguin bounced as she shouted out her surprise greeting. However, it wasn’t just Charlene that got a surprise. Roxy’s eyes opened wide with shock at her girlfriend’s outfit. “Lene… did you walk all the way here like that?” |
