listening in on each other's thoughts
Who: Dalila and Ronnie
When: First day of school (August 24th)
Where: SOHS
School was just one of those things that had to be done. It had to be done and Dalila's view had always been that if she could not have fun while she was being forced to go there then what was the point? Learning? Please, she could pluck the knowledge out of someone's head or teach herself. No, the real point of high school was other people. And getting things to pile on for college applications since they looked at those things these days. Otherwise it really was just... a giant social interaction. If she had thought that her parents would give her a straight answer and not just think white noise at her, then she would have asked what they really talked about at parent-teacher conferences. And here was where she was used to a booming voice interjecting in her thoughts about how silly that was. She may have only had Jaws since the middle of summer - okay, she had had him for over a year, but he had only gained a voice recently - but she was already used to the sound of his voice and it was downright weird to not have him there to offer it. Maybe tomorrow she would give into his demands and allow him to accompany her in that big water bottle she had. It could not be too bad for him if he was only stuck in it for about eight hours...
Oh well, that was tomorrow. All she had to do now was get through today without anything happening. Usually that was easy unless the vice took issue with her outfit or - as she remembered from over a year ago when she had been in the same school with him - Rico saw someone flirting with her. That latter was actually usually pretty funny until he ended up in detention or expelled or something, but Dalila had every intention of being good for at least the first week. That way Rico would not end up in trouble and she would not have to put up with listening to their mother go on about this or that or giving her that look that said she was pretty sure she had done this on purpose. Dalila rolled her shoulders as she stepped into the classroom and went to claim the seat behind her best friend. It was better to sit behind Lumen, it really was, because if she sat in front of her then it would be easier for the teacher to see the expressions that she made when her friend thought things on purpose just to get her -
Dalila's train of thought cut off when she heard something that she did not like. She was always actively 'listening' to everyone around her in case someone tried to get her attention, but usually the thoughts that she heard filtered right past because there were the typical or nothing worth noting. Except for right now. Instead of poking Lumen in the back of the head like she had planned on doing, she frowned and glanced around until she found what was putting forth that odd thought-echo in her mind. Someone who could hear her thoughts. Dalila hated that, she really did. She had known another telepath in school last year and had been somewhat okay with him since he did not go telling anyone that hey, the new girl is actually deaf, or anything. New people were a concern, especially now that the Light of May had happened and made it 'okay'. Only no, it was not okay, Dalila did not want a single person she had not explicitly told to know that she was any sort of handicapped. Which was why she paid almost no attention to the entire class, her eyes locked on the girl she did not even recognize who could hear what she was thinking. The second the bell rang she told Lumen to go on ahead and save her a seat in their next class and then she planted herself in front of the girl's desk before she had a chance to rise. "So," she started, toying with her bracelet as she tried to decide what to say and went ahead with picking the girl's name out of the head of the teacher who had glanced their way. "Ronnie? We should probably talk." Ten minutes before the next class started would at least be enough time to get this girl to agree to meet her after school or at lunch. Provided that Lumen did not threaten to light her hair on fire if she skipped out on lunch with her.
