right off the bat, you knew what you were getting into.
Who: Jackson and Lida.
Where: Lida’s house and the surrounding area.
When: Late evening.
It was a stupid thing to do, reckless and even bordering on completely unnecessary, at least in the opinion of sensible people, or it would have been if he’d thought to ask for anyone else’s opinion. He hadn’t. Jackson hadn’t told anyone what it was he was doing in between stints at helping to put the dojo back together and doing anything else Troy needed done that he couldn’t do himself. The werewolf had done everything in his power to make himself useful but it just didn’t feel like enough somehow. Moving furniture and cleaning up what was left of the vampire’s mess was all well and good but it didn’t satisfy a need he felt deep down inside. A need for something not unlike vengeance, or to at least for some sort of justice.
This vampire had almost killed Troy, had wounded him so severely that the elemental had been unable to heal himself and in Jackson’s understanding that was beyond severe. Who knew what would have happened if he hadn’t gotten back to the dojo when he had? Jackson didn’t like to think about it, it filled his stomach with stomach and laced his throat with a foul taste that wouldn’t go away no matter how much he swallowed to try and get rid of it. In the space of six months he had already failed more than enough people and he wasn’t going to let anyone else lose their life because of him.
Because of him. That was a ridiculous angle to approach the whole thing from. None of this was his fault and on some level, sensibly, he knew that. He couldn’t have known a vampire would attack while he was out, or that Troy was lying there bleeding, hurt and alone, desperately needing someone to find him before his life slipped out of him and all over the floor on which he lay. The more he thought about it the more Jackson hated his impulsiveness, that he had chosen that day to go out at that time, that he hadn’t been there to help the man who had gone out of his way to help him when he needed someone.
This was Jackson’s way of making up for that. Regardless of what anyone else might think Jackson believed he did have to take action, do something proactive, and so here he was, skulking around where he didn’t belong. In the growing darkness his dark fur blended with the swelling and stretching shadows perfectly as he sniffed and stalked silently around the edge of the house. The scents were stronger now and he paused below a window long enough to see something move past the portal above his head, someone stepping from one room to another. Just as silently he turned, his tail brushing the side of the house with a whisper of a sound as he made his way back to where he’d stashed his clothing.
Transforming back always disoriented him a little, even at his age and with as many years of shifting as he had under his belt. Even before that had passed he was pulling on his clothes, only taking his eyes from the nearby house in brief intervals. When he’d been with Tessa he hadn’t worried about being seen loping across the street in wolf form, people kept all kinds of strange pets and he’d stuck to her side like glue, but when he was alone he would draw more attention. So he’d had to find a way through the back where there was more cover and change in the shelter of the foliage there, within sight of the house. Not the safest option given where he was and what it was he was dealing with but it was better to take the risk than panic the humans in the surrounding area. If he panicked the neighbours then he would have a hard time coming back in the future.
