‘I can’t believe you only brought one of my sweaters with you.’ Lumen rolled her eyes and sighed as her familiar complained for what felt like the 500th time about her lack of wardrobe for the weekend. She wished that she had never had the idea to torture Polly by shoving her fat fluff in pet clothing in the first place; it had only come back to bite her. “I can’t believe that you think anyone cares.” Even if she didn’t have other things on her mind, it was unlikely that Lumen would have given it more than a second’s thought. When she had stopped home after school yesterday, it had only been long enough to grab a pile of clothes so she would have something to wear this weekend. That Polly got anything at all out of the mix was a feat in itself. Her mind was focused on the fact that today was the day that their private slumber party would be invaded by a third person. It wasn’t the first time that Lumen had had to share her sleepovers with Dalila’s other friends, but that didn’t mean that she had grown accustomed to it. She was lucky that this time Dalila had given her enough of a head’s up so that she could adjust to the idea. If she had been told that Darklis was coming over, Lumen would have likely thrown a fit the likes of which would have gotten her kicked out of the Palminteri household. It was fortunate then that the third member of their party was Evelyn Montgomery. Of all of Dalila’s “alternative” friends, she was the one that Lumen could tolerate the most. All that stood between them being close friends, at least where she was concerned, was the fact that Evelyn was a part of the popular crowd in school and Lumen felt that, being an outsider, she should dislike her on that principle alone. Then again, Dalila was considered part of the same clique and it never ceased to make Lumen laugh until she cried when Evelyn would cut someone down. “Do you think she forgot she was supposed to come over today?” Lumen called out through the house to Dalila from the kitchen. It was incredibly likely, and yet another reason why she was glad to be a fire elemental. Sure, her temper got a little out of hand from time to time, but that was a hell of a lot better than being an airhead. She could have gone on to make list in her head of all the ways that fire was not only better than air but every other element; she didn’t, however, because she didn’t want to deal with the mental backlash Dalila would no doubt send her way once she got to water. “Not my fault that your element is lame,” she muttered under her breath as she looked through the cabinets for something to snack on. Her stomach was growling for dinner, but they would have to wait for Evelyn, of course. Just as she had started considering making puppy eyes at Dalila and begging for them to go ahead and eat, the doorbell rang. “I GOT IT!” Lumen rushed toward the door, sliding to a halt just before it thanks to her socks. It didn’t matter that this wasn’t her house, or even her sleepover. She wanted to make sure that she was the one who greeted Evelyn to the party. As far as she was concerned, the two other girls were not about to have a second out of her sight. Lumen threw the door open with a large smile. “Evelyn! You made it! I was starting to think you had forgotten where Dalila lived.” She swore it was just a friendly jab – well, mostly. |
