Candy woman
Who: Regina and Kat
When: Afternoon
Where: The mall

Regina was a lot happier lately, and she had reasons for it. Although she had not yet seen her son - at least not upclose and personal - she and Clive had been getting things back on track and it felt great. Being the first day of class Clive was at the school, and since Regina had the evening shift at the restaurant she thought she might as well hit the mall to do some shopping - there was only so much clothing from the 80s one could recycle after all - and then hit the candy shop. Unlike most people Regina had about as much sugar when she was happy as when she was depressed, perhaps even more.

With two bags of newly purchased clothes hanging from her wrist, she made her way to the candy shop where she was sure she would spend a long time. There was everything there and Regina had no idea where to begin choosing from. It was with a wide smile and wide eyes that she roamed about the shop, picking up ridiculously big lollipops, gummy creatures of all kinds, shapes and colors, some sugary some not, and all else she could get her hands on. Pretty soon her first bag was full, and she needed another one. It was good to be an angel and not be affected by things such as cholesterol and diabetes, thought Regina. Otherwise her life would be that little bit sadder.

The first day of school was something that Kat hadn't really had to deal with in a long time. Oh sure, every year she still had that first day but it wasn't the same as the first day at a totally new school. The only time she'd had to go through that before was when she was moving from elementary to middle and middle to high, and then it'd been easy because there was a whole bunch of other people who were new. This time it wasn't the same. But it was still pretty easy because she wasn't even the most noteworthy new girl. No, that title went to the pretty blonde in her grade. Darklis. The vampire. Kat hadn't come across a lot of them, a whole two now, but they had a pretty distinct scent. And her nose had been going crazy all day, picking up that vampire scent and then all the different sort of were's, and it was very different than back out west. Oh sure there'd been supernaturals but she'd gotten pretty used to them. These were all different and when it was all over she was glad to borrow her mom's car to go to the mall. Borrow might not have been the right word since Linda didn't exactly know, but Kat would worry about that when she came back. If she ended up grounded again then so be it, in this weather it wasn't like there was anything she could do outside.

Backpack slung over one shoulder, Kat had scurried into the mall fast as she could to try and keep her hair from getting soaked and ruined. I should've asked Cole if he wanted to come... or maybe Otter. That was the one cool thing about going to school here; she already knew some of her classmates thanks to all of the winters that they'd spent together. But this afternoon she was just going to be by herself. Although the more she thought about that phrase 'by myself' the more lonely she started to feel. Penguins were not supposed to be alone. Which was probably why she drifted into the candy store. There were always people inside of there and oh, yep, there was a woman filling a bag up with candy. Or she was on her second bag. Shifting, Kat stepped over to look at the same wall and smiled. "Got a bit of a sweet tooth, huh? Totally guilty of that too. One of my friends works at his family's sweets shop back in Scarlet Oak and I can only visit rarely or I think I'd put on like, twenty pounds in a week."

When she was almost done with her second bag - and she would only stop there because she lacked any more arms to hold any more bags - she saw the teenage girl approaching her, and smiled. She wasn't one of her charges - Regina would feel it if she were - but Regina didn't mind that. Knowing there was at least one happy teenager in the world was a good thing, and she got along just fine with them even if they weren't troubled. She snickered at the girl's comment, shrugging. "Just a bit? I think not. You're very lucky to have a friend whose family owns one of those, I'd be in there all the time if I were you. And I think I know which one you mean. It's the only shop of the kind in Scarlet Oak, right?" Regina was just happy to be having a random conversation with someone; although she had Clive and he was the whole world she lacked any more friends or people she really spent time with, and socializing was important to her.

"Say, did they ever make a jawbreaker you can actually finish?" She didn't want to reveal the fact that she hadn't been on earth since the nineties, but this was an important question as far as Regina was concerned. "If you want I can share my stash with you, I'm always happy to have some company with my sweets!" She offered, making her way to the cashier, completely ready and willing to splurge on the sweets. She probably ended up spending more on those than on clothes eventually, and that was saying something.

Kat had been told, like every other kid in existence, that she wasn't supposed to talk to strangers. A lesson that had been a little more firmly enforced after the Light of May. Why that was she didn't know since they'd always known about supernaturals, but it'd gone down that way. But this woman didn't look any sort of threatening she she smelled good. Not just her perfume or whatever she was wearing, but her. Which was sort of a little weird, but Kat wasn't going to say anything about it. That'd probably be rude. "Okay, so you have a lot of candy. If I went home with that much then I think my mom'd have a fiiiit. But yeah, it's the only one like that, Snow White Sweets. Huuuuge family runs it." Okay, hers could match them practically step for step but they were half-Chilean and it happened.

Slinging her backpack around, Kat unzipped it and rustled around inside until she found her half-finished bottle of water from class. Pulling it out she took a long drink and considered the offer for a moment. Really pretended to consider. Ever since she'd realized that she had come to the mall alone she had wished that she hadn't. "I think that I'll actually take you up on that. Since y'know, you offered and I'm pretty sure it's like, a sin to turn down offers of candy." If Roxy ever found out that she had then that was for sure negative cool points. Such a thing did totally exist. "BTW; my name's Kat." Oh yes, she was totally one of those girls who used the abbreviations in her speech that she used in her texts. Drove her mother insane. "We just moved to town a few months ago, though we've always been here in the winter before. You must like, go to UofM or be a townie. Which is cool!" Some people thought townies were awful. Kat wasn't one of them.

Not being around kids for a long while, Regina had completely forgotten about the 'talking to strangers' thing and hadn't even thought that she might come off as creepy by inviting a strange girl to share her candy at the mall. "Oh, what my mother doesn't know won't hurt her." Said Regina, winking. There was that, and the fact that the sugar wouldn't affect her as it did humans. Lucky, lucky angel, she was. "Snow White..." Regina's voice trailed off as she remembered the last time she had been at Snow White. She had seen Clive again and he had seen her for the first time since she had left. Snow White had a special place in her heart now because of that accidental encounter.

With a grin, Regina paid for her candy and turned around, leading the girl back out of the shop. "Great! Let's go sit over there and get high on sugar, which is the only kind of getting high I really condone." She said, pointing at a bench in the courtyard. Regina snickered at Kat's use of text speak in conversation, and nodded. "Regina, pleasure to meet you." This girl talked a lot, and talked fast, which amused Regina, who thought she must be one of those people who put others in a good, energetic mood just by being around. "Oh, welcome to Scarlet Oak then! I don't go to college, but I do live and work there." She smiled, handing Kat the open bag of candy after she had retrieved a handful of gummy bears for herself.

Kat could believe that this woman's mom was still around and possibly even living with her. She looked the same age as, or probably younger, than Roxy after all and she was home. Now that they weren't having semi-epic battles over whether or not being gay was wrong. "Yeah, it's a total play on words. I think it was pretty cool of Mrs. Snow to decide to go that way. Lotta people wouldn't have, but I think it's not copyright infringement since she doesn't use any images or claim affiliation." All that Kat knew about that stuff was what she'd learned in class at the end of last year. Contrary to popular belief she did know how to pay attention in class. Just because she didn't talk about it or get the best grades didn't mean that she didn't listen. Rollerblading and her blog were just way, way more important than knowing what year the Civil War had ended.

"Ohhhh, drug talk, totally not my favorite. It was a huge deal back out in Cali and we had all sorts of anti-drug propaganda shoved down our throats from elementary school up." Kat was fine with getting the adrenaline rush that came with skating and nailing a new trick or seeing that her most recent video or picture had topped a certain number of views. She wasn't interested in drugs. Kat followed along to the bench and sat down, slinging her backpack off to set it down by her feet. She was a very talkative person and now that she'd sat she practically had to sit on her hands to keep from wanting to... no that wasn't going to work, she was going to do it. Ignoring the offer of candy she reached up to fix Regina's hair. It'd probably been fine by anyone else's standards, but Kat's said that it needed a bit of a tweak and she was happy to be the one to give it. "Okay, sorry about that, but I can literally not help myself. Your hair needed to be fixed. Looks totally cool now." And with that, she reached into the candy bag to pull out some gummys for herself. Popping a few in her mouth she chewed and swallowed so that she could keep talking. "Sweet; what do you do then?"

Around, yes. Living with her? Not in the least. She had not even been down to visit, though Regina understood her mother's decision very well. There were too many bad memories of losing her husband down here for her mother to be able to stand it.

Chuckling, Regina took another gummy bear from the bag. "By now Snow White belongs to no one. I suppose not even Disney, really, not the original tale. And it would be cruel of anyone to cause the lady trouble for that, it's in her name after all!" She did like the Snows she had seen working behind the counter at the shop, all of them were very nice. Kat's aversion to drug talk made Regina laugh, and took her back to when she herself was in high school. It was all the rage back then too, especially with some famous young people dying from drug abuse at the time. "I remember it being the same way back in High School over here. I think it's a generalized, timeless drag we all have to go through. But I can't say it's not important." Now if only they made as big a deal about sexual education as they did about drug education...Unless they did already and she just didn't know. She would have to ask Clive about that, he would know.

Regina almost flinched when Kat's hand came her way, but then she just sat there, witnessing with narrow eyes what the girl was doing. "Oh! Oh, thanks. I wasn't aware it was out of place!" She smiled. This girl was definitely adorable. "I'm a waitress at Cardelinni's, the Italian restaurant. You're about to start school, right?"

"I guess that could be right." Kat didn't think much about it. Things like Disney weren't a big deal to her. She was more focused on possible sponsors and stuff like that than those other things. Disney didn't tend to be really interested in what she did. "But I don't think anyone ever has. We've been coming here for as long as I can remember and we're pretty good friends with that whole family so I'd probably have at least heard something. They've got a kid same age as me." And she didn't even think about that whole age similarity or that Otter liked to be around her as meaning that he might have a crush on her. She was too busy staring herself and totally ignoring that the guy she stared at was probably the gayest teenager in Scarlet Oak. "Way back? Please, you're trying to make yourself sound old. I've got a sister older than you." Which Kat thought because Roxy looked older than Regina and she didn't have any reason to believe that Regina wasn't as old as she looked. Which wasn't very old at all.

Kat just grinned and bobbed her head. People could react badly when she fixed their various fly-aways and stuff, but it never bothered her. She had to do it and they needed to be fixed so no one lost. Winners all around! Unless they had personal boundaries issues and if that was the case then she jut didn't ever take it into consideration. Why would she? "Not a problem, I always fix little messes like that. I am big on grooming." Kat bounced slightly in her seat before stilling while she tried to put a location to that name. "Haven't been there. My family tends to go more for the Hispanic. Dad's from Chile so you know how that goes. I think it'd be wicked to see a Chilean style restaurant open up, but it probably wouldn't do that great out here. Too bad." Kat sighed and settled back on the bench, eyes taking in nearby people to see if she could find anyone she knew. Looked like 'no'. "Just started today! First year in Scarlet Oak and it doesn't seem bad. Lot smaller than what I'm used to. I'm from out in Cali so I'm used to a ton of things always happening. Can get a little boring here." Kat talked too much and she knew that.

"Good, then, because it's a cute name that stays in your memory, and what could be better for a business than that, right?" She smiled. It amused her that Kat didn't believe she was as old as she was making herself sound like, and Regina had to chuckle and lower her head. However unlikely, it still was possible that Kat's sister was older than Regina really was, although that would have meant an epic break in conception for her parents. And a whole lot of luck, she supposed. Thinking about it, the chances of that actually happening were minimal.

She took some more sweets from one of her bags and laughed. "That's good, at least you never look less than your best, right? Grooming is very important!" With her hair, however, Regina was bound to look less than groomed sometimes. She was used to it and kind of loved it, actually. Shrugging, Regina thought about the variety of world restaurants in Scarlet Oak and around. "Yeah but they usually go for Mexican, as if you could only have one restaurant from each zone of the world. I don't know much about Chilean culture, but you don't actually eat exactly the same things as there are in Mexican cuisine, right?" Time to learn. This was why she liked being who she was, she was always learning, even with teenagers.

Regina made a face, unsure if she agreed with Kat that very little happened in Scarlet Oak. She had heard of a lot happening, her own kind's arrival included. "Still I bet more things happen now rather than before the Light of May." She pushed a loose curl back behind her ear and cleared her throat. "So, tell me, what did you think of your teachers today? The ones you met, that is?" Yes, she was trying to get info on how kids felt about Clive. She was curious!

"I guess yeah. I just remember it because my friends work there and all that." Kat really didn't get business or business angles or any of that stuff. She just let it wash right over her head. Product placement she got, sure, but that was about it. "That's right! One of my sisters, she's all just human and she doesn't quite get our obsessive habits, but what she doesn't know is that she's really almost as bad. Or worse. She spends more time than me in the bathroom every day. She just doesn't go around fixing other people's hair or clothes when they're out of place." If Kat hadn't zoned in on Regina then she'd probably have darted off a few times already to fix various twisted straps or not-quite tucked in shirts. Going to the mall with her could be a bit of a pain, she had to admit that was true. It was just way, way worse when you got her and Roxy together. Though last time she checked her sister was better about keeping her hands to herself unless she knew the other person."Noope, we don't. Got some variety and a bit more seafood since we have so much coast. It's like, way better if you ask me." Kat couldn't believe that she hadn't been asked how on earth she was Chilean since she didn't look it.

"Oh, yeah all of that. I meant more like there aren't as many stores and events and people... I'm a inline rollerblader so I'm used to all sorts of competitions and there aren't near enough out here to keep me going. I've already had to drain the pool jut to give myself a good invert." Oh, her teachers. Kat shrugged and folded her legs up underneath of her. "You know, first day I'm not really sure. A couple of the guys are cute and pretty young for teachers I thought. Like I've got Mr. Abdella for biology and he's got this broody sort of look going on, but I heard that he's got a girlfriend and she's pregnant." Secrets didn't exist when students were telepaths. "Mr. Owens for history seems cool, too. Just gotta get used to all of them I guess."

Regina had to chuckle. "You know, that tells me that maybe the obsessive thing isn't a penguin trait so much as a family one." At the bathroom thing, she just kept laughing and shook her head. "My brother had a ladies' man phase where he spent more time in front of the bathroom mirror than I did. Those were good times." Then she had moved in with Clive and that had ended, though they would playfully fight for the mirror in the morning anyway. "Mmmm seafood. I haven't had any in a long while." Years. when you worked at an Italian restaurant, even though Italian cuisine had some great seafood dishes, you mostly had the most famous stuff that was easiest to do. "I never had Chilean food but I'm going to take your word for it."

"Oh, you're right about that. And there aren't any around here but still in the State, or a State over or something?" There was something Regina couldn't do. She couldn't skate to save her life, and she had always wanted to learn. "Let me ask you something, do you think I'm too old to learn to skate now? I've always wanted to but never got around to it. And now that you mention that, I kind of want to again!"

Sighing, Regina tried not to agree effusively with Kat's assessment of the cute younger teachers, seeing as one of them was Clive and, well, he was pretty much the end all of hot guys for Regina, always had been. "Broody is always nice, I remember liking that too when I was a teenager." And who brooded better than Clive back then? No one that's who. "No one you hate, either, right? Because when you hate a teacher from the get-go it's a bitch to change your mind later."
