Soccer moms wish they were this cool
Who: Lilith and Linnea
Where: Restaurant in Ann Arbor
When: Around noon
There was one thing that Linnea always enjoyed doing before school started; other than taking her children back to school shopping and yes she viewed that as an enjoyable activity, and that was going out to lunch the day before with one of her friends. Some years it was Saundra, others it was Hannah from the theater or Lucille who was married to one of Jokull's partners, and this year it was Lilith. It was always good to spend time with other water elementals and truthfully? She needed to get away from her children, more specifically her daughters. Even more specifically, Dagmar and Satu... with Satu being the primary offender. Her daughter had been so sweet to buy her that little jewelry case, but that sweetness had been tempered by the next day. It seemed as though Satu was genuinely incapable of maintaining anything approaching 'normal' or 'well-behaved' for longer than two days recently. Linnea wanted to blame it on the onset of puberty, but so far as she recalled that had not made Dagmar any worse. She had stopped drawing any comparisons between those two and Kajsa long ago, even before she had known about the demonic blood, and now that she knew about that thanks to Nikita the differences between them made all the more sense. Oh she still loved them every bit as much, they were not responsible for what Jokull had passed onto them, but there was no denying that they had that extra bit of difficultly in everything they did. Satu more than Dagmar. Linnea did not want to admit it even inside of her own mind, but she knew that Satu was worse. Satu was more like Leif even without the added influence of Jokull.
No, today she was not thinking about that. Today she was going to go and enjoy a pleasant lunch with Lilith and even if they ended up talking about the children it did not matter because it would not be about those subjects that Satu kept insisting on bringing up. Linnea told herself it was just because the girl was feeling under the weather, as she herself also was, and the further away that she got from the house the more that she believed it to be true. She had even left Strike at home. The familiar was a soothing presence, true, but he was also a snake and no matter how small he was there was nowhere on her outfit that he could hide without leaving her with a strangely shaped bump she would not want to explain to anyone. And that included her purse. So he was left at home with the others in the vague hope that he would keep a lid on the children should they decide to get up to anything. Which was very unlikely since they at least seemed to respect the house and besides, Valterri was out at hockey try-outs to earn his spot back while Satu had softball practice and Dagmar... Linnea did not know what Dagmar or Kajsa were getting up to. She might ask if she saw them later. Or she might not. It would probably be better if she did not because her children had a terrible habit of overreaction. One that, had he been present, Strike would have reminded her she did too when she was not being the exact opposite.
The drive could have been longer and Linnea would not have minded the extra silence that she would have been granted because of it. Only that was not the case and she had just parked. For a moment she debated just sitting in the car for awhile before subjecting herself to the rest of the world again. A moment that vanished when she noticed that it was the time she had agreed to meet Lilith and then that that was Lilith's car. It seemed that the other elemental had beaten her here. Linnea allowed herself another half minute before sliding out of the car to go inside. When asked if she had a reservation she just motioned to where she could see Lilith before stepping around and going to that table. Her smile came as easily as always as she slid into the empty chair. "Good afternoon, Lilith, you look well." Already she was reaching for the menu and debating with herself over what she would have, momentarily disappointed that she had to do without even a glass of wine.
