I get by with a little help...
Who: Edie and Alanna
Where: UoM Hospital
When: Late Evening
The entire floor was silent. The familiar chatter and hustle of staff members and patients had disappeared as the sun went down. Edie and the night nurse left in charge were the only ones left to watch over the sleeping patients during the late hours of the night and on into the morning. Through the silence, she could hear the hum of machines running and the soft rhythmic beeps that let her know everything was as it should be. She didn't talk much to Gloria, the older nurse she worked with. Edie knew the woman needed the work, but didn't have the patience to keep daytime hours anymore. She also knew that Gloria often ducked into the doctors on-call room to sleep through the night, knowing that Edie was knowledgeable to handle anything that could go wrong. Had she not preferred things exactly as they were, Edie may have cared enough to report her, but as she saw it Gloria's apathy for her duties gave Edie the perfect chance to do what she needed to. She was hungry. If Eddie could have she would have pushed herself longer, but she needed blood and there was no avoiding it. Gathering the files that she had collected at the nurse's desk, Edie gave them a quick flip through. Eight, eight files. Eight patients currently on the floor. Her process was a fairly simple one. She would go through each of the patient's files, checking each for their reason for admittance and current condition. More importantly, Edie checked the patients for blood type. The first five patients were a bust. None of their blood types matched the B positive that Edie needed. In fact as she finished looking over the last three, Edie found that none of them did. The closest of them all was a young girl that had been brought in only three days ago. Faulmn, Alanna. B negative. "Hmmm..." Edie read over what seemed to be the most important note in her file: The girl was a Were. Despite eighty years as a vampire, Edie had had no interaction with any other supernaturals. She knew of their existence, but that was as far as it went. She had never tasted anything non-human and a sick curiosity rose in her if Alanna would taste differently. Nothing else in her chart noted that there was anything to worry about; she was still weak from malnourishment, but otherwise was on the road to recovery. Edie checked her watch. Though she knew without looking that she would have plenty of time to feed, making note of the time gave her peace of mind. Her tennis shoes made soft taps on the tile floor as she walked the hallway to the patient's room. Carefully, Edie turned the handle and entered the room as quietly as possible. Her nose had caught the scent of something curious, but it wasn't until she stepped into the room that it hit her full force. The redhead laying in the hospital bed reeked of non-human. "Alanna?" Edie kept her voice quiet in case she had been sleeping. She would prefer the girl to be unconscious, but if forced, she was equipped to handle the situation as it came. "I need to take a few samples." |
