It came from the sky!
Who: Selphie and Rikku (NPC'd)
Where: Selphie's backyard
When: afternoon
It had been a little while since Selphie had just taken the whole day to be outside, playing in the dirt. Quite literally, Selphie was in the backyard, trying to make things grow, and enjoying the slight tingling sensation she always felt in her hands if she focused her powers down into her fingertips. The little plant she was working with was in fact a dandy-lion, but Selphie didn't really care if it was considered a weed. It was still a living, growing thing, and she was working to prolong its life with her magic. It bloomed all of a sudden and its bright yellow flower made the elemental giggle. She could spend hours out here with the plants, and she had been outside since just after breakfast. Time flew by every time she was practicing and she didn't mind in the slightest. The only things out here were the plants and the bugs.
And a very determined flying squirrel.
Breaking her out of her reverie, Selphie heard a strange whoosing sound and then something hit her on her back. Before she could stop herself, Selphie screamed aloud, a high, frightened sound. She ducked and covered her head, laying herself flat against the ground to protect herself. She felt tiny little claws in her shirt and she screamed again, reaching behind her to try to knock whatever it was off of her. Her hand connected with something furry, and it skittered away.
'Hey, hey! No, no screaming! Shhhhhh! I just wanted to say hi! Hi! The voice inside Selphie's head was high pitched and...female. And inside her head. Coming back up to a seated position, Selphie turned this way and that, trying to see just what was talking to her. She finally spied a little grey thing hiding behind a bush. It hopped out when it saw the elemental looking at it, and its tail twitched. 'No more screaming, okay? Promise? Okay! I'm Rikku, and you're mine. My Selphie. Okay? Good!' The squirrel ran up to her and jumped into her lap, bouncing and jumping in excitement. Selphie's eyes had widened and gotten progressively wider since the little squirrel had started talking.
"Uhm. Yours?" The squirrel stopped jumping to climb up so she was close to Selphie's face. 'My elemental, okay? I help you, when I'm close you're stronger. I'm your familiar! Okay?' Selphie couldn't help but burst out laughing. Rikku talked so fast, she sounded like a little cartoon character on a television show. 'Hey, hey! Not a cartoon, I'm a real squirrel. A flying squirrel! See?' The little grey ball of energy jumped off Selphie's lap and ran up the nearest tree, only to launch herself off the trunk and glide over to land on Selphie's shoulder. Once there, Rikku grabbed a strand of Selphie's hair and tugged it gently. 'See? See? I'm sorry I scared you, I was just excited. I found you!' She snuggled her furry little face into Selphie's hair and the elemental giggled again. She reached up gently and pet the soft fur of the squirrel, smiling.
The back door burst open and Cid stood in the doorway, his face red. Doubtless he'd thought that Selphie was in some sort of danger, since she'd screamed, and Selphie laughed at the look on her father's face. "Sorry, daddy." He stood there, looking back and forth between Selphie and the little squirrel on her shoulder. "Thought you were hurt," came his grunted reply. Selphie shook her head, smiling. "Nope, just got startled. This is Rikku! She's my familiar! Isn't that awesome?" Rikku made a chittering sound on her shoulder. 'Sorry, sorry! I was only saying hi! I keep Selphie safe, now. Okay? Okay!' Cid rolled his eyes and went back inside, closing the door much more quietly than he'd opened it. Craning her neck to look at the little rodent on her shoulder, Selphie laughed. "No more scaring people, okay? My dad might make you into a roast squirrel." Rikku immediately hid herself in Selphie's hair. 'No, no! No burnt Rikku, no! I won't be scary anymore, okay? Okay!'
Rolling her eyes, Selphie got to her feet and went inside, on a mission to make a place in her room for her new familiar to sleep. Rikku hid in her hair for the rest of the day, still worried about the fiery wrath of Cid.
