Friday 3pm, Simon Belgrave
Once his note had been returned, Thomas hadn't seen any sense in waiting around. After all, Mr. Belgrave had indicated a willingness to receive him on Friday afternoon, and 3 was a respectable time to call. It also meant that he would have the weekend clear to make the final arrangements to actually open his store on Monday morning.

Hoping that Mr. Belgrave would not be offended by his promptness, he arrived a little before three, and left his card at the front desk to be conveyed to Mr. Belgrave to announce his arrival, taking the chance to bespeak the services of one of the hotel's chaperones for their meeting at the same time. Then, flapping the tails of his coat neatly aside, took a seat on one of the benches in the lobby, and awaited the gentleman's convenience.

Thomas nodded, still smiling, and inclined his head again. "Forgive me. Books are my life. I'm told I can be quite, quite dull on the subject. Is this the first time you have had your own shop?"

"Nonsense. If you have a passion for something, it's never dull." He nodded, then. "The first time. I've been looking forward to it since I accepted Mr. LeChance's invitation."

"And is your shop quite fitted and ready to open? I know it has taken me a good while to complete furnishing my own."

"It's. Nearly there," he hedged after thinking about it for a second. "I'll have to tell myself it's finished and ready eventually, at least."

Thomas laughed. "Yes, I'm familiar with the thought. I shall be spending this weekend changing indexing systems until Monday morning, I'm sure."

Simon arched an eyebrow. "If I can be of some assistance...?"

Well, that was unexpected. Far from unwelcome, but unexpected. "Thank you," Thomas said simply. "It's very kind of you to offer, but I wouldn't want to take you away from your own preparations. Although, if you were walking near the market place on Monday morning, perhaps you would care to take tea with me again?"

And that was just as unexpected. The smile was sudden and sincere. "I just might find myself headed that way on Monday morning."

"If you do, I would be most pleased to see you." Thomas smiled back, warm and pleased at Mr. Belgrave's smile and the genuine intent he could see beyond it. "For now, however, I must not outstay my welcome."

Simon almost protested that he hadn't outstayed, but minded himself and stood again. Once Thomas had, he offered his hand again. "Thank you, again, for calling on me. I enjoyed talking with you very much."

Taking Mr. Belgrave's hand, Thomas shook it firmly. "Thank you for receiving me, Mr. Belgrave. It has truly been a pleasure to meet you."

He smiled warmly. "The pleasure has been mine as well." He shook the chaperone's hand in turn and saw them both back to the front door of the hotel.

On reaching the door, Thomas bowed to both Mr. Belgrave and to Ms. Hastings, settled his hat on his head, and took his leave of them both, step lighter as he walked back to his shop.
