Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Kendra and Phoenix
What: Mayhem after dark
Where: Greenhouse
When: Nighttime
Rating: PG-13

Kendra had, of course, paid no heed to Phoenix's warnings about going out alone at night. She had talked herself into believing that the two attacks or incidents or whatever they were Becken's sounded more like he was having a panic attack if anything. It could have been a terrible prank. Rumor had it that Zara's had been a werewolf attack, and Jacob Wood's... well, she wasn't entirely sure about that, but he was still alive so that must have meant something right? Maybe it had just been a dog and not the Grim. It was possible, right?

Either way, Kendra had eased herself back into a comfort zone and was back to her later visits to the greenhouse to check on her moonflower. The plant, which had grown at an extraordinarily rapid rate early in its life was now coated in gorgeous white blossoms that only bloomed at night. The careful measurements and notes taken would be important to future herbologists, or so she liked to think. The extra attention appeared to have very drastic effects on the plant, and if this was the case with other plants, it could make a huge difference in the availability of moonflower for potions and powders and all sorts of things.

As she closed the door of the greenhouse she was quick to notice a red plant in the corner. It's inviting petals were enough to earn anyone's interest, and its faint pleasant odor made her undeniably curious as to what scent the flower bore, but she quickly shook her head and focused her attention elsewhere. She knew no good would come out of that flower, and she focused instead on removing her layers and fishing out her wand to begin her measurements.

Kendra sighed as Phoenix took a deep breath, instantly recoiling from her. His back turned to her, and she bit down on her lip as he blurted out apology after apology. "Phoenix..." she said softly, moving to place a gentle hand on his shoulder. "You don't... have to apologize." She managed to refrain from blurting out that she had liked what he had done, that it was a side of him she would love to see more often and instead kept on a force smile. "Anyone else would have done the same thing." Actually, most would have done considerably worse. She wondered if that said anything about Phoenix.

"It wasn't... bad," she added with a nervous laugh. "Really."

Phoenix was silently berating himself for acting so inappropriately around Kendra, even though he knew well that he was influenced by some sort of spell from the red plant before. He guessed he'd probably scared her off for good, what with the indecent way he'd treated her- asking for kisses! What was he thinking?

He almost recoiled when she touched him, but didn't. Despite the words she'd said that were meant to perhaps comfort him, he didn't feel the least bit fine about the situation. "I don't think how you can look at me the same way. That... that was not me, Kendra." A sigh. "Not me at all..."

Okay, so maybe that hurt a little. Kendra liked to think that Phoenix was at least moderately interested in her, that he would like to kiss her the way she wanted to kiss him. Hearing that it was clearly not the case was enough to make her swallow thicky, glad he wasn't facing her for the moment. "You think I view you differently? No, of course not," she replied weakly, letting her hand slip from his shoulder to fall uneasily at her side. "I know it wasn't you."

It wasn't as if he didn't want to kiss her. She was beautiful in more ways than one, so how could he not want her in that way? But the manner in which he'd advanced her before was embarrassing. Asking, begging for it like some desperate animal. Phoenix knew that if he was going to make that move, it would be something completely different...

He turned to face her then, lookign gravely apologetic. "It really wasn't." he said, unaware that she had mistook the meaning of his words. "I would never act like that around you. I respect you. Please know that..."

His words were just rubbing salt in the wound, and Kendra nodded, her tight-lipped smile still in place. "I know, Phoenix. I've read plenty enough about that plant to understand its effect on people. It creates a blinding attraction to whomever you first lay eyes on. It makes you do... crazy things. That's why I made you smell this." She held up the petite brown plant. "Painfully pungent to those under the spell of its counterpart. Scentless to those who aren't."

She set the plant down and took the opportunity to not have to look at him as she headed back to her moonflower. "You shouldn't be embarrassed. It's stronger than many love potions."

Phoenix had realized that what she had explained was what had happened. It was strange, he found, to be under the influence of a spell and even after it had worn off, he was still completely aware of what had happened to him. What did not miss his notice however, was the fact that her expresssion seemed unsatisfied. Could she still be upset with him?

"I said I'm sorry." he said, when she tended to her plants again. "You seem mad, still. Tell me what I need to do so you'll forgive me sincerely, and I guarantee you I'll do it..."

Kendra turned to look at him, quill in hand. "I'm not mad," she assured him. "I forgive you, even though I don't honestly believe there's anything to forgive in the first place." She ran a hand through her blonde waves. She wasn't angry, in truth, just... disappointed, confused maybe. She wasn't sure what to think, if she'd misread all the signs.

He had seemed so interested, especially that night at the ball, dancing so close with her. It didn't make sense. But Phoenix, she supposed, wasn't exactly you're typical male. "...What are you doing here anyway?" she asked, in hopes of changing the subject. "...In your slippers?"

Phoenix made to stand before her, hands in his pockets as he watched her. Though she might say she did forgive him, her actions spoke otherwise. She couldn't look at him directly, and he hadn't seen a flash of that gorgeous smile since the incident...

At the other's question, he smiled a little. "I came here for you." he admitted, his tone soft. "It was apparent that you were not going to take my advice over the journals. I just... had to make sure your safe."

He had to make sure she was safe? Was that the sot of thing people who were just friends did for each other? She supposed so, though she wasn't entirely sure she would run off with her slippers on to check on one of her room mates in the middle of the night.

"You don't have to do that," she told him with a sheepish smile.

"I know." was the only thing he'd said. He knew he didn't have to run down the halls in the middle of the night to the greenhouse just so he could check on her, but he knew at the same time that he wouldn't have been able to get a bit of sleep if he didn't. In fact, if any sort of harm had come to her, he would probably blame himself.

"Would it be alright if I waited for you?" he asked, summoning on of the tall stools and taking a seat. "I'll walk you to your dormitories after you're done."

Having Phoenix sitting there meant she wasn't exactly going to be able to dump her usual load of problems on her moonflower. It was theraputic to get those things out in the open, even if no one was really listening. Just to vent and say how she was feeling out loud made her feel better. Phoenix had even suggested the conversation she had with the plant might be aiding to its large size. She wasn't about to tell him no, however, both because she had a feeling he would sit outside and wait being as stubborn as he was and because she didn't honestly want him to go, regardless of how he did or did not feel about her- a subject which was confusing her greatly. "Sure."

She turned back to the plant and took the remaining measurements. Once she had nothing left to distract her, she set her wand down on the table, staring at the numbers blankly for a moment, before she slowly turned to look at him. "If you didn't feel an obligation to come," she said gently. "Why did you?"

Phoenix relaxed a fracion when the other agreed that he took her back to her dormitories. He knew seeing her, and making sure she's safe now would not be suffice. If he could take her to her room, he would.

At her question, his gaze landed on her, eyes like warm pools of mercury that gave off nothing that he was feeling. "Your fault." he said. "If you'd only agreed to listen to me, we would both be safely in bed at the moment..."

Kendra hated that about him, that he could look at her and not give away a single hint about what he really meant, about how he was really feeling. As someone who wore her heart on her sleeve without really meaning to, it was frustrating to try and guess what was going on in that complicated head of his. "But you already said you didn't have to come," she argued, taking a step toward him. "You could've stayed in bed."

Phoenix's expression remianed as it was, even when she started to argue. He watched her take a step towards him, not moving a muscle as she did so. "Yes, I did." he said. "And I could have. But I chose not to." His gaze on her narrowed. "What are you trying to get me to say?"

Kendra bit her lip as his eyes narrowed. Why did she suddenly feel as if this were a now or never sort of thing? "I'm trying to get you to say..." She sighed. "If you... care... about me? In a... more than friends sort of way?" Her words came out even more awkwardly than she felt, and she let out another sigh of frustration as she ran a nervous hand through her hair. "I just... get a lot of mixed signals from you? And I guess I just want to know if I'm making a fool out of myself or not."

He looked at her for seemed like an eternty, but eventually, a smile punched through his features. "Kendra..." he started, crossing his arms. "If I had not cared at all, do you really think I would be here?" he asked. "Would I even bother trying to stop you from leaving your dorms at these ungodly hours at all if I didn't?" He sighed, shoulders slumping in the slightest. "I take fault in the fact that you're... unable to read me. I have been told I tend to do that, so I apologize. But since you mentioned it, I have to make it clear that no, you're not making a fool of yourself. Never..."

"Is that all that's plaguing your mind?"

Kendra felt as if a big heaping pile of relief had been dropped upon her shoulders, and she could feel her knees give slightly under it. Then again, that may have been from the smile he tossed her way. That gentle curve of his lips tended to have that effect on her. "...Really?" she asked as she stepped closer to him, looking up at him with big, blue eyes. "Are you sure?"

"Really." Phoenix assured her, keeping the smile on his lips after he'd seen how she'd positively responded to it. "I wouldn't lie. I see no benefit in it." He waited in anticipation when she started to move closer to him, and wondered how close she was actually planning to get. "Do you doubt me?"

Kendra couldn't help but feel giddy at this reassurance. Phoenix Malfoy cared for her, cared enough to haul his beautiful butt out of bed and come make sure she was alright in the middle of the night, slippers and all. It was all she could do to keep from jumping up and down. "I... care about you, too," she told him as she closed the distance between them. "If that wasn't... painfully obvious already." She offered a sheepish smile.

Phoenix felt immense happiness when he'd heard the reassurance he hadn't asked for, liking the fact that she seemed to know he wanted to hear that from her, too, even though he'd not voiced it out. His smiled grew wider in response to her words, and still kept his eyes on her as she advanced. "I'm glad." he said. "I like hearing it. I would never discourage you from being honest with me. You can be assured that I will be the same, even though I do not often voice out my thoughts..."

Kendra smiled as she reached up to adjust the his robe around his neck, smoothing out the area of crumpled fabric until it looked befitting of him. "You must have been freezing walking over here," she said, knowing that though it was warm and toasty in the greenhouse, it was still chilly outside.

Phoenix's head lowered as he followed her had as they reached out for him. He stiffened a little as an initial reaction, but relaxed afer a deep breath. "I hardly noticed." he admitted, though tops of his cheeks were stained with light pink. After a minute, he looked up to look into her eyes, noticing now only how close they really were but wasn't frightened by their proximity at all. He circled his hand loosely around her wrist, letting his fingers draw lines on her skin. "Worried?"

Kendra's hands paused as she felt his wrap loosely around her wrist, her own cheeks hue pinkening as she met his gaze with a small smile. "I... wouldn't want you to catch a cold," she explained, her voice coming out quieter than expected. His fingers were distracting, his eyes were distracting, Merlin, he was distracting! Everything about him drew her in, from his bleach-blonde hair, to the firm slopes and lines of his face, to the gentle curves of his lips.

Phoenix felt their bodies move towards each others, and this left him surprised at himself for wanting it too. Usually, he recoiled at the thought of closeness, of intimacy. But now, with having Kendra in the warm safety of the greenhouse, it seemed as if nothing was wrong with it. Nothing could hurt then, see them. And there was the fact that he himself wanted her close to him...

"I'm fine." he assured her, resting one of his hands on her hip. "Are you... done with your flowers?" he asked.

Kendra was caught off guard by his ease as well. The closest they had come to being so intimate and close had been at the dance, and she hardly though that counted as he had attended probably a hundred balls in his life and danced the same way, just as close with a thousand other girls. This was different. This was the middle of the night in her greenhouse... in his slippers with his hands resting gently on her hips.

"Yes," she breathed out, cheeks flushing slightly at the sound of her voice. There was no hope in denying it now. Kendra desperately wanted her lips on those of Phoenix Malfoy. Hell, she wanted everything of his on everything of hers, but she had learned the hard way that taking things too quickly with Phoenix meant she got a rigid board reaction that was just as harsh as any words might have been.

Kiss me her own voice begged in her head as she gazed up at him. Kiss me, kiss me, kiss me.
