Who: Isabella Weasley and Ben Goyle
Where: Bar
When: Evening
What: An unlikely savior!
Rating: Pg-13
Status: Complete

It wasn’t a very common occurrence for Isabella Weasley to get lost, but when she did get lost, she really got lost. She had become rather absorbed in her novel, a fantastic tale of chivalry and romance, and with her nose buried inside it, she hadn’t even realized she had taken the wrong turn until it was far too late. When she finally willed herself to lower the book- mostly because it was getting dark and difficult to read- Isabella didn’t recognize a single street name, a single building, a single landmark. After wandering aimlessly for a good thirty minutes, she finally gave up and entered the closest building that had its lights on.

She was immediately caught off guard by the smell of the place as she pushed open the door. It was a bar, filled with men and a few women of all sorts of shapes and sizes, some attractive, some not so much, but they all had one thing in common, and that was a drink in their hands. Alcohol had always made Isabella a bit uneasy. She’d never tried it herself, mostly because she didn’t want her parents to somehow find out, but she knew the sort of effects it had on people.

The girl stuck out like a sore thumb as she slowly made her way toward the bar. While everyone else seemed laid-back and cheery, Isabella was tense and clearly ill-at-ease. They were loud, and she was quiet as a mouse until she finally reached her destination, yet she could not go unnoticed. A large, much older man seated on a stool next to her turned and offered a too-large smile. “Hello there.”

Isabella jolted and forced herself to give a nervous smile in return. “Uh, hello. Hi.” She turned back to ask the bartender where on Earth she was, but the moment her lips parted, she was interrupted again.

“What’s your name?” The same man was eyeing her with that odd grin of his.

“Er- Isabella,” she answered weakly.

“That is a bee-yoo-" His sentiments were interrupted by a hiccup and a chuckle. “A bee-yoo-tih-fuhl name, lass.”

“…Thanks?”

Isabella swallowed nervously at his words. Part of her wanted to scream out that yes, she was not only a Weasley, which enough in itself to send a Goyle running, but she was the sister of Kaida Weasley, who had clobbered Elena in a quidditch match. But the more rational part of her reminded herself that those were two glaring strikes against her, not to mention her already shy, bookish tendencies that were enough to keep most blokes away.

But she couldn't just lie to him. She couldn't tell him that she wans't hiding something from him like she was. It was one thing to avoid the truth; it was another thing entirely to bend it.

"What if I told you it's... better to keep it hidden?"

She kept beating around the bush, and he was kind of getting annoyed. She was frustrating, he had never found himself wanting to know a secret so badly. Usually he just let it roll off his back and ignored it, but this he couldn't. "What does that even mean?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "What are you hiding?"

Isabella was about to admit it. She was about to confess everything and tell him that he never would have talked to her if he knew who she really was. She bit her lip for a moment, and her lips parted to spill the truth, but instead, what came out was, "Have you read this book?"

She withdrew it from her bag. "I bought it today. I was reading it when I got lost."

Ben blinked a few times. What came out of her mouth definitely was not expected. By the look on her face and her pause, he figured it was about to come out. He had surprised himself, too, becaus ehe hadn't expected her to admit it. He wanted her to, but also, he was having fun chasing this secret. Maybe he didn't really want to know? Well, he did. It was still fun to watch her squirm, but it was also eating him up.

He slowed down, looking over at her. "Have I read a book?" he asked, peering at it like it was a foreign object. "I don't read."

Isabella's eyes widened. "You don't read?" she asked incredulously. How could someone not read? Isabella spent a large amount of her free time with her nose in a book. Reading was a huge part of her life.

She reached into her bag and pulled out another, clearly more worn book that had clearly been read numerous time. "You should read this one," she said with a small smile. "It's my favorite."

Ben made a ridiculous face at her. "Do I look like someone that reads?" he asked, as if she was accusing him of the most ridiculous, heinous crime. Ben Goyle did not read. He did not do homework, he did not to classwork, he never paid attention, and he barely passed his exams. He did not spend free time reading, or even required time reading. He probably had never finished an entire book. Ever. In his life.

He snatched the book that she was holding up then, holding it in his hands as if it was diseased. "What the hell is it about?"

"I didn't realize there was a certain way someone had to look in order to read," she answered, blinking blankly at him. From anyone else, it might have been a snappy comeback, but coming from Isabella it was a quiet, hesitant statement.

She flinched as he snatched the book away from her. "A lot of things," she replied. "But mostly... it's a journey."

"I ahng out in places like that," he said, pointing back in the direction that they had come from, where the bar had been. "And believe me, there is a certain way. I just don't look it."

Examining the book, he opened it for a moment, then closed it. "I have better things to do than read." Which was..basically a lie. Really, what did Ben have to do? He just didn't like to read.

"Oh." She took the book back from him, carefully replacing it in her bag. "That's alright. I suppose I relate a lot more to the characters than you would." Like the main character, Isabella was still struggling to figure out who she was. Ben seemed so sure of himself that he'd probably find the notion laughable.

Ben raised an eyebrow again. Relating to characters? They were just that..characters. They weren't even real. "What's the fun in reading something that isn't even real? And usually wont even happen." He shrugged. He thought it was stupid. And although Ben seemed very sure of himself, he truely wasn't. He just acted the way he did so that no one would talk to him. He shut people out because he didn't know how to react to people. He really didn't know who he was, at all. Not that he realized that.

Isabella couldn't help but smile slightly as she answered him. "I've found that I tend to enjoy literature's realities a lot more than my own," she explained. And maybe that was silly, but it was entirely too true. In literature, she and Ben's situation would have worked itself out through a dramatic one hundred pages or so of turmoil and frustration and- she tried to hold back a blush at the thought- passion. Looking up at him now, Isabella had no doubt things would not end nearly as well for her.

Ben just stared at her blankly. This was a very odd girl, that was for sure. He had never met somenoe like her. or at least, he might have, but he never would have spoken to them to get to know them well enough. Really, he didn't even know why he was speaking to her as much as he was. Two meetings, and although she was very obviously hiding something (or a few somethings) from him, he knew a lot. He had never gotten close enough to another girl to learn about her. "But what is so exciting about some book? It's just that..a book. They're boring."

Isabella sighed softly. "Maybe it's just writing on paper to you, but it isn't to me. I don't see words; I see people and feelings and stories." She shrugged her shoulders and readjusted her bag. "It's only boring if you tell yourself it is. At least, I think so."

She really was odd, but she was also intruiging. The way she felt about books was nothing like Ben felt about...well, anything. He had no passion, no goals, no drive. He didn't love anything, or care strongly about any sort of subject or an object or something that he had learned. He never felt more than annoyed or bitter, he didn't really..enjoy. "That's..." he started, but he couldn't find a word to end that. He shrugged again. "I don't know. I don't think I ever felt that way about something."

She felt a bizarre urge to touch him then, to reach out and take his hand because he had finally, perhaps without even realizing it, opened up a bit to her and told her something about himself. But Isabella was far too shy to do anything of the sort, and she shifted her hands into her coat pockets instead. "You will eventually," she said with a small smile.

Ben didn't like the way the girl seemed to be getting close to him. he was noticing it more and more, the way he felt about her after only two meetings, the way he was driving himself mad trying to figure her out. She seemed to be doing the same to him, and he was losing his guard, the one he had worked so hard ot put up in the first place. "What is that supposed to mean?" he asked defensively.

She was caught off guard by his defensive retort. She hadn't attacked him, not in the slighest, but he was acting like she was... insulting him? Manipulating him? Isabella couldn't manipulate someone if she tried. "Just that you'll find something like that some day," she answered slowly. "Everyone does, something they really care about."

"Oh," he stated, lifting his hand to run over his hair. "Well, whatever," he said. Why did she always have to say things like that. Elena did the same thing. Girls were so complicated and mysterious. What she said, though, made him think for a second. He really didn't have anything that he really cared about. His sister, sure, but even that he was more passive at.

"I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable," she said apologetically. "We can talk about something else." So long as that something else didn't involve her last name or anything that happened to give away her 'secret identity'.

"You didn't make me uncomfortable," he said quickly, shaking his head, "I don't get uncomfortable." It was true. He made others feel uncomfortable. But changing the subject was a good idea, he had no lcu what eh was talking about, and he hated talking about himself. "We're going to school soon," he offered, not exactly the best subject, but it was something.

Isabella smiled. "Yes, we are." Isabella didn't mind going back to school. She loved learning, and school provided that opportunity as well as the chance to socialize with all the friends who went their own ways over the summer. Sure, summer was freedom and leisure, but with Isabella being who she was, she thought school was fun.

"Are you excited? It's your last year!"

Ben just raised a brow and let out a snicker. "Not really," he said, amused at how excited she was about it. "Just excited I get to leave the wretched place." Not that he knew what he was doing afterwards. It was a lose/lose situation for Ben. He hated school, and everything about it, class work, Quidditch, rules, learning. He also hated home. So being at home, being at school, nothing satisfied him, because neither was an escape.

"Wretched? You really hate school?" Hadn't he said he hated home, too? He hated school and he hated home? Was there nowhere he felt comfortable? Her eyes softened at this realization, but she didn't dare say anything about it, and she curled her hands inside of her pockets to fight back that pull to take his hand again.

"Of course I hate school," he answered, making a face it that was rather obvious.he had made that clear, why wouldn't he hate actool? "There's no point in it, for me at least. But at at least I'm not at home." He shrugged.

"You don't have any subjects you enjoy, even?" she asked, brows furrowing. She loved Care of Magical Creatures in particular. This was convenient, seeing as she wanted a career as a dragon keeper. "I mean, if you look past the work you have to put into it, isn't there a class you find interesting?"
