Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Isabella Weasley and Ben Goyle
Where: Bar
When: Evening
What: An unlikely savior!
Rating: Pg-13
Status: Complete

It wasn’t a very common occurrence for Isabella Weasley to get lost, but when she did get lost, she really got lost. She had become rather absorbed in her novel, a fantastic tale of chivalry and romance, and with her nose buried inside it, she hadn’t even realized she had taken the wrong turn until it was far too late. When she finally willed herself to lower the book- mostly because it was getting dark and difficult to read- Isabella didn’t recognize a single street name, a single building, a single landmark. After wandering aimlessly for a good thirty minutes, she finally gave up and entered the closest building that had its lights on.

She was immediately caught off guard by the smell of the place as she pushed open the door. It was a bar, filled with men and a few women of all sorts of shapes and sizes, some attractive, some not so much, but they all had one thing in common, and that was a drink in their hands. Alcohol had always made Isabella a bit uneasy. She’d never tried it herself, mostly because she didn’t want her parents to somehow find out, but she knew the sort of effects it had on people.

The girl stuck out like a sore thumb as she slowly made her way toward the bar. While everyone else seemed laid-back and cheery, Isabella was tense and clearly ill-at-ease. They were loud, and she was quiet as a mouse until she finally reached her destination, yet she could not go unnoticed. A large, much older man seated on a stool next to her turned and offered a too-large smile. “Hello there.”

Isabella jolted and forced herself to give a nervous smile in return. “Uh, hello. Hi.” She turned back to ask the bartender where on Earth she was, but the moment her lips parted, she was interrupted again.

“What’s your name?” The same man was eyeing her with that odd grin of his.

“Er- Isabella,” she answered weakly.

“That is a bee-yoo-" His sentiments were interrupted by a hiccup and a chuckle. “A bee-yoo-tih-fuhl name, lass.”

“…Thanks?”

Ben never did much. If he wasn't at home sleeping or stealing some sort of alcohol from his father's liquor cabinet, he was being as far away from the house as possible. He hated being there, not that he really had any reason to be there. Or anywhere else, for that matter. So he spent most of the time in pubs, now that he could, or just wandering about.

It was a particularly warm day, and Ben was feeling antsy. So he left his house and found himself in a bar. The seemedto now him there, so they didn't give him any problems, and he sat on a barstool all the way in the back of the bar, as far away from the front door as possible. He was off the corner by himself, sipping at a drink and staring at the wall. He had a few things on his mind, but really, he just liked the silence. Sometimes Ben liked causing trouble, but most of the time he would just rather the quiet. Not having someone scold him or tell him he could be better or call him names for not doing anything with his life. He didn't have to answer to anyone. He just had his alcohol.

He was only about a drink deep when he was pulled out of his silence and noticed something at the other end of the bar. Squinting through the dim light, he noticed one guy that had been there since Ben had arrived talking to a much younger girl. He almost made a comment, about the girl being completely out of his leauge, when he noticed just who the girl was. He widened his eyes, staring at her face. It had to be here. There was no way that there was another girl that looked like her, she was far too unique. And he got an odd feeling in his stomach when he looked at her.

For a moment, he thought the guy was harassing her, and he was about to charge to the other end of the bar. But Ben caught himself, taking a sip of his drink before he set it back on top of the wooden bartop and slid off his stool. Walking over from the other side of the bar, Ben came up alongside Isabella.

"Bella, I was waiting for you," he said, not even sure where this clever stunt was coming from. "Come on, babe, let's go or we're going to be late." He took her hand, turning to shoot a look at the guy. He was much larger. Ben would get his ass kicked. But he also had the power of the wand. If he was lucky, the other guy would be too drunk to even think of pulling his wand out.

Isabella had been in the midst of trying to awkwardly avoid eye contact with the man next to her whilst attempting to get the bartenders attention when Benjamin had suddenly appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Before she knew what was happening, he was calling her ‘babe’ and her hand was in his. She felt her cheeks heat up at the contact. Holding hands had always seemed rather intimate to her, and even if she knew that he was only doing it for her sake, it still made her stomach flip.

“Uh- o…kay,” she answered awkwardly. Isabella was not a talented liar by any means.

But as she turned to go, she suddenly felt her free hand in another, larger grasp. The man at the bar had latched on, and she hesitated as she quickly glanced from Ben to the larger man who she was fairly certain was named Bill. He didn’t seem anything like her uncle, though, which was rather unfortunate. “Erm. Excuse me,” she said softly. “I have to go.”

Isabella had never been in a situation like this. She had one bloke attached to one arm, and another bloke attached to the other. She could only hope they weren’t going to pull. Tug-of-war didn’t sound like a particularly good option at the moment.

Be was ready just to pull her away and right out of that bar, abandoning his drink (which he had already paid for) and the entire idea of being at the bar, just to get her out of there. Really, he had no clue why, or where this was coming from. The only person he would ever do something like this for was his sister. He didn't normally do this for girls. Especially not one that he had met once before, and since then, he had some reason, kept her on his mind.

Except the other guy had different plans. He latched onto Isabella. "Where ya' goin'?" he asked, narrowing his eyes. Ben's hand crept towards his pocket where his wand was safely hidden, just in case. He took a step closer to the man. "Appointment," he answered, taking her other hand and pulling it from his grasp, easily, as not to hurt her. "We'll be back," he lied.

The man hesitated for a moment, obviously too drunk to fight back. Ben took that opportunity to pull Isabella behind him. "We're going now." Grabbing her hand once again, he yanked her out of the bar. People were staring at them, and the man shouted something as they left, but Ben kept going, right out of the doors into the sunlight.

He had to squint, but he kept going, pulling her alongside him. "What in the bloody hell were you doing in there?!" he asked.

Bella's eyes were wide as she watched the ease with which Benjamin lied about where they were going, the fact that they were coming back. His face gave nothing away, not that it really mattered with how inebriated the older man seemed to be. Isabella wondered if that was because he had so much practice. She hoped not.

She flinched as he yanked her out, not out of pain but because of the harshness of his action and the crude yelling coming from the man as they exited. She could swear everyone in the entire establishment was staring at them as the left, and Isabella had never been particularly fond of being the center of attention, let alone for negative reasons.

"I-" She hurried to keep moving with him. "I got lost. I didn't know what it was. I just wanted to ask for directions." She didn't point out the fact that he was in there, and that she didn't think he belonged with that crowd any more than she did. "Can we- can we stop please?" She had been tugged along for a fair distance now, and she was fairly certain she wasn't in any danger of losing her virtue.

Ben...Ben was very good at lying. Better than most. He lied for fun. He spent time lying to his aprents, he even lied to Elena sometimes--the one he probably lied to the least. He lied to professors, to first years, to the house elves and ghosts at school. And about stupid things, too, not only things to get him out of trouble. And he always lied to girls. So now that his and Isabella's life depended on it (well, less dramatically), he was glad that he had the ultimate skill of lying with ease.

"You shouldn't go in places like that," he said harshy. He wasn't sure why he was so bothered by the thought of her going into somewhere like that. Normally he would be all for some sort of entertainment, corrupting an innocent girl like Isabella, but he had seen girls go down the bad road involving older men and alcohol, and he didn't want her to get involved.

He was startled by her question, and he stopped, looking down at her. "Fine."

"I didn't know," she repeated, frowning slightly. Isabella had never been fond of being lectured, though there was a shocking amount of people who seemed to feel the need to tell her what she should have been doing. She was too quiet, she read too much, she should get out more, she should be less naive, she should stand up for herself. "I didn't want to wander around and get even more lost than I already was, so I went in the first building I saw."

Her cheeks flushed as they came to an abrupt stop and she hesitantly withdrew her hand from his, crossing her arms over her stomach uneasily. "I'm sorry. I didn't- you didn't have to do that." Isabella hadn't meant to ruin his evening. She sighed softly, her fingers digging into the fabric of her shirt as she tried to come up with something to say that would make the situation less awkward for her. "But... thank you."

Ben wasn't usually a lecturer. Usually he was the one being lectured. You drink too much, you're not doing anything with your life, you've had too many detentions, you're rude, you are lazy, you need to be respectful, you need to do better on your exams, stop failing classes. But something had struck a nerve, there was something about this girl that made him feel the need to protect. He barely even knew her.

"Whatever," he said, shrugging his shoulders. "It's not a big deal." He crossed his own arms against his tee-shirt covered chest, looking around for a brief moment. "You have to be careful in there. You don't know what you'll run into." He felt like that was an explanation as to why he had, so called 'saved' her from the men at the pub. He still didn't know why, and that was bothering him a lot.

Isabella wondered what Ben had been afraid would happen. She hadn't exactly felt comfortable around the drunken man, but she hadn't thought about what might have happened to her if Ben hadn't been there to come to her rescue. She shuddered slightly, before willing herself to unwind her tense arms from her torso, letting them hang limply at her sides.

"Can you help me find my way back to the main street?" she asked quietly. "I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere, and if you get me back there, I should be able to find my way." She didn't want to bother him any more than she already had, and judging from the look on his face, that was a rather... substantial amount. "You don't have to, obviously," she added hastily. "But I'd really appreciate it."

Ben looked back towards the bar. No one was exiting the door, so they were still safe. He wasn't sure he wanted to go back there; well, of course he didn't. He couldn't now. Now he didn't have anything to do. Turning his head back to her, he blinked a few times, before her questioned registered. "What? Oh. Uh, sure," he said, lifting his hand to rub the back of his neck.

He looked around again, trying to remember exactly where he was. He had only had one drunk, luckily, and that hadn't done anything to him. "This way," he said, pointing to the corner. He started to head that way, hoping secretly he was going in the right direction.

Isabella wished she could read his mind. The way he looked back at the bar sent a flurry of possibilities into her head. Did he want to go back instead of walking her? Was he afraid the drunkard was going to come after them? Was he longing for the drink that he had to leave behind? None of these options seemed particularly appealing, and Isabella bit down gently on her lip as they started walking.

"I'm really sorry," she blurted out suddenly (as she had quite the knack for doing at the worst possible times). "I didn't mean to ruin your day."

She really didn't want to read his mind, honestly. Not that he had much in there. He just kept walking slightly ahead of her, silently until she spoke. he didn't turn his head back to her, he just shrugged. "I wasn't doing anything anyway," was his only response.

Bella blinked blankly at his answer. It was so... blunt. She didn't really have much experience when it came to blokes. Other than family and close friends like Porter, the only one she'd ever considered romantically was Adam, and he'd always been fairly chatty. "Uh. Okay," she answered stupidly, before running to catch up with him. "...Do you go to places like that a lot?"

If Ben was anything, it was blunt. He said just about anything and everything that came to mind, without having a problem with it after it came out. Usually it got him into trouble, but he only shrugged. He honsetly didn't care. "Yes," he stated simply. He didn't think there was a problem with that, going into strange bars. He was of age, after all.

Ben glanced at her as they walked, noticing that she looked...pretty rough. She looked so embarrassed, and it made him feel a little bad. For once in his life, he felt awkward, and he felt like he had to make her feel better. Rubbing the back of his neck, he glanced over at her again. "I feel like you're hiding something from me," he finally said after awhile of silence.

Isabella swallowed nervously at his words. Part of her wanted to scream out that yes, she was not only a Weasley, which enough in itself to send a Goyle running, but she was the sister of Kaida Weasley, who had clobbered Elena in a quidditch match. But the more rational part of her reminded herself that those were two glaring strikes against her, not to mention her already shy, bookish tendencies that were enough to keep most blokes away.

But she couldn't just lie to him. She couldn't tell him that she wans't hiding something from him like she was. It was one thing to avoid the truth; it was another thing entirely to bend it.

"What if I told you it's... better to keep it hidden?"

She kept beating around the bush, and he was kind of getting annoyed. She was frustrating, he had never found himself wanting to know a secret so badly. Usually he just let it roll off his back and ignored it, but this he couldn't. "What does that even mean?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "What are you hiding?"

Isabella was about to admit it. She was about to confess everything and tell him that he never would have talked to her if he knew who she really was. She bit her lip for a moment, and her lips parted to spill the truth, but instead, what came out was, "Have you read this book?"

She withdrew it from her bag. "I bought it today. I was reading it when I got lost."

Ben blinked a few times. What came out of her mouth definitely was not expected. By the look on her face and her pause, he figured it was about to come out. He had surprised himself, too, becaus ehe hadn't expected her to admit it. He wanted her to, but also, he was having fun chasing this secret. Maybe he didn't really want to know? Well, he did. It was still fun to watch her squirm, but it was also eating him up.

He slowed down, looking over at her. "Have I read a book?" he asked, peering at it like it was a foreign object. "I don't read."

Isabella's eyes widened. "You don't read?" she asked incredulously. How could someone not read? Isabella spent a large amount of her free time with her nose in a book. Reading was a huge part of her life.

She reached into her bag and pulled out another, clearly more worn book that had clearly been read numerous time. "You should read this one," she said with a small smile. "It's my favorite."

Ben made a ridiculous face at her. "Do I look like someone that reads?" he asked, as if she was accusing him of the most ridiculous, heinous crime. Ben Goyle did not read. He did not do homework, he did not to classwork, he never paid attention, and he barely passed his exams. He did not spend free time reading, or even required time reading. He probably had never finished an entire book. Ever. In his life.

He snatched the book that she was holding up then, holding it in his hands as if it was diseased. "What the hell is it about?"

"I didn't realize there was a certain way someone had to look in order to read," she answered, blinking blankly at him. From anyone else, it might have been a snappy comeback, but coming from Isabella it was a quiet, hesitant statement.

She flinched as he snatched the book away from her. "A lot of things," she replied. "But mostly... it's a journey."

"I ahng out in places like that," he said, pointing back in the direction that they had come from, where the bar had been. "And believe me, there is a certain way. I just don't look it."

Examining the book, he opened it for a moment, then closed it. "I have better things to do than read." Which was..basically a lie. Really, what did Ben have to do? He just didn't like to read.

"Oh." She took the book back from him, carefully replacing it in her bag. "That's alright. I suppose I relate a lot more to the characters than you would." Like the main character, Isabella was still struggling to figure out who she was. Ben seemed so sure of himself that he'd probably find the notion laughable.

Ben raised an eyebrow again. Relating to characters? They were just that..characters. They weren't even real. "What's the fun in reading something that isn't even real? And usually wont even happen." He shrugged. He thought it was stupid. And although Ben seemed very sure of himself, he truely wasn't. He just acted the way he did so that no one would talk to him. He shut people out because he didn't know how to react to people. He really didn't know who he was, at all. Not that he realized that.

Isabella couldn't help but smile slightly as she answered him. "I've found that I tend to enjoy literature's realities a lot more than my own," she explained. And maybe that was silly, but it was entirely too true. In literature, she and Ben's situation would have worked itself out through a dramatic one hundred pages or so of turmoil and frustration and- she tried to hold back a blush at the thought- passion. Looking up at him now, Isabella had no doubt things would not end nearly as well for her.
