Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Isabella Weasley and Ben Goyle
Where: Bar
When: Evening
What: An unlikely savior!
Rating: Pg-13
Status: Complete

It wasn’t a very common occurrence for Isabella Weasley to get lost, but when she did get lost, she really got lost. She had become rather absorbed in her novel, a fantastic tale of chivalry and romance, and with her nose buried inside it, she hadn’t even realized she had taken the wrong turn until it was far too late. When she finally willed herself to lower the book- mostly because it was getting dark and difficult to read- Isabella didn’t recognize a single street name, a single building, a single landmark. After wandering aimlessly for a good thirty minutes, she finally gave up and entered the closest building that had its lights on.

She was immediately caught off guard by the smell of the place as she pushed open the door. It was a bar, filled with men and a few women of all sorts of shapes and sizes, some attractive, some not so much, but they all had one thing in common, and that was a drink in their hands. Alcohol had always made Isabella a bit uneasy. She’d never tried it herself, mostly because she didn’t want her parents to somehow find out, but she knew the sort of effects it had on people.

The girl stuck out like a sore thumb as she slowly made her way toward the bar. While everyone else seemed laid-back and cheery, Isabella was tense and clearly ill-at-ease. They were loud, and she was quiet as a mouse until she finally reached her destination, yet she could not go unnoticed. A large, much older man seated on a stool next to her turned and offered a too-large smile. “Hello there.”

Isabella jolted and forced herself to give a nervous smile in return. “Uh, hello. Hi.” She turned back to ask the bartender where on Earth she was, but the moment her lips parted, she was interrupted again.

“What’s your name?” The same man was eyeing her with that odd grin of his.

“Er- Isabella,” she answered weakly.

“That is a bee-yoo-" His sentiments were interrupted by a hiccup and a chuckle. “A bee-yoo-tih-fuhl name, lass.”

“…Thanks?”

Ben...Ben was very good at lying. Better than most. He lied for fun. He spent time lying to his aprents, he even lied to Elena sometimes--the one he probably lied to the least. He lied to professors, to first years, to the house elves and ghosts at school. And about stupid things, too, not only things to get him out of trouble. And he always lied to girls. So now that his and Isabella's life depended on it (well, less dramatically), he was glad that he had the ultimate skill of lying with ease.

"You shouldn't go in places like that," he said harshy. He wasn't sure why he was so bothered by the thought of her going into somewhere like that. Normally he would be all for some sort of entertainment, corrupting an innocent girl like Isabella, but he had seen girls go down the bad road involving older men and alcohol, and he didn't want her to get involved.

He was startled by her question, and he stopped, looking down at her. "Fine."

"I didn't know," she repeated, frowning slightly. Isabella had never been fond of being lectured, though there was a shocking amount of people who seemed to feel the need to tell her what she should have been doing. She was too quiet, she read too much, she should get out more, she should be less naive, she should stand up for herself. "I didn't want to wander around and get even more lost than I already was, so I went in the first building I saw."

Her cheeks flushed as they came to an abrupt stop and she hesitantly withdrew her hand from his, crossing her arms over her stomach uneasily. "I'm sorry. I didn't- you didn't have to do that." Isabella hadn't meant to ruin his evening. She sighed softly, her fingers digging into the fabric of her shirt as she tried to come up with something to say that would make the situation less awkward for her. "But... thank you."

Ben wasn't usually a lecturer. Usually he was the one being lectured. You drink too much, you're not doing anything with your life, you've had too many detentions, you're rude, you are lazy, you need to be respectful, you need to do better on your exams, stop failing classes. But something had struck a nerve, there was something about this girl that made him feel the need to protect. He barely even knew her.

"Whatever," he said, shrugging his shoulders. "It's not a big deal." He crossed his own arms against his tee-shirt covered chest, looking around for a brief moment. "You have to be careful in there. You don't know what you'll run into." He felt like that was an explanation as to why he had, so called 'saved' her from the men at the pub. He still didn't know why, and that was bothering him a lot.

Isabella wondered what Ben had been afraid would happen. She hadn't exactly felt comfortable around the drunken man, but she hadn't thought about what might have happened to her if Ben hadn't been there to come to her rescue. She shuddered slightly, before willing herself to unwind her tense arms from her torso, letting them hang limply at her sides.

"Can you help me find my way back to the main street?" she asked quietly. "I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere, and if you get me back there, I should be able to find my way." She didn't want to bother him any more than she already had, and judging from the look on his face, that was a rather... substantial amount. "You don't have to, obviously," she added hastily. "But I'd really appreciate it."

Ben looked back towards the bar. No one was exiting the door, so they were still safe. He wasn't sure he wanted to go back there; well, of course he didn't. He couldn't now. Now he didn't have anything to do. Turning his head back to her, he blinked a few times, before her questioned registered. "What? Oh. Uh, sure," he said, lifting his hand to rub the back of his neck.

He looked around again, trying to remember exactly where he was. He had only had one drunk, luckily, and that hadn't done anything to him. "This way," he said, pointing to the corner. He started to head that way, hoping secretly he was going in the right direction.

Isabella wished she could read his mind. The way he looked back at the bar sent a flurry of possibilities into her head. Did he want to go back instead of walking her? Was he afraid the drunkard was going to come after them? Was he longing for the drink that he had to leave behind? None of these options seemed particularly appealing, and Isabella bit down gently on her lip as they started walking.

"I'm really sorry," she blurted out suddenly (as she had quite the knack for doing at the worst possible times). "I didn't mean to ruin your day."

She really didn't want to read his mind, honestly. Not that he had much in there. He just kept walking slightly ahead of her, silently until she spoke. he didn't turn his head back to her, he just shrugged. "I wasn't doing anything anyway," was his only response.

Bella blinked blankly at his answer. It was so... blunt. She didn't really have much experience when it came to blokes. Other than family and close friends like Porter, the only one she'd ever considered romantically was Adam, and he'd always been fairly chatty. "Uh. Okay," she answered stupidly, before running to catch up with him. "...Do you go to places like that a lot?"

If Ben was anything, it was blunt. He said just about anything and everything that came to mind, without having a problem with it after it came out. Usually it got him into trouble, but he only shrugged. He honsetly didn't care. "Yes," he stated simply. He didn't think there was a problem with that, going into strange bars. He was of age, after all.

Again, she was taken aback by the brevity of his answer, but this time maintained some semblance of composure as she kept walking with him. "How come?" she asked. Now, this could have been taken the wrong way. It could have been taken as judgmental, but really, Isabella was just a curious girl. It was part of what had landed her in the Ravenclaw house, and she honestly wanted to know what he was doing in places that he himself had told her were dangerous.

Places like the one he had just been in were dangerous for her, but not for him. He went in there all the time because no one bothered a kid like him. And if they did, he thrived fof the excitement and the trouble he could get into for starting a fight. But most of the time, he liked to not stand out as the broody Goyle kid, and he could hide in the corner and drink and no one would think that was weird. No one would scold him or give him detention. But her..she was a pretty girl. No, she was beautiful, and pure, and she would get hurt. And for some reason, he didn't want that to happen to her. "Because I like going there?" he asked, more a question than a statement, looking over her to make a face. He didn't know why she was asking so many questions. "It's better than being home."

"Oh. You talked about that before." She really wished she could say she understood how he was feeling, but the fact of the matter was that Isabella hadn't the slighest clue how it felt to have parents like his. Hers were warm and understanding, and she would never, ever talk about them the way he did because they would never deserve it the way his apparently did. "There are nicer places you could go," she offered hesitantly. "Places that are less... well, you know."

"Yeah," he said, remembering that he had mentioned that he hated his parents. It wasn't a surprise, though. Of course she knew it, he didn't keep it a secret. When she told him he could go to nicer places, he rolled his eyes. "What, like a book closet?" he said sarcastically. "You don't know me. At all, actually."

Isabella ducked her head in embarrassment. Okay, so maybe she didn't exactly go to a lot of exciting places, but she didn't go hanging around ones where girls would get into trouble if they entered. And... maybe she didn't know him, but she had never said she did! She was just... Well, she didn't really know what she was doing. The second Ben found out who she was, he wasn't going to talk to her anyway, not that they were engaging in particularly stimulating conversation at the moment, but still.

He had come to her rescue in that bar. That had to mean something, right? And the other day, he had been a lot more friendly. That meant something, too, didn't it?

Was she being naive and foolish? Was Ben Goyle just as Porter had said, 'a mean guy' who thought of her the exact same way everyone else did? "I get the feeling you don't want me to know you," she said.

He noticed out of the corner of his eye when she ducked her head, and he sort of felt bad. Which was rare, since Ben never seemed to have a concience. He glanced at her for a moment, before he rounded a corner. He had slowed down considerably now, so she could at least keep up with him.

What she said took him aback a bit. He looked at her, both his eyebrows raised. "Excuse me?"

She was relieved when he slowed down. Isabella was not out of shape, but she had never been an athletic person. She was more of a... sit around and read type of person. "I... don't think you want to let me get to know you?" she offered hesitantly. She hadn't really expected to get any sort of reaction out of him. Nothing else seemed to do the trick.

He hadn't expected her to say that. Elena had said something similar before, but he never realizd that it was that obvious. Or that..that was what he was doing. He ust closed people off, he didn't do it on purpose. What was she going on about? "You're the one that hasn't even told me who you are," he said. "I think you're the one that doesn't want me to get to know you."

"Or maybe I want you to know more about me than a stupid last name," she snapped.

Her eyes widened at her outburst, and she clapped a hand over her mouth in shock. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..." Isabella was very rarely short with people, and she was certainly not short to people she didn't know very well. She sped up her pace considerably, not entirely sure of where she was going.

Ben's eyes widened. He definitely was surprised with her outburst, and obviously it surrised her, too. Blinking, he watched as she took off faster than him. Following her, he just stared at her with a dumbfounded look on her face. "You want me to know about you?" he asked as he got closer.

Isabella's cheeks were bright red as he followed after her, and she wanted nothing more to blend into the pavement as she kept up her pace. "Just forget I said anything," she mumbled. The look on his face made her feel like an idiot, and she was in no hurry to embarrass herself further.

Ben had to admit, the red on her cheeks was cute. It made him smirk slightly, at least he wasn't uneasy any longer. Following her, he tried to think of something to say. Something clever, perhaps, but that didn't come. He stayed quiet for another moment, before he stopped. "You're going the wrong way, you know."

Her steps imediately came to a hault. She took in a shaky breath, trying to think of anything that would allow her to walk out of this situation with some semblance of pride, but could think of none. Slowly, she turned around to face him, willing her eyes to raise to his face. "You should probably be leading the way," she mumbled, forcing her legs to make the short journey back to where he was standing.

Ben just smirked. Even though he found himself actually being some sort of human being towards her and not being his normal self, he still found it amusing to be a bit of a jerk. "I was," he responded, "until you went taking off." Starting in the other direction, then, he headed towards the main road.

"Sorry," she mumbled. Isabella wished she had never left her house that day. Sure, she'd picked up a fantastic book, and it had been nice to get the fresh air, but this humiliation was something she certainly could have lived without. It would have been bad with anyone, but with Ben, who she couldn't help but feel a bit... attracted to, it was twenty times worse, and every time he gave that smirk of his, she felt like a complete and total waste of oxygen.
