Alice was having a slow sort of day. She wasn't entirely sure what was going on, but other than classes and a fair bit of studying, she'd had very little to do. After a bit of a walk on the grounds, she returned to the Ravenclaw Tower, answering the riddle rather lazily. It wasn't difficult. She needed something to distract her, maybe a friend?

Once she entered the commons, finding it rather empty except for a few people milling around here or there, quietly working on essays or staring at nothing in particular, she glanced around for someone friendly. She spotted Adam sitting over by the fire and she bounced over, sitting heavily beside him on the couch without really taking a moment to glance at his facial features. It was only once she was there that she realised he seemed not quite himself, "What's wrong, Adam?"

----

It had been hours since he moved. Adam had barely heard, or even seen Alice's approach. There remained the overwhelming shock that has left him immobile, weak at being left on his own, left by him, for hours now. It was over. Every kiss, every touch of those warm fingers... never again will he be able to savor his taste, hear his voice. All because of his rashness, his neglect for caution. It was all his fault.

The slight shift on the couch beside him was the first thing that broke his stupor, though when he raised his head, his expression remained neutral, emotionless. "Did you say anything?" His carelessly delivered words sounded quite unlike him, almost rude though it wasn't intentional.

----

Quite admittedly, Alice hadn't seen a lot of Adam lately. Perhaps it was just that they weren't around one another a lot. She didn't seem to see him much. It wasn't really her fault, she thought. They were friends, but not overly close, despite the fact that she cared deeply about whether or not Adam was in good health. Alice was good at worrying about people. He had seemed fine whenever she saw him. Happy. Vibrant. But something had obviously happened to turn that around.

A deep frown set into her features at her response. That wasn't like Adam at all. He was always alert, and he usually had a smile for her, "I asked what was wrong...because something quite obviously is?" she said with concern written on her features, scooting a little bit closer and turning to the side to view him better.

---

Adam had been absent in the lives of his other peers since his days of persuing Westly had started- he was never unaware of such a fact. At the time, it was something he barely cared about, for he was blinded by his desire- desire to win Westly over, then the more overwhelming craving to be with him when the other permitted him to. It had all been with it when Westly became his- only his. But when the other left him, the realization of every neglect came down on him with full force, and guilt has been clawing its way from inside him since.

As he looked at Alice, all he could see were her eyes, and the concern embedded on them. "Things have been..." he drifted off, unable to even pretend to be alright. Where was he? He raked an unsteady hand through his messy locks. Adam Pucey never allowed himself to fall into depression because of anyone. Even so, did he not pride himself as a skilled a pretender? "I don't know what's going on anymore." He reached out to Alice, fingers finding the other's wrist, and he pulled her closer towards him. Her mere presence, her closeness was a source of comfort and he hungrily fed off of the small relief she gave him. "I lost something." he said, keeping her hand on his knee, as he stared into the open flames. "Something valuable. And I don't think I'll be getting it back..."

---

Alice had been quite absernt herself since she became caught up in the torrid affairs of sneaking around with Bryce Ambercrombie behind her brother's back. As far as she knew, they weren't really...well, anything. Nothing had ever been said, he'd never asked her out, but she felt close to him. She felt like he liked her and she liked him, and that was all she needed for that time. She didn't know where they would be a year from then, whether they would ever speak again, but she knew that he had made a great impression upon her.
If there was one thing that Alice hadn't expected, it was that Adam would be one to slip. He didn't seem himself...in fact, he didn't seem alright at all. And what he was saying didn't make complete sense, but she could gather quite a bit. It was a shock, the way he grabbed her wrist and pulled her closer, but she didn't resist. She could tell that he needed her. Alice wasn't about to leave Adam alone when he needed her, and she was fairly certain the something he lost wasn't as miniscule as his favorite pair of socks, "I...I'm sorry, Adam. I know that losing anything is upsetting. Is there anything I can do to help?"

---

Alice was one Adam could say he has learned to decode and translate in great detail over the past years. She was a character simple enough to define in his mind. She was good, fiercely loyal but ulitimately fragile. She would never be the sort who would abandon a friend in need, despite how corny that sounded. Such thoughts rolled in Adam's mind as his glassy gaze turned to her. He marvelled at how the strong sense of concern in her eyes didn't waver, or lessen even after his admission. In fact, it seemed to accelerate the longer she stayed with him. Suddenly inspired, his hands found their way into hers. "You're my friend, aren't you, Alice?" he asked, using a tone that was hopeful. "If I asked for your help, you would, wouldn't you?"

---

She was quite unaware of just how good of a manipulator Adam was. She was loyal to a fault, most certainly. There was very little that Alice wouldn't do for her friends, especially if it was in her power to do for them. She was a gentle soul, and she liked to see people happy. It was one of her great joys in life to help others out with their problems. She never wanted anyone to hesitate when it came to asking for her help. Chances were, if someone asked her the craziest thing possible and she had the ability to do it, Alice would try. At the very least, she would get them in touch with someone that could help. She was becoming increasingly concerned when Adam finally spoke again, asking her questions that made her frown just slightly. The answers were obvious, weren't they? "Of course I am, Adam," she replied, she had always considered him a friend, "I'll do whatever I can to help. You know that."

---

Adam would have cracked a smile at her words, at such a sympathetic tone, if he could. It was exactly what he needed to hear. He threw his bait and she took it without a trace of hesitation, as he expected. He turned, his muscles protesting to the sudden shift though he ignored them, then his eyes scanned the room to check if anyone was within earshot, and looked deeply back into hers when he knew it was safe. "I need you to listen." The grip of his fingers tightened against hers, but not enough to hurt her. To her it could perhaps be a gesture that begged for her to stay, to him, it was an action of caution, in case she decided to run away and he wasn't done yet. He reached another hand out to gently push a lock of her light hair from her features, tucking the strands behind her ear. "I need you to pretend we're together." he said, very slowly. "A few days of holding hands and public displays of affection. Nothing serious at all. I'll even allow you to set your own rules, if you wish." In his mind, he knew if it would be anyone, Alice would be a definite candidate for this kind of job. "This should be a public relationship. Everyone should know. But it is important that we keep this in secrecy. I need you right now, Alice..." At these spoken words, a glimpse of his inner anguish escaped his tone and expression, though he carefully hid it again after an inhaled breath. "I have no one else to turn to. Help me, please."

Keen eyes darted from left to right, to the shocked faces of those who had seen their unusual display. "And that's all I can really ask of you. Thank you..." Adam buried his face on her hair to hide the smile that had grown into a grin at the realization that their plan was already in motion. "Not on the lips. I promise..." he whispered, before releasing her and moving away from her in the slightest. Their noses were almost touching with their close proximity. "I need you to listen." he started slowly. "Tomorrow, you'll have to be with me the whole day. In classes, at lunch. Things have to be subtle, but obvious. And I know you'll do well..." With one last tuck of her hair behind her ear, and a brush of his fingers against her flushed cheeks he stood. "You'll be hearing from me soon." he said. After a last kiss on her knuckles, he let go, turned and walked towards his dormitories, knowing there was much needed time to ponder his next steps...

She almost held her breath when Adam buried his face in her hair. Maybe she should have set a few more restrictions. But he promised, not on the lips. Still, the position he held even after he moved away slightly was surprisingly intimate. She was still a bit shocked by it. She nodded to all the conditions he set, unable to really say anything. She just sat there complacently as Adam said goodbye and kissed her hand. It was kind of sweet in a weird sort of way. She sort of waved in parting as Adam walked away. She leaned back against the couch a little bit, bewildered and wondering what she had just gotten herself into. She replayed the moments in her head, but she felt she was missing something between comforting a friend and becoming a fake girlfriend, but it was just too confusing for her to figure out at the moment, so she let it go, trying to mentally prepare herself for the events to come.
