Who: Ned, and Sarah Williams
When: The morning of Day 3
What: The arrival of the Piemaker
Where: In the dead center of the City
Rating: TBA, depends on who answers!
Status: Complete

Ned was not having his best day ever.

He couldn't concentrate, not even on pies, and for him, that was saying something. Baking had always been a way to relieve stress, and when it no longer worked, he was in a bad state. Emerson was investigating the Über-Life Life Insurance case, and Olive was flitting around, rambling to a point that Ned knew she knew something but wouldn't say what. And there was still no sign of Chuck.

Though he knew he'd had to tell her, and he knew it was going to hurt, he wished it hadn't had to be quite like this. And that she wouldn't have reacted as she had. Ned dealt with rejection as well as anyone else might; he'd been dealing with it most of his life and was learning to come to terms. But not even being able to find her made it ten times harder than he would've expected.

So he was holed away, no pun intended, in the kitchen, staring into a bowl as if willing the ingredients to mix themselves together. A noise next to him was the only thing that made him look up, and when he did, he caught himself falling.

Falling? Who fell in the middle of a pie shop?

The next sensation he felt was warmth. It was still chilly, but Ned knew instinctively he was outside, and yet not in the snow. It was bright out, too. Nice. But not home. No, he was most definitely somewhere else. It wasn't some hole in the middle of The Pie Shop's floor he'd fallen into, that was for sure. There was music playing, somewhere near him, and when his eyes focused more clearly, he caught sight of waltzing. Waltzing? Who waltzed anymore? Well, he'd like to, but that was hardly the point. There was the clang of metal on metal, and he peered closer to find people fencing. In strange, peculiar clothing. And... He knew he was crazy when he glanced over his shoulder and caught sight of people on horseback charging towards each other with spears in hand.

Spears? Jousting? In the words of one Emerson Cod, Ned didn't even try to hold his tongue. "Oh, hell no."

Day number three had arrived and Sarah still wasn't any closer to a decision on what exactly to do than she had been when she first learned she had returned to Jareth's Labyrinth. Her mind was a mess, her thoughts swayed between heading off without a second thought to find an entrance to the Labyrinth and a way home, or staying behind and trying to help everyone else who got sucked into this place with her.

The envelope that she had found on her door this morning had been crinkled and open enough times that the parchment was beginning to be almost illegible in some areas. Jareth would throw a party to celebrate the kidnapping of a handful of people. The thought of which made Sarah huff out loud anger, "Who does he think he is?"

The sounds of swords clashing had grown louder, and despite the screams of many amused Goblins, Sarah kept on walking until she managed to near the jousting field and stopped to watch the show. It was a distraction at best, but Sarah had few options to think over, and she needed to make a decision soon.

Ned looked around desperately, trying to figure out where he could be. It wasn't home, that was for sure. The question wasn't even as much where was he as much as, how had he gotten there? Sure, strange things happened around him more often than some, but this was completely new.

Finding the first unintimidating person he could (and there were many who looked much more intimidating than she did), he walked up, shifting from foot to foot. She didn't seem to have noticed his arrival, which he found nearly impossible to believe. People didn't just drop out of the sky every day, did they?

Finally, Ned had to cave. Clearing his throat, he made his presence known. "Um. Hi. Right, so um... Look, this is going to sound like an incredibly stupid question, I know, bear with me. Where...where exactly are we?" 'Where am I' might've made more sense, but that sounded like an amnesiac on the television versus a person in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or the wrong place at the right time, who knew?

Ned's voice immediately caught her attention, in a world where most of the voices belonged to Goblin's it was rather relieving to hear a voice that didn't belong to one of the smaller creatures roaming about the faire at the moment. She spun around slightly to face the other man, who she finally noticed looked like a deer in head lights.

She found herself not very surprised by the sudden barrage of questions thrown in her direction. In fact, for some reason it was rather refreshing to feel like she wasn't alone here. Her lips pulled into a smile, "Its ok ... you're not crazy. What I'm about to tell you, will probably sound a little crazy."

There really was no way to explain what was going on, without sounding like a complete and utter nut case. So Sarah took a long breath before she begun to rely the easy version, "Long story short, The Goblin King Jareth has decided that kidnapping innocent people from their homes and brining them here to his Underground city to live would be a smart idea."

Sarah paused and braced herself for the man's response, she already knew how crazy it all sounded. She really wished it was just another dream, and any second they'd all be waking up.

For a long moment, Ned simply stared at her. Okay, he knew he sounded completely off his rocker, but did she have to go mocking him like that? How was that fair for anyone involved? Ned was already having images of himself being carted off to some asylum and who knew, maybe it was for the best if he was having visions like this.

"Look, don't get me wrong," he started, holding up his hands as if declaring his own innocence, "I know I sound mentally deranged and all, but... Seriously. I'm completely clueless here."

Honestly. Goblin Kings? Did she come up with that off the top of her head? She should really consider crime fighting, with a mind that fast. Well, if she'd quit making defenseless, scared-to-death-pun-not-intended humans feel even worse and more stupid than they already did.

If only she was mocking him! Sarah tried to keep a straight face, but she knew after the prolonged silence that she was losing him. The brunette frowned and lifted her hands in a wave.

"No you don't! I'm being serious here." She said more firmly. Her own hands waved about them in hopes of drawing his attention to the world around him. There were goblin's fencing, suits of armor jousting on horseback, Fireys's juggling their own heads about. "Look around you, how can I be making any of this up when its right in front of you. Or are you telling me, you've just come from a world where fairies grant wishes and elves help make shoes?"

It didn't occur to her that the hypothetical world she just created out of thin air, could really exist. After all, people were being pulled here from worlds where there were witches, vampires, and werewolves. She really didn't want to offend the gentleman in front of her, but he needed to take her seriously. "I know its hard to believe ... but its true."

Oh, God. She saw them, too? Ned wasn't completely insane. Well, maybe he was, but if that was the case, then she was, too. Or maybe he was dreaming it all. He'd had stranger dreams than this, but they'd never felt so real.

Nor had he ever been able to smell smoked turkey legs.

"I... Yeah, sorry, I think I'm hallucinating. Gas fumes finally getting to me or something, I don't know. Sorry, but... Look, I appreciate it but..."

He would've turned to go, had he not almost tripped over a small person carrying a plate of food. Only... "That's not human. Is it?" Ned finally choked out, blinking his surprise. The thing turned and snapped at him in such broken English that, in his confused state, he didn't even try to translate. "I... But... How?" He knew he had to sound like an idiot, but how was any of this supposed to make sense?

"Watch out-" Sarah cried out just as Ned turned and nearly tripped over a passing Goblin. One of her eyes winced shut as the Goblin turned and spat a few rather rude words in Ned's direction. It seemed that at least finally manage to knock a small bit of sense into him.

Sarah waited for the Goblin to continue on its way before she shrugged. "Fairy magic, you know like the stuff in fairtales? Jareth hasn't really given any thought, nor does he care if we want to be here. We're simply here... I bet if you looked in one of your pockets you'd find a room key. At least I did when I woke up here."

Sarah sighed, she still wasn't exactly happy to be here. Not in a million years did she think she'd be dragged back. "Just take a deep breath and try and relax?" At least that's what she was still telling herself to do.

For a long, silent moment, Ned could only stare at her. This woman looked so normal, and yet she fully believed what she was saying. But there really was no denying it, was there? There were other animals around him. At least, he thought they were animals. They certainly weren't human, were they?

Taking a step backwards, he finally turned and truly looked at his informant. Pretty, he noticed, but not overly so. She had such an honest face. It couldn't be a lie, could it? Not with the evidence right in front of him. So he did as she asked, and reached into his pocket; seconds later, Ned pulled out a small key with a room number written on it.

"Oh, come on!" he all but whined. "Really? You mean--we're trapped here? This is some...permanent type arrangement?" It wasn't a day visit if he was getting a key. And she'd said they'd been brought there to live. "What kind of... What human has the power to do that?" But she'd already said Goblin King, hadn't he? That must've been the thing he'd nearly crashed into. A goblin. If he hadn't seen it for himself, he'd never have believed it.

Sarah was patient, after two full days she still wasn't exactly ok with being here either. She knew it was a bit of a culture shock, so she wasn't about to rush Ned's acceptance of having to live here the rest of his life. Sarah still had some hope that challenging the Labyrinth would hopefully grant some, if not all of the captives of the Labyrinth passage home. It worked before, in theory it should work again - she hoped.

"Well, for now - you see, there might be a way out of here. I'm not entirely sure it'll work yet, but I think there's a good chance." Sarah's face faltered a bit, she didn't want to install a false sense of hope in anyone. "I'm Sarah - Sarah Williams. It is nice to met you ...?" Changing the subject to introductions seemed like a better choice in conversation at the moment, at least until she figured things out a bit more.

"A way... Chance... Right, um, Ned. I mean, that's my name. Yeah. It's nice to, uh, meet you, too. Better circumstances might've been nice..." In true Ned fashion, he didn't reach out a hand to shake, and never did unless it was offered first, but he did offer a cordial nod as a greeting.

Ugh, he was doing the stuttering thing. Irritating much? "You seem...well, calm. Sort of. You can't tell me this doesn't bother you at all." Maybe she'd been living there for years. That would be understandable. Though who could live in-- "Is this supposed to be a Renaissance Festival?" he blurted in surprise.

"Nice to met you, Ned and for this place these circumstances are fairly normal." If you considered you weren't meeting anyone while they were killing fairies, going to the bathroom in a nearby fountain, falling down an oubliette - really she could probably think of a dozen worse ways to met someone here. She was getting herself side tracked though.

"I've been here a few days, and once before when I was younger. I'm fairly upset about being brought here, but I learned back then that saying things like Its not fair, isn't going to get you very fair in situations like these." Sarah took a moment to pause and look around the Renaissance Fairgrounds and shrugged.

"I suppose, Jareth's sense of entertainment is rather old world. Don't think he'd try and bother putting anything in that'd make sense like a strip mall or a gas station." Not that they really needed anything like that now, while they were here it was all Dance, Magic, Dance and Medieval Times.

"Normal?" Oh God, he needed sleep. And food. Coffee, maybe, and he wasn't much of a coffee drinker. Actually, he wasn't much into drinking in general, but he suddenly had a desperate craving for a stiff vodka or...something. Whatever manly men drank when the world had opened up and swallowed them whole. Literally.

Ned winced as he watched the sword fighting. One fencer missed, jabbing his opponent in the arm. He really, really hoped that was some sort of blunted sword. "It's...unique, I'll grant him that."

Something she said had caught his interest, though. Glancing sideways, he smirked. "And most people wouldn't find a gas station all that entertaining, you know. Can't remember ever actually having a good time, there."

"Well, no ... but its something most people might take for granted in a normal world." Sarah shook her head, there really wasn't any sense at all to trying to make sense out of this place anymore. Unique was only one of many words one could use to describe it.

"I'm not even sure this is all that entertaining." She said with a sigh, just then her eyes caught site of the invitation she had in her hand. "Speaking of, I'm sure you'll find one of these attached to your room door. Its an invitation, Jareth's decided to throw us a Masquerade." The look on her face just screamed, how nice of him.

At that, Ned couldn't help but laugh. What else could he do? Part of him still fully believed in a few hours he'd wake up and find this was the weirdest dream he'd ever had, brought on by too much peach and pear pie with the graham cracker crust. Rubbing his eyes, he shook his head with a defeated look.

"Well... I suppose if you can't beat them, join them, right? Course, it's not like I've brought anything fancy to wear. Sorry, had no idea I was traveling and actually needed to pack!" The whole idea was completely ridiculous, a big party dance type thing. That's when he was relatively certain he was dreaming it all up. After all, no kidnappers actually threw parties for their detainees, right?

It really was something to laugh over, and Ned's laughter was contagious. Even if Ned still wasn't taking her seriously, it wasn't like she could blame him. In a day or two he'd realize he wasn't dreaming or going home for that matter. It was nice to actually laugh, Sarah needed it.

"I'm sure there's someplace around here that's brimming with formal wear and masks. Just a matter of finding them," either that or Jareth had already provided them with things to wear and they were hiding away in their closest. She hadn't bothered to look after finding the invitation.

"So tell me Ned... what's it like where you come from?" Some people she had met already came from normal places, but they weren't exactly normal themselves. Sarah was rather interested to learn about these other places, it was fascinating.

He was already pretty sure he wasn't dreaming. It was a horrifying thought, but his dreams had never been quite so vivid. And usually, in a dream, Olive would pop out of a corner singing, or he'd be with Chuck and actually able to hold her hand or hug her or kiss her without some creative little technique. And there were very rarely goblins and women he'd never met.

Her question, however, wiped the smile from Ned's face. Because if this wasn't a dream, then he really was never going home. Or at least, no time soon. And Chuck could come back. And he wouldn't be there, and then what?

"I... Well, it's normal enough, I guess. More normal than here," he added, nodding around. "I run a bakery in a little city. Most of the people are pretty ordinary." Well, despite the fact that his sort-of girlfriend was technically dead. "Do a bit of detective work on the side, too, though I'd never call it a profession." Where he came from. That sounded like such a strange introduction. "Where are you from, if you don't mind me asking?"

"Same, actually I can't say there was anything remotely special about my home world. Unless you count my run in with Jareth and his Goblins when I was younger, its been ten years since that happened ... looking back I figured it was just a dream." It was like she had practically forgotten about it over the course of her adult years. Sarah let her thoughts wander as she was still unsure she wanted to try and figure out just why she had been brought back.

"A detective? That's an interesting side job for a baker." Sarah laughed, it sounded something out of one of the stories her kids might choose for a book report. Interesting though!

"Curious," he pondered out loud. "I thought maybe there might be some connection but..." Ned glanced around at the people surrounding them. Some were trying their hands at fencing, it seemed, and then there was the incredibly loud jousting, and so many other various events. But every single person around him looked so...different. "I don't know. I guess it's just strange to wonder why we picked."

He crossed his arms in front of him, a rare gesture but a protective one just the same. As kind as she'd been, he was still anxious. "Oh, well, I've... Some skill at it. A local PI...roped me into it." It was as good a story as any. Just because they weren't home with people they knew, didn't mean he could just wander about telling his life story. Even Chuck didn't know parts of it! "Really, the pies are more my thing."

"Most of the other people here don't seem to have connections either, unless they know one another already. Some even mentioned being on another weird planet before this." Sarah paused again and laughed, yet another outrageous piece of information was coming out of her mouth.

"You really must be sick of listening to all these outrageous things by now?" She really didn't have to pose it as a question, Sarah was rather over hearing it herself. Sarah adjusted her coat from letting the slightly chill air in and motioned behind her.

"If you'd like, I can take you to the dorms. Or at least show you the way so you know how to get back later?" She thought she should probably be getting back herself, check on things and some other people.

Ned wasn't exactly tired of listening to the outrageous things. Rather, he wished they weren't outrageous, or that he'd wake up from the crazy dream.

Still, he was a polite sort, and didn't exactly go saying no to offers of help. Usually. "That'd be helpful, I think. I'm sure I could find it on my own, but probably better I don't go charging into places I don't belong. You know, first day and all." He gave her a crooked grin and began walking in the direction she'd motioned.

Sarah lead Ned all the way back to the dorms, it wasn't a long walk and along the way she mentioned a few other points about the Ren Faire and what was in what direction. Just in case Ned wanted to explore on his own and not get lost.

When they arrived she pointed him in the right direction of the F Dorm, and reminded him that his room number was on the Key. She smiled and waved as she turned to leave.

"If you need anything, I'm in room 239 in the A dorm." She figured Ned might have more questions and she'd be opening the answering the ones she could later.

As weird as the whole thing was, at least he'd gotten to meet someone nice out of it. It could've been worse. If he was going to have weird dreams about being kidnapped by goblins, at least the woman in them was pretty and helpful.

"Thanks, Sarah," he called after her, before entering his dorm, otherwise known as prison cell.
