WHO: Tara MaClay & Severus Snape and OTA.
WHEN: Day Two, mid-day
WHAT: Trying to make the best of it.
WHERE: Wandering around the Ren Faire.
RATING: G, it’s Tara, seriously.
STATUS: Incomplete

What had happened to her? Everything had been so confusing. Well, everything still was confusing there was no doubting that, now it was just a different brand of confusing. Where was Mr. Giles library of the occult when you needed it? In fact, speaking of that, why hadn’t Tara ever read anything about this? Sure Mr. Giles had hundreds of books and how anyone could ever read through all of them was beyond Tara but between her, Willow and everyone else, how had no mention of this place ever come up? This place was clearly soaked with magic. Maybe it was the fact that most of the magic felt dark? The blond witch had always tried to stay away from the dark magic books unless forced into them for fighting some big badie or creepy crawlie of the night. If Willow was here maybe she would know something. Even though Tara hadn’t really approved, Willow had done some pretty extensive research on the topic of black magic.

Eyes squeezed shut tightly before fingers were brought up to gently run over them. At least the bed was somewhat comfortable. Once Tara had picked out a room she had spent some time pacing back and forth as her hands wrung together in deep thought. Giving up on pacing Tara finally had smoothed the long and flowing skirt underneath her and sat on the bed to contemplate further any plan of action she could come up with, even though no company had been in the room her head had still tilted forward allowing hair to fall over her features. The old action was barely preformed anymore with the rise in confidence she had obtained thanks to her relationship with Willow, but sometimes when alone she still practiced the art of hiding away from the world. Using the action as a sort of safety blanket to hide her self from the world when things seemed too complicated. The buzzing in her mind unfortunately got her no where. Laying back hair fell away from her face and the blond witch stared at the ceiling with no concrete conclusion coming to mind.

The sun shifted through her window causing the light to shine down on her and Tara sighed softly. There was really only one thing to do, and that was to make the best of it until a solution could be found. Standing up she smoothed out her clothing before glancing in the mirror and heading out of her bedroom door. Making her way down the stairs from the second floor Tara exited the building and walked towards the ren faire silently watching everyone shuffle to and fro. Interlacing her fingers in front of her a soft smile caressed her lips as a juggling entertainer began to make his way past, catching all of the young wicca’s attention and stopping her in her tracks.

The look received was a tad odd, but it didn’t seem as though it was in negativity. Maybe he just wasn’t used to expressing positive emotions through physical expression? It was always a possibility. Tara knit her brows at the man before her as he spoke, maybe the slang term was something from England? She’d never heard her mother or grandmother use the tem before. Though… perhaps it was derogatory? If that was the case it would make perfect sense as to why she had never heard it before either. Thinking back though, the blond witch wasn’t really sure how much group involvement either of the women in her linage had held either. Maybe it was just something commonly expressed in groups? Deciphering between two people sometimes was the hardest thing in the world to accomplish. She nodded her understanding in response to Snape’s explanation, what else was there really to do?

A slight frown curved her features as Tara shook her head slowly. “I’ve never meet that many. J-just the ones in my, um, f-family and my, um, ex-g-girlfriend.” The blond witch shifted, her eyes gliding over the activities surrounding them again. “I guess, w-witches and wizards aren’t that, um, common in California. Which is, odd c-considering the large, um, a-alternative and pagen communities.”

Snape blinked at Tara's mention of her ex-girlfriend, but said nothing. For him, same-sex relationships were no more deserving of comment than friendships with vampires or a preference for skyclad casting. He was truly shocked, however, at the isolation from the wizarding world that Tara and her family had experienced. He would have thought that the American wizarding community would be more responsible. He didn't really know that much about them. He couldn't, for example, remember the last time they played a side in the Quidditch World Cup.

"Do you mean to say that you have never been to a proper magical school? Do you know how to ride a broom, how to Apparate? My poor girl, this is atrocious! I can't imagine what is to be done about it, but it can't be allowed to continue!"

Despite the merit in Tara's idea of doing research on the nature of the land of the Labyrinth, Snape had been completely distracted by his astonishment at the negligence that had been visited upon this hapless witch. Truly, he felt sorry for her, and felt that, as a professor of magical subjects, he ought to do something about it.

The man seemed a bit unresponsive at first, not that Tara had felt that she had said anything out of the ordinary in her opinion anyways. Or had she? Maybe something she spoke of was a bit outside of what the man was accustomed to? It was hard to tell, she really didn’t know much about the British outside of what she had learned about Mr. Giles, and she hardly doubted that the entire populace was just like Mr. Giles.

At the sudden slew of questions Tara stood surprised for a moment. “R-ride a, broom? Apparate?” Frowning very slightly the blond witch shook her head in response to the man’s questions. Riding a broom had never seemed all that practical and the term apparate didn’t ring a bell at all. Was it another British term that she wouldn’t be familiar with as she wasn’t from the same culture? Allowed to continue? Brows furrowed in a bit of confusion as Snape continued on. “M-my mother taught me what she could, s-she was a very powerful witch, um, b-before her death.” Offering a weak smile the blond witch wasn’t sure where this conversation was going, but there was some curiosity in finding out where it would end up.

As Tara stammered out her confusion at Snape's series of passionate questions and statements, the wizard rolled his eyes in exasperation at whatever magical school board California might or might not have. It was appalling that a witch such as this should have been neglected in such a complete way. Indeed, if she was taught at home by her mother, it could well be that an entire wizarding family had been neglected. Snape was quite sure that someone, somewhere, should be ashamed of themselves.

"Tara, I don't know how this has come to pass, but there are some very serious deficiencies in your magical education. I know you must feel that this is not a big deal, since you have gone without this knowledge for so long, but you must understand that where I come from every witch and wizard takes these things for granted, and you would be a laughing-stock if you were to reveal your lack of knowledge in normal society. Please, I am a professor. Allow me to assess your education more fully, and perhaps I can offer you suggestions as to how you might rectify this terrible situation."

The obviously exasperation of the man made Tara a tad uncomfortable. Could she have possibly said something wrong? What was going on that he seemed so displeased with? It was a rather uncomfortable situation if she was the cause of his obvious actions. What could she do to fix it if she was? Especially when she had no clue what she had said that seemed to bother him specifically.

The sudden lengthy speech about her lacking magical abilities caused her to fall into a surprised silence for a moment. How was she even to begin to respond to this? Magical education? Her mother had taught her everything she could and heavens knew that her mother had been quite the powerful witch. A slight curiosity did rise that this man kept using the term wizard instead of warlock. Was he perhaps in habit of using that term? Or was that part of the differences between the states of Europe? It was hard to tell without knowing more about the British and their culture.

“Oh, I, I don’t..” She trailed off for a moment, trying to gain her bearings on the topic. The man had a strange sense of approaching things, but he did seem to have her best interests in heart, as odd as it was. It would be rude to refuse a mentor and offer from a teacher though, so perhaps she should take him up on it? If things didn’t work they would both be aware of the situation she was sure. What was there to lose really?

“I don’t see why we couldn’t, um, work something out.” Smiling at the man she wasn’t really sure where to go from there, perhaps the man would have further suggestions.

Snape nodded. The girl was respectful. It was good. He wasn't sure he was up to taking on a student, but it did seem a natural thing for a man of his talents and disposition to do. At the very least he would be able to make sure she knew enough to get by in polite wizarding company. He would have to get his rooms in order first, of course, but as soon as he was ready...

"Good. I would like an opportunity to assess your education more thoroughly, following which it may please me to offer you lessons is such areas where you have deficiency. Do you have a wand?"

He couldn't imagine what he would do if she didn't have a wand, but there were still things he could show her; broomriding and Apparating, for examples; potionwork, for another.

The man’s interest in her schooling was oddly intriguing, though realistically with his position she wasn’t overly surprised. Then from what Tara had seen of the California school system, if it was anything like that over in Europe, it was no wonder that a student actually interested in learning and being at least some-what informed was a miracle. How up front the man was about his intentions and ideals on what should and shouldn’t come of schooling was oddly un-nerving and refreshing all at the same time. It was nice to see there were, what seemed to be, no hidden motives.

“O-oh, um. N-no, I’ve never, um needed a wand for anything.” Thoughts slipped from the topic of conversation for a moment. What if they had learned two completely different types of magic? Would his teachings even be compatible with what she had learned? Could Tara learn an entirely new form of magic?

Snape was shocked when he heard that Tara not only did not have a wand, but claimed not to need a wand. He, truly, did not understand how that was possible. A wand was the locus of a wizard's technical application of his skill, the ultimate focus for practical manifestation of his inner power. What sort of magic could Tara do without one? She said her mother had been a powerful witch that had taught her everything she knew, but how much could that have been, if it didn't involve using a wand? Unless the women of her family were so powerful they did not need a wand... Could it be that lost in the muggle morass of California there was a forgotten family of witches with a different way of doing magic? What an amazing curiosity that would be!

"Never needed a wand? My dear girl, that's impossible? How do you cast your spells? How do you focus your magical power? If what you say is true, I must see what you can do!"

The blatant confusion in Snape’s demeanor made the blond witch shift slightly. Why was this so surprising? Tools were useful and honestly sometimes needed in spells but at the same time weren’t always required. Sure when rituals were done, or when a spell specifically required something, but there were plenty of spells that merely required your own focus, a few word and a balancing of the energies around you. Wasn’t that understood by every witch or warlock? The sudden splurging of questions caused the blond witch to blink for a moment before she summed up all the answers to his questions in her mind.

“N-no, I, um, never needed one.” She paused for a moment before continuing. “Well, um, with rituals, i-incantations, summoning of inner energies and, um, balancing of the e-energies around me.” Shifting Tara wrung her hands together slightly. “I-I could, um, show you a-a couple, um, small spells I, um, guess.” The blond witch offered up a weak smile to the man not sure what else to do.

Minutes earlier, Snape had been imagining that their conversation was almost through, that he was soon to be off planning magic lessons and calling on this young woman in a couple of days to get her properly acquainted with normal magical culture. Now, however, faced with the irresistibly fascinating offer of a display of wandless magic, Snape could not leave. Tara sounded completely serious about her ability. Either she would fail to do what she claimed, and be exposed as a fraud, or she would succeed, and Snape would be witness to a true marvel.

"By all means. I would like nothing more than to observe your practice."

Crossing his arms, Snape gave the self-proclaimed witch room and watched to see what she could do. He would be very disappointed if he were to find out she was merely a muggle with a good imagination.

With the invitation in hand Tara nodded, what would be something simple that would easily work? Thinking for a moment the blond witch then decided on what she could do that would be assured to work. A slight smile pulled at her lips as the Wicca decided the perfect spell to cast. With a wave of her hand and a few words in latin tiny tinker-bell light appeared in front of them. With a simple wave of her hand Tara controlled the lights path, allowing it to float about in figure eights before smiling shyly at the man.

“I-it’s a, um, r-really simple spell but it’s, um, the first thing that c-came to mind.”
