Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Marcus and Jareth
WHAT: A confrontation
WHEN: A week after the painful separation
WHERE: The castle at the heart of the Goblin City

Marcus stood on the stone steps, banging the butt of his pike against the heavy wooden door. "Come out and face me, Jareth, you monster!" he bellowed. "Show yourself and answer for what you've done, fiend!" The space behind the door resounded with the booming of his aggression. He was so close. He wasn't going to let it end here.

After Marcus had shaken off his despair at the loss of his beloved Tonks, that emotion had been replace by anger and determination. Anger at the cruel act that Jareth must have knowingly committed, and determination to find the monarch and let him have a piece of his mind. He had realized that there was no point in moping about in a world without Tonks. Either he would force the Goblinking to bring Tonks back, he would persuade him to send him to where she was, or he would die trying. Driven by these emotions, he had gone back to the Labyrinth and continued the trip that had been so quickly interrupted the first time.

Jareth must have known he was coming. The threats were many and the situations dire. Marcus did not believe he was blessed, but he knew he was driven and there was nothing he would let stand in the way of the confrontation he had chosen. Finally, bruised, battered, scratched, and sore, the Ranger stood triumphantly before the front door of the man who held his salvation in his power.

To be honest, Jareth had gotten a little sick of the whole thing. Yes, it had been fun to bring all these people from their various worlds, but the novelty had mostly worn off. And he was getting distinctly annoyed of all these people falling in love. Most of the people he'd sent back had been for that reason, because their feelings for each other irritated him. The little vampire boy and his redheaded telepath lover, for example, they had had to go. And the bright-haired witch with her unborn baby, no doubt she had to go.

He'd become aware some time ago that the Ranger, the one with the dark hair and bright eyes, the lover of the witch, had been coming to him. It amused him slightly to watch and to throw things in his path to delay him. He could feel the frustrated and anger radiating off the man, and, as always, he was impressed with Marcus won through to the castle gates. And he'd done it all alone, which hadn't happened since Sarah.

The gates flew open with just a dramatic gesture of his hand, and he stood there, an imposing figure despite how slender he was. Hands on hips, head tilted to the side, he looked at the interloper with a sort of amused tolerance. "And what would you have with the Goblin King, mortal?"

The door had swung open just as the Ranger had been about to pound it again with the butt of his pike. Standing on the stoop, arms raised to strike, Marcus' expression of surprise was quickly replaced by a glare of anger directed at the haughty man in front of him.

He could almost hate him, the Goblin King, with his confident stance, arms akimbo, and that sneer of superiority never far from his lips. Marcus sensed that the man had no compassion, not interest in anything but his own amusement. Still, he had to try.

"I think you know, O great and powerful Jareth. You have taken from me that which is most precious, and I would have it back. If that is impossible, I would at least have an answer as to why you did it."

Jareth watched, and, for just a split second, there was an emotion on his face. It was impossible to read just what it was in that tiny amount of time, but it certainly wasn't the smirk he often wore. Obviously, however much, for however long it had been, something Marcus had said got to Jareth.

Still, it was over soon. He pursed his thin lips and considered for a long time. "I'm not bringing her back." Obviously, he did know what the other man was talking about. "So it would be best if you were to just give up on that entirely."

With swift, confident, sure steps, he approached the angry ranger, apparently having no fear, or regard whatsoever, for the pike he wielded. "Marcus Cole, I'm going to give you what most people don't get when they deal with the King of the Goblins. You have a choice. Will you go home and help your friends in their war, or will you choose your witch and baby, and go to London?"

Marcus had not been expecting to get the reaction from Jareth that he did. He had not, of course, been expecting the Goblin King to cower and comply, but he would not have been surprised if Jareth had laughed in his face and dismissed him. In truth, the Ranger had not been sure if he would get any reaction at all. He was so surprised that, for a moment, he forgot to stop glaring defiantly.

As he turned Jareth's words over in his mind, at first he was full of wonder at the offering. Then the pain of the choice struck him. In a way,it was a cruel choice to be given; but, ultimately, it was not Jareth who had given it. The decision about where Marcus and Tonks should go, if ever they were to leave first Mirage and then the Labyrinth, had come up between the lovers since first they joined themselves to each other. All Jareth was doing was forcing the issue. And after all, it wasn't as if Marcus would rather have the choice taken away from him.

Of course, that did not make the decision any easier. The Ranger's loyalty to the organization he had made the cornerstone of his life was as strong now as it had been the day he had been taken to Mirage, and he knew that the war that was coming in the galaxy was exactly what that organization had trained him for, exactly what he had been seeking to repay his debt to his brother and family. His love for Tonks, however, was equally as strong. He had waited his entire adult life for a woman like her, a woman to whom he could give his heart, and his body, a woman with whom he would build the rest of his life.

After a seemingly-eternal agony of deciding, Marcus knew he had made the right choice. He lowered his pike as a gesture of surrender and trust.

"I will go to London."

The words of the ranger hurt him, though he didn't show it. Around him, everyone was falling in love, and it infuriated him on some level. That was why he'd sent many people back to their own worlds, just to get them away so that he didn't have to look at them being happy. He hadn't known it would all affect him like this, but it had, and he was just petty enough to act the way he had.

But the true feelings that Marcus had shown him had impressed him, on some level. So, while he could have easily sent the man back to his own home, or into the middle of a black hole, for that matter, he didn't. He would abide by the choice that Marcus had made, he would respect the choice that the ranger had made.

Which didn't mean he had to be gracious about it. He sneered slightly as he held up his hand and gestured. "Love is such a foolish emotion. It leads you to betray your home. I could tell you what is happening on Babylon 5. I won't. You've made your choice." A crystal appeared in his hand, balanced on his fingertips, and he held it up for inspection. "Here is your witch." Tonks appeared in the crystal. "Go." With that single word, he threw the crystal right at Marcus. The ball expanded as it flew threw the air, and by the time it reached Marcus, it was large enough to easily suck him in, move him between worlds.
