Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:complete, day two, jack harkness, rose tyler

WHO: Jack Harkness & Rose Tyler
WHEN: Day Two, evening
WHAT: Two very old friends finally run into each other. Unexpectedly.
WHERE: Ren Faire. Why, no, Jack isn't checking out men in tights.
RATING: TBA
STATUS: Complete

Day one was mostly a blur as far as Jack Harkness was concerned. He'd gotten his key and his diary, met an interesting bloke or five and had quickly escaped to the room he was provided. Stuck in the middle of nowhere, with absolutely nothing familiar. No Hub, no Cardiff, no nothing.

While Jack may have been used to this whole bounding about through the galaxy thing he certainly didn't fancy being plucked from his bed and tossed to universes unknown. Rather rude if you asked him.

Still, after spending the whole of the first day in his room, prodding at his wrist strap and hoping that the King's warning about never leaving was nothing more than an empty threat (because, really, a 'space hopper' should have been enough to get him out of here), Jack knew he had to get out before he drove himself bonkers. The second day brought exploration, still meeting others and trying to make the best of the situation. By mid-evening, Jack found himself at the Ren Faire -- which wasn't a bad place to be as far as Jack was concerned.

Men in tights and women wearing corsets. It was a dream come true.

The day had been...well, pleasant might've been giving it a bit too much credit. But it hadn't been completely dreadful, either. Tonks had been so kind and friendly that Rose had, reluctantly, taken to her right away. And, with that bit of hope brewing under the surface, Rose allowed herself to get immersed in the atmosphere around her. She had to eat, after all. When strangers noticed you were looking a bit peckish, it was time to try and stay on your feet. And, if she happened to take in the sights and the jousting as well, then so be it.

She chose to carry her food around, rather than settle in one place. Somehow, it felt strange to stay still too long there. As if she'd be caught doing something wrong and punished, despite only minding her own business. But in picking at the food on her plate, she tended to lose herself. And when she glanced up, she felt her stomach turn over.

It was him again. That bloke that looked far too much like Jack. Older, perhaps, around the eyes at least and possibly even better built than Jack had been. He definitely looked the sort that could dance with a girl on an invisible spaceship in the middle of London and sweep her off her feet. But Jack was dead, and damn this man for looking like him. The last thing she needed was reminders of the past; wasn't it enough that if the King was telling the truth, she'd never see her mum or her dad or Tony again? Wasn't it enough that, despite at least a dozen attempts to make it to the right universe at the right time, she kept missing the Doctor? Did she have to be haunted by Jack Harkness, too?

She caught herself staring a moment too long, then cleared her throat. "Sorry," she mumbled, in case she'd been caught. "Sorry, I'll just be moving on, then." Not necessarily to anyone in particular, but the words were spoken out loud just the same. She really did have to stop that.

He may not have been happy with his surroundings and being taken so abruptly, but Jack was determined to have a good time. Particularly if there was to be no hope in rescue or escape. Left Jack with one of two alternatives: be stuck and be miserable, or be stuck and try to make a decent go of it. Jack was going to take the latter choice. Besides, with the rate of people arriving, it was fairly likely that he'd manage to find others like himself. He didn't hold out much hope to see certain people, but one never knew.

Jack knew he was desperate when he wouldn't mind seeing John again. Two days away from Cardiff and he was already thinking of the psycho in fond terms. Didn't matter if, in the end, he had helped them -- the man was still psychotic. That bit would never change.

And so, before he got any more maudlin, Jack focused on the Ren Faire, and the beautiful men wandering around. Not all of them were Jack's type (yes, he had a type), but he could browse. At some point, Jack had stopped at a vendor, picking out something to eat. Mutton -- not exactly his first choice for meat, but it would do. He rubbed the back of his neck, wondering why on earth he had worn the coat out in thisweather. Because, Jack knew, the greatcoat was too much a part of who he was and in a strange world? Jack needed all the reminders he could get. Throughout his walk he'd felt someone staring at him. Yet, every time he turned, he couldn't spot who it was.

Odd.

Jack kept trying to watch over his shoulder, hoping to catch a glimpse of who was watching him. Or, maybe, they were staring because of the idiot wearing a wool greatcoat in such warm weather. Still, this didn't feel like a mocking glance, rather, it was someone watching him. Jack turned quickly enough this time, spying the woman. Blonde hair. No. No.

Couldn't have been her. Rose Tyler? Here? Jack didn't have that kind of luck. Still, he spoke her name before he could stop himself.

"Rose...?"

He knew her name? Bugger, she really was off her rocker if she thought Jack Harkness lookalikes were speaking to her. Too much sun that day, perhaps, or maybe the food was too rich. Or...something. Anything.

"Um, yes?" Rose replied, looking warily at the person who'd spoken. If she'd only daydreamed he was talking to her, she was going to feel like a bigger loser than before. Maybe she'd have been better off just taking the meal to her room. It wasn't so bad there. Four walls, a bed. She could do with a bit more sleep. Yes, that had to be it. Sleep was all she needed to get this crazy notion out of her mind.

And yet, she couldn't pull her eyes away. God, he looked just like him, right down to the damnedable dimples. But that was impossible. He'd been exterminated. And as far as she could tell, none of the people around her were dead. That would be more than awkward, wouldn't it?

Then again, it wouldn't be the first time she'd seen the dead come back to life. Damn again. "Can I help you?"

Rose's reaction to him stopped Jack fast in his tracks. Why on earth was she looking at him as if she'd seen a ghost? That phraseology gave him pause as Jack damn near skidded to stop, looking at her curiously. Was it possible that she didn't know what she had done on Satellite 5? Jack assumed when he was left behind as he was (no, he was never going to let that go), the Doctor had explained things.

What if he hadn't? What if the Doctor had left him there amongst all the Dalek dust, took Rose and the TARDIS, and never said a word. True, the next time he saw the Doctor, it had been Martha he was travelling with, Rose deposited elsewhere.

God, what if she didn't know?

Why hullo, Rose! Remember me? The captain you danced with while the bombs fell on London? Yep, alive and kicking thanks to you and absorbing the Time Vortex.Nope, you didn't know because the Doctor is damned annoying and apparently keeps one too many things to himself.

Yeah, perhaps not the best opening line in the world.

"Well, well, well. Rose Tyler. As I live and breathe." Jack flashed her a grin. "I think you can help me." Jack bit his lower lip, still managing a smile.

Rose blinked. There was really no other reaction she could muster. It had to be him, and yet, alternatively, it couldn't be. Christ, what was this place? Transporting the dead, too?

He knew her name, though. Her full name, and she knew she hadn't dropped that anywhere in this God-forsaken place. It was too much, she rarely let anyone in on her given name as it was. All the universes she'd deposited herself in, through all of them she only let herself be known as Rose, if that. And this bloke? This bloke that looked so much like Jack that it froze her in place, knew it all.

"Can... Can I? How do you-- How can I?" she murmured, stuttering and more quiet than she'd been since she'd arrived. Because really, what was she supposed to do, throw herself at him in a giant hug as she'd rather have liked to? It just couldn't be, things didn't work in her favor that way!

All Jack could do was watch her stutter and sputter about. Funny how something so simple as that could make him feel completely at home. Yes, this was definitely one Rose Tyler. Jack knew full-well it could have been someone who looked, dressed and acted like her, but there was no mistaking Rose. Never in a million.

Jack frowned slightly, though still managed to keep the look of the flirt. Half pout-half smile, it was a look he'd perfected over the centuries. Jack just watched her for a moment, letting her stutter about until he could get a word in.

"I mean, you are Rose, aren't you?" He asked, lifting an eyebrow in her direction. "Certainly look like her, though I always thought the Union Jack shirt was quite fetching."

Oh hell, oh hell, oh hell. There was... He had to... Only Jack would've known about that blasted shirt, accidentally worn during the middle of the London Blitz. She was feeling weak-kneed suddenly, and she shook her head desperately. "Not possible," she whispered, then glared. "Who the hell are you? You're not... He's dead and you can't be him so what sort of...of thing are you?"

But the fecking thing had Jack's eyes. And that goofy smile he wore when he thought he was charming the pants off of someone (and usually, he was). And for God's sake, even the freaking eyebrow lift.

Though there was always the chance he was an alien. She knew there were some that could take the shape of others. But why Jack, and how had the only one in the entire galaxy that looked like him happen to find her? "You just...can't be."

Jack cocked his head to the side ever so slightly, staring at Rose. So... the Doctor had never told her. She thought he had been Exterminated by the Daleks on Satellite 5. She never, ever knew that he had come back, nor, obviously did she know about his other little talent. This was going to take some explaining. Shame they were amongst a crowd, explanations of Time Vortexes and immortality were likely to turn a few heads.

"I, not he, Rose," Jack said gently. "I was, but not now. As for what I am? Well... that's anyone's guess anymore. I'm not even sure what I am to be completely honest."

Hands tucked in the pockets of his trousers, pushing aside the greatcoat, Jack looked at her with that same eyebrow raise. "And why can't I be?"

Bugger. "Wait, wait. It's really you? Oh, God..." She closed her eyes, inhaling deeply. This was insane. Wonderful, but completely insane. "What the hell do you mean you were but not now? How is that even an option! And you could've told me that, that's just... Oh for Heaven's sake."

And with that, she slapped him gently in the arm. Seconds later, her emotions won over, and Rose snagged him in a tight hug, clinging as if he was the only normal human left on whatever this awful place was. And for all she knew, maybe he was. Dead or not. "You can't be because you were gone and then we were gone and then it's just not possible, alright?"

However, her words were muffled into the fabric of the coat he wore. At the moment, she didn't care one bit about how silly or weak she might look. She just needed to know he was really, truly in front of her. Or, well, smothering her, perhaps.

Really, laughing at Rose's reaction was probably the worst thing Jack could have done. But he couldn't help the chuckle that escaped his lips as she talked out the whole thing. And he still cursed the Doctor for not telling her. Loved the man, but still cursed him at the same time.

About to chastise her for smacking him, Jack soon found himself with an arm-full of Rose. Grinning, he wrapped his arms around Rose, and held her close. Seeing someone he knew just made this place so much easier. He had someone he could confide in. This wasn't going to be so bad after all.

After a long moment, Jack took the slightest step back, cupping Rose's face in his hands and smiling down at her. "It's really me. Come on, do you think anyone could possibly duplicate this level of charm?" The corner of his mouth quirked up a bit further. "It is possible. And, actually, I have you to thank for it." Jack paused. "What do you remember of Satellite 5?"

He had a point there, and Rose had to laugh, though she would be lying if she said there weren't tears in that laugh. It was a relieving feeling, knowing that something there finally made sense. Well, save for him being dead and then him not being dead and apparently her having something to do with it.

"Not much," Rose admitted, closing her eyes for a moment. Mostly to keep from looking into those eyes for too long. It was true, Jack would never lose his charm. And while her heart still resided in one place, she was a huge mess of emotions and that crazy git who'd rescued her from some stupid barrage balloon could still hold her gaze longer than most. "S'all sort of fuzzy, really. I just knew I needed to get back there, but the TARDIS...it was like it was dead without him. And Mickey helped, and Mum... And there was a load of light and then voices and..." She shook her head, clearing it of the buzzing that typically occurred when she tried to remember the events of that day. She knew a lot of it had been wiped from her memory by the Doctor in order to save her from the overwhelming task of holding the heart of the TARDIS in her human mind.

"What's that got to do with the fact that my dead mate is standing in front of me as alive as I am?" she asked, a hint of her old sass returning as she finally dared to look back up at him.

If Jack had to wind up god knows where, there certainly were worse people he could have wound up with. Namely that one ex of his... never really learned the true meaning of the words 'it's over'. But Rose? Oh, Rose. Jack could have done far worse. And god was she a comfort to see. A sight for sore eyes and any other clichéd phrase he could possibly think of.

With Rose, the charm just came naturally. Well, charm always came natural to Jack, but with some people it was just easier. There was a part of him that could see what there was between her and the Doctor, though it hadn't stopped him from flirting with her. Hell, there was very little that would keep him from flirting with anything and anything. Still, there was a part of him that would always flirt with her, no matter what. She was Rose. The woman he'd danced with near Big Ben during the London Blitz. You didn't forget something like that.

"I'm not surprised," Jack said, shaking his head ever so slightly. "If it were me, I'd probably have done the same. Though, apparently, a few important salient details didn't make their way to you."

Jack glanced around, deciding that people weren't paying any attention to them. Still, he offered his arm to Rose, wanting to get out of the sunlight and into a far more private place. "Where to, my fair lady?" He asked. "I'll get you there and then we can talk."

Almost as if it were completely normal for them to be walking around some idiot version of Medieval Banquet surrounded by people from different parts of the universe and creepy goblin things, Rose took Jack's arm, leaning against him in a friendly manner.

"Anywhere you please, Captain," she offered, the first truly happy smile crossing her face in days. Oh, sure, she'd given a tiny smile or two while talking to the girls in the journals, and she'd actually had a good time spending the day with Tonks. But here and now with a genuine friend from her time and her place? It didn't get better than that, did it? "No real specifics, I guess. We can talk wherever, you know. Don't think anything would surprise this lot."

At that point, she didn't even care if him being there was completely impossible. The fact was, he was there. And damn, if she hadn't needed it. If she had to be torn apart from everything she knew twice, at least she had someone on her side.

"Look at you," she commented, glancing him over with a smile. "All dressed up and no place to go. Last time I saw you, you were decked out in leather. Not that I minded," she added a bit sheepishly, before a slight giggle escaped.

Grinning, Jack laid his hand over Rose's, turning, greatcoat swirling behind him. He wore the clothes, the clothes didn't wear him. Jack headed in the direction of his rooms, a bounce in his step that hadn't been there before. People around to chat up? Wonderful. Someone he knew? Fucking fantastic.

True, she did have a point that no one would probably care about the specifics he had to tell her. But old habits died hard, and when you spent the majority of your life working for a secret organisation, one didn't often talk about the 'specifics' in front of others. Hell, they never talked in front of others.

"May not surprise, but you know me," Jack said with a wink. "Old military habits die hard."

It felt wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. He may have still been reeling from the deaths of Owen and Tosh, but to regain one who had been l ost to him? It meant the world to Jack. Squeezing her hand ever so slightly, Jack made his way through the city and towards his room.

"All dapper and proper now," Jack said, inclining his head ever so slightly. "The leather tends to chafe after a while. Not that I don't mind it, but when you're running through the streets of Cardiff, running after Weevils and other aliens? With all the fighting, trousers tend to get torn and it gets bloody damned expensive after a while."

Rose groaned at his 'old military habits' comment. Granted, she didn't know his past as well as she probably should have. He didn't talk much about the real him, only the con-man that had occurred afterwards. "Maybe so, hot shot, but I've met witches and warriors and some guy who looks like he spent too long on that program with the tattoos and all. This place is...like nothing I've ever seen." She grinned up at him, then, a mischievous look in her eyes. "And we both know I've seen quite a bit!"

Including him. Alive and well, and...proper. He'd always had a dose of dashing; she'd found him in the bleeding 1940s, after all. But now, looking every bit the captain he claimed to be? Well, it was definitely a sight she hadn't prepared herself for.

But he'd said something that had sparked her interest and she peeked up with a hopeful look. "Weevils? Aliens? What other sorts? And for that matter, what the hell's a Weevil? Like, the lesser of two?" She snickered at her own corny joke and leaned her head carelessly against his shoulder. This was almost too perfect. The earth would be opening up and swallowing her whole or she'd be confronted by Cybermen or something. Any second now, it had to. This almost felt good. And that couldn't happen, not here.

And when Rose had met Jack, it had been at the height of his 'con-man' days. He may have taken the name of an RAF captain, but he had been banking on charm and good looks to get through the 1940s. It was only after Rose had changed him that he had become a new man. Taking control of Torchwood at the turn of the century (and even his involvement with the organisation through the previous hundred years) had changed the rest. Now, the title of Captain truly did fit him.

"Oh I don't know," Jack said, checking out a couple of performers as they walked by. "Might not be like anything either of us have ever seen, but it sure is beautiful to look at, you have to give it that." Would be nice to have the Hub around to really be able to analyse just what this place was. Guess they'd just have to do it the old fashioned way... whatever that was.

Jack whipped his head to the side, almost glaring at Rose. "Y'know, I thought I was the only one with the license to make bad puns." Jack dug through a pocket, finding the psychic paper and holding it up, knowing full well his mind was wandering to the thoughts of I still work out rather than Captain Jack Harkness. Punner Extraordinaire.

Hand around her shoulders, Jack led them back to his quarters and up to his room. With a smile that was half innocent and all Jack, he opened the door, extending his arm for her to go first. "After you, milady," he said, waggling his eyebrows at her.

"Oh, for God's sake, you never change, do you?" she commented, giggling to herself as his head jerked about checking out anything that moved. She was already prepared to wager that some weren't even human, but that had never slowed Jack down before.

Rose giggled even harder when she read the paper in his hand. She'd needed this. And desperately so. "No idea what you want that to say, love, but the abdominals under that shirt support it, I think." A wink backed up her statement and she snickered on being led to his dormitory.

"Were you here yesterday?" she asked, considering how settled in he seemed to be as he held the door for her. She stepped inside and glanced around with a mere shrug. As she'd figured, there weren't huge differences in the rooms, though knowing Jack, she already needed to be careful where she sat. "I don't remember seeing you. And I'm almost scared to ask if I'm the first brought up here." Another wink and a generous chuckle and she leaned against the wall with a smug expression.

Except she did remember seeing him. Only she'd sworn he was dead and it couldn't have been him. No one had survived Satellite 5, the Daleks had killed everyone on their way up to floor 500. She'd written him off and yet it really was him, and did the man with the roving eyes really miss seeing her in that small crowd? Perhaps, she'd give him the benefit of the doubt if he had. It wasn't as if they hadn't just suffered a huge shock.

Jack gave her a grin that clearly said 'no, he would never change'. Even if there was a possible someone in the mix, he definitely would never change. It was like something ingrained in him and maybe it was embedded in the DNA of a 51st century man. And Jack wasn't sure if they were completely human or not. Didn't really matter in the end, did it?

The laughter was good for them both. Grinning and taking the paper back, sliding it into his pocket, he looked at it one last time before it went into the greatcoat. "Was supposed to be 'Captain Jack Harkness, Punner Extraordinaire'." Jack thumped his abdomen with a smirk. "Abdominals are, if possible, in better shape than the last time you saw them," he said with a slight leer in his voice.

Jack shook his head, slipping the greatcoat off and hanging it up. "Was. I saw Jareth and then got the hell out of there. All right, so I didn't quite believe him that we were stuck here." Jack held up his wrist, pointing at the Manipulator. "Apparently, we are." He grinned, pouring himself into a chair, and gesturing for her to take a seat. "Surprisingly, you are. Figured I'd give myself at least a couple of days to give myself the lay of the land." Beat pause. "Pun intended."

He hadn't seen her on the first day, and if he had, he would have latched to her. The, at last, familiar face around here. Finding her on day two, however, was quite doable. At least he'd found her. That was the important bit, wasn't it?

Jack drew his lips into a thin line, arm resting on the back of the chair as he lifted a foot, resting his heel against the cushion. "I look pretty good for a dead man, don't I?" Jack asked softly, carefully watching her face. "Looks like the Doctor failed to mention a few things."

One day he'd learn not to use the psychic paper with her. He wasn't very good on concentrating when it was in her presence, apparently. "Well, I for one am very pleased to hear the state of your muscle tone hasn't been affected by the years we've been apart," she began, but she was slightly more disturbed by his comment about not being able to use his transporter.

Rose took the seat across from him, looking considerably less comfortable. And even more so when he dropped his giant statement that probably should've been funny, but couldn't be considering the subject. "That's not funny," she admonished, her lips straightening into a tight, thin line. "The last time I saw you, you were kissing me goodbye and marching off to your death. No one survived that battle, Jack, I'm not stupid. I may not remember what was left when I got up there but..."

She shook her head, tears involuntarily springing to her eyes. "I've fought those damn things over and over and they've taken so much away from me and yet...you're here. And I know it's you because no one could impersonate you like this but... But then, it doesn't really seem like you, either. Like... Hell, I don't know, a different you, somehow." What was wrong with her? She was babbling to just about anyone who'd listen today, wasn't she? But then, after a year of near silence, maybe Rose was overdue to talk to someone who'd really listen.

Perhaps, one day, Jack would learn better than to use his psychic paper on her. But it was hard to keep his mind on things properly when it was Rose standing before him. Oh, he'd always had one helluva weakness for her. "Can always show you if you want further proof," Jack said with a wink.

Pausing while she entered the room, sitting across from him, Jack grew silent when he saw the look on her face. For years Jack had learned to greet the situation with humour, but never quite realised how others would take it. The Doctor had known, so it was easy to feign amusement (mixed with annoyanceof being left behind). But Rose... this had to be done differently.

"I know I did. And I did, go to my death, that is." Jack turned, bracing his elbows on his knees. He laced his fingers together, resting his chin on them, giving Rose a long, hard stare. "And I was. Exterminated."

Jack remembered the void. More than any otherdeath, he remembered the first. Remembered being the last man standing, knowing that his death would give the Doctor that many more seconds. Jack swallowed hard, dropping his gaze from Rose's face to the floor.

"I was Exterminated and brought back to life. By the woman who absorbed the heart of the TARDIS." Jack finally lifted his gaze back to Rose's face, eyes searching her face and watching her reactions carefully. "I suppose a couple thousand years would change a man." Jack looked at her squarely, dropping the final bombshell.

"I cannot die."

At first, his words just didn't make sense. And how could they have been expected to. A couple thousand years? Not die?

But it started to come together, and none too pleasantly. The woman who absorbed the heart of the TARDIS. Her. The Doctor had explained it, finally, after she'd recovered from the ordeal and he'd healed from his regeneration, but only briefly. But she knew what she'd done.

Only, apparently, Rose didn't know all that she had done. "Me? I.... How could I have... This isn't making any sense, you do know that, don't you?" No one had survived, but somehow, Jack had come back. Strange, really. Neither of them were supposed to be there at the end of that battle against the Daleks. He was supposed to be dead, Rose had been sent back to Earth during her own time, and the Doctor should've died from his own delta wave, or from extermination. But they'd all lived, despite it all, to tell the tale.

And, apparently, it was because of her. "What do you mean you can't die?" Rose asked bluntly, her voice mixed with concern and skepticism. "Everyone dies. Every thing dies. You've got to, it's a fact of life." Though...he really didn't look any older. Dressed better, certainly, looked more posh and put together. And his eyes. Oh, God. His eyes reminded her of the Doctor's. So much older than his face gave him credit for. "How long have you...been alive for. would you say?"

It was one hell of a bombshell Jack had dropped and this was exactly why he had brought her back to his quarters to tell her. Because he knew the shock that would result and the last thing he wanted was for her to have to deal with this while others were around. Jack kept a careful watch on her, making sure she wasn't going to do anything as dramatic as faint. Jack knew Rose to be made of stronger stuff than that, but still, it was a lot to take in.

"I know it doesn't make sense, Rose," Jack spoke, attempting to keep his tone light but failing miserably. "But it happened. I don't know what exactly you did that day, only however you killed the Daleks, whatever you did wielding the heart of the TARDIS as you did, it changed me." Jack gave her a playful wink. "And here I didn't e ven think one could tamper with perfection like that."

All Jack could do was sigh, shaking his head sadly. A strange expression fell on his face, the same look that had been there when Owen asked him once if his Doctor could fix him. It was the look of a man who had lived through too much and knew he would live through more. "I die," Jack said after a long pause. "I enter the void and then I come back. Like being dragged over broken glass every time." He drew his lips into a thin line. "Including what my brother did to me, I've been alive for two thousand, one hundred fifty-five years... give or take a few years."

She couldn't breathe. Rose inhaled, but didn't feel anything actually happening. She'd done this to him. Over and over he died, and he could never rest in peace, and it was her doing. She'd only meant to save the Doctor, and get back in time for the others if she could. And instead....this. Because she already knew the ways one who could live forever would be cursed. Immortality was no gift.

'You can spend the rest of your life with me, but I can't spend the rest of mine with you.'

The words were still fresh in her mind. Still fresh, and they still hurt, and God, now Jack, too. How many people who'd meant something to him had he had to watch die? "I..." Swallowing hard, she tried again. "I suppose it's a good thing you were never the type to settle down, then," she tried to joke, but somehow, it still felt wrong. It felt horribly, dreadfully, painfully wrong. In the short time they'd traveled together, Rose had grown to love the flirtatious bloke with the American accent. And she'd cursed him, unintentionally, of course, but still!

She couldn't meet his eyes. Burying her face in her hands, she attempted to breathe instead.

The longer Rose fell into silence, the more Jack worried. He didn't like seeing Rose like this: the woman he had seen time and time again was so strong, so unflappable. What other woman would have worn a union jack t-shirt, flying over London during the blitz? True it had been poor timing on her part, but she had still worn it, not found something else.

"Suppose it was," Jack said with a grin that didn't quite meet his eyes. "So many species so little time, I believe the Doctor once said about me. Gives me the chance to try them all on for size."

Jack rose from his chair, moving to kneel in front of Rose. He took her hands away from her face, covering them in his own larger hands. "Rose, look at me," he said, voice taking on a more forceful tone. "I don't blame you for what happened so don't you go blaming yourself either."

She hated when he looked at her like that. All serious-like. Like he was so wise and so smart. Like he knew her. And he did, she supposed. Probably a hell of a lot better than she knew him just then.

Rose pulled one hand away from his, but instead of using it to hide, she reached out and touched his cheek lightly. "You don't deserve this," she said softly, her index finger tracing the lines on his face that were the only sign of aging. And certainly not two thousand years worth of it. "I mean... You deserve to live but... You were a hero that day, Jack. Leading everyone, rallying support. If you'd died...just died, a normal, every day death..."

And yet, would she have traded this? Having him here, being able to hold him and talk to him and have someone on this God forsaken place who actually understood her? She wasn't sure she was selfless enough to say that. "I'm sorry. But then...I'm not sorry, either. Does that make any sense at all?"

But Jack did know her far too well -- at least, most of the time. There were certain people he could read easily and Rose was one of them. There was just something about her that awoke that need and desire to take care of and to protect.

Jack allowed her to pull a hand away, gently squeezing the one that was left in his own. Closing his eyes for a moment, he leaned his head into her too gentle touch, Jack would have given anything to know what she was thinking. Anything. "Dying at the hands of the Daleks is not a normal, everyday death. I've died the normal deaths and the not so normal." He winced, thinking of the javelin.

Turning the hand he held over, Jack brushed his lips across her knuckles. "Yes, it makes sense. For the longest time I cursed this, what had happened to me. And then I realised what a blessing it was at the same time. Here, I can help people. I can do what the Doctor would do. There are times... it's been worth it."

Damn, he was charming. She'd always alternately loved and hated that about him. Slowly coming to terms with the revelation he'd just made, Rose leaned in, kissing his forehead softly. "You're amazing, you do know that, right? God, I thought we'd lost you for good..." She shook her head, but she sat jolt upright a second later.

"Wait a minute," she countered, her eyes narrowing in thought. "Earlier. You said he failed to mention a few things." It was still difficult saying his name, what little she had of it, and so she usually didn't. Maybe with Jack it'd be different, but time would reveal that. "He knew? He knows you're alive?"

If she ever succeeded--well, correction. If she ever got back to her own world and then succeeded in seeing him again, she was going to smack him, and good.

Charming was Jack's middle name. Along with Dashing, Good looking, and humble. Jack closed his eyes as she kissed his forehead, lightly squeezing her hand once more. The last thing he wanted was for her to be blaming herself for what happened. Yes, it was her fault, buthe didn't blame her. And Jack, too, wouldn't have traded what happened for anything. Between Rose and the Doctor, they had made him into a better man.

"Amazing? Oh... I had a fair idea you'd say that. I'm also wonderful and a bloody good dancer too." If only he had his music here. He always thought he was a better dancer than the Doctor, however. But he wouldn't say that aloud to anyone, particularly Rose.

At first, he thought that squinty-eyed look was intended for him and Jack nearly asked what he had done to deserve it. Then, Jack realised he was about to bear the brunt of Rose's annoyance for the Doctor.

"Yes," Jack said with a bitter laugh. "He knew. Didn't tell you and left me behind on Satellite 5 as well. Hell, he never got word to me that you hadn't died at Canary Wharf for that matter. Man rather likes keeping his companions in the dark, doesn't he?"

"If the rubbish I saw today is any indication, you'll have the better dance moves of anyone on this planet," she said without a moment's hesitation. "Granted, the music's not always brilliant. Reminded me of being back in Versailles--which makes it historically inaccurate if they really are going for the medieval period. Anyway..."

Oh, bugger. Here he'd thought she'd died. Only... "But that means you've seen him since," Rose stammered, just as confused than as she'd been to begin with. He hadn't freaked out on seeing her, as she'd done to him. He'd known. Somewhere along the line, he'd run into the man they were both taken in by. But how? How had he found him and she still hadn't? Well, the answer to that must've been obvious. Jack, whatever time period he was from, was at least still in the same universe.

Didn't stop her from being a bit jealous, though. Rose did have a tendency to do that. Be jealous and all. Poor Sarah Jane could testify to that.

Of that, Jack had no doubt. He was the dashing hero and dashing heroes always had the best dance moves, didn't they? Jack arched a brow in Rose's direction about the Versailles comment. "Somehow managed to never hop back to that era," Jack mused, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "So, on that, I'll take your word for it. Though, I'd prefer to be stuck in the medieval period than anything the French have to offer. Powdered wigs do absolutely nothing for my complexion."

It was only at the expression on Rose's face that Jack realised he had said something he oughtn't have said. "I saw him... about a year ago," Jack said. "He and Martha had stopped in Cardiff to refuel and I," stupidly Jack added silently in the breath pause he inserted, "left my team to go with him." Jack shook his head ever so slightly. "Even before, though, he knew I had survived and still left with you." Bitter? Jack? Never. "I was helping him close couplings in a room filled with radiation. The sort of room no one could go in and survive. Something right down my alley."

Closing his eyes, Jack leaned his head back against the chair cushion, getting lost in the memory for a moment. "The end of the Universe. And he said he knew I had survived, had been brought back to life, and yet still left me on that fucking satellite. Alone amongst the Dalek dust."

Rose's mind was reeling. It was a lot to take in anyway, the events of Satellite 5 being far beyond what she'd thought. But everything else he'd just revealed, probably without meaning to.

She wasn't stupid. She knew life had gone on without her in the universe she'd lived in for the first twenty-one years of her life. But hearing about it made it all that much more real. The Doctor had been around over nine hundred years, who was she to think one single, solitary human was going to change his life entirely? God, she was blind, thinking it would've mattered. Of course he'd moved on. Martha? Who was she supposed to be? Had he blown up her job as well? Where'd he pick her up? Did he care about this Martha in the way Rose had thought he cared about her?

And, if all of that was true, why did she still have that need to see him? For the same reason Jack had up and left his team to go with him, she knew. For the faults he did have, the Doctor was an entrancing sort one didn't easily forget.

Oh, Jack. Her sweet, brave, impossible not to love Jack. Rose shook her head with a tired smile, looking him over in a way she never had before. The bravery he had to have had to not only have gone down fighting once, but apparently time and time again. "How'd you manage?" she asked quietly, slowly coming to terms with everything she'd learned in such a short amount of time. "How did you even get out of there? And what've you been doing since? A team? One that actually follows you?" From con-man to leader. Now that was the man she knew.

It was a lot to take in and in such a very short amount of time. Perhaps Jack should h ave eased her into this a bit slower, rather than throw everything at her all at once. But that? That wouldn't have been Jack's style. Besides, with everything they'd been through, Jack would have been fairly disappointed if she couldn't handle all this.

In the silence that stretched between them, Jack tried to read Rose's facial expressions, tried to figure out just what was running through her mind. Had he inadvertently said a very very wrong thing? He supposed it was possible, but there was no way of knowing just what had been so wrong. Jack folded his hands in his lap, trying to look impassive, but knowing full well that a look of concern edged his features. There were very few people who Jack would allowto see his proverbial 'vulnerable side' (and that didn't count the times when something would happen at Torchwood that he couldn't fix).

But it was true. The Doctor was one no one easily forgot. The Doctor was the reason that after a hundred years of field work, he took Torchwood from Alex and had finally gave the organisation purpose. Had rebuilt it following the ideals of the Doctor. The con-man, learning to study first, shoot later.

The look on Rose's face almost confused Jack, his brow furrowing ever so slightly when the question was asked. "At first, I didn't believe it. I got into a brawl on Elis Island and was shot. I woke up the next day. Took more than a few deaths afterwards to realise I couldn't die." A far-away look came over Jack, Jack no longer looking at Rose, but out the window, remembering. "I made one final jump. It's why the wrist strap is now useless. I jumped and managed to the land in the late 1800s. And just... lived all the way through. World War One, World War Two -- serving once more and was, on more than one occasion, the only man to survive."

Shaking himself as if to rid the memory from his mind momentarily, Jack looked back and flashed her a grin. "You'll never believe it when I tell you," He said, a hint of pride in his voice. "Torchwood. And yes, they follow me. Have been since 2000."

Well, if anything was going to make Rose sit at attention, that would. "Torchwood? You? A leader? You're kidding me!" She wore a skeptical expression, but she couldn't hide the smile in it. Slowly, the skepticism melted and only her beaming smile remained. How could she not? He'd come so far and done so much. Somehow, it made being dragged here almost worth it, knowing he was alive and still living through exciting adventures. And for him, not exactly life-threatening.

"Suppose you know--actually, best not to assume anymore with him, isn't it?" she asked with a wry laugh. "Seems we have a bit in common; I'm working Torchwood, too. Not heading my own team or anything--well, sort of. Independent project." An independent project to find him and warn him what was coming. But really, who'd believe that bit? "I can't believe it. I thought Torchwood would've shut down after... Well. Canary Wharf and all."

That was something she didn't particularly want to remember. She'd promised to stay with him till the end, and she would have, if it hadn't been for that one moment. While she was thankful to her dad, she couldn't help wishing it'd gone differently. "Huh. You, running your own Torchwood. Impressive, Captain, I'll grant you that. Then again, how many wars have you served in? It's about time you had some power, isn't it?" Rose leaned back, a casually smug look on her face. In some ways, this was the hardest night she'd ever lived through. But when she thought about it, it was also pretty wonderful. At least she had someone on this wretched planet, whatever exactly it was.

Jack spread his hands wide, grinning at Rose. "Nope, not kidding one whit. The lot forced me to work for them for a good hundred years. They thought I was a bit too, shall we say, unpredictable to stay rogue. Eventually? Made leader." Jack simply glossed over the how part. No need to go into Alex's death, now was there? The fact that he was leader should have been enough.

The laugh almost obscured the main point of Rose's statement and Jack's head snapped sharply towards her when he finally heard it. "You? Working for Torchwood?" Jack asked, eyebrows lifting as high as they would possibly go, practically reaching his hairline. "Well I'll be damned. How did they manage to get their hooks into you?" Jack shook his head ever so slightly. "All that was affected by Canary Wharf was Torchwood London. One of my officers now is one of the few survivors, actually. But Torchwood 3, my Torchwood, had split with London years before the battle. We were unaffected, for the most part."

Softly, Jack tutted, rising from his chair and crossing the room, perching on the armrest of Rose's, slipping an arm around her shoulders. "How many wars? I've lost count," Jack said softly, that rare haunted look entering his gaze. "Suppose it is about time. Just..." Jack sighed softly, turning his head to lightly kiss Rose's temple. "I may lead my men into battle, but it kills a leader to be the only man who returns. Always will return."

Rose found herself leaning automatically into him when he took the spot beside her. He was just so warm, and God it had been cold as of late. The medics thought it might have something to do with the physical effects of ripping the boundaries between dimensions over and over, but Rose typically summed it up to how empty she felt. But it was hard to feel empty with Jack, her Jack by her side. Her hand rested lightly on his knee as she watched him tell his story, his face telling more than his actual words did.

"I didn't plan to be doing it, trust me," she reassured him, but she was smiling just a little. A coincidence, maybe, but a great one. "Didn't know what else to do, though. When I was left there... My dad-he's alive over there, did you know?-anyway, my dad, and Mickey, too, have both been involved with the goings on over there. It's different there. They're more accepting of the paranormal. They have to be, they've seen it firsthand. I didn't know what else to do. I couldn't go back to simply selling ladies' clothing, could I?" The expression on the Doctor's face when she told him that she had was proof enough of that. Rubbing her temples slightly, Rose released a breath. "I had firsthand experience, Mickey told them all about...the traveling. And the things I'd done. Jake, too, we met him over there, cute little thing, too..."

A flicker of a smile crossed her face as she glanced up at Jack. She'd rambled on for far too long already, but he was listening. And there were so few people who truly listened any longer. Her mum did, but never got it. Mickey got it, alright, but he didn't enjoy hearing the words 'The Doctor' anymore than he had when she'd been a part of the Time Lord's life. Jack was the only person she knew who could truly understand the man's pull, and what it had been like having to go on without him.

Truth be told, Jack took as much comfort from Rose leaning against him as she must have felt beside him. Her hand on his knee, Jack took the opportunity to angle his body as close to hers as possible, hand lightly rubbing along her upper arm. Jack had always liked Martha quite a bit, but when you rescued a girl in a Union Jack shirt from the middle of the London Blitz? Well -- some things were hard to top and Rose would always hold a very special place.

"I know you didn't, Rose," Jack said softly. "There was a long time when I wished I could die. Now? Gave me a bit more purpose, I suppose. A second chance to be a bit more like him. He certainly changes anyone's life who travels with him, doesn't he?" Jack did listen, loved hearing Rose talk -- and having someone who truly understood. Rose knew the pull of the Doctor just as much as he did. Knew that, should the man ever ask, they would be there in a heartbeat. Perhaps even less than that. He was enigmatic in a way Jack almost envied.

He simply let her talk, nodding in the right places but never once interrupting her out of turn. "No,I don't think you could," Jack said, leaning his cheek against the top of her head. "The Doctor changes us all. Must be nice, though. A place that has seen and understands the paranormal. "Cute thing? Jake?" Jack asked, ears perking up slightly. "Now, who might he be?

"Though, I can sympathise. I ran away from my team for a year. The last time I saw the Doctor, that is. I left without a word after waiting a good hundred years for him, wanting to know if he knew what happened, if he could fix me. The lot welcomed me back, but a couple..." Jack thought of Ianto and Gwen's reactions. "I know they're not pleased either when the Doctor's name is mentioned."

Changed her life? That was one way to put it. She'd been crazy about him, throwing her heart and soul into working with him, fighting with him, and caring for him. There was little doubt in her mind that she'd have died for him, and many times she almost had. Jack had died for him, even if not permanently.

She gave a weak laugh, though, as Jack perked up over the mention of Jake. "Huge blue eyes, sweet as he can be, tries to act all tough but he's such a great guy. He and Mickey get on really well. You remember Mickey, right?" They'd only met the once, but it had been a relatively significant once. Margaret Blaine and all. "You'd like him, I think. Bad and tough on the outside and marshmallowey on the inside. Sound like anyone else you know?" Smiling, she rested her chin on his arm so she could look up at him. It was probably an ironic thought, but here in this crazy new place, she was more comfortable than she'd been since that horrible day in Canary Wharf.

"They'd love him if they met him," Rose concluded, her voice low. "It's hard not to. Even my mum warmed up to him before it was all over." Which it was. All over. God, here with Jack she'd almost forgotten. As hard as she was trying to find the right dimension, the odds were against her getting there in time. And if she didn't... Sighing, she closed her eyes for a moment.

Jack knew that he would always place himself between danger and the Doctor or Rose. He loved the both of them and, in truth, completely owed his life to them. The decision to travel with them had been an easy one. Between the Doctor's charm and charisma -- and Rose's personality -- how could he have refused?

"Huge blue eyes?" Jack asked, grinning. "If he has dark hair and a Welsh accent, I'm completely sold. Can't help it if I have a weakness for them." Strange, but most of his lovers had tended to look alike. Well, when one found a good match, why break from tradition? Jack snorted softly at the mention of Mickey. "Yes, I remember him. The bloke who thought I was captain of the innuendo squad." Jack shook his head ever so slightly. He'd been none too impressed with Mickey to be quite honest. But he was a friend of Rose's so he'd put on the smile and feign liking him for her sake. Playfully, Jack stuck his tongue out at Rose. "No idea who you're talking about whatsoever. I don't know anyone who fits that description."

She rested her chin on his arm and he shifted enough to almost cuddle against her. It felt good, natural, and so right to be sitting like this. One never realised how much they had missed a person until they were suddenly thrust back into their lives once more. Now, holding Rose against himself, Jack almost didn't want to let go. "God, I've missed you," he found himself saying, realising belatedly that he spoke aloud instead of thinking the sentiment. "Funny, but this place now, suddenly, seems bearable."

Mmm, blokes with dark hair, blue eyes, and Welsh accents did sound impossibly irresistible. Of course, at the moment her focus was on a bloke with dark hair, blue eyes, and an American accent. He'd changed so much, but he was right. After living some two-thousand years, how could he not have?

"Missed you, too," she told him, leaning into him, simply breathing. "Course, I also thought you were dead." Rose laughed a bit sarcastically at that. After all, now that she knew the truth, it was rather funny, wasn't it? In a back-from-the-dead mate sort of way.

But she knew what he meant. For the first time in a long time, she was truly comfortable. Perhaps he wasn't her Doctor. Their Doctor. But having him there helped ease the void. No, she didn't have her mum or her dad, or her precious baby brother. But this was like a piece of home. Her real home, before Torchwood and the ghosts and the war that ripped her from everything she knew. He was a comfort she hadn't expected when landing in this unknown place, but God, was she grateful.

Shifting a bit, Rose moved so her arms were wrapped more firmly around him, even at the awkward angle the chair provided. "It helps," she confirmed, breathing in a scent she now recognized as life. And, the longer one lived it, the longer it became a part of them. She'd learned that over years of travel with one who'd lived his own number of years. "Having you here? It really, really helps."

Given Jack's track record with them, they were impossible to resist. He had tried, failed and had over the course of the years resigned himself to his fate. Truth be told, Jack wondered how he would have been in terms of his personality had he not encountered the Doctor and Rose -- but decided very quickly that it was something he didn't want to contemplate.

"I'll let you in on a secret," Jack murmured, tipping her head up ever so slightly."Until I saw the Doctor again, I thought you were too. I thought Canary Wharf had been your end. Never saw your name, but still..." He had been afraid that she'd been a victim of that whole debacle and he would have (figuratively speaking) wanted to kill himself if he let anything happen to her.

No, he wasn't their Doctor but in a sense, he was as close to the man as they'd get at the present. If both of them had been caught up in all of this, perhaps it was possible for others to come. Jack wouldn't turn down an opportunity to see the Doctor again. Not in the slightest.

Jack nudged Rose ever so slightly, moving her to the side so h e could fully sit on the chair, pulling her into his arms when the armrest wasn't making itself intimately known. (And, really, to dig into his arse like that, he should be bought dinner first.) Jack carded his fingers through her hair, taking as much comfort from their closeness as she most likely was. "I agree Rose Tyler," Jack said, closing his eyes and resting his cheek against her temple. "Not that it isn't easy to strike up friendships? Or... anything else besides," He said, laughing. "But I'd choose you and the Doctor anyday to travel with. Or be stuck in the middle of some godforsaken universe." The laugh turned bitter for a moment. "At least there aren't any Daleks around. Thank god for small favours."

Rose curled up against him automatically. He was awfully warm for a dead man. Her arms slid around his middle and her head buried against his chest. It was an instinctive move, like a child seeking comfort while wounded. "I did die," she whispered, the words spoken against his chest. "As far as your world is concerned, Mum and I both died that day. We're on the list of the dead, if you read." And a part of her really had died. Maybe not in the physical sense, but she'd been entirely numb since she'd been left on the other side of the wall. Little made her happy anymore, with the exception of watching Tony play or working on her dimension cannon.

She absently rubbed circles into those previously discussed well-worked abdominals, finding comfort in any sort of touch. "I've met some pretty strange people here," she admitted, though a tiny, tired smile played across her features. "But some really wonderful ones, too. Some of them seem really...nice. Is it wrong to admit that?" It felt like she ought to hate everyone involved in this world keeping her from her mission. But she couldn't, because some of them had been so bloody accepting, and who was she to fight that? It was like the old days, really, finding a new adventure in a new world and meeting the people and acclimating to them there.

Carefully, she swung her legs over the tops of his so she was all but nestled in his lap. But really, there was only so much room in the chair and they both should be comfortable, after all. "Kinda missed this, you know." She'd loved it, annoying the Doctor hand in hand with Jack. Sure, part of her had hoped it was making him jealous, but having Jack on board had also been a bit like having her very own playmate and cuddle buddy.

Everything about Jack was extremely warm-blooded, thank you very much. The dead part had nothing to do with it. He just couldn't die, that didn't mean that he was a walking zombie or anything -- that was Owen's gig, not his. The words she spoke may have been muffled but Jack could make them out. No, he had seen the lists -- had seen her name, he was too used to lying and too used to making others believe what he wanted them to. "I know," he finally said, voice soft. He'd felt a part of himself die when he read her name and he had no desire to relive that feeling.

Jack made a sound of contentment in the back of his throat as her hands moved across his stomach. It felt better than he expected it to, this contact between them. He closed his eyes, breathing in her scent and just taking comfort. "No, it's not wrong to admit that. We've both met people spread all across the galaxies and there isn't anything wrong with saying some of them are nice. Hell, too? If we're stuck here with them, may as well make friends." Though, truth be told, Jack's definition of 'friends' was very different from most.

She swung around and one of Jack's hands came to rest on her arse, pulling her in close. And maybe his hand stayed there, getting in a quick grope as well. Jack was only human -- if an immortal one at that. "Missed it too," Jack replied, his other arm wrapping around her, that pesky hand on her arse giving another squeeze. Yes, Jack was shameless and he knew it. "Hell, I was afraid I'd never see you again. Having you here? Is just bloody fantastic."

Rose gave a tiny yelp, but was too weak from the night's revelations to do anything in retaliation but giggle and roll her eyes. "Scoundrel, indeed," she scolded, but her head still found a place in the crook of his neck and she didn't make any sort of effort to pull away. In fact, she sort of welcomed the contact, no matter how impish it might've been. It'd been an awfully long time since she'd let anyone touch her, especially so intimately. If she allowed too much physical comfort, it would make the whole ordeal real. She snuggled Tony, partially because he was just a baby and had no control over her life, and partially because he hadn't been there when the world had fallen apart on her. And, from time to time, when she desperately needed it, she'd fall into Jackie's arms, exhausted and weary. Even Mickey's attempts at comfort were shrugged off, and she'd known him nearly her whole life.

"I guess if we're stuck here, there are worse people I could be stuck with," she teased, breathing in that smell that was distinctly Jack. She'd grown to rely so much on her senses, and scent had become a huge one for her. Perhaps it was the way the Doctor had always been able to gain clues about everything by his sense of smell, or maybe it was just her strongest point, but it was a bit easier. "I mean, witches? Please, I can deal with that. 51st Century Time Agents? Tolerable." So long as they were Dalek-free, she figured she was making out just fine.

Her eyes closed slightly as she listened to the steady beat of his heart. It wasn't that long hoped-for rhythm of two hearts beating in time together, but it was nearly as good considering the fact that his heart was beating at all, and she'd been so afraid it wasn't. "You're terribly comfortable, you know that? S'like, you should be all hard and uncomfy, being all muscle, but you're not." And now she was rambling, and would likely regret it in the morning, but he'd seen her during some pretty miserable times, so this couldn't be much worse.

That, however, didn't stop her from reaching behind her and moving his hand up slightly to the small of her back. A sly smile played on her face, though she never opened her eyes.

Jack knew that there was very little that he could do that would cause Rose to pull away. Outside of openly groping her front -- which, well, tempting but he didn't fancy the accompanying slap. Not when they were the only ones here and he needed Rose for companionship. So he'd refrain from the open groping and just go for the hand on the arse.

"I could think of a couple people," Jack replied, mind instantly picturing the Master or an army of Daleks. Those, though, were definitely the worst case scenarios. "Besides, things are always more fun when I'm here, aren't they?" He asked, lightly rubbing her back, his cheek resting against her hair. The scent was so uniquely Jack-- the 51st century pheromones he had always teased Ianto about. "Us Time Agentsare only tolerable?" Jack asked. "I think I should be offended."

Jack smiled, resting back against the chair and arranging Rose all the more comfortably in his lap. He honestly had no intention of moving for quite some time and Jack had a feeling Rose felt the same way."Oh, I've heard it once or twice," Jack said with a chuckle. "Or maybe that's a couple hundred times. A man loses track after a while." Grinning, Jack tightened his arms around Rose, taking as much comfort from their closeness as he could. "It's all in where the muscle is," Jack said. "And, surprisingly, I look even better now under all this than I did on Satellite 5. You'll have to investigate."

Rolling his eyes as she moved his hand, he let it rest there for a moment before moving it back to her arse. "For support, y'see," he said, even though his grin was lost. Jack may not have been able to drift off to sleep, but he didn't mind serving as a warm-blooded body pillow either.

She was too comfortable to argue, and she knew Jack would never hurt her. Tease her to the point of her smacking him, yes, but never push his advantage. Besides, why would he, he could smile at most anything that moved and get his way. She was hardly worth all of that!

"I'll get around to that investigating at some point," she informed him, stifling a yawn as she buried her face against the soft, strong chest. "Course, always found you attractive. Even in those silly vests." Maybe the 51st century had a different dress style than they did. Or maybe Jack just liked the way those awful things clung to just the right spots. It worked, after all.

"Going to kick me out?" she questioned, glancing up at him with a small smile. One hand reached up to touch his cheek, taking comfort in the fact that he was warm and he was real and he was there. "Do me a favour, though? Don't mention that place again. I want to pretend it didn't happen." That day had cost her so much. She'd even lost her Doctor, even if he had been switched with a new model, so to speak. She'd thought Jack long dead, and she could easily remember the horror and fear at being held captive by a species she knew to be the Doctor's worst enemy. It was definitely on the list of days she didn't want to remember.

Well, as far as Jack was concerned, he'd never push Rose to the point of wanting to smack him. Because he was that damned cute and that irresistible. And, really, who was to say that she wasn't worth all of that? Rose held a very large hold on his heart and had since he found her floating above London. Yes, others occupied his heart as well, but Rose had her own corner.

"Silly waistcoats?" Jack asked, raising a brow. "Are you saying you like the braces better? I'll try and find a couple of those waistcoats just for you, y'know. If it'd make you feel better and more at home." Yes, he knew she found him attractive. Anything did so that bit went without saying and no, Jack Harkness didn't have an ego whatsoever.

Kissing the top of her head, Jack shook his own in response. "Wasn't planning on it. Unless you have some place you'd rather be." He lifted an eyebrow as if to say 'but I know that's not the case so don't even try lying'. Closing his eyes briefly, Jack leaned into that light touch with a sigh. It felt so damned fantastic to have Rose here and he couldn't get over how much he had truly missed her over the years. Now that she was back, Jack wondered how he ever got on without her. "I won't," Jack promised, turning his head to kiss the palm of her hand. "Now, do yourself a favour, close your eyes and sleep. That's an order from your Captain, got it?"
