Who: Kirk and Bones
What: A reunion, possibly a medical check up, and Kirk talks his way into Bones' room
Where: City of Illusions
When: Day 13, late evening
Rating/Warning: TBD

When James T. Kirk was 13, he'd stolen his father's antique car and drove it off a cliff. He'd managed to jump from the driver's seat minutes before it went over the edge and, even after that, he'd just barely been able to pull himself up over the ledge. When the officer finally brought him home he received the beating of his young lifetime. Eight years after that he was in the middle of a bar fight when an older man by the name of Christopher Pike walked in and saved him before turning his life around and pointing him in the right direction. He'd met Bones and the two of them began a friendship which would grow to mean the world to him. A year after that Frank tracked him down and Kirk showed in the room he shared with Bones sporting a brand new black eye and a couple of bruises he didn't want to talk about. His best friend had managed to save him from himself back then. Two years later Kirk managed to find his direction once more and saved the Earth from certain destruction and now, not even a week after that, Kirk found himself in unfamiliar territory where a woman from the past had told him that his life was fictional. That it had all been for nothing (though she hadn't actually said that) because his life wasn't real. But... how could that be true? His feelings, his experiences had all been so damn real.

He'd managed to fake it in front of her. When the situation called for it he could hide his feelings as well as, if not better than, anyone else. He just once again threw on a cocky smile and his normal devil may care attitude. As soon as he'd received his journal and room assignment and had left Faith behind, however, it was a different story completely. For most of the day he'd remained curled up upon his bed wondering just how his older counterpart would handle this. Sure, he'd never met the man but the elder Spock had shown him bits and pieces of himself (accidentally, of course). He couldn't help but wonder what this older, stronger, wiser Kirk who had known his father and was loved by their mother, who hadn't had Frank in his life would do. He'd finally grown tired of his own damn moping a little later in the evening and left his room.

If he'd thought the outdoors would do anything to improve his mood he was sorely mistaken. It was cold and damp and it rained entirely too damn much. Some Goblin creature he found outside handed him some kind of gun and attempted to explain the rules while Kirk narrowed his eyes scrutinizingly at the weapon which, according to the Goblin, wasn't really a weapon. It seemed like a fun concept but... Kirk wasn't really in the mood to try and shoot at people he didn't know in an attempt to get that high score no matter how badly he imagined he really really wanted that high score. Instead, he settled for wandering through the light rain and getting himself nice and soaked before heading back to his building and his room. If Bones were around he'd probably have something to say about his condition and his damp clothing but Bones wasn't here. "I never thought I'd miss a grumpy old man so damn much."

The communicator had become a fun little noiseless toy. Kirk carried it around out of habit than an actual need for the damn thing. It was just some reminder of the home he had, fictional or not. He drew comfort from it, just as he drew comfort from the uniform shirt he'd been wearing for the past day and a half. If it weren't for the fact that most people tended to avoid the smelly kid he would've just resigned himself to wear the same damn shirt day in and day out. He'd decided he actually wanted friends though. Maybe he'd get lucky and they'd be able to tell him a little more about where they were or had ideas on how to get home... or could tell him a little more about Star Trek. Just because his life was a television show didn't mean he wanted to avoid talking about it completely. Besides... maybe the others who knew of it would have nice things to say about him. Yeah, he'd really enjoyed all the things Faith had said when she didn't know who he was. All that 'bad boy' stuff she went on about was quite interesting. Even seperated from his ship and the people who mattered the most to him Kirk's ego still seemed to just eat up everything and anything she had to say. It was a nice little pick-me up.

As he reached towards the door to let himself in there was a sudden burst of static from his communicator followed by a familiar voice. At first Kirk jumped and fumbled for his communicator, nearly dropping it as he brought it up to his lips. "Bones?" He asked, voice probably sounding small and just a little insecure. Was this place playing some kind of game with him? What if Bones wasn't there? What if he was getting some kind of transmission from the ship and Bones wasn't actually able to hear him? He cleared his throat hoping to sound a little more like himself. "Bones! Bones, is that really you? Can you hear me? Where are you?" He was sure the older man couldn't see him now. He was probably on the Enterprise with the others wondering where the hell their Captain had gone to and why he was so damn late. Pacing back and forth in front of the building, Kirk bit his lower lip as he tried to fiddle with the communicator to strengthen the signal just in case Bones really couldn't hear him.

He was still getting wet. It was pouring and his clothing was now sticking to his skin wetly. It was cold and his current state only made it feel colder. Fiddling with it didn't really seem to be doing much of anything. If he really planned on trying to boost the signal's strength he was going to have to take it apart but to do that he needed tools of some kind. He didn't have any of those tools here. Letting out a sigh he leaned against the building and turned his attention towards the sky above him. Maybe the Enterprise was up there somewhere right now. Maybe they were all stuck here.

If he was completely honest with himself, the doctor had expected the same response that he'd gotten when he tried hailing the Enterprise, absolutely nothing. But, only a couple of seconds after he'd called out to Kirk, his communicator crackled to life. His eyes widened as he heard the familiar tones of his best friends voice, and the surge of relief that went through him was absolutely undeniable. He had to take a second or two to close his eyes and lean against the side of the building, just trying to reconcile himself with this wonderful news. Kirk was out there, somewhere, Kirk could hear him, and he could hear the younger man, as well. If he found himself face to face with whoever invented communicators, he would pretty much be tempted to give them a huge hug right now. This was incredibly unusual for him on all sorts of levels.

Instead, he raised the device once more, speaking directly into it. "Jim! Damn it, where the hell are you?" Something about Kirk's voice touched him, made him think that he must be here somewhere. He'd very rarely heard Kirk sounding unsure, and it would take something pretty major to make him. He bit his lower lip, and then spoke again. "Are you on the Enterprise? I'm on some weird planet with giant board games one day, and fake guns the next." Which was about as close as he could come to understanding what was going on, or trying to explain it.

He stopped sending the signal, giving Kirk a chance to respond, and the waiting felt like ages. What if he'd only been able to hear the younger man that one time? What if Jareth was playing with him? From what he understood from Ned, that wouldn't be at all unlike him. What if he'd imagined his friends voice entirely? Belatedly, he realized that he should duck inside, get out of the rain, and keep his communicator dry. After all, if he were going to find Kirk, he might need it. It was a strange situation for a technophobe to find himself in, but right now, finding his best friend was much more important than pretty much anything else he could think of.

It was Bones and Bones could hear him and, apparently, was in the same situation as he was. "I'm... in front of a dorm building. Definitely not on the Enterprise." He was almost disappointed that this wasn't a call from somewhere high above him. He couldn't tell Bones to have him beamed up and wash his hands of this place. Well... he couldn't get back to his ship but at least Bones was here somewhere. Maybe they were even in the same place and Kirk just hadn't realized it yet because he was so focused on the damn communicator and maintaining a signal. He hadn't even thought about keeping it dry. Those damn things were designed to work under various conditions. A little rain shouldn't be a problem.

Heading back towards the relative dryness of the dorm building, Kirk paused to look at his surroundings. If Bones asked him where he was he'd have to be able to describe the place. Taking a step back to actually look at the building he nearly tripped, but dropped his communicator sending it skittering over the ground a few feet away. Making a face Kirk grabbed it and stopped as he saw what looked like a dark blue uniform heading his way. Soaked but definitely dark blue.

Pulling his communicator to him he pressed the button to once more call his friend. "Bones?" When he heard his voice on the other communicator crackle to life Kirk jumped up with a laugh and triumphant should before rushing forward and throwing his arms around the older man in a hug. Oh it hurt thanks to all those damn bruises but Bones was here and alive and well and most of all here and Kirk could touch him so he may have been fictional too but he was real enough for the young Captain. "Bones... I thought I was all alone here. I thought I'd never see you again."

When he heard the voice not only through the communicator, but also from somewhere in front of him, his eyes widened. This time, it was his communicator that fell to the wet ground, and really, he didn't give a damn. Ned had told him not to assume that Kirk was here, and Bones had done his best, but here he was. He hardly had time to really realize it before he was being pounced. And, for once, he didn't even hesitate before hugging the younger man back. Normally, he probably would have hugged him for a couple of seconds and then pushed him away, but this time, he showed no inclination to do that at all.

With his arms still around the younger man, he did eventually pull back just so that he could actually look at him. "Damn it, Jim, don't you dare pull this shit on me again. I thought that pointy-eared bastard..." What whatever he'd thought Spock had done didn't matter, as he was the one who actually initiated the hug this time. That was a new thing, and when he realized what he was doing, he did pull away.

"C'mon, you're going to catch your death of cold." Ignoring the fact that he had been wandering around in the rain all day at this point, and was basically the proverbial pot to the kettle. "My room is just inside this building." He stopped talking for a moment, really looked at the younger man, and laughed. "You look like hell, you know that?" Unable to really reconcile himself with not touching Kirk in some way, needing to know he was real, he slung an arm around the younger man's shoulders, meaning to lead him into the dorm building.

Kirk made a face as Bones mentioned Spock but ignored it in favor of just soaking in the attention and affection the older man was showering him with. It really was nice to have Bones initiate a hug for once in their long friendship. Unfortunately, it ended a little too soon and the warmth that had come from having the older man so close disappeared along with that contact. Wrapping his arms around himself Kirk offered Bones a shrug and a half smile. "Don't worry. I won't be getting myself transported onto weird planets or dimensions again anytime soon. Or at all... if I can help it. You never know what's going to happen in this crazy ass universe." And if five years. Who knew what their five year mission would entail. Maybe they would end up thrown into various other dimensions or times or planets or whatever else.

"You're one to talk." Kirk huffed but allowed the older man to lead him into the dorm building and out of the rain. He really was getting cold. "Hey... my room is in here too!" He said happily, pulling away from Bones and all but running the short distance to his room. He laid his hand upon the door and turned to offer Bones his best smile. "This is my room. Where's your's? Is it close?" Wouldn't that just be amazing and a little bit sad? For all he knew Bones was just in the room next door and they could've been together all this time. Kirk could've talked his way into the older man's room and spent the nights curled up against him and taking a sort of quiet comfort from having the doctor so damn close. It would've helped a lot after being told he was fictional.

"And I know I look like hell." He said, placing his hands upon his hips and jutting his lower lip out in a slight pout. "You try getting your ass kicked and strangled by an emotionally compromised half-vulcan and then two seperate Romulans and see how you feel... or look when you come out of it." Not really thinking Kirk moved up to Bones and pulled his collar down to show up the bruises of three seperate sets of fingerprints upon his throat. "See..? Oh and you should see the bruises on the rest of me. The one on my chest is huge! It hurts just to lay on it if the surface is flat and hard enough." He sounded almost proud of the bruises and cuts and scratches that covered his body and it showed in the way he pranced away from the older man to move back towards the rooms.

The doctor had to admit, there was a lot that Kirk was saying that didn't make any sense. The stuff about the half-vulcan, who could only be Spock, confused him completely. But, really, that was relatively minor. At least, next to the fact that he'd actually found his best friend. As annoyed as he acted by Kirk, he had sincerely panicked when he'd found himself here and not known that the other man was here yet. So the rambling, well, he could handle that, and figure it out later. "Good. This place is weird, but I don't want to think about what other weird places are out there." As far as he was concerned, if not on the Enterprise or just on earth, they were better off here.

When Kirk ran off, Bones watched him, aware that the look on his face was incredibly fond, but not really able to do anything about it. And, of course, his customary grumpy look was firmly back on his face. Although it faded away slightly as Kirk touched the door right beside his, and blinked at him, mouth slightly open in disbelief. When he could finally talk, the surprise in his voice was evident. "Do you mean you've been next door to me this whole damn time...?" He stood by his own door, only a few feet from Kirk's, and shook his head.

"Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Alright then." He would laugh, if it weren't so upsetting. But that, well, that just wasn't as important as Kirk running over to him, showing off his battle scars. A strange look came into his dark eyes, a look that meant he was about to go into doctor mode. Locking his fingers around Kirk's wrist, he pulled him into his room, not taking any protestations, or even acknowledging them. "Clothes off. Now." His tone was uncompromising. He needed to do an exam, and for that to most easily happen, Kirk needed to take his clothing off.

"But... Bones! Think of all the millions of planets we could be exploring now." He protests were weak at best and he knew it. Bones didn't actually enjoy space travel. The older man had managed to get over his phobia but he'd never really grown to love the idea of space. Not like Kirk... but Kirk had always assumed that space was in his blood. He was born in space. Born in the wake of tragedy too. When he breathed his first his father had breathed his last. He didn't like to think that tragedy was in his blood but... well, who really knew?

Sliding his fingertips over the door he allowed a small smile to creep across his lips. Bones may not have found this particularly amusing but he sure as hell did. He'd been wondering about his neighbors and just who the hell they all were. He'd wanted to start banging on doors and meeting people just so he wouldn't feel so damn alone. If he'd done that he would've found Bones and the night wouldn't have seemed so long or so damn empty. It didn't matter now, they were together again. They just sort of looked like they'd been drowned. Kirk was sure he looked like shit but Bones... well he still managed to come out of this looking attractive enough. Maybe Faith was right. Maybe he really did have a crush on his best friend. "I guess so. I knew I should've gone out banging on doors looking for company last night. I could've found you then."

Now that he'd shown off his little trophies from his fights with three different aliens he realized just how stupid it was. He'd been able to keep them from Bones but, in his excitement, had completely forgotten to do just that. Seeing that familiar look come into the older man's eyes Kirk panicked and quickly turned back to his door, fumbling for his key. "No! No no no no no no no! Come on you stupid key! Where are you?" If he could get in and away from Bones he might be able to wait out that doctor instinct. Unfortunately, the key didn't want to be found and Kirk found himself being hauled into Bones' room. He whined and pouted and protested as much as he could but the older man either didn't hear him or didn't care. "No Bones! Come on... I just got this shirt!" He whined, wrapping his arms around the gold shirt which still clung wetly to his skin.

Normally removing his clothing for anyone who demanded it was no big deal. It was something he did without a second thought and with much gusto. Undressing for Bones normally made his heart race. Undressing for doctors put him in a full on panic. He had a terrible history with doctors and hyposprays in general. He was allergic to a ridiculous number of things and the doctors he'd had growing up had never really paid attention to his reactions because they'd never expected one. The resulting pain and everything else that came with it had only served to put a sense of fear into Kirk where doctors were concerned. Bones was the only one he could really stand and even then he raised hell to get out of physicals and everything else. With a defeated sigh, he dropped his arms and slowly pulled his clothing off revealing pale skin marred with various bruises. Just as he'd said the one of his chest was pretty big but the damn floors of the Narada were hard and near impossible to jump to.

"I was thinking of that." His tone was gruff, which was really fairly normal for him. He'd gone over this ground before with Kirk, of course. Space wasn't something he loved, though he had to admit, it had a harsh sort of beauty to it. But it was so dangerous, and he never would have dared to leave the solid ground of Earth if it hadn't been for the divorce. But she'd taken everything, left him with nearly nothing. He'd needed to get away. Of course, they'd been over that, too.

He had to smile slightly as Kirk spoke, of course. "Why can I picture you doing just that?" It was far too easy, evoking the mental image of the young man rushing recklessly through the hallway, knocking on random doors. He might have had a heart attack, though, if he'd opened the door and seen the younger man standing there. He'd been surprised enough to see him even after hearing his voice through the communicator. Still, he somehow thought he wouldn't have minded, since he would have gotten to see Kirk earlier.

Still, none of that mattered. He had to take care of the younger man now that he was here, that much was certain. With a sort of skeptical look at his best friend, he gestured toward the bed, which would have to do instead of an examination table, which he didn't have. As always, he tried to ignore the way he felt when he saw Kirk unclothed. Really, it was stupid. He'd roomed with the man for years, it should have stopped being an issue ages ago, but it had never really stopped being far too fascinating.

As for the rest of the things he said, well, he understood them less than than he had before, but that wasn't important just at the moment. Why Kirk would be wearing what he was wasn't as important as getting the young man healthy. So, going to the black bag that thankfully had come along with him, he pulled out various things, including, of course, several hyposprays, and then started scanning the younger man from head to toe. "Stop being such an infant, Jim. It's just a little medical examination." The bruising looked quite severe, and Bones didn't even bother stopping himself from shaking his head disapprovingly.

"Was it... hold still, damn it... the green-blooded hobgoblin who did this to you?" Or, more likely, the guards that had been called on him. Of course, it could also have been something after Kirk had left the Enterprise, but that didn't occur to him. His dislike of Spock made him a little prejudiced, in this case.

Laying down upon the bed Kirk decided to try one last time before fully giving up and attempting to squirm away from the hyposprays he knew Bones had. Reaching out he grabbed ahold of the older man's hand and tried his best to look his most pathetic which, given his current state, wasn't as hard as he'd expected it to be. "Bones..." he whined, "Please..." Bringing the hand to his face he nuzzled gently against the older man's palm in an attempt to bring his best friend out of doctor mode. He hoped he could override that instinct with a little affection. Unfortunately, it was a losing battle. Kirk could see it in Bones' eyes. There was no way the older man was letting him out of this for any amount of affection or whining.

Releasing his hand with a huff, Kirk turned his head to look at the wall on the other side of the room. Pouting wouldn't get him out of this, and he knew it, but that didn't mean he was just going to lie there and take it. "I hate medical exams. You know that." And even from where he laid with his head firmly not facing Bones he could still see the older man shaking his head in disapproval at the marks which marred his skin. He knew how the bruises looked, he'd had to see them as soon as they all got back home and he pealed his clothing off to wash up and pass out for a couple of hours.

He began to fidget just a little when he felt Bones draw too close. There was no way in hell the older man was coming at him with a hypospray in this world. "If you plan on using those on me I hope their from a special Jim Kirk bag full of the medicines you know I'm not allergic to." Finally turning back to the older man he reached out once more and took ahold of his hand. He hated doctors but he loved this one. "No, this isn't from Spock. I actually got this one jumping from a platform to another platform which was too far away. I caught it so I didn't fall to my death but, you know, mostly my chest caught it. I'm surprised I didn't break anything. Spock did this..." He lifted Bones' hand towards his face and the bruise there. "And this." He guided the hand down to his throat in the exact spot where he could remember the hal-Vulcan's hand being. "The other marks were caused by Romulans."

Kirk considered himself lucky. He'd come out of a battle with two different Romulans with only bruises to show for it. Nothing was broken or bleeded and he was alive. Letting out a shakey sigh he looked up into Bones' eyes and offered him a soft smile. "I look like hell, don't I?" Being around his friend had made Kirk forget about something Faith had said but now that he was on the bed staring up into Bones' eyes it came back to him. Fictional. They weren't real but... his allergic reactions to almost everything seemed real enough. Bones' concern for him seemed real enough. The way he felt about this man seemed real enough. So... maybe that was all that mattered? Maybe it was enough that his feelings for Bones and Bones, himself, were real to Kirk.

It would have been a lie to say that Bones wasn't affected by the tactics Kirk was using. Of course he was, just like he always was when his young friend did this. But he was also a doctor, and Kirk obviously needed medical attention. Normally, it probably would have worked. But this time, he set himself against it, and just continued what he was doing, running the scanner over the younger man's body. He even managed a smirk and a little shrug as he worked. "You should know better than that by now, Jim. Now hold the hell still."

Grabbing a hypospray, he shoved it against Kirk's neck and triggered it. "What sort of idiot do you think I am? I know every damn thing you're allergic to. Now, don't start whining, it's just a damn pain killer I gave you." From the look of those bruises, his best friend could use it. "If you'd just hold still, it would be over faster, you know." He pointed out, and then peered at the bruising around his throat, which seemed to be some of the worst. And, yes, his breath caught a little in his throat as Kirk took his hand and pressed it various places.

"Next time I see him, remind me to do something painful to him." He muttered, trying to hide with gruffness the way Kirk was making him feel. His fingers probed at the bruising with deceptive gentleness, and when he found himself starting to almost more caress the younger man than actually medically examine him, he let Kirk's hand go and stepped back. Damn it, there were not feelings he should be having for his best friend.

He sat on the edge of the bed and smiled slightly at the younger man. "Yeah, you look like hell." He confirmed. "But it's nothing that a few days rest won't cure. If it hurts too much, let me know and I'll give you more of the pain killer. Also, if you have the slightest allergic reaction, tell me, got it?" He eyed his best friend sternly, and then lowered his gaze. "You can get dressed again, if you want." Bones, himself, was of a mixed opinion like that. He had to admit, he liked having Kirk prancing around without his clothing, but it also made things difficult.

"Not every damn thing. We're in a new environment. I'm sure there are plenty of new bugs and animals and plants and whatever for me to become newly allergic to." There was a soft laugh in his voice but Kirk knew, better than anyone else, that it wasn't really a laughing matter. Numb tongue and swollen hands were only the tip of the ice berg. Those symptoms were comical and almost pleasant in comparison to the ones that resulted in rashes or severe stomach cramps coupled with nausea or the ones where his throat began to close up and he couldn't breathe. It really was a good thing that Bones had been brought into this weird world with him. Without the doctor to worry and care for him Kirk wasn't so sure he'd survive this place.

"Don't hurt Spock. We made up. Sort of. I mean, you know, I doubt he's going to put me on his Christmas card list but he's not going to try and kill me again." Knowing Bones was on his side sort of made up for the sting that had come shortly after taking command from Spock. None of that really mattered too much now. In the end he'd still seen Bones' name on his ship's manifest. The older man had accepted the position aboard the Enterprise as his CMO which meant that somewhere deep down in him Bones had faith in Kirk and his abilities as Captain despite his initial response to finding out Kirk would be in charge.

Sometime while Kirk was caught up in his own little world Bones had slipped out of doctor mode. His touches had become caresses and the pure gentleness in them had managed to bring Kirk's attention back to the older man who, unfortunately, had all ready dropped his hand and took a step back from him and the bed. Pushing himself up he smiled as the older man told him he could get dressed if he wanted. "So... you're saying that if I wanted to I could stay in your bed with absolutely no clothes on and you'd be completely all right with it, right?" His smile widened as he leaned closer to the older man. This was nice. The bed was comfortable and he had Bones.

Reaching out he placed a hand on Bones' shoulder. "Aren't you cold?" He asked as the wetness of the older man's shirt seemed to remind him that they had both been caught out in the rain. Biting his lower lip he moved closer and set his chin upon the older man's shoulder. "You know... I could warm you up." He teased before pulling back with a soft chuckle. "In all seriousness though, Bones, you should probably put on dry clothes before you get sick. I'm not sleeping in the same bed as a sick man."

It probably wasn't a good thing to say to a doctor, especially one as devoted to his work as Bones was. His large, dark eyes narrowed slightly. "Hadn't thought of that. I'm going to have to be doing these checkups pretty often, then, to make sure you don't have a bad reaction to something here." He, of course, knew how bad allergies could get. Otherwise healthy people could get stung by a tiny little bee, and end up dead from the allergic reaction. From the serious look he gave Kirk, he clearly didn't think this was any sort of laughing matter. But at least he refrained from lecturing him, because, from the look in Kirk's blue eyes, he knew just how much danger he was in.

"I'll take that under advisement." He grumbled in a way that made it pretty clear that he hadn't forgiven the half vulcan for the crap he'd pulled. Somehow, he doubted that he and Spock would ever really get along. After all, they hadn't exactly had the best interactions so far. But then, Spock wasn't here, so maybe it was fine.

Kirk's flirting had his breath catching in his throat, so of course, he rolled his eyes and acted just as gruff as always. Probably moreso, actually. He wasn't sure what would happen if Kirk ever found out what affect he had on him, but he figured there would probably be teasing, and he wasn't entirely sure he could deal with that. "Up to you on the clothing. You should probably find something else until those dry." He indicated the younger man's discarded clothing, and tried to avoid staring at his best friend.

"Yeah, I should probably find clothes that aren't wet." He raised an eyebrow at Kirk. "Oh, really now. Someday I'm gonna give you a heart attack and take you up on that." Standing up, he wandered over to the closet and opened it. "Hey, Jim... look." There were clothes hanging there, clothes that Bones knew he hadn't brought with him. But that was forgotten when Kirk spoke, and once more, his eyebrow arched. "You're sleeping in my bed now?"

"I'll be fine! Don't worry and stop looking at me so seriously. I hate that look." He made a noise as he threw an arm over his eyes in order to avoid seeing the look his best friend had fixed him with. "Look, I'm going to be fine. Nothing's going to happen. I'm not going to go into cardiac arrest or anaphylactic shock. I'm going to be okay." He moved his arm from in front of his face and sighed. Who else but Bones would get this worried over events that hadn't happened yet and possibly wouldn't happen? Who else would worry this much over him. Things like this normally lead to him reaching out in an attempt to calm the doctor through touch but Bones but he decided to keep his hands to himself for now.

He decided, instead, to stay silent and watch as his best friend continued to gripe about Spock. Who Kirk had completely forgiven. There wasn't even a trace of hard feelings towards Spock over it. Maybe he was a little too forgiving, too trusting but he had an entire lifetime full of people walking out on him. He didn't really want to drive away any chances he had at making lasting friendships. He and Spock were destined to be friends. Maybe they'd never be as close as the elderly Spock had been with his Kirk but it was all right.

"So either I stay here naked or I walk back to my room naked because I'm not putting those damn things on again." Taking off wet clothes was bad enough but putting them back on was a completely different kind of hell. He hated the way they stuck to his skin and instantly brought a chill with them. Given the choice he'd remain nude. "Yeah, I don't think I want that. I'm not sure I'm ready for the whole building to see what I have going on down here so I'll just stay here naked until my clothing dries, thanks. I'll cover myself up with something if you want though." The older man handled all of his check ups and they'd roomed together it wasn't like this was anything he hadn't seen before, especially on the occasion when Kirk decided he was sleeping nude.

"You never know. I may want you to take me up on that." He said offering the older man a suggestive eyebrow wiggle that would probably go unnoticed while Bones was walking towards the closet and opening it to reveal... clothing. "You... how the hell? It all looks like stuff you'd wear too." At this point he probably would've jumped up and ran to his own room to check that out but... he hadn't forgotten that he was without clothing and pressed himself a little more firmly back against it in order to put an end to that urge. "Of course I'm sleeping here. I'm not sleeping all by my lonesome in my room. It's too quiet."

Bones set his jaw in that stubborn way that pretty much meant he wasn't letting go of this. Of course, how could he ever forgive himself if the younger man got himself into trouble and he wasn't there to help him? Plus it just wasn't in him not to be a doctor. So he just gave Jim a look that stated that, while he might not be arguing anymore, this certainly wasn't over. His best friend wasn't dying at the moment, and that was the important thing. He would save the fighting about medical checkups for when he needed to.

"Then you stay here." He looked deliberately away from his best friend, but he refused to act stupid about this and insist Kirk put clothes on. He'd seen it all before, after all, and it was his problem, not the younger man's. So he took a deep breath and, still facing away from his best friend, pulled his wet, wrinkled uniform shirt over his head. Hanging it to dry on the back of a chair, he started poking through his closet for dry clothes. Deciding on a similiar uniform to what he'd just been wearing, he pulled the new, dry shirt over his head.

Quickly swapping his pants for dry ones as well, he turned around, running his fingers through his hair. Luckily, it was short, and would dry quickly. It was pretty hard to mess it up, actually. Dressed, feeling more comfortable, he went back to the bed and arched an eyebrow at his best friend.

"Aren't you cold?" He tilted his head to the side, wondering if he should get him a towel or something. But he'd rather just be near him. And there were blankets, he could always wrap them around Kirk if he needed to. "Okay. You're sleeping here." He agreed, not that there was any real choice. He was very, very bad at saying no to his young best friend about anything.

There was something about the way Bones absolutely refused to look at him while he was nude that didn't exactly sit right with Kirk. He probably should've expected it, been prepared for it. Bones had been married once, after all, he had a daughter. Most normal, perfectly heterosexual guys didn't want to sit around and stare at a guy's business all day long. It was just one of those things about the gender. Women might not care. Sex was normally far from their minds so there was nothing wrong with appreciating another woman's beauty. Men were a completely different story. They seemed to fear a great number of things about their own or another male's body and reacted rather violently to anything out of the ordinary. With that in mind, and the fact that Kirk knew he was making Bones uncomfortable and didn't actually want to, the younger man grabbed a spare blanket and through it over his waist. It covered only what needed to be covered and nothing more.

With this sudden act of consideration he decided to look away while Bones changed his own clothing, offering the older man as much privacy as he could while he was in the same room. Back at the Academy he may have watched and secretly appreciated all there was to Bones' build. Here it was different. Here Bones was all he had and there was no way he was going to risk running him off no matter how strongly Kirk may have felt towards him. He didn't look back up until Bones had returned to the bed fully dressed. His hair was still wet. It still clung to his scalp... though now it was messy where his fingers hand been run through it. It was cute and Kirk couldn't help but reach out and smooth the unruly dark locks.

"No, not really. I mean I covered up a little. The cold doesn't really bother me." Which meant he was saying he was cold even after he'd just said he wasn't. There were times when he just couldn't keep his story straight. Bones seemed to have this affect on him. Whenever the older man was too close Kirk simply forgot what he was saying. "And don't arch your eyebrow at me! I swear, you and Spock and your damn judgemental eyebrows. When we get back home I'm going to get a yeoman to be your personal eyebrow wrangler. She'll be in charge of poking at your forehead until your eyebrow goes back to some neutral zone and out of your hairline. Spock will get one too." Uhura might try to kill the other girl though.

The doctor felt a bit calmer once he'd dressed, a bit more in control. Of course, that pretty much immediately went out the window when he came back and looked at him. Somehow, the blanket made things... well, not worse, exactly, but certainly not much better. Covering up a little could make things way more tantalizing. Still, he managed not to stare. Barely. He'd always found the young man attractive, but had no way of knowing if his flirting was serious. Kirk was just a flirtatious person, after all. He didn't want to assume it meant anything that it didn't.

Still, he couldn't help but press a little into Kirk's fingers as they ran through his hair. Without really thinking, he reached out and touched the younger man's face, but only for a second. He quickly remembered what was going on, where they were, and how inappropriate that probably was. Had it been this difficult back home? He could remember times when there had been some tension on his side, at least, usually when they'd been drinking. But it seemed more difficult here, maybe because Kirk was all he had of his home, which tended to make him cling more tightly to him. That was his best theory.

"Yeah, I'm sure that's the best way for Starfleet resources to be used." With an exagerated sigh, the doctor laid down on the bed and pulled the young captain into his arms, blanket and all. With his foot, he managed to hook one of the other blankets, and he pulled it over them both. "You're a horrible liar mostly, Jim." With a slight smile, he held the other man close. It was perfect, really. If Kirk got mad at him, he could always say it was just to get him warm.

"I, personally, think eyebrow wrangler is a great use of Starfleet resources. I'm more than prepared to write a personal letter to the Federation requesting one for you." He smiled. If the admirals were smart (or had ever been on the opposite end of those 'judgemental eyebrows') they'd have to agree with him. Moving his hand from the older man's hair he poked gently at his eyebrow. "Hm... on second thought maybe I'll do it myself. I don't like the idea of some floosy in a short skirt poking at you. If you really feel like it's needed I guess I can always wear a short skirt... a wig too maybe. I've all ready got the floozy part down." He wouldn't really wear a skirt.

Letting out a soft noise of surprise he allowed Bones to pull him close. It was... oddly perfect. Letting out a content sigh he nuzzled gently against Bones' neck and closed his eyes. "I'm not a horrible liar. You just know me too well. We've been rooming together for three years, I've been bugging you since that stupid shuttle ride when all you did was bitch and moan and 'I may throw up on you' isn't the polite way to introduce yourself, you know? I'm an ill mannered brat but even I know that. It's a lousy pick up line too, you know." He just felt Bones needed that information in case he ever tried to use it. Not that he should... or that Jim would let him use it on someone else. "We need to work that into our wedding vows though." He teased.

Wrapping his arms around Bones, Kirk cracked an eye open and stared up at the older man. "You're all I have left of home now. Granted I kind of hated home to begin with but you're all I have left now. I guess I don't really mind that. I'd rather it be you than anyone else. At least with you here I feel... and I know I'm safe."

"If we ever get home, I'll worry about that." He shook his head slightly, but couldn't help but smile a tiny bit. It was impossible not to, with his young best friend being as absolutely adorable as he was. "Yeah, I guess you'd better do it yourself, then." He patiently endured the finger poking at his eyebrow. "But I'd better see a wig and dress on every time you do it." Not that he actually thought Kirk would, but the mental image amused him.

His hands rested against the younger man's shoulders as they lay together, and he knew that, really, this was a really bad idea. But he stayed right where he was, and even let his fingers slowly, but firmly, start massaging the young man's shoulders. "Yeah, well. I guess I've never been one for polite conversation." He paused. "Anyway, at least I didn't throw up on you. Be grateful for that much, at least." He blinked at the pick up line comment, and then coughed softly in surprise at the wedding vows comment. But Kirk, well, he joked around a lot. He figured it was just more of that. "Right. As soon as you agree to marry me, we'll figure out how to get that into our vows."

He took a deep breath, hoping that the young man would take that as a joke, and then moved on. "I know. I feel the same way." Which was about as close to a confessional comment as he ever came. "We should sleep. It's been a long day, at least for me."

"Just because you don't believe me gives me all the more reason to wear one of those skirts and possibly a wig." He huffed with a very Bones-like roll of his eyes. He hadn't actually planned on wearing a skirt or wig at all but with Bones being doubtful of his commitment to this position it seemed he had to take drastic measures. That was fine. He could deal with it. He'd wear a short red dress and high boots with a wig and he'd poke at Bones' eyebrows.

Closing his eyes, Kirk let out a soft content noise as Bones massaged his shoulders. He noticed the cough and simply smiled in response. He knew that one would get Bones. Popping an eye open he stared up at his friend, a soft smile on his lips. "Yeah? Well I'll start agreeing to it as soon as you propose. I can't very well walk up to you and simply say 'yes'. You won't know what the hell I'm talking about. Can't answer a question that has never been asked." Even if that did sound like the sort of thing he'd do. If he really thought about it he probably could simply walk up to Bones and say yes before informing the older man that he'd just agreed to marry him. Who cared whether Bones had asked or not? "James Tiberius McCoy. Captain McCoy. Jim McCoy. Captain Kirk-McCoy. Whatever I like the sound of it."

Letting out a soft sigh he nuzzled into the older man's neck and settled in. He wasn't moving for the rest of the night. This was exactly where he was going to sleep no matter how close they were or how uncomfortable it may have been for Bones. "Can I just move in here with you? I don't like being on my own." He'd do it if he were angry though.

The doctor shrugged, that same smile on his lips. "Uh huh. I'll believe it when I see it." Though, now that he thought about it, that was probably the worst thing he could say to his best friend. If anything could make him actually do it, it would be him pretty much daring him to. Pulling away slightly, he looked at his best friend and shrugged. Okay, so it would be a little weird to see him dressed as a girl, but if anyone could pull it off, it would be Kirk.

Well, this was getting to be a bit of a strange conversation, but, well, it was nice to simply be near Kirk again. He'd been so sure that he was alone among people he didn't know, and it was beyond being a relief to find the one person that he would have chosen to have with him, if he'd had a choice. So he went with it, at least somewhat. "Uh huh. And then you'd fall over dead when I actually did ask you to marry me." He touched the younger man's face gently, then let that hand drape easily over the younger man's hip.

He pulled the younger man closer against him, but didn't speak for a moment. His reaction to the request was interesting. He had to sort it out, try to see if Kirk was serious. Finally, he just shrugged. "Fine with me. Might as well, since I need to keep an eye on you anyway."

Oh so it was a challenge. All right, if Bones wanted it that way he got it. "Oh Bones, why must you doubt me so?" He probably should've went on to inform him that the challenge had been accepted and he'd show up in the medlab wearing a yeoman's skirt, boots, and a wig when McCoy least expected it and embarass him in front of Nurse Chapel but... there was no reason to be that nice. Bones would find out soon enough. If they didn't make it back home anytime soon he was pretty damn sure he could find a way to pull it off while they were here.

Moving just a bit as Bones' hand came to rest upon his hip Kirk simply sighed and shook his head. "You'll never know until you ask. And... if I do drop dead it's a good thing you're here, right? You can save me with your awesomely amazing doctor hands." He may have thrown that in there because he was incredibly aware of just where Bones' hand was upon his hip. He didn't mind it really. He liked that feeling. It was just hard not to notice it. "Anyway..." He murmured deciding to change the subject before he got some strange childish idea like 'if neither of us are in a serious relationship or married off to some alien priestess in five years...' It was just best not to dwell on any of that.

Unfortunately nothing more came after his grand attempt at redirection and he fell into silence... for a whole three minutes. "Just say yes. We both know you're going to. You may not want to or like to admit it but you know you want me here." Bones couldn't resist him. He hadn't been able to say no to Kirk yet. The doctor was wrapped around the young Captain's finger and he kind of knew that. It didn't mean he took advantage of it or used Bones in any way. He just knew that he could get away with almost anything (as long as Bones wasn't in that horrible doctor mode) with little more than a frown or a pout of his lips.

He didn't have to do either this time as Bones gave in without much objection. "Yay!" He cheered sleepily, hand moving from it's newfound home on Bones' chest in a half hearted cheer. "You can start keeping an eye on me and all my horrible conditions tomorrow. For now... sleep." He tilted his head up and very quickly, very briefly pressed his lips to the older man's chin before falling silent.
