Day Twelve
WHO: Giselle and Legolas
WHAT: Whiny!elf is whiny. Also angsty!
WHEN: Day Twelve, morning
WHERE: Their house in the Goblin City
WARNINGS: It's Giselle and Legolas. PG. At absolute most.
STATUS: Complete

In many ways, Legolas was a simple creature. Things were one way, and he was happy with that. Things that made his life more complicated were not particularly welcome. To say Pandora had done so would be a definite understatement. He'd spent a lot of time in both Rivendell and Lothlorien, reading, and he'd certainly come across vampires. Creatures of pure evil, those who serve Morgoth, foul, tainted beings. Leeches who fed on the blood of the living to prolong their unnatural lives, they were an abomination, and must be destroyed.

Pandora hadn't seemed like that, somehow. Which made it worse, really. At times, she'd seemed almost sad. That shouldn't have been. Still, he'd been tainted by her touch, and he'd been unable to fight her off. For a warrior like he was, this was incredibly disturbing. He liked to think he could take care of himself, but in this case, he hadn't been able to. She'd overwhelmed him completely, and he'd been helpless against it.

So, for the last day, without a break, he'd been practicing his archery. If he ever saw her again, he would be ready. She wouldn't even get close to him. Every time he started to think he could leave his practice, he got a new surge of energy and purpose from the promise he'd made to himself. That would never happen to him again. He sent arrow after arrow into the bulls eye of the target, his face wearing a grim expression that was rarely seen. Usually, no matter the situation, he was smiling, but not now.

He didn't get tired, not in the same way a human would. But he hadn't allowed himself to fall into the dream like reverie that elves had instead of sleep, not since Pandora had bitten him. His arms were shaking, the muscles weary, but he gritted his teeth and forced them to be steady. The next arrow, though, for the first time in a long time, not only didn't hit the bulls eye, it didn't even hit the target at all. The string of curses he let out were both elven, and incredibly colorful.

It had been a little strange living in the same house with Legolas, but they had separate rooms and she didn't feel too improper. Besides, it gave her the opportunity to see him more often than living in separate dorms had before. They often ate together and explored their new surroundings together and Giselle was happy. But a few days ago Legolas had changed.

She couldn't figure out what had happened, or if she had done something wrong, but he'd been practicing his archery almost non stop and she was sure that there was something wrong. He also hadn't been joining her for meals and she knew he hadn't been eating, either.

She wouldn't be adamant but she was going to ask him to tell her what was wrong. She only hoped that it wasn't her. She gathered some fruit and bread and headed out to the archery field. She watched him from a distance for some time and when he missed his last target, which never happened, she approached.

She lifted a surprised brow at the curses that left him, but she wasn't completely shocked. It seemed he was taking on many traits she wouldn't have guessed he would ever display. "Legolas?"

As soon as the curses were out of his mouth, Legolas felt bad about them. It wasn't his style at all, not normally, and it bothered him on some level that he had been dragged down to that point. But the whole thing was just upsetting, and it was hard to hold on to the cheerful nature that usually saw him through everything. Still, that was no excuse. Part of him knew that.

As someone approached, though, he whirled around, bow held ready. It was a voice, a female voice. Even though it only took him a couple of seconds to realize that it was Giselle speaking, Giselle who was so different from Pandora that it wasn't even funny, for that few seconds he was panicked, backing away just a step or two. He was completely terrified, though it was obvious very quickly that it wasn't Pandora who had found him.

"Forgive me, Lady Giselle." He bowed his head and dropped his bow, making sure she knew that he wasn't going to attack her. The look in his eyes must have been quite wild. He hoped he hadn't scared her. The bow fell to the ground, and he kicked it aside. In truth, it felt good to stop his archery practice. It was only now that he realized how exhausted he was.

Carefully, he approached her, and then stopped a short distance away and bowed courteously to her. "Good evening... afternoon..." he glanced up at the sun, shook his head, and tried again. "Morning. What is it? Is there something I can assist you with?"

Giselle was startled to see the pointy end of an arrow aimed at her head. Her blue eyes widened even further than normal and she nearly dropped the basket of food she held in her hands. She stood stock still and waited for Legolas to recognize her. She saw the fright on his face, the terror and she took on a bewildered look. How could he be afraid of her?

He soon seemed to come back to himself, if not completely, and recognize her for the woman she was, not the woman of his nightmares. She was concerned and her bewilderment quickly morphed into sympathy. There was really something wrong with him. She'd never seen him act this way before. He dropped his bow and apologized to her and she made a crooning noise. "It's alright. I should have announced myself."

"It's morning, Legolas." She glanced up at the sky to be sure she was telling him correctly, and she was. "Have you been out here all night?" Her usually chipper demeanor was replaced with one of concern. "No, I don't need anything, I just wanted to bring you some food." She was sure now that he hadn't eaten in a while.

She stepped toward him, pausing to put the basket on the ground and reached out to touch her warm hand to his. "Legolas, is there something wrong? Please, tell me."

The relief that went through him at seeing her sweet face was nearly overwhelming, and he raised his fingers to his temples and rubbed them. His eyes stung from lack of rest, and his stomach was growling. Though he wasn't human, he still had physical needs, and his body was informing him of that very clearly. He needed to rest, but first, he needed to eat. And calm down. So, for the first time since he'd gotten it, he left the Bow of Galadriel in the dust and made his way closer to the redheaded girl.

"I thank you. Long has it been since last I ate." He picked up the basket of food, undid the clasp of his cloak, and let it fall to the ground like a blanket. Seating himself with slightly less than his normal grace, he gestured that she could join him, if she wished to. "I do not know if you have already eaten, but..." The sympathetic noise she made went straight to his heart, and he smiled at her for the first time since she'd interupted his practice.

When she touched his hand, he linked his fingers with hers and gently drew her down so that she was sitting, as well. It wasn't forceful, and she could resist, if she wanted to. He just thought it would be easier to speak if they were both on the same level, and he was very weary, suddenly. "You are very kind, and very sweet, as well as beautiful."

He didn't let go of her hand, and his fingers were shaking slightly, as with his free hand he took an apple. "I have been out since early yesterday morn. I..." Suddenly, he lost what little composure he had, and dropped both the apple and her hand, covering his face. "The vampire, that devil woman, she..." One hand dropped to his neck, covering the marks that weren't there, that Pandora had cleared away, but that he could still feel somehow.

Giselle was alarmed. She was sure now that there was something wrong with him. Her brows knitted together in her concern as she followed him toward the cloak he was using as a blanket though she remained standing for a moment. His smile, while genuine, was not happy. She had never seen the chipper elf so distraught before and her stomach clenched in fear. Even through the Labyrinth and the dangers they had faced there she had not seen him like this.

He reached for her hand and tugged her down. She obliged him and took her seat on the cloak. He kept hold of her hand and she did not take it back. He looked so tired and drained that she almost didn't hear his compliment to her. "Thank you, but..." And then she noticed that he was shaking slightly. He had been practicing for almost a whole day! "Legolas, that is too much. Even for one such as yourself. You will tired yourself out."

Suddenly her hand and the apple were dropped and he covered his face with is long delicate hands. "Vampire? Legolas?" Giselle was so confused. She hadn't met any vampires here. She had heard of the creatures, but did not know much about them, much less that there were some here. "What? What did she do?" She saw his hand drift to his neck and her blue eyes widened in horror. "She bit you?" She recoiled slightly and drew her hand to her chest.

"Oh, Legolas. How terrible." Now she understood why he had been so distant and disturbed. She leaned toward him and slipped her arm around his shoulders, drawing him close and hugging him, sliding her hands over his back and humming softly. She tried to comfort him the same way she comforted frightened animals. It made her sick to her stomach to think that he had undergone something so terrible.

When Hermione had turned the tree to stone, Legolas had been in anguish, but that was nothing to what had been done to him this time. And he simply wasn't used to things like this happening to him, so it had sent him reeling. He had no defenses, even less than most people would have, against the memories of Pandora's bite. He would recover, of course, he was far too resilent to do anything else. And there was no doubt about it, she was helping.

The elf nodded slightly. "I have come to realize that. I simply wished to be good enough that, should she come again, I may stand up to her and, this time, drive her away." As a warrior, the fact that he'd been able to even put up anything that could be considered a fight bothered him. "But I grow weary. I do not feel tiredness the same way that humans do, but there are limits even to my endurance."

Wordlessly, he nodded, his fingers still covering his face. He felt like she would probably run now that she knew he was tainted by the vampire's touch, and he wouldn't blame her. But she didn't run. Instead, she pulled him close and hugged him, and he lowered his hands from his face. "You are still here? I had thought that if the truth were known, you would shun me."

She was so tiny, and he, while slender, was very tall. Yet he managed to rest his head on her shoulder, his arms loosely around her, holding on to her slight form. Under her calming influence, his breathing evened out, became more natural, and even his shaking stopped eventually. "She went into my head, she read my thoughts, but I would not let her know about you. I promise you, my lady, I kept you safe."

She understood that his manhood and warrior's skill had been called into question during this horrid woman's attack. He had been unable to drive her away before, although she did not know all the details, and he was running himself ragged trying to be prepared for her should she come again. Giselle hoped that he would never have to experience the vampire's bite ever again. Especially if this is what it did to him.

She nodded, feeling sorry for him. It broke her heart to see him like this. He was usually so strong. She bit down on her lower lip. Tears brimmed in her eyes but did not fall. She laughed softly, a little shocked that he thought she would leave. "Yes, Legolas, I am here. I won't leave you now. It wasn't your fault that she attacked you, why should I shun you?" He could no more change the fact that the vampire had attacked him than he could change how tall he was and she couldn't find any reason to shun him for that.

She held him tenderly, as she would a child or an animal, crooning softly to him until his quaking ceased and his breathing calmed. He spoke again and Giselle was horrified to hear that the vampire had gone into his head. How was is possible that a creature could not only violate someone's body but also their mind? Giselle could not fathom such a creature and it only made her sympathy for Legolas grow.

She smiled and drew back though her hands rested on his shoulders. "You are my hero, Legolas, even under attack you thought to keep me safe." She gazed at him, blue eyes sparkling. She touched his face gently with one hand before she went back to her place on the cloak. "I am nothing compared to you or many other princes, but if I were capable, I would gladly harm this vampire woman for you."

Under the influence of her understanding and her gentle arms, he slowly calmed down. There was, after all, still goodness in the world. The woman holding him so sympathetically was good, and pure, and proved that such things still existed. He found himself clinging to that almost desperately, and knew that it was this knowledge that could bring him out of the dark places where he'd been spending the time since Pandora had attacked him.

This was the first glimmer of hope he'd had that life would go on, that it would all be okay in the end. When she said she wouldn't leave him, he smiled at her. It wasn't the normal bright, cheerful grin, but it was a genuinely happy expression, and he took her hand as she rested it on his cheek. For a moment, he looked into her eyes, and found himself a little alarmed by some of the things he was feeling.

When she moved away, he wasn't sure if he was relieved or disappointed. But he kept his hand in hers, not exactly clinging to her, but definitely glad that she was as good as ever, and somewhat of a stablizing influence on the elf. His free hand found the apple he'd dropped, and for the first time, he felt actually hungry. He took a bite, quickly finished the fruit, and reached for the bread.

"You are braver than you know, my lady." A slight smile was still on his lips as he gazed at her. "I watched as you went through trials in the Labyrinth that would have been difficult for anyone, and yet, you bore them all with great fortitude. I think you underestimate yourself." And he was really quite touched by her words, and the tone she'd spoken them in. He believed she meant it, and that soothed him greatly.

Giselle felt so sorry that Legolas had come under such a predicament. It was a terrible thing, she knew, and one she wished she would never have to experience herself. She only wished that she could take his pain upon herself and leave him as he once was. She sat close to him, stroking his shoulder and alternately his hair.

She was happy to see him smile again and she hoped that he would mend soon. It pained her to see him this way. She met his gaze with one of her own, her eyes deeply blue and wide, full of innocence. She bit down on her lip and tilted her head slightly, wondering at his thoughts. He seemed to flinch back though and when she moved back to her place he seemed to relax. She hoped she hadn't reminded him of the devil woman. She couldn't bear to resemble his nightmares.

She glanced down at their joined hands and smiled, at least he hadn't pulled back as if she had the plague. She reached inside the basket and drew out a container of raspberries. Settling them on the cloak they were using as a blanket she lifted one to her lips. They were juicy and sweet and they briefly took her mind off of Legolas' problem. She was glad to see the elf eating and with such voracity. She had done something right.

She laughed softly as he claimed her to be brave. She tossed her head lightly and made a murmuring noise of disagreement. "Bravery doesn't seem to have any redeeming qualities unless you have skills with a weapon to back it up." True, she had wielded a sword and killed a witch who had turned herself into a dragon, but she was convinced it had been a fluke. Something she'd done to save the man she loved. She knew she would do the same thing and was startled to find that she had strong feelings for Legolas. She glanced up at him, searching his face and nearly gasped with the realization. She loved him!

The elf's eyes lit up at the container of raspberries, and he quickly took a small handfull, popping the sweet berries into his mouth and chewing before going back to the bread. But his hand stayed on hers, and he didn't seem exactly inclined to let it go anytime soon. Every moment that passed seemed to heal him a bit more, but he still found he wanted the stablizing influence of her hand in his. Such a simple thing, but it comforted him greatly.

For a long while, he just ate in relative silence. He would need to rest soon, but here, there was just her, and comfort, and good food. It was a nice place to be. She was very lovely sitting there, and he took a purely esthetic pleasure in the little things about her. Enormous, gorgeous blue eyes, fiery hair, a sort of grace so rare among humans, she was just a delight. And so gentle and kind, obviously, with her, it wasn't merely looks that made her so charming. Of course, if it had been, he wouldn't be nearly as interested in... being friends with her. Yes.

His thoughts had nearly gone some disturbing places right there, and he had to wonder at himself. And the delight he took in looking at her, was that just because she was beautiful? Yes, of course she was, but so was a tree, and he would much rather look at her than even an entire forest... oh, his mind was going there again. It was an odd thing, how that kept happening.

Luckily, conversation would distract him. He smiled at her and nodded. "I say this to you, Lady Bright-Star, you are as brave, couragous, and valiant as any I have ever met." He tilted his head to the side slightly. "The skills with weapons may be learned, but bravery? That is another matter entirely. And you spoke before of a sword when that monster appeared at the ball. It is no use denying it." Yes, he was definitely heading back to normal, his tone was gently teasing. "You are no coward. I would rather have you by my side than a legion of warriors."

Giselle's heart was beating rapidly. She looked at the man in front of her and felt it come uncomfortably to a halt in her chest. It started up again after a second, but she felt as if she might faint in the meantime. When had this happened? How had it happened? She had been in love with Robert not more than a month or two ago. She was searching her memories for the time that she might transfered her love from Robert to Legolas and couldn't bring anything up. But she hadn't thought of Robert in quite some time. Her thoughts had been made up of Legolas for so long now.

She glanced down again at their joined hands and had to force herself to breathe normally. She was startled, but not unhappy about the realization. She was downright happy about it, but she was going to withold her thoughts and feelings until she was sure he felt the same way about her. She glanced back up at him, her large blue eyes fairly glittering with excitement.

He saved her by continuing their conversation on bravery and she laughed softly, giggling and ducking her head. "Thank you, Legolas. I would rather have you at my side than a legion of warriors, as well." She looked back up and grinned at him, popping another berry into her mouth. She picked up another and held it out to him. "Aren't they delicious? I picked them myself this morning." This city was considerably better than the other one they'd lived in before they got through the Labyrinth. It had all sorts of things the other didn't. Raspberry bushes included.

So obviously human, this one. Even if he hadn't been able to see the tips of her ears, which held no trace of the elven point, he would know. And that was really the problem, wasn't it? That she was human, and she would die. He'd always thought that elves that had found themselves in love with humans had to be incredibly brave to risk such a fate. But he was starting to wonder now if they'd entirely had a choice on the matter. The elf had never been in love, and had had some strange ideas about it, like choice and such.

The truth was, though he shied away from it, if she had been an elf, he would have been in immediate contact with her father to arrange a betrothal. If, of course, she was willing to accept such a proposal. But she wasn't, and her father, if she had one, wasn't even here. He tilted his head to the side and looked at her thoughtfully, speaking before he truly thought.

"Yes, the fruit is indeed delicious. What are they called?" He recognized them as a berry, but that was about it. "My lady, if I may inquire, I know very little about your family." He hadn't meant to ask the question, but he found himself wanting to know about her. "We are friends, are we not? And yet, I know little of you. I would like to."

"They're raspberries. You didn't have them in Middle Earth?" She found this very unfortunate for him and her brow creased in a light frown. She had enjoyed many forays into the forest to pick berries when she lived in Andalasia. She hadn't had the opportunity in New York. The plant life there was severely diminished by all the concrete and steel buildings. She had enjoyed the contrast at first, but she truly longed for the peace and tranquility that only nature could bring. She had found a bit of nature in Central Park, but even that had paved sidewalks and bridges.

Her frown increased slightly when he spoke of her family. She dipped her head, gazing at her free hand resting in her lap. After a moment she glanced up. Her frown was gone, replaced by an open reflection of sadness. "I know nothing about my family, Legolas. It is not strange that you know little about them, either." She paused, searching his face for a moment. "I was alone in the forest of Andalasia for as long as I can recall. My only family was the animals who chose to be my friends." It bothered her, not having a family or even the recollection of one. She was sure she had parents, but what had happened to them she didn't know.

"What about your family, Legolas?" Now that he had brought it up, she was curious. Surely he had a family that missed him. It was strange to think it, since she didn't, but the elf probably had people back home who were searching for him or grieving for his loss in their world. She batted long lashes at him. "What else would you like to know?"

"Raspberries?" He made a face, thinking that the name was a strange one for such a delicious fruit. Of course, on his world, it would have had some elegant elven name. But the humans always did choose the weirdest names for things. "Well, despite the name, they are good." He held a berry up, peering it at. "It does not look like something that would be called 'raspberry'." Yes, he was definitely getting back to normal. His whole tone and posture had changed from dejected, almost defeated, to one more like how he customarily was.

The look on her face made his heart break, though, when she spoke about her family. Setting down his food, now it was his turn to pull her into his arms. Seeing sadness on her face was strange, she was always so upbeat, so endlessly cheerful. It touched him that she would show him her sadness, and he couldn't stop himself from embracing her. "Perhaps you are as Melien, Lady Bright-Star." He spoke softly as he held her. "She was the fairest of the tree spirits, born at the beginning of the world, and she ensnared the elven king. He became smitten with her, and for ten years, they looked into each others eyes." He paused, realizing that she was, despite the fact that he had been speaking less than seriously, doing just that to him. Ensnaring him with her eyes, and she didn't even know.

Still holding her gently, he began to speak. "I am the only child of King Thranduil of Mirkwood. No brothers or sisters have I, and yet, all elves are kin, however distant. Distantly, I am connected to both Lothlorien and Rivendell, the Lady Galadriel, Lord Celeborn, Lord Elrond and his children. All of nature is my family, though, so you and I, we are not so different in that way. We both lived the years of our lives in the trees of the forest."

She laughed, her tinkling bell of a laugh and shook her head lightly. "No I don't suppose it does look much like something that should be called a raspberry. What would you have called it? I think I might have named it something simple like, sweet berry or pink berry." She shrugged with a half smile and put another berry in her mouth. He was glad he enjoyed them despite the name.

Although she was shocked at the suddenness of his arms around her, it was a pleasant surprise and one she welcomed. After a small squeak of a surprise, she melted against him. It felt nice to have his arms around her and she tucked her head under his chin. Listening to him recite the short tale of the elf who fell in love with a wood nymph took her mind of the loneliness of the Andalasian forest in which she'd grown up. "What a beautiful story, Legolas." She smiled up at him, her gaze raking over his handsome face.

She nodded as he spoke of his family. "What about your mother?" It pleased her very much to know that she and Legolas were alike in some ways. Sometimes she felt so very different, but the connection that the forest gave them was a connection she cherished very much. He seemed to be coming back to himself, and she was pleased to see little trace of the vampire's effects on him.

In all honesty, it made him a bit sad to speak of his family. As soon as he had realized that there was no going home, he'd largely given in to that fact, and stopped hoping. There had, after all, been new things to explore, new people to meet. For the first time since he'd been taken, he found himself remembering home, and not just the family he'd been born to, but also the friends he'd made that had become like his family. His smile was slightly wistful as he thought of them. But he shoved these thoughts away, to more pleasant things. "I know not. I shall have to think of a name, though, for berries so delicious."

Holding her felt incredibly good. She smelled like... sweetness and sunshine. It was hard to put a finger on it, but it was nice. His arms rested easily around her, his hands quite properly on her back, and he returned her smile as she looked up at him. "It is a story from the time when my people had only just been created and placed on Middle Earth." Though it had been thousands of years ago, he spoke more like it was only a few centuries, something in fairly recent history.

"My mother... is in Valinor. She went with the Lady Celebrian to that fair land, and there they wait for my father and the Lord Elrond to join them. On that day, I will be... would have been... king of Mirkwood." He frowned slightly. "I do not think I would be well suited to kingship. Perhaps it is just as well..." He sighed softly, and then gently released her. "Perhaps I should take rest now, my Lady. I am weary beyond anything I can remember."

Giselle didn't know why, but she felt like bursting into tears when he spoke of his mother. He didn't sound too terribly sad about it, and from what little she knew of Valinor, it was a nice place and not something to be feared. But she still felt sad that he didn't have his mother in his life anymore. But, he didn't have his father, now, either. Not here. "Do you think we will ever get back home, Legolas?" She was asking for his benefit, more than her own. She didn't really even want to go back to Andalasia, or New York. But she would have liked to have seen Mirkwood.

He released her and she felt a loss for a moment before she gathered herself and nodded. She got to her knees and began to repack the basket, moving off his cloak so he could pick it up. "I cannot imagine your weariness." She walked next to him as they made their way back to the house they shared.

When they reached it, and were inside, Giselle smiled at Legolas. "I hope you enjoy your rest. Let me know if there is anything I can do for you." She bowed her head slightly and then moved toward the kitchen where she put the things away before retiring to her own room for some quiet contemplation with some of her animal and goblin friends.
