Day One - In the Beginning
Who: Jareth and everyone!
When: Day One, early morning
What: The King addresses his court
Where: City of Illusions, town center
Rating: Anywhere from G to R, I suppose
Status: Complete

In the beginning, everything was nothing. There was a void, black and endless. In one split second, that changed. Where there had been nothing but blackness, the vaguest shape of something began to take form. At first, it was impossible to tell what, since there was still very dark. Slowly, an area of the void began to lighten, and something could be seen to move through the dim light. Before there was more than light and dark, he was there shaping the world.

The King of the Goblins and former Ruler of the Underground looked around at what he had done, little though it appeared to be. He laughed, and it was the first sound ever heard in that place. The light continued to build, and he liked that and encouraged it. For many seconds, almost a full minute, he was very busy. He could feel others coming from the strange Planet that he had escaped. He must be ready... buildings sprung into existance, and grass, and a forest around the edge of the town. He was very guided by the place he'd been before, but also by the first Underground that had been destroyed.

Things were still shiny and new, almost not quite formed, when the first of them arrived. He supposed he'd dragged them along with him when he'd done battle with the Planet, but he wasn't worried. They wouldn't know what was going on. In the blink of an eye, they were there. Cathal, Gabrielle, Faith Lehane, Mercy Thompson, Giselle, Severus Snape, they all popped into being. The surge of energy this brought was incredible, and the lines of the city he had created, which had been hazy and indistinct, firmed into a more solid state.

Jareth searched, then, through all of the worlds that he could reach into with all his millenia of practice. Before a full ten seconds had passed since the arrival of the first ones, those from Mirage, more were brought to stand beside them. Cimorene, Helena Campbell, Hermione Granger, Jack Harkness, Jack Sparrow, Robin of Locksley, Rose Tyler, Schuldig, Steerpike, The Doctor, Willow Rosenberg and Yaten Kou. There was no rhyme or reason to his selections. He simply grabbed those who interested him and took them.

Before long at all, in fact, before even five minutes had passed since he had first walked the void, he had a decent sized group. He would bring more, but later. For now, he had a doubtless very confused court to attend to, and it wouldn't do to keep them waiting. With a gesture, he stood in the very center of the group so they tended to form a circle around him. With a slight twist of his mind, he made himself appear to sparkle, to seem taller than he was, to get their attention.

"Welcome to the Underground." His voice rang out clear and strong through the clearing in the center of the town. "I am the King of this place, and I've brought you here. Some of you will be familiar with this process, as it has been done once before. For some, this is the first time. You will be glad to know it will also be the last." Through some trick of his illusions, he appeared to be looking at each and every one of them, though of course, that should not be possible as they were all arrayed in a circle around him.

"This is your home now. You will not be leaving." He snapped, and in front of each person hung floating in the air two things, a key with a number clearly inscribed on it, and a book. "This is what I shall give you. A journal, which I shall leave to you to figure out, and a key, which is to the room you have been assigned." As he spoke, an orange/red sort of light began to fill the sky to the east. Soon, the sun broke from the horizon and began to rise, casting light on what had largely been in shadow before.

The buildings, each and every one of them, were hung about in gauzy fabrics of all colors. Tents and pavilions were in abundance throughout the area, and from somewhere not so far off, a horse could be heard to snort to itself. It was the City of Illusions in it's Ren Faire guise, which Jareth had seen while on Earth and which had struck his fancy. "This is your home." He repeated. "I have made this city for you to live in. There are only a few simple rules. You may not attempt to kill each other. You may not leave. You may not attempt to go into another's room uninvited. It's quite simple, really."

Jareth didn't pause, didn't give anyone a chance to speak, or even really think through what he had been saying. "For those of you that would not be satisfied with simply existing here in this city, there is a choice. Brave my labyrinth." He gestured toward a wall, high and thick and imposing. A large gate, easily wide enough to drive two buses through, hung open. "If you solve the labyrinth and get to my castle at the center of the structure, you will be rewarded." He paused for just a moment. "Perhaps even with your freedom." He didn't specify further than that.

"That is all. If you have any questions, any of my servants will assist you." He snapped once more, and a short, funny looking goblin scuried up. "Of course, you are welcome to ask me in person... but only if you solve my labyrinth first." As the last words came from his mouth, he was already fading from sight. Seconds later, he was completely gone, leaving those he had brought in a strange sunrise in a completely new world. The goblin, however, remained, looking at the group impassively.

Giselle was happier than she had ever been since being snatched from New York into the land of Mirage. She was used to being taken from one realm to another and had acclimated to the foreign planet well. Especially since she'd had the opportunity to meet the genteel blond elf, Legolas. Just that morning, they'd serenaded the morning sun and sat while animals surrounded them to enjoy the music and the warmth. She was smitten. Not only was the man handsome and abundantly kind, he was a prince. An Elven Prince, of course, but she paid that no attention.

But, if she were being honest with herself, she would have to admit that she was a teensie bit annoyed at the moment. True, she was used to being thrust from one world to another, but she was getting tired of finding someone she might possibly love and then having them snatched away from her. As she glanced around the group that gathered while a sharp looking man spoke to them, she knew that Legolas hadn't been brought along. She stuck out her lower lip and crossed her arms over her chest, steadfastly refusing to do this again.

It would appear, however, as a key and journal floated toward her, that she had no choice in the matter. With a huff, she snatched the key and book from the air and then put on a smile. She would make the best of this the way she made the best of all her situations. Gathering her courage she looked around the motley group and flinched at the sight of a completely nude woman. It was not very warm, and she worried that she might catch cold. She would have spoken up, but Faith appeared to have enough people worrying over her.

She looked at the person beside her and flashed them a smile. "Well, this should be fun!"

"Fun?" Cimorene repeated to the princess next to her. It wasn't entirely hard to tell that she was royalty, just like herself, but already, Cimorene wasn't entirely sure she liked this brand of princess. The redhead reminded her far too much of her six simpering, giggly sisters for her taste. That smile and bright, cheery voice was enough of an indicator. "This is going to be anything but fun," she muttered, grasping her own book and key, sticking the first in her belt, and the second in the pocket of her skirt.

For all intents and purposes, she looked like a proper princess. Dressed head to toe in crimson velvet, with her best gold circlet capping her ankle-length dark hair, Cimorene had been on a rather sensitive errand for the King of Dragons at the time she'd been snatched, and so had opted to look her best for the occasion. The largest difference between herself and a standard princess, however, was that she had a sword belted at her waist. A sword who's hilt she had been grasping since the moment of her landing.

"Well, I'm hardly taking this lying down. I have work to do," she said resolutely, squaring her shoulders and looking at the crew that had been assembled, some looking confused, some looking patronizing. Deciding that odds were, they wouldn't be any help, Cimorene took a small piece of flat crystal from the pouch attached to her belt and set it down in the grass, crouching in front of it. A few muttered words, a curse, and another round of muttered words later, Cimorene stood up, crystal in hand, and glared at it, contemplating throwing it. "This is going to be more difficult than I'd thought."

Truth be told, Giselle wasn't actually a princess. At least, not yet. But she practically was one and that was why she acted the way she did. Every time she got close to even the idea of marrying a prince, she ended up in some other strange world. It was really rather annoying. And if she thought about it anymore, she'd likely cry. Wide blue eyes regarded the princess next to her, for Giselle could spot royalty from a mile away and knew what she was immediately, regardless of the sword at her belt.

"Oh, but look at all the new people there are to meet and it looks like such an interesting place." She looked around her at all the tents and the gauzy fabric. It reminded her somewhat of her home in Andalasia, but it was still very different. Giselle took a step back as the princess squared her shoulders and announced that she had work to do. Giselle wasn't about to stop her, but she wondered what sort of work could be done when one had only just arrived.

Tucking a stray lock of ginger hair behind her ear she watched the strange princess remove a crystal from her pouch and then crouch in front of it where she layed it on the grass. Perhaps this princess was a bit addled in the brain because the muttering, cursing and glaring certainly couldn't be construed as normal. Even in all the worlds Giselle had found herself in. With a confused expression on her face Giselle offered her hand to the girl. "I'm Giselle. I don't suppose you're alright by the looks of things. If there's anything I can do, just ask." She gave her another bright smile and looked hopeful.

"I'm not the best at making friends," Cimorene admitted, shaking her head and looking stalwart. She didn't like this one bit, but unlike other princesses of her land, she wasn't going to go all damsel in distress about it. She was going to get back to the Enchanted Forest, and she was going to do it without anyone's help.

"Princess Cimorene of the Kingdom of Linderwall, now princess of the King of Dragons, Kazul," she said automatically, rattling off her title like one would rattle off their favourite color or flower. "And I'm fine, thank you. Just looking for a way home, or a way, at least, a way to contact those there," she said, holding up the crystal. "But it seems to not be working."

"Oh." Giselle felt immediately sorry for the princess who had difficulty making friends. But she smiled at her nonetheless. Perhaps there was something wrong with her, but Giselle wasn't going to try to find out what it was. She liked everyone, and tried to see past their faults if she could. She glanced down at her dress, a pale periwinkle one with lace trim that she'd chosen to wear that afternoon before she'd been brought here. She hoped that if she were intended to stay here that her room would supply her clothing the way it had on Mirage. Of course, if it didn't, she could make her own.

"I'm Giselle of Andalasia. Nice to meet you, Princess Cimorene. Did you say dragon?" She went wide eyed again, unsure if she'd heard correctly. Giselle knew all about ogres, but she'd never actually met a dragon. Not a real one, anyway. Witches who could turn into dragons didn't really count in her book. She nodded when Cimorene spoke of trying to find a way home or contact those she'd left behind. "Yes, of course." Giselle didn't want to tell her that it was probably useless. No one on Mirage had ever been able to contact their loved ones back home, and fewer still had found a way to leave. It seemed that they left when the Planet tired of them, and not before.

"Well, good luck!" She chirped and then looked at the key and book she'd been given. She decided that finding her room would be a good idea. Then she could at least put this heavy book down.

"Of course I said dragon," Cimorene replied, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "Don't you have dragons where you come from?" she asked tilting her head to the side and wrinkling her brow. What a strange place this Andalasia must be if they didn't have dragons...

Cimorene nodded. "Thank you," she said with a slight smile, and then looked down at her own items. It was as good a time as any to figure out where she'd be staying until she found herself a way out of this mess, after all. "I wish you good fortune in all of your travels," she offered, and then walked off toward the buildings.
