WHO: Snape and Faith
WHAT: A day at the amusement park
WHEN: Day 7
WHERE: The rides
STATUS: Incomplete
RATING: PG-13?

Snape looked out his window, rolled his eyes at the sight of great, noisy, muggle machineries, and turned back to his workbench. The skele-gro potion he was busy concocting was at a crucial juncture. In a couple of minutes, the two-hour boiling would be done; Snape would have to add just the right amount of powdered lizard bone, then take the cauldron off the heat.

As he watched the potion burble away, he shook his head at the realization that his place was going to be changing its appearance every now and then, just like Mirage had. Why was he surprised? He only hoped more of the settings would be more like the last one and less like this new one. What in Merlin's name had even been going on out there? Over the flashing lights and various whirs and clanks, the dominant sound had been one of people screaming? Surely it was too festive an environment to be a torture zone? Whatever it was, Snape did not intend to find out. He had spent the last few days stocking his pantry well. That lizard bone had not been easy to procure.

As the allotted boiling time came to an end, Snape removed the cauldron from its hook over the fire, and reached for the jar of powdered bone. Only once he had poured the remaining powder into his measuring spoon did he realize that he had used the last of it. The wizard closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He had three other batches on the go. He was going to need more bone. Today. He was going to have to go out into that maelstrom of muggle nonsense. This was not turning into a good day.

Grabbing his black cloak, Snape strode angrily from his chambers.

It didn't seem fair somehow. It had been ages since she'd been to an amusement park, and the last time she'd been, she'd snuck in. Now, here she was, with no need to sneak in, and no one was around to go with. She'd wandered around a bit herself, but hadn't seen anyone that she knew. And, really, amusements parks weren't the sort of thing that were super fun alone.

She'd pretty much decided that the first person that she saw that she knew, even slightly, she would grab and drag out and about with her. But, again, she wasn't having much luck with that. Sure, she saw a few people she knew, but they were all in small groups, usually of two. The last thing she wanted to do was be a third wheel, so she kept wandering, looking around for anyone that she could rope into entertaining her.

She found herself by one of the dorms, and didn't really care which one it was. The important fact, to her, was that someone that she knew was walking out the door. That billowing black cloak was unmistakable. Grinning, her entire attitude picked up. Yes, it was bound to be a challenge to get the grumpy Potions Master to come on rides with her. She liked challenges.

"Hey! Sup, Skeletor?" She called out as she walked over to him, smirking slightly. "Kinda surprised to see you outta your room." Back on Mirage, Snape had spent most of his time in his lab in his room, as far as Faith could tell.

Snape stopped when Faith called him, and turned to face her. Despite learning the difficult way some months ago that she had absolutely no memory of their relationship as Watcher and Slayer (and even less interest in knowing him), the wizard still recalled vividly the time they had spent as intimates. Though he had been very comfortable in his room on Mirage, it had not compared, somehow, to the vivid intensity of spending time with this muggle woman. She could be frustrating at times--incredibly frustrating, to be honest--but there was definitely something compelling about her.

"Faith. Hello. How remarkable of you to show an interest. I am sorry, but I am afraid I cannot stop and talk at the moment. I am on an urgent errand. As for your bold statement about my habits, let me say only that you cannot have been paying very close attention. I have been out of my room much more frequently here."

With that, the black-clad potioneer paused, then turned on his heel to leave. Part of him very much wanted to stay and find out how far the Slayer was willing to take the conversation she had initiated, but he really did need that potion ingredient. The sooner it was safely in his room the better.

If she was being completely honest with herself (which she rarely did), she would admit that she was glad he had stopped at all. She hadn't exactly been the nicest person ever to him. Hey, so she got a little freaked out when people surprised her. When he'd been all 'Yeah, I was your Watcher and also we slept together', she'd been surprised. And she didn't always deal so well with being surprised. So the fact that he was willing to speak with her at all was not entirely expected.

"Dude, take a chill pill, okay?" She walked over to him and then smirked up at him. "Hey, how the hell are ya?" Without waiting for a response, she pushed on. "That's wicked. So, anyway, I need someone to hang with. So let's go!" Subtle? Not so much. But it was doubtful the dark-haired Slayer even knew the meaning of the word.

When he turned away, she wasn't even close to put off. Instead, she grabbed his arm and tugged him insistently towards the fair grounds. She was not losing the only person she'd found so far that she actually knew, not a chance. She felt like enjoying the rides, damn it, and nothing was going to get in her way. Not even the reluctance of her companion.

Snape had not been expecting Faith to grab his arm, but when she kept talking to him and pulled him back, towards the amusement park, he was not really surprised. The girl was willful and did not easily take 'no' for an answer. That was okay; Snape could be forceful. Shaking his sleeve free of her not-inconsiderable grip, he stood his ground and spoke firmly with her.

"Perhaps you did not hear what I said. I am on an urgent errand. If it helps persuade you, you should know that I am in the middle of mixing medical potions for the aleviating of pain and affliction. Surely, even someone like yourself would not wish to stand in the way of such good work."

Again turning to go, Snape inwardly shook his head. His potions were too important, and the muggle 'rides' looked atrocious, to be honest. His decision to insist on his departure was for the best. Part of him, though, thought spending time with Faith sounded like a good idea. It was the part that remembered how it had been with her, the part that wondered if this was his chance to show her how it could be. His back to her, ready to go, Snape didn't walk away.

"Did you really just apprehend me because you are desperate for company?"

Rolling her eyes as he pulled away, she wasn't even remotely put off. It would take more than a grumpy Snape to do that. Anyway, with a sort of unerring sense, she was able to tell that the man had a thing for her. She was, at this point, pretty good at knowing when she had that power over people, and was not even close to being above exploiting that. So she darted around in front of him, and stood blocking his way, arms crossed over her chest and a pout on her full lips.

"Hey, what's that supposed to mean? Someone like me? Shit, I care just as much about suffering and crap as the next person." Sort of, anyway. Or, at least, it sounded good to say so.

Her tone turned less demanding, more wheedling, and she walked slowly closer to him. "Come on, please? Your... whatever you're doing can wait, can't it? Just for an hour, maybe two? Come on, I'll be your best friend!" She knew very well she could be persuasive when she tried, and she was definitely trying now. She gazed up at him, then indicated the fair grounds with her head, smiling.

"So, whaddya say? Would hanging with me be so bad?" She deliberately didn't answer his question about why she'd spoken to him in the first place.

Snape looked squarely at the bouncing, begging young woman before him. She was certainly insistent, and to be honest, he didn't think 'hanging' with her would be so bad at all. He was not convinced that she was sincere in her desire to be his 'best friend', nor was he yet convinced that she had selected him for any other reason than that he had been walking by at the time the whim had struck her; nevertheless, she was paying him more positive attention than she had in a very long time, and in truth, he enjoyed it. Perhaps she was right. Perhaps he could spend an hour or two away from his potions.

"I say yes. My potions can wait an hour or two. I do not know whether 'hanging' with you will be bad or not, but I am willing to find out. You have my company. Lead on. Where do we begin?"

And that was that. He had placed himself, tentatively, in her hands. Needless to say, he would have no compunction about cancelling the excursion as soon as he suffered any significant abuse at her hands. Casual abuse he expected as a matter of course with her. He truly was a fool for love. Perhaps he would have to flog it out of himself later.

"Alright! Score!" Well, that had been a bit like pulling teeth, but hey, she had someone to hang out with now. It was worth it. And she was pleased, in a strange sort of way, that she'd been able to talk Snape into doing something he'd been opposed to in the first place. Of course, if he'd really, truly been opposed, he would have juste walked away. But it was more fun not to think about that, to think that she'd done it all herself.

She place an hand on his arm for a moment, indicating she was ready to go, and then turned toward the amusement park. "Alright, let's do this fucking place!" She turned to him, a slight smile on her lips.

"Hey, d'ya know, this is the first time I've been to one of these motherfuckers since I was, like, still in high school? Even then, we snuck in. What about you, Skeletor, you been to one of these places before?" She laughed, but not in a mean-spirited way. "Course you haven't, they're muggle, right?"

Snape widened his eyes and fought off the urge to roll them as Faith reveled in her ridiculous outburst. The touch of her hand on his arm got his attention as well, however. He found it a delicate gesture with sufficient class to gain his respect. He enjoyed the sight of her slight smile and attempted to return one of his own, his effort resulting in an awkward grimace.

"You do pay attention, don't you? I have never been to one of these muggle festivals before. Are they always so ... gaudy?"

As they walked among the rides and stands, Snape took in as much as he could without getting dizzy and sick. He had seen some spectacularly colourful effects from certain spells he had seen performed, but they had been momentary, a brief startling flash of light and colour and then gone. This mind-numbing display went on continuously however. He wondered how the muggles did it without spells or house-elves.

The dark-haired Slayer tilted her head to the side as she looked at him. Was he actually trying to smile? Either that or he was in pain, but he didn't seem to be. At least, he wasn't making any sounds that would indicate so. Damn, he really did have a thing for her, didn't he? Maybe he did know her from before, like he'd said. But that way of thinking couldn't go anywhere good, so she just shook her head without comment and headed off toward the noisy, light-filled amusement park.

"Shit, don't tell anyone. I got a rep, you know." She glanced at him, amused, as they walked past the concession stand. As she passed, she snagged a hot dog right off the counter, away from the person for whom it had been intended, and started munching on it as they went.

"Hey, let's do the roller coaster there, you up for it?" She grabbed his arm, tugged him lightly - well, for her, anyway - toward it. It was just the sort of thing she liked, with lots of twists, turns, and bits that went upside down.

"Don't I know you have a reputation. I find it difficult to believe, however, that you consider it something to be proud of.--Did you just steal that person's dinner?--"

Snape shook his head. Faith's behaviour was really quite atrocious sometimes. He refused to apologize for it, however, and said nothing more about the hot dog. Had coin been currency in that place, he would have magically lifted sufficient payment from the young woman's pocket without giving her a chance to protest; however, as it was, she had merely inconvenienced others, and only her apology would fix that.

"Great Merlin! Where does it begin?"

Snape watched the coaster for a short minute, trying to understand the purpose of all of its twists. His eyes widened when the train rushed past, full of screaming riders.

"Well, shit, if you got it, you gotta flaunt it, you know?" She smirked at him, apparently quite easy with herself, as she finished the hotdog. "Man, stolen food is the best! You should seriously try it sometime, it totally beats normal food, you know?"

When the person from whom she'd stolen the hotdog gave her a dirty look, she gave them one right back, and a rude gesture, for good measure. With that done, she linked her arm though Snape's and brought him with her to the entrance to the roller coaster. His expression amused her, and she laughed at him.

"Shit, Skeletor, you've never been on a damn roller coaster? We gotta change this. You are in serious need of some fun."

"In need of fun, am I? I hardly believe that's the case. However, I didn't come here for nothing. Where do we go to mount this infernal contraption?"

Now that the hot dog was gone, he felt less uncomfortable. To be sure, in any altercation that might arise from the incident, Faith was on her own, but with the way she was hanging onto his arm, there was a good chance that he could be assumed guilty by association.

Looking about, he noticed the platform where riders got on and off the train, and headed in that direction. He was reassured by the presence of his wand in his pocket, as well as his years of experience with quick and silent casting. He did not trust this 'roller coaster' and he could imagine innumerable gruesome ways it might cause his death.

Shaking her head in mock disbelief, though, of course, she had been around him too much to really feel such a thing, she followed him up to the line up for the roller coaster. "Yeah, like, you got to find the fun even more than G man, you know?" And that was saying something. Giles was cute, but way too stuffy. Except as Ripper.

"Could you make it sound more lame?" She rolled her eyes at him, but flashed him a brilliant grin and got into the very front car of the roller coaster. She settled down quickly, and then waited for him to come and sit in the place beside her.

Ignoring the restraint, for now, she lounged against the back of the seat, her legs propped up on the front of the car as if she didn't have a care in the world. "So, what do you do for fun, if not roller coasters?" She was a bit curious, really. She barely knew him, and he actually seemed to know her pretty well.

Snape fit himself into the seat of the roller coaster car, gathering his cloak and robes about him. Concerned first for his own safety, he examined the restraining mechanism intently, wanting there to be no error in its use. Only after he had been assured through observation that the coaster attendants would see to his safety did he turn and answer Faith's question.

"For 'fun'? I'm not certain I would use that word, implying, as it does, an air of useless frivolity, but I suppose I find my fun in soaking up arcane lore from ancient tomes, brewing novel or forgotten magical potions, and gathering rare ingredients in lonely and life-threatening adventures. It was formerly my hobby to devise the cruelest and most mind-rendingly horrific of curses, but I gave that up some time ago."

He watched her expression, not really expecting her to be fazed by his statements. It was, for Snape, a rather frank admission, which spoke, he supposed, to his desire to be known by this girl. Why that should be, he did not know, unless it was because he sensed that she, among all the others in this place, would not think his hobbies so far beyond the bounds of normalcy.

Once Snape was in, Faith lowered her feet and set them on the floor. Reckless she might be, but that didn't extend to riding a roller coaster without a restraint. So she sat back, more or less properly, for once. Not lounging, just sitting. It was rare, and a concession to the ride, nothing more.

"Yeah?" She turned to look at him, surprise shining for a moment in her dark eyes. The goblin ride attendants came by and checked that they were properly belted in, and she didn't stop looking at him the whole time. "Life-threatening, huh? Well, shit, I know something about that." She bit her lower lip, realized what she was doing, and stopped herself. "Curses... yeah. Just... you know. I know about that, too."

Instantly, as happened whenever she let something like that slip, her defenses were up. "Not that I wanna hug and share and grow or anything. Just saying. You don't got the monopoly on curses, you know." Maybe it had been a reaction to his honesty, what had come out of her lips. But she felt strange about it, and it was a relief when the roller coaster started.

Snape observed the slightly-increased care with which Faith secured herself in the coaster car, and wasn't sure whether to feel impressed that she had done something with a bit of propriety for once or frightened that this ride should intimidate her into sober submission to its safety requirements. In truth he felt a bit of both and was quickly distracted by her not-quite-revealing comments. He already knew she lived a life of danger, but what was her connection with curses? Was it worth it to push her on it? It would hardly be polite...

"I'm sorry. Are you saying you are also familiar with devising and casting curses, or that you have yourself been cursed or are, in fact, cursed at this moment. Because I am much practiced in the removal of magical impediments, and if you are cursed, I could help you become free."

The wizard found himself forgetting about his potions as he dangled the invitation to a subsequent meeting with this exasperatingly intriguing young woman in front of her. He had to admit, as the train began its long, slow climb to the top of the highest hill, that removing a curse from her sounded more fun than this roller coaster business.

Faith glanced over at Snape as the roller coaster moved slowly to the top of the largest hill. "Shit, man, what the fuck did I just say? I don't wanna talk about it." There was a moment of silence as the car hung on the very top of the structure, about to plummet over, but not quite gone over the edge yet.

In that instant, Faith, despite her earlier words, began to talk. "No, I can't do your mojo thing, but I'm cursed. Shit, there's nothing you can do about it, except kill me." She spoke softly, looking away, refusing to meet his eyes. "Sometimes I wish someone..."

But then, whatever she was going to say was cut off by a delighted shriek as the cart went over the edge, and hurtling down the steep hill. Being who she was, she flung her hands high into the air, let gravity jerk her around as much as it wanted to. Never once, in the course of the entire ride, did she let her hands grab onto anything, and as always on a rollercoaster, she felt delightfully out of control, like she was going to fly from the seat any second.

Snape was not surprised at first by Faith's repeated insistence that he not probe her secrets. He had expected just such a reaction after she had made her boundaries clear the first time. Nevertheless, this new Faith had never liked him much, so he felt there wasn't much for him to lose by persisting.

He was surprised, however, by the subsequent confession she offered. His rapt attention was shockingly broken as the train began its frighteningly rapid descent. What had she been about to say? That she wanted someone to kill her? But surely there was a real possibility he could help her. That was as far as he got, however, before the chaos and terror of the coaster ride destroyed his ability to form coherent thoughts.

Never had he endured so disturbing a journey. To be flung about by the mechanical contraption with no way to predict where he would end up or which way he would be jerked next. It was worse than the carts in the vaults at Gringotts. He would take floo powder and portkeys over this mode of transport any day. Why on Earth would anyone do this for fun. Muggles truly must be mad.

The momentary weakness was over, so far as she was concerned. She was relieved, really, that she'd been interupted before she'd gone any further with it. As far as she was concerned, this was over. So she just threw herself into the ride, and by the end, she felt much better about everything.

At the end of the ride, she turned to Snape and arched an eyebrow at him. "Fun, right, Skeletor?" The previous conversation was completely pushed aside, as Faith had less than no interest in continuing with what had been nothing more than a momentary weakness.

"I wanna go again." Her dark eyes were sparkling, her skin was slightly flushed, and she was almost bouncing in her seat. "Can we?" The look she gave him was really almost imploring.

Snape slowly released the white-knuckled grip he had on the coaster car's rim, and turned to face the bouncing young woman next to him. Fighting to keep his deep reluctance to ever undergo that experience again from his face (and succeeding fairly well, from years of practice), Snape struggled to find the best answer to Faith's question. As much as he did not want to ride the coaster once more, he had to admit, at least to himself, that he found Faith's eagerness almost irresistable. More than that, he found the way it tickled his memories somewhat arousing, but he wasn't sure if he was ready to admit that to himself.

"Yes. We can."

Snape took a deep breath and sat back in the seat. One more time, and that was it. At least this time he would know what to expect.

The pretty brunette looked at him in disbelief. She had fully expected him to say no to that, once it became obvious he was seriously freaked out. But he was willing to go again. In a rare moment of compassion, she shook her head and shrugged. "Nah, it's cool. It's totally boring the second time, anyhow."

She crawled out of the car, and then turned to Snape. Now was the time when it could get awkward, considering what she'd said. She bit her lower lip and looked at him seeming almost vulnerable.

"Hey, look, about that stuff I said, I was just fucking around, alright?" She punched him lightly, well, lightly for her, anyway, on the shoulder. "You're alright, Skeletor. I gotta jet, later."
