Day 7
Who: Cathal and OTA
What: Exploring the New Attractions
When: Late Morning
Where: Concessions/General Amusement Park Area
Rating: TBA
Status: Complete

Not only was it really strange to have been in this weird new land for a week, but when he woke up that morning and looked out his window, he saw something even stranger. There were machines of all kinds set up around the city. They rose high into the sky and circled, dipped and weaved in between other machines and attractions. He was pretty sure he didn't want to go find out what they were or why they had suddenly been put there, but he also knew that as a warrior he couldn't rightly allow himself to become lax in his knowledge of the place.

He finally mustered up the strength to face whatever was out there about mid morning. That and his stomach had started to protest its neglect. He pulled on his cloak and boots then left his room. He avoided looking at anyone. He didn't want to start a meaningless conversation or worse yet, get to know someone. He stopped outside the dorm and looked up. The machines were enormous. He'd never seen anything like them and while that didn't totally unnerve him, it did mean he'd have to ask someone what they were. Maybe one of those goblins.

But first, his stomach. It needed appeasing. He walked by a few of the concession stands, noting strange foods on display. Or, what he supposed was food. It smelled like food. Just not like any food he'd ever had before. Finally, he stepped up to one and looked the offerings over. He scanned the list of available foods behind the faceless vendor and looked down, trying to figure out which was which. Nachos, cotton candy, funnel cakes, corn dogs, fried twinkies, caramel apples, chili fries, and all manner of other things. He recognized the fries for what they were; fried potatoes. The other things didn't looks all that appetizing.

He was still trying to decide what to order when he heard someone's feet shuffling behind him.

When Tonks woke and looked out the window, only to see the tents gone, she wasn't really surprised. After all, Mirage had been just like that, every couple of days, usually no more than a week, the surroundings had changed. So, while she rolled her eyes, it wasn't really that big a deal to her. She glanced over at Marcus, who was deep in Ranger meditations, and decided it was pointless to bother him just yet.

So, she headed to the shower, hoping that he'd be done by the time she was done. She was hungry, and also wanted to explore this new place, but wanted to do it with her lover. So she had a shower, not worried about how long it took. She knew that Marcus could take a very long time in his training, so she wouldn't be keeping him.

He was just rising out of his trance when she came back and started dressing, so she waved and grinned at him. "Hullo, love! Wanna come out for a bite? I'm starving."

She looked at him thoughtfully, remembering the story he'd told her about the vampire, and just basically checking him over to see if he was alright. As far as she could tell, he looked okay, or else she would have been shoving a blood-regenerating potion down his throat so fast. He did seem fine, though, which didn't stop her from worrying.

"Well, anyway, I'm going to go. You coming with me?"

Marcus rose out of his trance and opened his eyes just in time for a wonderful sight. Tonks, her hair still somewhat wet--doubtless from a shower--stood half-undressed before him, putting on her clothes for the day. Getting to his feet, the Ranger, who was already dressed, assessed his hunger and found that he was hungry, too. He did usually wait until after his morning meditation to have breakfast, so Tonks' suggestion was right on time.

"I would love to, love. You seem particularly eager today. Is there a special reason, or did you just get enough sleep?"

As they headed out the door, the answer to his own question became obvious to Marcus. None of the old European Renaissance trappings were left. Instead, everywhere he looked gigantic machines covered in coloured lights (incandescent bulbs, must be 20th century) whirled and clanked. The air smelled different, too. Less straw and wood, more grease, asphalt and ... hamburger? Marcus had never had fresh beef before being taken to Mirage, and even though he had had his share of it there, he still never expected to encounter it.

As he and Tonks wandered through the newly-reclad streets, they past many food stalls, but none serving hamburger. Finally, the hunger was too much, and they turned into the next stall serving something edible. There was already someone there, so they shuffled up behind him, waiting their turn, examining the offerings.

Cathal turned at the sound of two pairs of footsteps. He hadn't met very many people, but all of them had been women. If he hadn't been forced to go to the ball, he would have sworn that that's the only gender that occupied this place. Save himself, of course. He was beginning to wonder if it was some sort of cruel joke on Jareth's part. Keep him meeting women except the one he really wanted. He was pleasantly surprised, then, to find that a man was one of the two behind him. It didn't gain a smile from him, but he was pleased nevertheless.

He took a step back from the stand and motioned to it with a sweep of his arm. "I haven't quite figured out what all this is, so you go ahead and order if you like." He was a bit interested to see what these people would order first, then maybe he'd feel a little more comfortable with his choice. As it was he was leaning toward the fries.

He had just stepped back when he realized that the woman's hair was a very bright shade of pink. No one he had previously encountered hair hair that color and it startled him. He couldn't help but stare at it and note that she seemed perfectly at ease with it. There was also no cause for alarm from the man. He looked around to see if anyone else had a strange reaction to it, but anyone who passed them paid her no mind. Then he began to wonder if it was just him. Was he seeing things?

He finally got a grip on himself and closed the mouth that had dropped open without his notice. He turned back to the stand and watched to see what items they would get.

While Tonks was familiar with the idea of a muggle amusement park, it wasn't something she'd exactly had a lot of experience with. It seemed like it was just a diversion to help people who couldn't use magic have some excitement. But, despite that, she was powerfully curious. And as she and Marcus walked together, she linked hands with him, and pointed things out with her other hand.

"Oh, look! How do you suppose they make that go up like that without magic? Or look at that one, spinning around so fast..." And so on and so forth. And, of course, she tended to trip every few seconds or so, but that was pretty much par for the course for her. She didn't pay it any attention.

In the end, though, hunger pulled her from the fascinating rides, which she was desperate to get on, but thought she shouldn't because she was pregnant, and she saw a sign advising against it. But Merlin, those things looked fun... but her stomach was completely empty and complaining about that fact, so she reluctantly followed her lover into the tent.

She grinned cheekily at the handsome man who turned around to face them, knowing very well that his reaction was to her hair. She was used to it. "It's natural, sort of." She informed him, and then turned to the menu. "Hmmm... I've heard of some of this stuff. I think I want chips and gravy, and a caramel apple." Pregnancy cravings? What pregnancy cravings? "And a hot dog, with everything."

With the important business of food attended to, she could turn her attention to the man who had been staring at her. She grinned at him once more. "Wotcher, I'm Tonks! Have you been to one of these muggle park things before? I think they're bloody brilliant."

Marcus was getting more pleasure than he probably ought to out of listening to Tonks marvel at the mechanics of the amusement park rides. For him, trained as he was in 23rd century maths and physics, the scientific principles at work in the machines that surrounded them were simple to understand, though their mechanized execution was awesome to behold. He had become so accustomed to being surprised by the amazing and irrational things that Tonks could do with magic that it was nearly thrilling to have the shoe on the other foot and be able to wax mysterious about the forces at play all around them.

Once they arrived at the food vendor, however, his hunger took priority and he examined the menu. Most of the items on it were pure junk, from a nutritional standpoint, and he couldn't imagine why anyone would willingly ingest them, but, of course, they did, even in his time period. Nevertheless, there had to be something here with redeeming nutritive qualities.

In the end, the Ranger orderd a caramel apple and a bowl of chili. That way he was at least having protein and a piece of fruit. Waiting for his food, he turned to listen to the conversation Tonks had struck up with the other fellow waiting there. He looked like he might have been more comfortable in the European Renaissance theme than this noisy twentieth-century one. Marcus didn't say anything but watched the two fish-out-of-water discuss their surroundings.

Cathal's hood was currently hanging down his back, so the tattoos on his face were clearly visible. They were inked into the skin of his face along with that of his scalp and neck. Anyone who looked at him head on or from the side could see that the tattoos were meant to imply the face of a fox. He knew that he was strange looking to some people. At Sevenwaters where everyone had been familiar with Johnny's band of warriors and on their island Inis Eala, no one even looked twice at him. But he had gained more than one or two strange glances since arriving here.

Still, his appearance seemed like nothing in comparison to the brightly colored hair of the witch who was currently ordering her food. The closest color he had to compare it to was Clodagh's hair, a rich coppery red. But it was nothing like this. Truth be told, Cathal had been more comfortable in the Renaissance theme than this new brightly colored machine oriented one. It put him out of his comfort zone and he got a little moody when that happened.

He finally remembered that she'd introduced herself. At least, he thought she had. He'd never heard the name Tonks before and found that it was just one more strange thing about the woman. "I'm Cathal." He didn't try to shake hands and she hadn't offered. He had no idea what a "muggle park thing" was, but as she gestured to the area surrounding them he assumed that she was talking about the current state of the city. "No, they don't have these where I'm from."

Both of them had ordered and the common item seemed to be a caramel apple. He figured if the both of them were going to be alright eating them he probably would, too. "I'll have the coated apple and one of those cakes." He pointed to the funnel cake with the strawberry and whipping cream topping. Although Marcus' appearance was much less interesting than the woman's, Cathal felt immediately more at ease in his presence. He didn't seem quite as foreign, even though his clothing too was unfamiliar.

When their food items were ready, they were stacked on the counter by the faceless workers. Cathal retrieved his apple and funnel cake and looked around for a place to sit and eat.

The bright-haired witch knew that her family, on the Black side, at least, would be completely and totally horrified by the way this man's face was covered in tatoos. She, however, was fascinated, and the way she looked at him was just this side of what could be considered a rudely direct appraisal. Idly, she imagined some of the same marks on her own skin, and her skin, of course, responded.

For a moment, she had the same markings on her skin that he had on his. Oh, it wasn't exact. Tonks would have to spend hours just staring at Cathal to get all the details down. But it was as close as she could get with as little study as she'd had, and she grinned to herself before letting them fade back away. Really, very fascinating. Though she did wonder how he dealt with having these markings be permanent. Of course, she wondered that about other people's hair, too.

"Wotcher, Cathal?" Her greeting was just as cheerful as ever, as if she hadn't just done her best to replicate his tatoos on her own skin, like she didn't notice him staring at her hair. Of course she did, but most people stared at her hair. She prefered it that way, or she would have gone with a nice normal blonde or brunette. No one changed their hair to be bright pink without wanting attention.

Once the food was set down, Tonks collected hers and then glanced around. "There's a place over there!" She assumed Cathal was going to join them. After all, they were talking. That made them at least friendly, as far as Tonks was concerned. And she knew Marcus to be a social type of person, as well, so she doubted he would mind.
