Day Five: Your coffee, sir
Who: Ianto and Jack
When: Day Five, early morning
What: Ianto brings coffee. Because that is what he does.
Where: Jack's room
Rating: PG so far...
Status: Complete

Ianto had thought he'd seen Jack at the ball, through the swirl crowds of laughing or angry or imperturbable costumed revellers. But he couldn't find him in the end, and he'd refrained from knocking on Jack's door. It was too late at night, and he didn't want to give the wrong impression.

Pfft. Impression. Ianto didn't have a clue what kind of impression he wanted to give. On the one hand, he wanted to grab Jack by his greatcoat lapels and snog him senseless. On the other.... well, dammit, he wanted to be courted. Or at least bought dinner. While he didn't disbelieve Jack's story that they came from different points in their timeline, he also didn't want to skip all the stuff that he had clearly missed, even if Jack had indeed lived through it. Ianto wanted more than that.

Some habits were hard to break, though, and so at 8 a.m. sharp he rapped upon Jack's dormitory door, steaming mug of coffee in hand to present to his captain.

Ianto couldn't help but small laugh that escaped him. "Does he also enjoy pina coladas and getting caught in the rain?" He made a couple of notes, and then snerked under his breath. "Parents today, naming their children Skyler and Madison and Calvyn with a y. What kind of a name is Jareth? Not bloody Welsh, is it?"

He followed Jack's finger and peered out the window. "And what do you know about the Labyrinth? What did you mean by 'running' it, and why does doing so grant us our freedom?" There was a reason that Ianto was the resident archivist.

At that, Jack looked positively lost. "How would I know if he likes pina coladas?" Jack asked, frowning slightly. It wasn't his fault that his knowledge of music past about 1950 was surprisingly sparse. "Though, wouldn't mind seeing him after getting caught in the rain for the record." Jack paused for a moment, letting his mind wander quite far from the task at hand. Right then. The Labyrinth.

Jack harrumphed. Loudly. "What do you think I mean?" Jack asked, rolling his eyes. "You run it. Try to figure it out and hope to god there isn't a Minotaur waiting for us at the end of it."

Ianto smiled affectionately at Jack at that. He could be irritatingly cute, even when he wasn't intending to be. "Remind me to instigate Karaoke Night in Bedlam another time," he said.

The harrumph was another of Ianto's favourite things about Jack. And the bravado. He made a tick in his journal and then placed it on the desk. Stepping closer to Jack, he looked him directly in the eye. "Could be worse," He said, deadpan serious. "Could be a Weevil in the centre instead. Or Rhys."

All Jack could do was grin. "With your voice?" Jack licked his lips, already imagining it. "You will be singing 'Ghost Riders in the Sky'. It will show off those Welsh vowels of yours to absolute perfection."

At least the journal had been set aside. Jack breathed a sigh of relief, even if this was most likely only a momentary distraction. "A Minotaur could be as hungry as Rhys, or so Andy says," Jack said, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "Just so long as there isn't a Dalek in the centre? I'll be a happy man." Jack's gaze turned towards the window. "The Doctor says he wants to try it at some point, perhaps soon. If he goes... Rose'll go." The question hung silent in the air as Jack turned back to look at Ianto. Would you come if I went? Jack: between a rock and a hard place.

Ianto stared at Jack. He did not know where the man's insanity sprung from sometimes. "If that's the case, we'll get you some insipid boy band song for you to sing." He arched a brow and ran his fingers along Jack's temple. "You certainly have the hair for it."

He let his hand drop but stood close as Jack spoke. "Who is Rose?" he asked, cocking his head to the side. There was an unspoken question on his lips too: Would you choose to run off with the Doctor and abandon me again, or would you finally choose me?

Jack was perfectly sane, thank you very much. If one could be considered sane when throwing himself in front of danger at every turn and living for well over two thousand years that is. "Boy band?" Jack asked, lifting an eyebrow. "Beatles wouldn't be too bad," he reasoned. "Though I refuse to sing anything by the Monkeys." Jack, of course, had no way of knowing the true meaning of the 'boy band' phrase. One of these days he'd familiarise himself with pop culture. Eventually. Still, if it meant that Ianto would run his hands through his hair? Jack wasn't going to complain.

"Why, jealous?" Jack asked, curiosity getting the better of him. "She's one of the Doctor's companions. Actually..." Well, no harm in letting this piece of information out, was there? "She's the one who made me like this." Jack heard the question, he, however, chose to ignore its existence.

See, it was moments like this that made Ianto want to shag Jack. Hard. "Yes, the Monkees are just about as hip as the Partridge Family these days," he opined. "Though you strike me as a lost Osmond brother more than anything. Do you think we can get you to sing Puppy Love?"

His eyes narrowed. "No," he said coldly, "I'm not jealous. I'm conditioned, at this point, to be as far from jealous as possible. We all know that we're nothing to you the moment your precious Doctor arrives, don't we? I don't exactly see you throwing everything aside for Gwen or me." But his ire hit a brick wall. "What do you mean she made you like this? She's the one who took away your ability to die? Or rather, to stay dead, you stubborn git?"

And it was Jack who was wondering why Ianto was refusing that desire to shag. Jack blinked once, then twice at Ianto. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were speaking in tongues and an exorcism should be ordered," Jack replied, shaking his head. "Lost Osmond brother?" He asked with a raised eyebrow. "And why on earth would anyone want to sing about Puppy Love? The real thing is that much better."

Jack's own anger was beginning to get the best of him. "I came back for you," Jack replied, crossing his arms in front of his chest, eyes narrowed ever so slightly. "Because the Doctor did ask me to stay, and I turned him down because I wanted to come back to you. How many damn times do I have to tell you? Yes, I'll always run to the Doctor's aid, but I still, at the end of the day, come back to you lot." Jack gritted his jaw, hands clenching into fists, though hidden by his arms. "Stubborn because I won't stay dead? Do you really wish that I were dead, Ianto?" Jack asked, hands falling to his sides as he stepped towards Ianto. He reached up, cupping Ianto's chin in between his thumb and forefinger and looked down at him, as if daring Ianto to say 'yes'.

"You have to remember," Ianto said, proud that his deep voice was staying even even as Jack cupped his face, dare Ianto say it, lovingly. "You have to remember that... if what you say about our differing timelines is true-- Jack, you only just returned. I've barely seen you once in a year. You didn't so much as leave a note, for God's sake."

All right, so his arms were snaking around Jack's perfectly trim waist. What of it? Just because he was stepping closer to Jack did not mean all-- or anything-- was forgiven.

A simple fact that was frustrating Jack to no end. Why on earth were they from two different time periods, out side of some cruel joke? "I couldn't. There wasn't time, Ianto," Jack said, shaking his head ever so slightly. He didn't move his hand away, not when Ianto was stepping in closer and it took all of Jack's self-control to keep from smiling when those arms slid around his waist.

"I had been waiting over a hundred years for him to show up. And, knowing the Doctor as I do, they wouldn't have stayed long. The TARDIS refueled on the Rift and I had to. God knew how many more years I'd would have had to wait."
