Day Five: Your coffee, sir
Who: Ianto and Jack
When: Day Five, early morning
What: Ianto brings coffee. Because that is what he does.
Where: Jack's room
Rating: PG so far...
Status: Complete

Ianto had thought he'd seen Jack at the ball, through the swirl crowds of laughing or angry or imperturbable costumed revellers. But he couldn't find him in the end, and he'd refrained from knocking on Jack's door. It was too late at night, and he didn't want to give the wrong impression.

Pfft. Impression. Ianto didn't have a clue what kind of impression he wanted to give. On the one hand, he wanted to grab Jack by his greatcoat lapels and snog him senseless. On the other.... well, dammit, he wanted to be courted. Or at least bought dinner. While he didn't disbelieve Jack's story that they came from different points in their timeline, he also didn't want to skip all the stuff that he had clearly missed, even if Jack had indeed lived through it. Ianto wanted more than that.

Some habits were hard to break, though, and so at 8 a.m. sharp he rapped upon Jack's dormitory door, steaming mug of coffee in hand to present to his captain.

The question took Jack off guard and he froze, mind whirling through events of the past year. The last Time Lord who ended up being not the last one. "No," Jack said simply. "The Doctor is the last Time Lord and if he was, I'd think the Doctor would have said if he was," Jack replied. "I don't know who the bloke is. Other than I think he's picked a few different time periods to make his home."

Stepping aside, Jack silently invited Ianto in. "Only if you're sure I'm not going to take advantage of you." With a wink, Jack headed back into the bedroom, returning with a shirt, buttoning it up half way and slipping the braces up over he shoulders, rejoining Ianto. "All I know is this Jareth bloke fancies himself a king and has brought all of us here but for what purpose? Ya got me." Jack settled himself on the arm of a chair, taking up his cup of coffee once more, voice taking on that typical 'explanation' tone. "Extraction?" Jack gestured out the window. "Is running the Labyrinth. The Doctor's mentioned attempting it. Something tells me that the only way we're getting out of here is if we run it." Not exactly a comforting thought.

Ianto didn't hide his amused expression at Jack's Britishism. It was only to be expected, for the sheer number of decades Jack had spent on this side of the Atlantic. Well, on the side of the Atlantic where they used to be. He had no idea where the Atlantic was in comparison to themselves at just this moment.

"Any idea where we are geographically? This isn't the magical place that everyone seems to think it is. Is it?" He didn't know what he wanted the answer to be. "This place reminds me of those... faerie things, or whatever they actually were. It feels like there's much more beneath the surface than we're seeing just now, and whatever is there is rather a sight darker than we're being led to believe."

He stepped in, following Jack's every gesture with a careful gaze. Snorting at the suggestion of running the Labyrinth, he muttered, "Oh yes, that's brilliant. 'Hello, I'm a king and I will let my kidnap victims go if they wander through a bloody maze. I am benevolent like that.' This isn't bloody Alice in Wonderland or Victorian England. Why aren't you working on getting in contact with Tosh or Gwen?"

There may have been Britishisms, but Jack still didn't know a lick of Welsh after living there for a good century. He did, however, maintain that he would be fluent in Welsh before Ianto introduced him to family -- consequently, Jack figured he was safe for a while.

"None," Jack said. "It's almost as if the place is completely out of time and space. You know as well as I the number of universes that exist in our own plane, not to mention the sheer number of alternate dimensions." For the second time in the space of twenty minutes, Jack froze and didn't bother to hide the uncomfortable expression on his face. "I'll say that when I start seeing rose petals." He did and Jack would attempt to hardwire the TARDIS... or something. "Trust me, I don't like it either, Ianto.

"Because it's not possible. Don't you think I've tried?" He pointed to the kitchen table where his earpiece sat abandoned. "Coms aren't working nor is this," he tapped his wrist strap. "At least, not in the communication capacity." Jack smirked. "Besides. Where's your sense of adventure? Chance to walk through the unknown for a chance at freedom?" So maybe Jack was insane in finding such a thing fun.
